The species pool concept has played a central role in the development of ecological theory for at least 60 yr. Surprisingly, there is little consensus as to how one should define the species pool, and consequently, no systematic approach exists. Because the definition of the species pool is essential to infer the processes that shape ecological communities, there is a strong incentive to develop an ecologically realistic definition of the species pool based on repeatable and transparent analytical approaches. Recently, several methodological tools have become available to summarize repeated patterns in the geographic distribution of species, phylogenetic clades and taxonomically broad lineages. Here, we present three analytical approaches that can be used to define what we term 'the biogeographic species pool': distance-based clustering analysis, network modularity analysis, and assemblage dispersion fields. The biogeographic species pool defines the pool of potential community members in a broad sense and represents a first step towards a standardized definition of the species pool for the purpose of comparative ecological, evolutionary and biogeographic studies. © 2013 The Authors.

Distance-learning language courses are gaining ground because they meet contemporary social demands and expand opportunities for access to new knowledge. They also favor interaction among people with similar goals but who live in places where no live learning arrangements are available. Taking Valente (2002), Garrison and Anderson (2000), and other authors for theoretical bases, this paper reflects on the criteria and aspects to be considered when one plans and ministers online teacher training courses. The data were taken from a distance-based university extension course offered on the Moodle learning platform by a university in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective was to encourage German language teachers to further develop their own language skills, reflect on aspects of inter-culturality in teaching the target language, and provide experience with current technological resources. This paper describes the elements that proved to be relevant in the creation and planning of the course, based on authors who deal with characteristics of computer-mediated teaching. The importance of this study is related to the fact that little information is available on the planning of courses in online formats.

This work aims at identifying, in literature and in the design of some elementary school teachers I, (s) concept (s) of school failure. This investigation was made from literature review, also had a period of data collection, which occurred through questionnaires sent to teachers in state schools. The first part of this work is aimed to study the literature on school failure. Looking up this part to understand the different concepts that underlie the subject. From this the questionnaires were organized by teachers of a school State elementary school in a city in the state of São Paulo, seeking to uncover the concepts they had on the subject. Subsequently the questionnaires was made comparing the data obtained from the literature. With the results of the questionnaires, we found that many historical perspectives remain in the design of teachers, especially those perspectives that relate to individual causes school failure and family. To counteract the data found with signs placed in the literature it can be stated that the teachers surveyed did not recognize the theory of social and cultural reproduction, as in this research as a source of explanation of school failure. Note that all the teachers who participated in the study said they believe experiences of failure can be overcome

The impact of tannery sludge application on soil microbial community and diversity is poorly understood. We studied the microbial community in an agricultural soil following two applications (2006 and 2007) of tannery sludge with annual application rates of 0.0,2.3 and 22.6 Mg ha(-1). The soil was sampled 12 and 271 days after the second (2007) application. Community structure was assessed via a phospholipid fatty acid analysis, and the physiological profile of the soil microbial community via the Biolog method. Tannery sludge application changed soil chemical properties, increasing the soil pH and electrical conductivity as well as available P and mineral N concentrations. The higher sludge application rate changed the community structure and the physiological profile of the microbial community at both sampling dates. However, there is no clear link between community structure and carbon substrate utilization. According to the Distance Based Linear Models Analysis, the fatty acids 16:0 and 117:0 together contributed 84% to the observed PLFA patterns, whereas the chemical properties available P, mineral N, and Ca, and pH together contributed 54%. At 12 days, tannery sludge application increased the average well color development from 0.46 to 0.87 after 48 h, and reduced the time elapsed before reaching the midpoint carbon substrate utilization (s) from 71 to 44 h, an effect still apparent nine months after application of the higher sludge application rate. This thesis adresses the problem of localization, and analyzes its crucial aspects, within the context of cooperative WSNs. The three main issues discussed in the following are: network synchronization, position estimate and tracking. Time synchronization is a fundamental requirement for every network. In this context, a new approach based on the estimation theory is proposed to evaluate the ultimate performance limit in network time synchronization. In particular the lower bound on the variance of the average synchronization error in a fully connected network is derived by taking into account the statistical characterization of the Message Delivering Time (MDT) . Sensor network localization algorithms estimate the locations of sensors with initially unknown location information by using knowledge of the absolute positions of a few sensors and inter-sensor measurements such as distance and bearing measurements. Concerning this issue, i.e. the position estimate problem, two main contributions are given. The first is a new Semidefinite Programming (SDP) framework to analyze and solve the problem of flip-ambiguity that afflicts range-based network localization algorithms with incomplete ranging information. The occurrence of flip-ambiguous nodes and errors due to flip ambiguity is studied, then with this information a new SDP formulation of the localization problem is built. Finally a flip-ambiguity-robust network localization algorithm is derived and its performance is studied by Monte-Carlo simulations. The second contribution in the field of position estimate is about multihop networks. A multihop network is a network with a low degree of connectivity, in which couples of given any nodes, in order to communicate, they have to rely on one or more intermediate nodes (hops). Two new distance-based source localization algorithms, highly robust to distance overestimates, typically present in multihop networks, are presented and studied. The last point of this thesis discuss a new low-complexity tracking algorithm, inspired by the Fano’s sequential decoding algorithm for the position tracking of a user in a WLAN-based indoor localization system.

There are different ways to do cluster analysis of categorical data in the literature and the choice among them is strongly related to the aim of the researcher, if we do not take into account time and economical constraints. Main approaches for clustering are usually distinguished into model-based and distance-based methods: the former assume that objects belonging to the same class are similar in the sense that their observed values come from the same probability distribution, whose parameters are unknown and need to be estimated; the latter evaluate distances among objects by a defined dissimilarity measure and, basing on it, allocate units to the closest group. In clustering, one may be interested in the classification of similar objects into groups, and one may be interested in finding observations that come from the same true homogeneous distribution. But do both of these aims lead to the same clustering? And how good are clustering methods designed to fulfil one of these aims in terms of the other? In order to answer, two approaches, namely a latent class model (mixture of multinomial distributions) and a partition around medoids one, are evaluated and compared by Adjusted Rand Index, Average Silhouette Width and Pearson-Gamma indexes in a fairly wide simulation study. Simulation outcomes are plotted in bi-dimensional graphs via Multidimensional Scaling; size of points is proportional to the number of points that overlap and different colours are used according to the cluster membership.

Le variabili ambientali e lo sfruttamento della pesca sono dei possibili fattori nel determinare la struttura della comunità demersale. L’area di studio è il Golfo di Antalya, con un area aperta ed una chiusa ad ogni attività di pesca, il periodo di studio ha coperto tre stagioni (primavera, estate, autunno). Lo scopo è quello di delineare un quadro generale sulla distribuzione spaziale e temporale delle risorse alieutiche demersali in quest’area. In questo lavoro di tesi la PCA è stata usata al fine di determinare le variabili ambientali (ossigeno, salinità, temperatura, pH, materia sospesa) che determinano maggiormente la differenza tra le stazioni, tecniche di analisi multivariata hanno invece indagato una possibile variazione su scala spaziale e temporale dei parametri abiotici. La Cluster Analysis effettuata sui dati di abbondanza ha delineato quattro raggruppamenti principali, due ad una profondità minore di 100 m e due ad una profondità maggiore (40% di similarità). Questi risultati sono confermati dall’analisi MDS. L’analisi SIMPER ha messo in evidenza le specie che maggiormente incidono sulla differenza tra strati di profondità. Gli indici di biodiversità sono stati calcolati per indagare la diversità e la variabilità temporale e spaziale della comunità demersale. Due procedure la BIO-ENV e la DistLM (Distance-based linear models) sono state effettuate per individuare le variabili abiotiche che potrebbero essere responsabili dei diversi raggruppamenti nella struttura del popolamento demersale. Le specie commerciali: Mullus barbatus, Upeneus moluccensis, Upeneus pori sono state prese come oggetto per la ricerca di possibili effetti della pesca a livello di popolazione. Per i dati di abbondanza e di biomassa di queste specie è stata eseguita l’analisi multivariata MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance) al fine di trovare eventuali variazioni dovute ai fattori profondità, stagione e transetto. Per ogni specie è stata valutata la sex ratio. Il metodo Bhattacharya ha permesso di determinare le classi di età e la loro abbondanza. In ultimo la relazione peso-lunghezza è stata ricavata separatamente per gli individui maschi e femmine al fine di determinare il tipo di crescita per ogni sesso.

Today, Digital Systems and Services for Technology Supported Learning and Education are recognized as the key drivers to transform the way that individuals, groups and organizations “learn” and the way to “assess learning” in 21st Century. These transformations influence: Objectives - moving from acquiring new “knowledge” to developing new and relevant “competences”; Methods – moving from “classroom” based teaching to “context-aware” personalized learning; and Assessment – moving from “life-long” degrees and certifications to “on-demand” and “in-context” accreditation of qualifications. Within this context, promoting Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning, is currently a key issue in the public discourse and the global dialogue on Education, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Flipped School Classrooms. This volume on Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning contributes to the international dialogue between researchers, technologists, practitioners and policy makers in Technology Supported Education and Learning.
