This study investigated the influence of wearing unstable shoe construction (WUS) on compensatory postural adjustments (CPA) associated with external perturbations. Thirty-two subjects stood on a force platform resisting an anterior-posterior horizontal force applied to a pelvic belt via a cable, which was suddenly released. They stood under two conditions: barefoot and WUS. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of gastrocnemius medialis, tibialis anterior, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, rectus abdominis, and erector spinae muscles and the center of pressure (CoP) displacement were acquired to study CPA. The EMG signal was used to assess individual muscle activity and latency, antagonist co-activation and reciprocal activation at joint and muscle group levels. Compared to barefoot, WUS led to: (1) increased gastrocnemius medialis activity, (2) increased total agonist activity, (3) decreased antagonist co-activation at the ankle joint and muscle group levels, (4) increased reciprocal activation at the ankle joint and muscle group levels, and (5) decrease in all muscle latencies. No differences were observed in CoP displacement between conditions. These findings demonstrate that WUS led to a reorganization of the postural control system associated to improved performance of some components of postural control responses.

Purpose: This study investigated the influence of long-term wearing of unstable shoes (WUS) on compensatory postural adjustments (CPA) to an external perturbation. Methods: Participants were divided into two groups: one wore unstable shoes while the other wore conventional shoes for 8 weeks. The ground reaction force signal was used to calculate the anterior– posterior (AP) displacement of the centre of pressure (CoP) and the electromyographic signal of gastrocnemius medialis (GM), tibialis anterior (TA), rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles was used to assess individual muscle activity, antagonist co-activation and reciprocal activation at the joint (TA/GM and RF/(BF + GM) pairs) and muscle group levels (ventral (TA + RF)/dorsal (GM + BF) pair) within time intervals typical for CPA. The electromyographic signal was also used to assess muscle latency. The variables described were evaluated before and after the 8-week period while wearing the unstable shoes and barefoot. Results: Long-term WUS led to: an increase of BF activity in both conditions (barefoot and wearing the unstable shoes); a decrease of GM activity; an increase of antagonist co-activation and a decrease of reciprocal activation level at the TA/GM and ventral/dorsal pairs in the unstable shoe condition. Additionally, WUS led to a decrease in CoP displacement. However, no differences were observed in muscle onset and offset. Conclusion: Results suggest that the prolonged use of unstable shoes leads to increased ankle and muscle groups’ antagonist co-activation levels and higher performance by the postural control system.

Dynamical systems theory is used here as a theoretical language and tool to design a distributed control architecture for a team of two mobile robots that must transport a long object and simultaneously avoid obstacles. In this approach the level of modeling is at the level of behaviors. A “dynamics” of behavior is defined over a state space of behavioral variables (heading direction and path velocity). The environment is also modeled in these terms by representing task constraints as attractors (i.e. asymptotically stable states) or reppelers (i.e. unstable states) of behavioral dynamics. For each robot attractors and repellers are combined into a vector field that governs the behavior. The resulting dynamical systems that generate the behavior of the robots may be nonlinear. By design the systems are tuned so that the behavioral variables are always very close to one attractor. Thus the behavior of each robot is controled by a time series of asymptotically stable states. Computer simulations support the validity of our dynamic model architectures.

Consider a distributed computer system such that every computer node can perform a wireless broadcast and when it does so, all other nodes receive this message. The computer nodes take sensor readings but individual sensor readings are not very important. It is important however to compute the aggregated quantities of these sensor readings. We show that a prioritized medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless broadcast can compute simple aggregated quantities in a single transaction, and more complex quantities with many (but still a small number of) transactions. This leads to significant improvements in the time-complexity and as a consequence also similar reduction in energy “consumption”.

The international Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61499 architecture incorporated several function block with which distributed control application may be developed, and how these are interpreted and executed. However, due the distributed nature of the control applications, many issues also need to be taken into account. Most of these are due to the new error model and failure modes of the distributed hardware on which the distributed application is executed and also due the incomplete standards definition of the execution models. IEC 61499 frameworks does not clarify how to handle with replication of software and hardware components. In this paper we propose a replication model for IEC 61499 applications and which mechanisms and protocols may be used for their support.

Remote engineering (also known as online engineering) may be defined as a combination of control engineering and telematics. In this area, specific activities require computacional skills in order to develop projects where electrical devives are monitored and / or controlled, in an intercative way, through a distributed network (e.g. Intranet or Internet). In our specific case, we will be dealing with an industrial plant. Within the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of activities related to remote engineering, which may be connected to the phenomenon of the large extension experienced by the Internet (e.g. bandwith, number of users, development tools, etc.). This increase opens new and future possibilities to the implementation of advance teleworking (or e-working) positions. In this paper we present the architecture for a remote application, accessible through the Internet, able to monitor and control a roller hearth kiln, used in a ceramics industry for firing materials. The proposed architecture is based on a micro web server, whose main function is to monitor and control the firing process, by reading the data from a series of temperature sensors and by controlling a series of electronic valves and servo motors. This solution is also intended to be a low-cost alternative to other potential solutions. The temperature readings are obtained through K-type thermopairs and the gas flow is controlled through electrovalves. As the firing process should not be stopped before its complete end, the system is equipped with a safety device for that specific purpose. For better understanding the system to be automated and its operation we decided to develop a scale model (100:1) and experiment on it the devised solution, based on a Micro Web Server.

The integration of Plug-in electric vehicles in the transportation sector has a great potential to reduce oil dependency, the GHG emissions and to contribute for the integration of renewable sources into the electricity generation mix. Portugal has a high share of wind energy, and curtailment may occur, especially during the off-peak hours with high levels of hydro generation. In this context, the electric vehicles, seen as a distributed storage system, can help to reduce the potential wind curtailments and, therefore, increase the integration of wind power into the power system. In order to assess the energy and environmental benefits of this integration, a methodology based on a unit commitment and economic dispatch is adapted and implemented. From this methodology, the thermal generation costs, the CO2 emissions and the potential wind generation curtailment are computed. Simulation results show that a 10% penetration of electric vehicles in the Portuguese fleet would increase electrical load by 3% and reduce wind curtailment by only 26%. This results from the fact that the additional generation required to supply the electric vehicles is mostly thermal. The computed CO2 emissions of the EV are 92 g CO2/kWh which become closer to those of some new ICE engines.

In this article we describe several methods for the discretization of the differintegral operator sa, where α = u + jv is a complex value. The concept of the conjugated-order differintegral is also introduced, which enables the use of complex-order differintegrals while still producing real-valued time responses and transfer functions. The performance of the resulting approximations is analysed in both the time and frequency domains. Several results are presented that demonstrate its utility in control system design.

Atualmente, no segmento metro-ferroviário, há uma tendência para que todos os equipamentos que constituem os sistemas auxiliares de uma estação (escadas mecânicas, elevadores, bloqueadores, validadores de bilhética, ventiladores, bombas, entre outros) sejam dotados de inteligência. Tipicamente, um conjunto de equipamentos são ligados a um autómato que permite o controlo local e remoto e é vulgar que, sendo de fabricantes diferentes, suportem tecnologias distintas. Um sistema de supervisão que permita o acesso à informação disponibilizada por cada um dos autómatos, ou à atuação sobre um deles, terá por isso que implementar e suportar diversos protocolos de comunicação de forma a não ficar limitado a um tipo de tecnologia. De forma a diminuir os custos de desenvolvimento e operação de um sistema de supervisão e controlo e facilitar a integração de novos equipamentos, com diferentes características, têm sido procuradas soluções que garantam uma mais fácil comunicação entre os diversos módulos intervenientes. Nesta dissertação são implementadas soluções baseadas em clientes OPC-DA e OPC-AE e no protocolo IEC 60870-5-104, permitindo que os sistemas de supervisão e de controlo comuniquem com os equipamentos através destes três módulos. Os principais aspectos inovadores estão associados à implementação de uma arquitetura multiprotocolo usando as novas tendências de supervisão e controlo baseadas em soluções distribuídas.

The rapidly increasing computing power, available storage and communication capabilities of mobile devices makes it possible to start processing and storing data locally, rather than offloading it to remote servers; allowing scenarios of mobile clouds without infrastructure dependency. We can now aim at connecting neighboring mobile devices, creating a local mobile cloud that provides storage and computing services on local generated data. In this paper, we describe an early overview of a distributed mobile system that allows accessing and processing of data distributed across mobile devices without an external communication infrastructure. Um dos principais objetivos da ciência é perceber a natureza, i.e., descobrir e explicar o funcionamento do mundo que nos rodeia. Para tal, os cientistas precisam de coligir dados e monitorar o meio ambiente. Em particular, considerando que cerca de 70% da Terra é coberta por água, a coleta de parâmetros de caracterização da água de grandes superfícies é uma prioridade. A monitorização das condições da água é feita principalmente através de bóias. No entanto, as bóias disponíveis no mercado não satisfazem as necessidades existentes. Esta é uma das principais razões que levaram o Laboratório de Sistemas Autónomos (LSA) do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto a lançarem um projeto para o desenvolvimento de uma bóia reconfigurável e com dois modos de funcionamento: monitorização ambiental e baliza ativa de regata. O segundo modo é destinado a regatas de veleiros autónomos. O projeto começou há um ano com um projeto do European Project Project [1] (EPS), realizado por quatro estudantes internacionais, destinado à construção da estrutura da bóia e à selecção dos componentes mais adequados para o sistema de medição e controlo. A arquitetura que foi definida para este sistema é do tipo mestre-escravo e é composta por uma unidade de controlo mestre para a telemetria e configuração e uma unidade de controlo escrava para a medição e armazenamento de dados. O desenvolvimento do projeto continuou com dois estudantes belgas que trabalharam na comunicação e no armazenamento de dados. Este projeto, que prossegue com o desenvolvimento da medição e do armazenamento de dados do lado da unidade de controlo escrava, tem os seguintes objetivos: (i ) implementar o protocolo de comunicação na unidade de controlo escrava; (ii ) coligir e armazenar os dados dos sensores no cartão SD em tempo real; (iii ) fornecer dados em tempo útil; e (iv) recuperar dados do cartão SD em tempo diferido. As contribuições anteriores foram estudadas e foi feito um levantamento dos projetos congéneres existentes. O desenvolvimento do projeto atual começou com o protocolo de comunicação. Este protocolo, que foi projetado pelos alunos anteriores, foi um bom ponto de partida. No entanto, o protocolo foi atualizado e melhorado com novas funcionalidades. Esta última componente foi um trabalho conjunto com Laurens Allart, que esteve a trabalhar no subsistema de telemetria e de configuração durante este semestre. O protocolo foi implementado do lado da unidade de controlo escrava através de uma estrutura de múltiplas actividades paralelas (multithreaded). Esta estrutura recebe as mensagens da unidade mestre, executa as ações solicitadas e envia de volta o resultado. A bóia é um dispositivo reconfigurável multimodo que pode ser expandido com novos modos de operação no futuro. Infelizmente, sofre de algumas limitações: suporta uma carga máxima de 40 kg e tem uma área de implantação limitada pela distância máxima à estacão base.
