Over the last decades, research on narcissism was dominated with a focus on grandiose narcissism as measured by the NPI (Raskin & Terry, 1988), however, recent discussions emphasize the broad range of manifestations of narcissism, in particular more vulnerable aspects. As a result, new questionnaires were developed to cover the full range of these aspects. One example is the Pathological Narcissism Scale (PNI, Pincus et al. 2009), a 52 item questionnaire with seven subscales covering both grandiose and vulnerable aspects. Validation studies show that narcissism as measured with the PNI differs substantially from narcissism as measured with the NPI. Moreover, a discussion concerning the composition of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism has evolved from these data. In our study we demonstrate how scores on narcissism and narcissism subtypes are associated with a broad variety of personality and clinical measures. In a sample of 1837 participants (1240 female, 597 male; mean age 26.8 years) we investigated the correlation patterns of both PNI and NPI subscales with constructs like FFM, aggression, emotions, clinical symptoms, and well-being. Results show that the assignment of subscales to grandiose and vulnerable subtypes are not unambiguous. We therefore conclude that the decision of how to measure narcissism needs further investigation.

BACKGROUND Children born preterm or with a small size for gestational age are at increased risk for childhood asthma. OBJECTIVE We sought to assess the hypothesis that these associations are explained by reduced airway patency. METHODS We used individual participant data of 24,938 children from 24 birth cohorts to examine and meta-analyze the associations of gestational age, size for gestational age, and infant weight gain with childhood lung function and asthma (age range, 3.9-19.1 years). Second, we explored whether these lung function outcomes mediated the associations of early growth characteristics with childhood asthma. RESULTS Children born with a younger gestational age had a lower FEV1, FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio, and forced expiratory volume after exhaling 75% of vital capacity (FEF75), whereas those born with a smaller size for gestational age at birth had a lower FEV1 but higher FEV1/FVC ratio (P < .05). Greater infant weight gain was associated with higher FEV1 but lower FEV1/FVC ratio and FEF75 in childhood (P < .05). All associations were present across the full range and independent of other early-life growth characteristics. Preterm birth, low birth weight, and greater infant weight gain were associated with an increased risk of childhood asthma (pooled odds ratio, 1.34 [95% CI, 1.15-1.57], 1.32 [95% CI, 1.07-1.62], and 1.27 [95% CI, 1.21-1.34], respectively). Mediation analyses suggested that FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, and FEF75 might explain 7% (95% CI, 2% to 10%) to 45% (95% CI, 15% to 81%) of the associations between early growth characteristics and asthma. CONCLUSIONS Younger gestational age, smaller size for gestational age, and greater infant weight gain were across the full ranges associated with childhood lung function. These associations explain the risk of childhood asthma to a substantial extent.

The Ca2+-binding protein calmodulin (CaM) is a key transducer of Ca2+ oscillations by virtue of its ability to bind Ca 2+ selectively and then interact specifically with a large number of downstream enzymes and proteins. It remains unclear whether Ca2+ -dependent signaling alone can activate the full range of Ca 2+/CaM regulated processes or whether other regulatory schemes in the cell exist that allow specific targeting of CaM to subsets of Ca 2+/CaM binding sites or regions of the cell. Here we investigate the possibility that alterations of the availability of CaM may serve as a potential cellular mechanism for regulating the activation of CaM-dependent targets. By utilizing sensitive optical techniques with high spatial and temporal resolution, we examine the intracellular dynamics of CaM signaling at a resolution previously unattainable. After optimizing and characterizing both the optical methods and fluorescently labeled probes for intracellular measurements, the diffusion of CaM in the cytoplasm of HEK293 cells was analyzed. It was discovered that the diffusion characteristics of CaM are similar to that of a comparably sized inert molecule. Independent manipulation of experimental parameters, including increases in total concentrations of CaM and intracellular Ca2+ levels, did not change the diffusion of CaM in the cytoplasm. However, changes in diffusion were seen when the concentration of Ca2+/CaM-binding targets was increased in conjunction with elevated Ca2+. This indicates that CaM is not normally limiting for the activation of Ca 2+/CaM-dependent enzymes in HEK293 cells but reveals that the ratio of CaM to CaM-dependent targets is a potential mechanism for changing CaM availability. Next we considered whether cellular compartmentalization may act to regulate concentrations of available Ca2+/CaM in hippocampal neurons. We discovered changes in diffusion parameters of CaM under elevated Ca2+ conditions in the soma, neurite and nucleus which suggest that either the composition of cytoplasm is different in these compartments and/or they are composed of unique families of CaM-binding proteins. Finally, we return to the HEK293 cell and for the first time directly show the intracellular binding of CaM and CaMKII, an important target for CaM critical for neuronal function and plasticity. Furthermore, we analyzed the complex binding stoichiometry of this molecular interaction in the basal, activated and autophosphorylated states of CaMKII and determined the impact of this binding on CaM availability in the cell. Overall these results demonstrate that regulation of CaM availability is a viable cellular mechanism for regulating the output of CaM-dependent processes and that this process is tuned to the specific functional needs of a particular cell type and subcellular compartment. ^

The need for timely population data for health planning and Indicators of need has Increased the demand for population estimates. The data required to produce estimates is difficult to obtain and the process is time consuming. Estimation methods that require less effort and fewer data are needed. The structure preserving estimator (SPREE) is a promising technique not previously used to estimate county population characteristics. This study first uses traditional regression estimation techniques to produce estimates of county population totals. Then the structure preserving estimator, using the results produced in the first phase as constraints, is evaluated.^ Regression methods are among the most frequently used demographic methods for estimating populations. These methods use symptomatic indicators to predict population change. This research evaluates three regression methods to determine which will produce the best estimates based on the 1970 to 1980 indicators of population change. Strategies for stratifying data to improve the ability of the methods to predict change were tested. Difference-correlation using PMSA strata produced the equation which fit the data the best. Regression diagnostics were used to evaluate the residuals.^ The second phase of this study is to evaluate use of the structure preserving estimator in making estimates of population characteristics. The SPREE estimation approach uses existing data (the association structure) to establish the relationship between the variable of interest and the associated variable(s) at the county level. Marginals at the state level (the allocation structure) supply the current relationship between the variables. The full allocation structure model uses current estimates of county population totals to limit the magnitude of county estimates. The limited full allocation structure model has no constraints on county size. The 1970 county census age - gender population provides the association structure, the allocation structure is the 1980 state age - gender distribution.^ The full allocation model produces good estimates of the 1980 county age - gender populations. An unanticipated finding of this research is that the limited full allocation model produces estimates of county population totals that are superior to those produced by the regression methods. The full allocation model is used to produce estimates of 1986 county population characteristics. ^

King George Island is located at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, which is influenced by maritime climate conditions. The observed mean annual air temperature at sea level is -2.4°C. Thus, the ice cap is regarded as sensitive to changing climatic conditions. Ground-penetrating radar surveys indicate a partly temperate ice cap with an extended water layer at the firn/ice transition of the up to 700 m high ice cap. Measured firn temperatures are close to 0°C at the higher elevations, and they differ considerably from the measured mean annual air temperature. The aim of this paper is to present ice-flow dynamics by means of observations and simulations of the flow velocities. During several field campaigns from 1997/98 to 2008/09, ice surface velocities were derived with repeated differential GPS measurements. Ice velocities vary from 0.7 m/a at the dome to 112.1 m/a along steep slopes. For the western part of the ice cap a three-dimensional diagnostic full-Stokes model was applied to calculate ice flow. Parameters of the numerical model were identified with respect to measured ice surface velocities. The simulations indicate cold ice at higher elevations, while temperate ice at lower elevations is consistent with the observations.

The Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ca. 55 Ma) is an abrupt, profound perturbation of climate and the carbon cycle associated with a massive injection of isotopically light carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system. As such, it provides an analogue for understanding the interplay between phytoplankton and climate under modern anthropogenic global-warming conditions. However, the accompanying enhanced dissolution poses uncertainty on the reconstruction of the affected ecology and productivity. We present a high-resolution record of bulk isotopes and nannofossil absolute abundance from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1135 on the Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Indian Ocean to quantitatively constrain for the first time the influence of dissolution on paleoecological reconstruction. Our bulk-carbonate isotope record closely resembles that of the classic PETM site at ODP Site 690 on the opposite side of the Antarctic continent, and its correlation with those from ODP Sites 690, 1262 and 1263 records allows recognition of 14 precessional cycles upsection from the onset of the carbon isotopic excursion (CIE). This, together with a full range of common Discoasteraraneus and an abundance crossover between Fasciculithus and Zygrhablithusbijugatus, indicates the presence of the PETM at Site 1135, a poorly known record with calcareous fossils throughout the interval. The strong correlation between the absolute abundances of Chiasmolithus and coccolith assemblages reveals a dominant paleoecological signal in the poorly preserved fossil assemblages, while the influence of dissolution is only strong during the CIE. This suggests that r-selected taxa can preserve faithful ecological information even in the severely-altered assemblages studied here, and therefore provide a strong case for the application of nannofossils to paleoecological studies in better-preserved PETM sections. The inferred nannoplankton productivity drops abruptly at the CIE onset, but rapidly increases after the CIE peak, both of which may be driven by nutrient availability related to ocean stratification and vertical mixing due to changed sea-surface temperatures.

Chinese scientists will start to drill a deep ice core at Kunlun station near Dome A in the near future. Recent work has predicted that Dome A is a location where ice older than 1 million years can be found. We model flow, temperature and the age of the ice by applying a three-dimensional, thermomechanically coupled full-Stokes model to a 70 × 70 km**2 domain around Kunlun station, using isotropic non-linear rheology and different prescribed anisotropic ice fabrics that vary the evolution from isotropic to single maximum at 1/3 or 2/3 depths. The variation in fabric is about as important as the uncertainties in geothermal heat flux in determining the vertical advection which in consequence controls both the basal temperature and the age profile. We find strongly variable basal ages across the domain since the ice varies greatly in thickness, and any basal melting effectively removes very old ice in the deepest parts of the subglacial valleys. Comparison with dated radar isochrones in the upper one third of the ice sheet cannot sufficiently constrain the age of the deeper ice, with uncertainties as large as 500 000 years in the basal age. We also assess basal age and thermal state sensitivities to geothermal heat flux and surface conditions. Despite expectations of modest changes in surface height over a glacial cycle at Dome A, even small variations in the evolution of surface conditions cause large variation in basal conditions, which is consistent with basal accretion features seen in radar surveys.

The Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) is a key player in global-scale oceanic overturning processes and an important conduit for heat, fresh water, and carbon transport. The AAIW past variability is poorly understood mainly due to the lack of sedimentary archives at intermediate water depths. We present records of benthic stable isotopes from sediments retrieved with the seafloor drill rig MARUM-MeBo at 956 m water depth off northern Chile (GeoB15016, 27°29.48'S, 71°07.58'W) that extend back to 970 ka. The sediments at this site are presently deposited at the boundary between AAIW and Pacific Deep Water (PDW). For previous peak interglacials, our results reveal similar benthic d13C values at site GeoB15016 and of a newly generated stack of benthic d13C from various deep Pacific cores representing the "average PDW." This suggests, unlike today, the absence of AAIW at the site and the presence of nearly pure PDW. In contrast, more positive d13C values at site GeoB15016 compared to the stack imply a considerable AAIW contribution during cold phases of interglacials and especially during glacials. Besides, we used three short sediment cores to reconstruct benthic d13C values from the AAIW core during the last glacial and found a d13C signature similar to today's. Assuming that this was the case also for the past 970 kyr, we demonstrate that sea level changes and latitudinal migrations of the AAIW formation site can only account for about 50% of the full range of past d13C increases at site GeoB15016 during cold periods. Other processes that could explain the remaining of the positive d13C anomalies are increases in glacial AAIW production and/or deeper convection of the AAIW with respect to preceding interglacials.

Radioactivity induced by a 15-MeV proton beam extracted into air was studied at the beam transport line of the 18-MeV cyclotron at the Bern University Hospital (Inselspital). The produced radioactivity was calculated and measured by means of proportional counters located at the main exhaust of the laboratory. These devices were designed for precise assessment of air contamination for radiation protection purposes. The main produced isotopes were 11C, 13N and 14O. Both measurements and calculations correspond to two different irradiation conditions. In the former, protons were allowed to travel for their full range in air. In the latter, they were stopped at the distance of 1.5 m by a beam dump. Radioactivity was measured continuously in the exhausted air starting from 2 min after the end of irradiation. For this reason, the short-lived 14O isotope gave a negligible contribution to the measured activity. Good agreement was found between the measurements and the calculations within the estimated uncertainties. Currents in the range of 120–370 nA were extracted in air for 10–30 s producing activities of 9–22 MBq of 11C and 13N. The total activities for 11C and 13N per beam current and irradiation time for the former and the latter irradiation conditions were measured to be (3.60 ± 0.48) × 10−3 MBq (nA s)−1 and (2.89 ± 0.37) × 10−3 MBq (nA s)−1, respectively.

The banking sector underwent drastic reform in post-crisis Indonesia. Bank restructuring, driven by IMF conditionalities, resulted in the exit of insolvent banks and ownership changes of major private banks. Through recapitalization and sales of government-held shares, foreign-owned banks emerged as leading actors in the place of business-group-affiliated banks. As part of the restructuring process, an exit rule was created. The central bank, which up to that time had been given only partial authority under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Finance, now gained a full range of authority over banks. The central bank's supervision system on banks, risk management systems at individual banks, and their efforts to build risk management capacities, began to function. This is totally different from the old financial institution under the Soeharto regime, where banks had no incentive to control risks, as the regime tacitly ensured their survival.

Hansbreen is a tidewater glacier in Svalbard, with grounded tongue, about 16 km in length and ca. 2.5 km in width at its tongue. The calving front position has shown, over the recent decades, a general retreating trend, often rather smooth but with some occasional abrupt changes. We apply a full-Stokes model of glacier dynamics, incorporating a crevasse-depth calving model, with the aim of reproducing the glacier front positions observed since 1936 and analyzing the sensitivity of the model to environmental parameters.
