Afinal, quantos éramos? Um estudo da mortalidade pretérita na freguesia da gloriosa Sant Anna

Search mortality in the glorious St. Anna Parish, hinterland of Rio Grande do Norte in the time frame 1788-1838 is the main objective of this research. Questions that the research aims to answer are: how many were after? Data parish deaths allow us to study mortality in Town? To conduct the research, first appealed to the population maps of the years 1777, 1810, 1811, 1824, 1844, 1853; censuses of 1872 and 1890. As well, the first two books of burials / deaths of the Parish, the first dating from 1788 to 1811 and the second from 1812 to 1838 and a book of baptism 1803-1806. Among the findings it was realized that, for now, the question of knowing, "After all, how many were?" Still cannot be answered, because during the analysis we noticed a high rate of underreporting, demonstrated through a study of the first infant mortality, in which the records we have was very high, which goes against the pre-transitional period, but with the exercise of inverse projection found the opposite, a population that would have a life expectancy higher. Infant deaths occur mainly with the male children in the first months of the year due to infectious causes, and in the early days and weeks, we raised a hypothesis is that these deaths have as a backdrop the poor condition of the mother leading to poor training child, thus leading to his early death

Absence of promoting potential of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in rat urinary bladder carcinogenesis induced by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine and uracil

Conventional studies on bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum; PA) carcinogenicity have used high dietary concentrations (around 30%) and long-term exposure (up to 52-70 weeks) without consideration of the multistep character of the chemical carcinogenesis process. The present study evaluated specifically the promoting potential of 3-5% dietary crude PA in the rat urinary bladder mucosa in a 32-week-long initiation-promotion assay for chemical carcinogenesis. Initiation of urothelial carcinogenesis was accomplished with N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine (BBN). Uracil (U) was provided through the diet in order to expand the population of initiated cells. Seven groups (C) of male Wistar rats were submitted to the following treatments: G1 = BBN (n = 8); G2 = U (n = 10); G3 = BBN-U (n = 9); G4 = BBN-PA-U-PA (n = 16); G5 = PA (n = 8); G6 = BBN-PA (n = 10); G7 = PA-U-PA (n = 12). At the end of the experiment rats presenting epithelial papillary or nodular hyperplasia (PNH), papillomas (PAP), or simultaneous PNH plus PAP numbered, respectively G1: 2-0-1; G2: 0-0-0; G3: 3-0-2; G4: 4-3-2; G5: 1-0-1; G6: 8-0-0; and G7: 0-0-0, with no significant differences in the incidence of lesions among the groups. More frequent and more severe lesions occurred in BBN-initiated animals, predominantly in those also exposed to uracil (G3 and G4). Low-dose crude bracken fern in the diet does not promote rat urinary bladder carcinogenesis after a 32-week period of exposure, even when the initiated urothelial cell population has been expanded through a mechanical stimulus. Seasonal testicular changes in Dendropsophus minutus Peters, 1872 (Anura, Hylidae)

The reproductive cycle in anurans may be either continuous or discontinuous. These differences may be connected to seasonal climate changes and/or to anthropic activity. Forty adult male individuals of the Dendropsophus minutus species were collected during one year, in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimaraes (Mato Grosso, Brazil). The testicles were studied under light and transmission electron microscopy. No variations were observed when the diameter of the seminiferous tubules and the thickness of the interstitial tissue were studied. However, changes in spermatogenesis were conspicuous and indicated that the reproductive cycle of D. minutus in Chapada dos Guimaraes is discontinuous and seems related to variations in air temperature and rainfall.

Influence of light, plant density and disinfection in spore germination of fern blechnum brasiliense desv. blechnaceae

The present assay had as objective evaluating spore germination of Blechnum brasiliense in relation to light, plant density and disinfection. The assay was carried out at Jaboticabal, Sào Paulo State, Brazil, from February, 22 to June, 30, 1996. The experimental design was randomized blocks on a factorial scheme (3x2x2), consisting of 12 treatments, three environments (shade-house, dark-house and germination camera), 2 densities (0.005 grs and 0.010 grs of spores/treatment) and presence or absence of disinfection. The leaf coverage area (130 days) and the number of days necessary to germinate were evaluated. The germination camera data were not analysed because they were insignificant; consequently, the remining data were analysed on a 2×2×2 scheme. The shade-house provided larger green covering area and a faster germination. The density of 0.0 lOg of spore/treatments presented the largest green covering area. The supply of partial light was necessary for good germination. The interaction between the environment and the density had significant effect on the green covering area.

O que revelar? o que esconder? imprensa & maçonaria no findar do dezenove (Pará, 1872-1892)

A atuação maçônica na imprensa paraense do século XIX (1872-1892) é entendida nesta dissertação a partir do contraponto entre o revelar e o esconder. Destacam-se, sobretudo, dois momentos distintos dessa mesma operação. No primeiro, a maçonaria abandona em parte sua postura reservada e decide criar um jornal oficial (O Pelicano) para fazer frente aos ditames ultramontanos (A Boa Nova). E, no segundo, ela retorna a sua condição inicial suspendendo a circulação da publicação, mas sem necessariamente retirar-se do meio jornalístico. De maneira que segredo e publicidade se intercalavam nas “vozes” dos representantes da instituição. A pesquisa permitiu a identificação nominal de um conjunto amplo de maçons e deu conta de demonstrar algumas das tensões e conflitos que ora os aproximava como “irmãos” e ora os colocava definitivamente em lados opostos na imprensa, nas lojas, na vida. Levando em consideração as mudanças de ordem social (Abolição) e política (República) que aconteceram ao longo da temporalidade abordada, este trabalho discute ainda o modo pelo qual os discursos, práticas e representações dos maçons paraenses se articulavam com as transformações que a um só tempo atingiram a província do Pará e a sociedade imperial.
