A novel mode of capillary electrochromatography (CEC), called dynamically modified strong cation-exchange CEC (DMSCX-CEC), is described in this paper. A column packed with a strong cation-exchange (SCX) packing material was dynamically modified with a long-chain quaternary ammonium salt, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which was added to the mobile phase. CTAB ions were adsorbed onto the surface of the SCX packing material, and the resulting hydrophobic layer on this packing was used as the stationary phase. Using the dynamically modified SCX column, neutral solutes were separated with the CEC mode. The highest number of theoretical plates obtained was about 190 000/m, and the relative standard deviations (RSD's) for migration times and capacity factors of alkylbenzenes were less than 1.0% and 2.0% for five consecutive runs, respectively. The effects of CTAB and methanol concentrations and the pH value of the mobile phase on the electroosmotic flow and the separation mechanism were investigated. Excellent simultaneous separation of the basic and neutral solutes in DMSCX-CEC with a high-pH mobile phase was obtained, A mixture containing the acidic, basic, and neutral compounds was well separated in this mode with a low-pH mobile phase; however, peak tailing for basic compounds was observed in this mobile phase.

Monolayers of octadecanethiolate on Au(1 1 1) surface were formed under electrochemical control. The influence of the formation time on the reductive desorption process was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. When the formation time is increased, the reductive desorption peak observed on the voltammograms is significantly shifted in the negative direction, while the cathodic charge is only slightly affected. This behaviour is attributed to a higher degree of organisation of the monolayers for longer formation times, highlighting the role of defect sites in promoting the dissolution. A good agreement was found between our experimental chronoamperograms and theoretical models describing the dissolution process by a shrinkage mechanism. It is demonstrated that a reorganisation process takes place, consisting in the merging of small condensed domains into larger ones. This annealing phenomenon is time and potential dependent, the largest condensed domains being obtained for the longest formation times and least negative potentials. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Some luxury goods manufacturers offer limited editions of their products, whereas some others market multiple product lines. Researchers have found that reference groups shape consumer evaluations of these product categories. Yet little empirical research has examined how reference groups affect the product line decisions of firms. Indeed, in a field setting it is quite a challenge to isolate reference group effects from contextual effects and correlated effects. In this paper, we propose a parsimonious model that allows us to study how reference groups influence firm behavior and that lends itself to experimental analysis. With the aid of the model we investigate the behavior of consumers in a laboratory setting where we can focus on the reference group effects after controlling for the contextual and correlated effects. The experimental results show that in the presence of strong reference group effects, limited editions and multiple products can help improve firms' profits. Furthermore, the trends in the purchase decisions of our participants point to the possibility that they are capable of introspecting close to two steps of thinking at the outset of the game and then learning through reinforcement mechanisms. © 2010 INFORMS.

Esta investigación presenta la puesta en práctica de una propuesta pedagógica para apoyar la enseñanza del Cálculo mediante la resolución de problemas a nivel preuniversitarioen Costa Rica. El proyecto tiene su origen en las dificultades que presentan los estudiantes en la comprensión de conceptos básicos de Cálculo, específicamente el de límite y derivada. Esta experiencia se fundamentó en la elaboración de una “situación problema” que provocó un conflicto intelectual en los estudiantes, mientras que el docente fungió como mediador y aprovechó los descubrimientos hechos por los estudiantes para fundamentar teóricamente los diferentes conceptos luego de la aplicación de la propuesta. Los resultados obtenidos son muy positivos y justifican la necesidad de un cambio en las estrategias metodologías utilizadas para enseñar el Cálculo. Sin embargo, es necesario un acercamiento de los docentes hacia la Teoría de Resolución de problemas para aplicar con éxito este tipo de actividades.

A formal representation is given of the situational structure, and the agents' beliefs about personal identity, in the Smemorato di Collegno amnesia case tried in 1927, in Pollenza, Italy. Another section discusses and formalizes a sample heuristic rule for conjecturing whether an individual identity other than personal, being conveyed by a toponym, was used literally or fictitiously in a given historical corpus of legal casenotes. For example, a landlocked city being named and referred to as though it was a sea port is a fairly good cue for assuming that the toponym is a disguise. Yet, the interpretation is governed by other conventions, when in a play by Shakeaspeare it is stated that a given scene is set on the sea coast of Bohemia. Further discussion of a situational casuistry for identification (especially individual and personal) along with more formal representations will appear in a companion paper "nissanidentifpirandello", also at the disciplinary meet of AI formalisms and legal applications.

Fractal image compression is a relatively recent image compression method. Its extension to a sequence of motion images is important in video compression applications. There are two basic fractal compression methods, namely the cube-based and the frame-based methods, being commonly used in the industry. However there are advantages and disadvantages in both methods. This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm highlighting the advantages of the two methods in order to produce a good compression algorithm for video industry. Experimental results show the hybrid algorithm improves the compression ratio and the quality of decompressed images.

The effect of a high electric current density on the interfacial reactions of micro ball grid array solder joints was studied at room temperature and at 150 °C. Four types of phenomena were reported. Along with electromigration-induced interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) formation, dissolution at the Cu under bump metallization (UBM)/bond pad was also noticed. With a detailed investigation, it was found that the narrow and thin metallization at the component side produced “Joule heating” due to its higher resistance, which in turn was responsible for the rapid dissolution of the Cu UBM/bond pad near to the Cu trace. During an “electromigration test” of a solder joint, the heat generation due to Joule heating and the heat dissipation from the package should be considered carefully. When the heat dissipation fails to compete with the Joule heating, the solder joint melts and molten solder accelerates the interfacial reactions in the solder joint. The presence of a liquid phase was demonstrated from microstructural evidence of solder joints after different current stressing (ranging from 0.3 to 2 A) as well as an in situ observation. Electromigration-induced liquid state diffusion of Cu was found to be responsible for the higher growth rate of the IMC on the anode side.

The effects of a constant uniform magnetic field on dendritic solidification were investigated using a 2-dimensional enthalpy based numerical model. The interaction between thermoelectic currents and the magnetic field generates a Lorentz force that creates a flow. This flow causes a change in the morphology of the dendrite; secondary growth is promoted on one side of the dendrite arm and the tip velocity of the primary arm is increased.

The recognition that urban groundwater is a potentially valuable resource for potable and industrial uses due to growing pressures on perceived less polluted rural groundwater has led to a requirement to assess the groundwater contamination risk in urban areas from industrial contaminants such as chlorinated solvents. The development of a probabilistic risk based management tool that predicts groundwater quality at potential new urban boreholes is beneficial in determining the best sites for future resource development. The Borehole Optimisation System (BOS) is a custom Geographic Information System (GIs) application that has been developed with the objective of identifying the optimum locations for new abstraction boreholes. BOS can be applied to any aquifer subject to variable contamination risk. The system is described in more detail by Tait et al. [Tait, N.G., Davison, J.J., Whittaker, J.J., Lehame, S.A. Lerner, D.N., 2004a. Borehole Optimisation System (BOS) - a GIs based risk analysis tool for optimising the use of urban groundwater. Environmental Modelling and Software 19, 1111-1124]. This paper applies the BOS model to an urban Permo-Triassic Sandstone aquifer in the city centre of Nottingham, UK. The risk of pollution in potential new boreholes from the industrial chlorinated solvent tetrachloroethene (PCE) was assessed for this region. The risk model was validated against contaminant concentrations from 6 actual field boreholes within the study area. In these studies the model generally underestimated contaminant concentrations. A sensitivity analysis showed that the most responsive model parameters were recharge, effective porosity and contaminant degradation rate. Multiple simulations were undertaken across the study area in order to create surface maps indicating areas of low PCE concentrations, thus indicating the best locations to place new boreholes. Results indicate that northeastern, eastern and central regions have the lowest potential PCE concentrations in abstraction groundwater and therefore are the best sites for locating new boreholes. These locations coincide with aquifer areas that are confined by low permeability Mercia Mudstone deposits. Conversely southern and northwestern areas are unconfined and have shallower depth to groundwater. These areas have the highest potential PCE concentrations. These studies demonstrate the applicability of BOS as a tool for informing decision makers on the development of urban groundwater resources. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
