The magnetic stability and mean intensity of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of Leg 73 sediments (Holes 519 to 523) decreases with the age of the sediment. We demonstrate that these variations are linked with physical and chemical changes in the magnetic grains themselves. Alteration of the magnetic component occurs most rapidly shortly after deposition. A significant magnetic alteration over the topmost few meters of the sediments is thought to be the result of oxidation. The modification of the NRM characteristics through the partial dissolution of the carbonate is largely accounted for by the effects of concentraion of the magnetic minerals. We apply the techniques of rock-magnetism and X-ray fluorescence analysis to clarify the physical and chemical mechanisms that affect the magnetic character of the sediment.

The magnetic high field susceptibility chi(hifi) indicates the presence of mafic paramagnetic minerals in the scoriae and points to an absence of clay minerals, and in turn of pedogenic processes, in the peat samples. Due to their volcanic origin, scoriae contain much more ferrimagnetic minerals than peat with is indicated by their enhanced saturation remanence Mrs.

Light-induced radical pairs in deuterated and deuterated plus 15N-substituted Synechococcus lividus cyanobacteria have been studied by transient EPR following pulsed laser excitation. Nuclear quantum beats are observed in the transverse electron magnetization at lower temperatures. Model calculations for the time profiles, evaluated at the high-field emissive maximum of the spectrum, indicate assignment of these coherences to nitrogen nuclei in the primary donor. Thorough investigation of the nuclear modulation patterns can provide detailed information on the electronic structure of the primary donor, providing insight into the mechanism of the primary events of plant photosynthesis.

The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) has been measured with low- and high-field methods, in deformed carbonate rocks along the Morcles nappe shear zone (Helvetic Alps). High-field measurements at room temperature and 77 K enable the separation of the ferrimagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic anisotropy. The ferrimagnetic sub-fabric is generally insignificant in these rocks, contributing less than 10% to the total AMS. AMS results for both the separated diamagnetic and paramagnetic subfabrics are consistent with the regional shear movement in the late-stage formation of the Helvetic nappes, as seen in the Morcles nappe, whose inverted limb indicate shear displacement towards the northwest. The diamagnetic anisotropy correlates well quantitatively with the calculated magnetic anisotropy based on the calcite texture. There is a gradational change in the degree of anisotropy related to the strain gradient along the shear zone. A more complex magnetic fabric, resulting from partial overprinting due to displacement along the Simplon–Rhône fault, is evident at one site near the root zone of the nappe. Partial overprinting of the magnetic fabric appears to have taken place in two locations farther up the shear zone as well. This late phase deformation is associated with recent exhumation of the Mont Blanc and Belledonne external massifs and orogen parallel extension, and is reflected by the AMS. Rocks with bulk susceptibility ∼0 SI, and simple mineral compositions are ideal for low temperature high-field torque, as this method helps to enhance the paramagnetic susceptibility and anisotropy, which may otherwise be masked by the mixed magnetic contributions of the composite magnetic fabric.

A detailed rock magnetic investigation has been carried out on Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) pelagic sediments from the Central Equatorial Pacific. This comprises hysteresis and thermomagnetic measurements, Lowrie-Fuller test and, for the first time, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Nearly stochiometric magnetite in two grain size fractions, single domain (SD) and multi domain (MD), has been deduced to be the carrier of magnetic remanence. Comparatively strong paramagnetic contributions are carried by pyrite, being identified by X-ray analysis. The statistical analysis of paleomagnetic parameters (NRM, MDF, initial susceptibility, Königsberger ratio Q) from a large number (> 1000) of samples, supported by hysteresis measurements, indicates a latitude and sedimentation rate dependent ratio of SD/MD grains. Possible sources for the magnetic constituents are discussed in terms of bacterial, volcanic, meteoritic and authigenic origin.

The De Gerlache Seamounts are two topographic highs in the Bellingshausen Sea, southeastern Pacific. Petrological and geochemical studies together with K-Ar age determinations were carried out on four dredged basalt samples collected during a RV Polarstern expedition (ANT-XII/4) in 1995. Minor and trace element composition suggest alkaline basalt compositions. Compared to alkaline basalts of adjacent West Antarctica (the Jones Mountains) and of Peter I Island, the samples have lower mg-numbers, lower Ni and Cr contents and lower high field-strength elements (HFSE)/Nb and large-ion lithophile elements (LILE)/HFSE ratios. Three of the four samples have low K, Rb, and Cs concentrations relative to alkaline basalts. The K-depletion and other elemental concentrations may be explained by 1.1% melting of amphibole bearing mantle material. Additionally, low Rb and Ba values suggest low concentrations of these elements in the mantle source. K-Ar age determinations yield Miocene ages (20-23 Ma) that are similar in age to other alkaline basalts of West Antarctica (Thurston Island, the Jones Mountains, Antarctic Peninsula) and the suggested timing of onset of Peter I Island volcanism (~10-20 Ma). The occurrence of the DGS and Peter I Island volcanism along an older but reactivated tectonic lineation suggests that the extrusions exploited a zone of pre-existing lithospheric weakness. The alkaline nature and age of the DGS basalts support the assumption of plume activity in the Bellingshausen Sea.

The sedimentary succession drilled at Sites 840 and 841 on the Tonga forearc allows the sedimentary evolution of the active margin to be reconstructed since shortly after the initiation of subduction during the mid Eocene. Sedimentation has been dominated by submarine fan deposits, principally volcaniclastic turbidites and mass-flows derived from the volcanic arc. Volcaniclastic sedimentation occurred against a background of pelagic nannofossil sedimentation. A number of upward-fining cycles are recognized and are correlated to regional tectonic events, such as the rifting of the Lau Basin at 5.6 Ma. Episodes of sedimentation dating from 16.0 and 10.0 Ma also correlate well with major falls in eustatic sea level and may be at least partially caused by the resulting enhanced erosion of the arc edifice. The early stages of rifting of the Lau Basin are marked by the formation of a brief hiatus at Site 840 (Horizon A), probably a result of the uplift of the Tonga Platform. Controversy exists as to the degree and timing of the uplift of Site 840 before Lau Basin rifting, with estimates ranging from 2500 to 300 m. Structural information favors a lower value. Breakup of the Tonga Arc during rifting resulted in deposition of dacite-dominated, volcaniclastic mass flows, probably reflecting a maximum in arc volcanism at this time. A pelagic interval at Site 840 suggests that no volcanic arc was present adjacent to the Tonga Platform from 5.0 to 3.0 Ma. This represents the time between separation of the Lau Ridge from the Tonga Platform and the start of activity on the Tofua Arc at 3.0 Ma. The sedimentary successions at both sites provide a record of the arc volcanism despite the reworked nature of the deposits. Probe analyses of volcanic glass grains from Site 840 indicate a consistent low-K tholeiite chemistry from 7.0 Ma to the present, possibly reflecting sediment sourcing from a single volcanic center over long periods of time. Trace and rare-earth-element (REE) analyses of basaltic glass grains indicate that thinning of the arc lithosphere had begun by 7.0 Ma and was the principle cause of a progressive depletion of the high-field-strength (HFSE), REE, and large-ion-lithophile (LILE) elements within the arc magmas before rifting. Magmatic underplating of the Tofua Arc has reversed this trend since that time. Increasing fluid flux from the subducting slab since basin rifting has caused a progressive enrichment in LILEs. Subduction erosion of the underside of the forearc lithosphere has caused continuous subsidence and tilting toward the trench since 37.0 Ma. Enhanced subsidence occurred during rifting of the South Fiji and Lau basins. Collision of the Louisville Ridge with the trench has caused no change in the nature of the sedimentation, but it may have been responsible for up to 300 m of uplift at Site 840.

We developed an anatomical mapping technique to detect hippocampal and ventricular changes in Alzheimer disease (AD). The resulting maps are sensitive to longitudinal changes in brain structure as the disease progresses. An anatomical surface modeling approach was combined with surface-based statistics to visualize the region and rate of atrophy in serial MRI scans and isolate where these changes link with cognitive decline. Fifty-two high-resolution MRI scans were acquired from 12 AD patients (age: 68.4 +/- 1.9 years) and 14 matched controls (age: 71.4 +/- 0.9 years), each scanned twice (2.1 +/- 0.4 years apart). 3D parametric mesh models of the hippocampus and temporal horns were created in sequential scans and averaged across subjects to identify systematic patterns of atrophy. As an index of radial atrophy, 3D distance fields were generated relating each anatomical surface point to a medial curve threading down the medial axis of each structure. Hippocampal atrophic rates and ventricular expansion were assessed statistically using surface-based permutation testing and were faster in AD than in controls. Using color-coded maps and video sequences, these changes were visualized as they progressed anatomically over time. Additional maps localized regions where atrophic changes linked with cognitive decline. Temporal horn expansion maps were more sensitive to AD progression than maps of hippocampal atrophy, but both maps correlated with clinical deterioration. These quantitative, dynamic visualizations of hippocampal atrophy and ventricular expansion rates in aging and AD may provide a promising measure to track AD progression in drug trials. Magnetic resonance (MR) techniques have become essential in clinical practice and a broad range of research areas. We begin with a review of the potential and limitations for resolution improvements by MR techniques. The kidney has distinct regional structural, functional and biochemical variability. The isolated perfused rat kidney (IPRK) retains renal function while eliminating movement and susceptibility boundaries which severely limit the potential of MR techniques. The IPRK, with a length of less than 20 mm in the longest axis, will be used to illustrate the potential resolution of different MR techniques and the different: biological information that can be obtained. The bimodal NW Etendeka province is located at the continental end of the Tristan plume trace in coastal Namibia. It comprises a high-Ti (Khumib type) and three low-Ti basalt (Tafelberg, Kuidas and Esmeralda types) suites, with, at stratigraphically higher level, interstratified high-Ti latites (three units) and quartz latites (five units), and one low-Ti quartz latite. Khumib basalts are enriched in high field strength elements and light rare earth elements relative to low-Ti types and exhibit trace element affinities with Tristan da Cunha lavas. The unradiogenic Pb-206/Pb-204 ratios of Khumib basalts are distinctive, most plotting to the left of the 132 Ma Geochron, together with elevated Pb-207/Pb-204 ratios, and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions plotting in the lower Nd-143/Nd-144 part of mantle array (EM1-like). The low-Ti basalts have less coherent trace element patterns and variable, radiogenic initial Sr (similar to0.707-0.717) and Pb isotope compositions, implying crustal contamination. Four samples, however, have less radiogenic Pb and Sr that we suggest approximate their uncontaminated source. All basalt types, but particularly the low-Ti types, contain samples with trace element characteristics (e.g. Nb/Nb-*) suggesting metasediment input, considered source-related. Radiogenic isotope compositions of these samples require long-term isolation of the source in the mantle and depletions (relative to unmodified sediment) in certain elements (e.g. Cs, Pb, U), which are possibly subduction-related. A geodynamic model is proposed in which the emerging Tristan plume entrained subducted material in the Transition Zone region, and further entrained asthenosphere during plume head expansion. Mixing calculations suggest that the main features of the Etendeka basalt types can be explained without sub-continental lithospheric mantle input. Crustal contamination is evident in most low-Ti basalts, but is distinct from the incorporation of a metasedimentary source component at mantle depths.

Spoken word production is assumed to involve stages of processing in which activation spreads through layers of units comprising lexical-conceptual knowledge and their corresponding phonological word forms. Using high-field (4T) functional magnetic resonance imagine (fMRI), we assessed whether the relationship between these stages is strictly serial or involves cascaded-interactive processing, and whether central (decision/control) processing mechanisms are involved in lexical selection. Participants performed the competitor priming paradigm in which distractor words, named from a definition and semantically related to a subsequently presented target picture, slow picture-naming latency compared to that with unrelated words. The paradigm intersperses two trials between the definition and the picture to be named, temporally separating activation in the word perception and production networks. Priming semantic competitors of target picture names significantly increased activation in the left posterior temporal cortex, and to a lesser extent the left middle temporal cortex, consistent with the predictions of cascaded-interactive models of lexical access. In addition, extensive activation was detected in the anterior cingulate and pars orbitalis of the inferior frontal gyrus. The findings indicate that lexical selection during competitor priming is biased by top-down mechanisms to reverse associations between primed distractor words and target pictures to select words that meet the current goal of speech.

An investigation has been undertaken into the effects of various radiations on commercially made Al-SiO2-Si Capacitors (MOSCs). Detailed studies of the electrical and physical nature of such devices have been used to characterise both virgin and irradiated devices. In particular, an investigation of the nature and causes of dielectric breakdown in MOSCs has revealed that intrinsic breakdown is a two-stage process dominated by charge injection in a pre-breakdown stage; this is associated with localised high-field injection of carriers from the semiconductor substrate to interfacial and bulk charge traps which, it is proposed, leads to the formation of conducting channels through the dielectric with breakdown occurring as a result of the dissipation of the conduction band energy. A study of radiation-induced dielectric breakdown has revealed the possibility of anomalous hot-electron injection to an excess of bulk oxide traps in the ionization channel produced by very heavily ionizing radiation, which leads to intrinsic breakdown in high-field stressed devices. These findings are interpreted in terms of a modification to the model for radiation-induced dielectric breakdown based upon the primary dependence of breakdown on charge injection rather than high-field mechanisms. The results of a detailed investigation of charge trapping and interface state generation in such MOSCs due to various radiations has revealed evidence of neutron induced interface states, and of the generation of positive oxide charge in devices due to all of the radiations tested. In particular, the greater the linear energy transfer of the radiation, the greater the magnitude of charge trapped in the oxide and the greater the number of interface states generated. These findings are interpreted in terms of Si-H and Si-OH bond-breaking at the Si-SiO2 interface which is enhanced by charge carrier transfer to the interface and by anomalous charge injection to compensate for the excess of charge carriers created by the radiation.

Intraplate volcanism that has created the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain is generally thought to be formed by a deep-seated mantle plume. While the idea of a Hawaiian plume has not met with substantial opposition, whether or not the Hawaiian plume shows any geochemical signal of receiving materials from the Earth’s Outer Core and how the plume may or may not be reacting with the overriding lithosphere remain debatable issues. In an effort to understand how the Hawaiian plume works I report on the first in-situ sulfides and bulk rock Platinum Group Element (PGE) concentrations, together with Os isotope ratios on well-characterized garnet pyroxenite xenoliths from the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The sulfides are Fe-Ni Monosulfide Solid Solution and show fractionated PGE patterns. Based on the major elements, Platinum Group Elements and experimental data I interpret the Hawaiian sulfides as an immiscible melt that separated from a melt similar to the Honolulu Volcanics (HV) alkali lavas at a pressure-temperature condition of 1530 ± 100OC and 3.1±0.6 GPa., i.e. near the base or slightly below the Pacific lithosphere. The 187Os/188Os ratios of the bulk rock vary from subchondritic to suprachondritic (0.123-0.164); and the 187Os/188Os ratio strongly correlates with major element, High Field Strength Element (HFSE), Rare Earth Element (REE) and PGE abundances. These correlations strongly suggest that PGE concentrations and Os isotope ratios reflect primary mantle processes. I interpret these correlations as the result of melt-mantle reaction at the base of the lithosphere: I suggest that the parental melt that crystallized the pyroxenites selectively picked up radiogenic Os from the grain boundary sulfides, while percolating through the Pacific lithosphere. Thus the sampled pyroxenites essentially represent crystallized melts from different stages of this melt-mantle reaction process at the base of the lithosphere. I further show that the relatively low Pt/Re ratios of the Hawaiian sulfides and the bulk rock pyroxenites suggest that, upon ageing, such pyroxenites plus their sulfides cannot generate the coupled 186Os- 187Os isotope enrichments observed in Hawaiian lavas. Therefore, recycling of mantle sulfides of pyroxenitic parentage is unlikely to explain the enriched Pt-Re-Os isotope systematics of plume-derived lavas.
