Pythiosis, caused by Pythium insidiosum, occurs in humans and animals and is acquired from aquatic environments that harbor the emerging pathogen. Diagnosis is difficult because clinical and histopathologic features are not pathognomonic. We report the first human case of pythiosis from Brazil, diagnosed by using culture and rDNA sequencing.

The detection of staphylococcal enterotoxins is decisive for the confirmation of an outbreak and for the determination of the enterotoxigenicity of strains. Since the recognition of their antigenicity, a large number of serological methods for the detection of enterotoxins in food and culture media have been proposed. Since immunological methods require detectable amounts of toxin, molecular biology techniques represent important tools in the microbiology laboratory. In the present study, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify genes responsible for the production of enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) in S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from patients and the results were compared with those obtained by the reverse passive latex agglutination (RPLA) assay. PCR detection of toxin genes revealed a higher percentage of toxigenic S. aureus strains (46.7%) than the RPLA method (38.3%). Analysis of the toxigenic profile of CNS strains showed that 26.7% of the isolates produced some type of toxin, and one or more toxin-specific genes were detected in 40% of the isolates. These results suggests the need for further studies in order to better characterize the pathogenic potential of CNS and indicate that attention should be paid to the toxigenic capacity of this group of microorganisms.

CAE is caused by a lentivirus. The animals are mainly infected when taking contaminated colostrums and/or milk. This study proposed a CAE control strategy without sacrificing contaminated mothers. Thirty-nine female kids, born to CAE seropositive mothers were isolated from their mothers at birth and fed heat-treated colostrums and pasteurized milk from seronegative goats up to two months of age. All kids were submitted to three-monthly serological tests from birth to 12 months; seropositives were segregated from the herd. The control group consisted of 12 kids born to seropositive mothers that remained with their mothers. Diagnosis was the same, but seropositve animals were not segregated. At the end of 12 months, 34 (87%) animals from the experimental group remained seronegative with 76% to 98% confidence limits; in control group animals, the accumulated negativity rate was 17%, with 0% and 38% confidence limits. These results show that the proposed plan is viable to assure disease control in contaminated herds and that without it contamination can pass to animals born to infected goats.

In the present investigation were evaluated the sanitary conditions of poultry and several types of sausages retailed in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil for the determination of the most probable number of coliforms at 45°C/g besides the research of Salmonella using traditional methodology and PCR. In order to do so, 50 samples of poultry and 75 of sausages were collected from nine different establishments in the city, in the period of April to November of 2006. Of the 50 samples of chicken meat, 35 (70%) were out of the microbiologic parameters, according to Brazilian Sanitary Resolution RDC no 12 of Anvisa (>104 coliforms at 45°C/g). In this Resolution, the research of Salmonella is not demanded, but 4 samples (8%) presented the pathogen using the traditional methodology. That presence was confirmed by PCR, which was also positive in another 23, in a total of 27 positive samples (54%). Among 75 samples of sausages, 30 (40%) were out of the allowed limits, with 7 positive samples for Salmonella, using traditional methodology. However, if we consider PCR test, the number of positive samples increases to 42 (56%). Adding this number to coliforms microbiological limits, 86.7% of the analyzed sausages were inappropriate for the consumption.

The contemporaneous culture presents new con ditions of interaction with the information flows in the knowledge construction. Multidimensional codifications stimulate the brain and impress meaning to concepts initially empty. Culture is redefined as mosaic-culture, composed by a diversity of media and by immersion in the messages' sphere. In emerge nt countries like Brazil that propose to capacitate citizens for action and for interaction, the aims should imply the respect to the cultural specificities and in the real improvement of the citizens welfare. Information Science in this context must seek theorizations and practices that contribute to social improvements, capacitating and a better understanding of the challenges of Social Web. If the PISA examination demonstrates the County's frailness relating to the information, the 2011 Unicef report point to opportunities. The Universities have an essential role in the capacitating and in the creation of professional contingents, developing their own potentialities in the study, research and knowledge production for a better use of the Information and Communication Technologies. The man-machinery interfaces offer new problems to be dealt together with the literacy lags in Brazil: if information needs to be communicated to re-elaborate in knowledge, its representational supports need to be learnt as technological processes. Implementing informational ambiences studies will produce material for analyses, for the understanding and for the cultural practices importation, converting them to the contextualization of the Country's needs.

Objective: To evaluate the perception of basic attention healthcare users as to the implantation of the Integral Dental Assistance Protocol (PAIO, in Portuguese) and the effect of this program on the oral health condition, oral hygiene, access to and resolubility of the service, in a public basic health unit of João Pessoa-PB. Method: The sample was composed of 32 volunteers, for whom a sixphase intervention was programed: diagnosis of dental needs; resolution of urgencies; restorative interventions; application of promotional measures; evaluation of the health level obtained; and periodic follow-up visits. Data were collected by means of a semistructured interview and a questionnaire, applied before and after PAIO implantation. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to the content analysis technique. The effect of PAIO implantation was evaluated by using an increasing scoring system ranging from 1 to 10. The Wilcoxon test was applied with a confidence level of 95%. Results: For the participants that attended the PAIO (n=20), the program contributed to improve oral health condition (100%) and knowledge (100%). The users reported satisfaction (n=12) and had a positive evaluation (n=12), achieved by means of the improvement of oral health condition (n=8), faster and easier access to treatment (n=7), scheduling of dental appoints and warrant of being treated (n=6), welcoming (n=5), motivation for oral care (n=5), and perspective of continuity of PAIO (n=6). The initial evaluation of the users received scores between 5.7 and 7.6. After PAIO implantation, the users' perception was improved (p<0.01), with scores between 9.6 and 9.9. Conclusion: According to the users, the implantation of PAIO contributed to the qualification of health service and oral health care, being a favorable aspect to increase the access to and resolubility of the service.

The hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is the largest species of psittacine birds. It is considered endangered and illegal trade is one of the main factors involved in its decline. In this study, 26 hyacinth macaws maintained under poor husbandry conditions and destined for the illegal trade were confiscated in São Paulo State, Brazil. These birds were evaluated for the presence of antibodies against Chlamydophila psittaci by complement fixation test and C. psittaci DNA by seminested polymerase chain reaction. Results showed that 65.4% of the macaws were positive for at least one test. Birds with subclinical infections can shed chlamydiae intermittently over long periods, contributing to the dissemination of the agent. Global trade is one of the most important drivers of disease emergence. The high percentage of positive samples in this study emphasizes the potential risk that the illegal trade of wild birds represents for both human and animal health. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection has been the focus of several studies because this virus exhibits genetic and pathogenic characteristics that are similar to those of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). FIV causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in cats, nevertheless, a large fraction of infected cats remain asymptomatic throughout life despite of persistent chronic infection. This slow disease progression may be due to the presence of factors that are involved in the natural resistance to infection and the immune response that is mounted by the animals, as well as due to the adaptation of the virus to the host. Therefore, the study of virus-host interaction is essential to the understanding of the different patterns of disease course and the virus persistence in the host, and to help with the development of effective vaccines and perhaps the cure of FIV and HIV infections. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a viral disease that affects dogs and many other carnivores. Clinical diagnosis of CDV is difficult due to the broad spectrum of signs that may be confounded with other respiratory and enteric diseases of dogs. Laboratory analysis is required to diagnose suspected cases. In this study, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methodologies were developed for the detection of canine distemper virus simultaneously. The assay exhibited high specificity, as all the negative controls were not mistakenly detected. The CDV concentration was determined from successive injections into the apparatus, with a linear range from 1.1 to 116.0 ng mL-1. The system exhibited good reproducibility with 4.5% variation between runs after regeneration of the coated surface with a solution of 0.1 M glycine-HCL (pH 3.0). The capacitance and resistance values of the modified interface were calculated from EIS data using an equivalent circuit. It was possible to measure CDV in highly concentrated viruses with good specificity and reproducibility. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
