This paper describes a relatively simple and quick method for implementing aerodynamic heating models into a finite element code for non-linear transient thermal-structural and thermal-structural-vibrational analyses of a Mach 10 generic HyShot scramjet engine. The thermal-structural-vibrational response of the engine was studied for the descent trajectory from 60 to 26 km. Aerodynamic heating fluxes, as a function of spatial position and time for varying trajectory points, were implemented in the transient heat analysis. Additionally, the combined effect of varying dynamic pressure and thermal loads with altitude was considered. This aero-thermal-structural analysis capability was used to assess the temperature distribution, engine geometry distortion and yielding of the structural material due to aerodynamic heating during the descent trajectory, and for optimising the wall thickness, nose radius of leading edge, etc. of the engine intake. A structural vibration analysis was also performed following the aero-thermal-structural analysis to determine the changes in natural frequencies of the structural vibration modes that occur at the various temperatures associated with the descent trajectory. This analysis provides a unique and relatively simple design strategy for predicting and mitigating the thermal-structural-vibrational response of hypersonic engines. (C) 2006 Elsevier SAS. 1 The ability of aminoguanidine (AG), an inhibitor of collagen crosslinking, to prevent changes in cardiac and vascular structure and function has been determined in the deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rat as a model of the cardiovascular remodelling observed in chronic human hypertension. 2 Uninephrectomized rats (UNX) administered DOCA (25 mg every fourth day s.c.) and 1% NaCl in drinking water for 28 days developed cardiovascular remodelling shown as systolic hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, increased thoracic aortic and left ventricular wall thickness, increased left ventricular inflammatory cell infiltration together with increased interstitial collagen and increased passive diastolic stiffness, impaired contractility, prolongation of the action potential duration and vascular dysfunction. 3 Treatment with AG (0.05-0.1% in drinking water; average 182 +/- 17 mg kg(-1) day(-1) in DOCA-salt rats) decreased blood pressure (DOCA-salt 176 +/- 4; + AG 144 +/- 5 mmHg; *P < 0.05 vs DOCA-salt), decreased left ventricular wet weights (DOCA-salt 3.17 +/- 0.07; + AG 2.66 +/- 0.08 mg g(-1) body wt*), reduced diastolic stiffness constant (DOCA-salt 30.1 +/- 1.2; + AG 24.3 +/- 1.2* (dimensionless)), improved cardiac contractility (DOCA-salt 1610 +/- 130; + AG 2370 +/- 100 mmHg s(-1)*) and vascular reactivity (3.4-fold increase in maximal contractile response to noradrenaline, 3.2-fold increase in maximal relaxation response to acetylcholine, twofold increase in maximal relaxation response to sodium nitroprusside) and prolonged the action potential duration at 50% repolarization without altering collagen content or inflammatory cell infiltration. 4 Thus, cardiovascular function in DOCA-salt hypertensive rats can be improved by AG independent of changes in collagen content. This suggests that collagen crosslinking is an important cause of cardiovascular dysfunction during cardiovascular remodelling in hypertension.

We present results of the reconstruction of a saccharose-based activated carbon (CS1000a) using hybrid reverse Monte Carlo (HRMC) simulation, recently proposed by Opletal et al. [1]. Interaction between carbon atoms in the simulation is modeled by an environment dependent interaction potential (EDIP) [2,3]. The reconstructed structure shows predominance of sp(2) over sp bonding, while a significant proportion of sp(3) hybrid bonding is also observed. We also calculated a ring distribution and geometrical pore size distribution of the model developed. The latter is compared with that obtained from argon adsorption at 87 K using our recently proposed characterization procedure [4], the finite wall thickness (FWT) model. Further, we determine self-diffusivities of argon and nitrogen in the constructed carbon as functions of loading. It is found that while there is a maximum in the diffusivity with respect to loading, as previously observed by Pikunic et al. [5], diffusivities in the present work are 10 times larger than those obtained in the prior work, consistent with the larger pore size as well as higher porosity of the activated saccharose carbon studied here.

1 Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension in rats (10% O-2, 4 weeks) is characterized by changes in pulmonary vascular structure and function. The effects of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor perindopril (oral gavage, once daily for the 4 weeks of hypoxia) on these changes were examined. 2 Perindopril (30 mg kg(-1) d(-1)) caused an 18% reduction in pulmonary artery pressure in hypoxic rats. 3 Structural changes (remodelling) in hypoxic rats included increases in (i) critical closing pressure in isolated perfused lungs (remodelling of arteries (50 mu m 0.d.) and (ii) medial wall thickness of intralobar pulmonary arteries, assessed histologically (vessels 30-100 and 101-500 mu m o.d.). Perindopril 10 and 30 mg kg(-1) d(-1) attenuated remodelling in vessels less than or equal to 100 mu m (lungs and histology), 30 mg kg(-1) d(-1) was effective in vessels 101-500 mu m but neither dose prevented hypertrophy of main pulmonary artery. 3 mg kg(-1) d(-1) was without effect. 4 Perindopril (30 mg kg(-1) d(-1)) prevented the exaggerated hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstrictor response seen in perfused lungs from hypoxic rats but did not prevent any of the functional changes (i.e. the increased contractions to 5-HT, U46619 (thromboxane-mimetic) and K+ and diminished contractions to angiotensins I and II) seen in isolated intralobar or main pulmonary arteries. Acetylcholine responses were unaltered in hypoxic rats. 5 We conclude that, in hypoxic rats, altered pulmonary vascular function is largely independent of remodelling. Hence any drug that affects only remodelling is unlikely to restore pulmonary vascular function to normal and, like perindopril, may have only a modest effect on pulmonary artery pressure.

Vascular disease is accelerated in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Since the systemic vasculature plays a pivotal role in myocardial loading, this study aimed to determine the effect of arterial characteristics on left ventricular (LV) morphology and function in patients with T2DM. Conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging were performed in 172 T2DM patients (95 men; aged 55±11y) with preserved ejection fraction (62±5%). Patients were stratified into groups based on LV geometric pattern (normal [n = 79], concentric remodeling [n = 33], concentric hypertrophy [n = 29], eccentric hypertrophy [n = 31]). Total arterial compliance (TAC) was recorded by simultaneous radial tonometry and aortic outflow pulsed wave Doppler. Arterial (brachial and carotid) structure and function were determined by standard ultrasound methods. There were no significant differences between the LV geometric groups in demographic or clinical parameters. The concentric hypertrophy group had significantly increased carotid artery diameter (6.0±0.7mm versus 6.5±0.7mm; p < 0.05) and stiffness (1912±1203 dynes/cm2mm versus 2976±2695 dynes/cm2mm×10−6; p < 0.05) compared to those with normal geometry. However, TAC did not differ between groups. LV diastolic function, as determined by the ratio of diastolic mitral inflow velocity to mitral annulus tissue velocity (E/E_), was significantly associated with carotid artery relative wall thickness and intima media thickness (p < 0.05). Moreover, E/E_ was independently predicted by carotid artery relative wall thickness (β = 22.9; p = 0.007). We conclude that structural characteristics of the carotid artery are associated with abnormal LV structure and function in patients with T2DM. The LV functional irregularities may be a downstream consequence of amplified pressure wave reflections effecting sub-optimal ventricular-vascular interaction.

We develop a method for fabricating very small silica microbubbles having a micrometer-order wall thickness and demonstrate the first optical microbubble resonator. Our method is based on blowing a microbubble using stable radiative CO2 laser heating rather than unstable convective heating in a flame or furnace. Microbubbles are created along a microcapillary and are naturally opened to the input and output microfluidic or gas channels. Measurement of the coating fracture strain of an aluminide coating on a single crystal nickel base superalloy has been performed both in three-point bending and using variable wall thickness testpieces. As-aged specimens, 28 to 33 μm in thickness, were tested at room temperature, 600, 700 and 750 °C; specimens pre-exposed for 140 h at 850 and 1100 °C in air and vacuum were tested at room temperature. Fracture strains varied from 0.52 to 0.70% for as-aged specimens tested at temperatures up to 700 °C and specimens exposed at 850 °C and tested at room temperature. The crack path for these conditions was intergranular or transgranular in the main coating, along carbide-matrix interfaces in the coating transition zone, and at an angle of 30-45° to the original crack path in the substrate. The as-aged coating tested at 750 °C was ductile; a ductile-brittle transition occurs between 700 and 750 °C for the strain rate used (1 × 10-5 s-1). Following 1100 °C pre-exposure, specimens were ductile at room temperature with fractures strains of several percent. In this condition the crack morphology changed to one of subsurface nucleation in β grains and at β-γ′ interfaces. © 1993.

This thesis describes the development of an open-source system for virtual bronchoscopy used in combination with electromagnetic instrument tracking. The end application is virtual navigation of the lung for biopsy of early stage cancer nodules. The open-source platform 3D Slicer was used for creating freely available algorithms for virtual bronchscopy. Firstly, the development of an open-source semi-automatic algorithm for prediction of solitary pulmonary nodule malignancy is presented. This approach may help the physician decide whether to proceed with biopsy of the nodule. The user-selected nodule is segmented in order to extract radiological characteristics (i.e., size, location, edge smoothness, calcification presence, cavity wall thickness) which are combined with patient information to calculate likelihood of malignancy. The overall accuracy of the algorithm is shown to be high compared to independent experts' assessment of malignancy. The algorithm is also compared with two different predictors, and our approach is shown to provide the best overall prediction accuracy. The development of an airway segmentation algorithm which extracts the airway tree from surrounding structures on chest Computed Tomography (CT) images is then described. This represents the first fundamental step toward the creation of a virtual bronchoscopy system. Clinical and ex-vivo images are used to evaluate performance of the algorithm. Different CT scan parameters are investigated and parameters for successful airway segmentation are optimized. Slice thickness is the most affecting parameter, while variation of reconstruction kernel and radiation dose is shown to be less critical. Airway segmentation is used to create a 3D rendered model of the airway tree for virtual navigation. Finally, the first open-source virtual bronchoscopy system was combined with electromagnetic tracking of the bronchoscope for the development of a GPS-like system for navigating within the lungs. Tools for pre-procedural planning and for helping with navigation are provided. Registration between the lungs of the patient and the virtually reconstructed airway tree is achieved using a landmark-based approach. In an attempt to reduce difficulties with registration errors, we also implemented a landmark-free registration method based on a balanced airway survey. In-vitro and in-vivo testing showed good accuracy for this registration approach. The centreline of the 3D airway model is extracted and used to compensate for possible registration errors. Tools are provided to select a target for biopsy on the patient CT image, and pathways from the trachea towards the selected targets are automatically created. The pathways guide the physician during navigation, while distance to target information is updated in real-time and presented to the user. During navigation, video from the bronchoscope is streamed and presented to the physician next to the 3D rendered image. The electromagnetic tracking is implemented with 5 DOF sensing that does not provide roll rotation information. An intensity-based image registration approach is implemented to rotate the virtual image according to the bronchoscope's rotations. The virtual bronchoscopy system is shown to be easy to use and accurate in replicating the clinical setting, as demonstrated in the pre-clinical environment of a breathing lung method. Animal studies were performed to evaluate the overall system performance.

The uptake of anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide is resulting in a lowering of the carbonate saturation state and a drop in ocean pH. Understanding how marine calcifying organisms such as coralline algae may acclimatize to ocean acidification is important to understand their survival over the coming century. We present the first long-term perturbation experiment on the cold-water coralline algae, which are important marine calcifiers in the benthic ecosystems particularly at the higher latitudes. Lithothamnion glaciale, after three months incubation, continued to calcify even in undersaturated conditions with a significant trend towards lower growth rates with increasing pCO2. However, the major changes in the ultra-structure occur by 589 µatm (i.e. in saturated waters). Finite element models of the algae grown at these heightened levels show an increase in the total strain energy of nearly an order of magnitude and an uneven distribution of the stress inside the skeleton when subjected to similar loads as algae grown at ambient levels. This weakening of the structure is likely to reduce the ability of the alga to resist boring by predators and wave energy with severe consequences to the benthic community structure in the immediate future (50 years).

Multi-frequency Eddy Current (EC) inspection with a transmit-receive probe (two horizontally offset coils) is used to monitor the Pressure Tube (PT) to Calandria Tube (CT) gap of CANDU® fuel channels. Accurate gap measurements are crucial to ensure fitness of service; however, variations in probe liftoff, PT electrical resistivity, and PT wall thickness can generate systematic measurement errors. Validated mathematical models of the EC probe are very useful for data interpretation, and may improve the gap measurement under inspection conditions where these parameters vary. As a first step, exact solutions for the electromagnetic response of a transmit-receive coil pair situated above two parallel plates separated by an air gap were developed. This model was validated against experimental data with flat-plate samples. Finite element method models revealed that this geometrical approximation could not accurately match experimental data with real tubes, so analytical solutions for the probe in a double-walled pipe (the CANDU® fuel channel geometry) were generated using the Second-Order Vector Potential (SOVP) formalism. All electromagnetic coupling coefficients arising from the probe, and the layered conductors were determined and substituted into Kirchhoff’s circuit equations for the calculation of the pickup coil signal. The flat-plate model was used as a basis for an Inverse Algorithm (IA) to simultaneously extract the relevant experimental parameters from EC data. The IA was validated over a large range of second layer plate resistivities (1.7 to 174 µΩ∙cm), plate wall thickness (~1 to 4.9 mm), probe liftoff (~2 mm to 8 mm), and plate-to plate gap (~0 mm to 13 mm). The IA achieved a relative error of less than 6% for the extracted FP resistivity and an accuracy of ±0.1 mm for the LO measurement. The IA was able to achieve a plate gap measurement with an accuracy of less than ±0.7 mm error over a ~2.4 mm to 7.5 mm probe liftoff and ±0.3 mm at nominal liftoff (2.42±0.05 mm), providing confidence in the general validity of the algorithm. This demonstrates the potential of using an analytical model to extract variable parameters that may affect the gap measurement accuracy.

Rotational moulding is a method to produce hollow plastic articles. Heating is normally carried out by placing the mould into a hot air oven where the plastic material in the mould is heated. The most common cooling media are water and forced air. Due to the inefficient nature of conventional hot air ovens most of the energy supplied by the oven does not go to heat the plastic and as a consequence the procedure has very long cycle times. Direct oil heating is an effective alternative in order to achieve better energy efficiency and cycle times. This research work has combined this technology with new innovative design of mould, applying the advantages of electroforming and rapid prototyping. Complex cavity geometries are manufactured by electroforming from a rapid prototyping mandrel. The approach involves conformal heating and cooling channels , where the oil flows into a parallel channel to the electroformed cavity (nickel or copper). Because of this the mould enables high temperature uniformity with direct heating and cooling of the electroformed shell, Uniform heating and cooling is important not only for good quality parts but also for good uniform wall thickness distribution in the rotationally moulded part. The experimental work with the manufactured prototype mould has enabled analysis of the thermal uniformity in the cavity, under different temperatures. Copyright © 2008 by ASME.

This paper presents the results from investigations into the differences in the rotational moulding and mechanical properties between pigmented polyethylene powder and micropellets. Both high shear and low shear pigment blending methods were examined, as were a range of pigment addition levels. This was followed by a series of mechanical and analytical tests on the rotomoulded articles to determine properties. Whilst micropellets tended to produce a different surface porosity than powder, few bubbles were evident within the wall thickness for both high shear and low shear blending. For high shear blending, with pigment addition levels up to 0.05%, similar impact properties were noticed for both powder and micropellets. Low shear blending resulted in more inconsistent impact values. There were also more visual inconsistencies in articles produced from powder.

Metal cylindrical storage structures of significant size, such as silos and vertical-axis tanks, are almost always constructed from many short cylindrical shells of different thickness as the stress resultants on the wall progressively increase towards the base. The resulting increases in thickness are always made in step changes using metal sheets of uniform thickness because of the availability of such source materials. The result is a shell with a stepped wall with multiple discrete steps in thickness. Such shells are very susceptible to buckling under external pressure when empty or partially filled, but the buckling mode may involve only part of the shell height due to the changes in shell thickness. These changes must therefore be accounted for within the design process. A new method of determining the critical buckling resistance of such shells was recently developed, and although it has been shown to be valid, the methodology for its application in practical design has not been set out or shown. This paper therefore briefly describes the new method and demonstrates the manner in which it can be used to produce rapid, safe assessments of cylindrical shells with a wide range of patterns of wall thickness changes. The results are then suitable for direct introduction into such documents as the European standard on metal shells [1] and the ECCS Recommendations [2].
