In a practical coupling system, a cylindrical microlens is used to collimate the emission of a high powerlaser diode (LD) in the dimension perpendicular to the junction plane. Using passive alignment, the LD isplaced in the focus of the cylindrical microlens generally, regardless of the performance of the multimodeoptical fiber and the LD. In this paper, a more complete analysis is arrived at by ray-tracing technique,by which the angle θ of the ray after refraction is computed as a function of the angle θo of the ray beforerefraction. The focus of the cylindrical microlens is not always the optimal position of the LD. In fact, inorder to achieve a higher coupling efficiency, the optimal distance from the LD to the cylindrical microlensis dependent on not only the radius R and the index of refraction n of the cylindrical microlens, but alsothe divergence angle of the LD in the dimension perpendicular to the junction plane and the numericalaperture (NA) of the multimode optical fiber. The results of this discussion are in good agreement withexperimental results.

The history of Laplace's equations for spherical and cylindrical droplets and the concept of dividing surface in Gibbs' thermodynamic theory of capillary phenomena are briefly reviewed. The existing theories of surface tensions of cylindrical droplets are briefly reviewed too. For cylindrical droplets, a new method to calculate the radius and the surface tension of the surface of tension is given. This method is suitable to be used by molecular dynamics simulations.

The effect of the initial states (disordered perpendicular cylinder structure vs. parallel cylinder structure) on the crystallization of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) thin films during cyclohexane annealing was investigated. The cylindrical domains perpendicular or parallel to the surface were obtained by controlling the film thickness. During solvent annealing, for the film with the perpendicular cylinders, the ordering degree of cylinders was increased.

Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) nanorods with different diameters have been prepared by using anodic aluminum oxide templates, and the orientation of the sPS crystals in the nanorods has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is found that the c axis of the beta' crystals preferentially oriented perpendicular to the axis of the nanorod, and the degree of orientation is lower as the diameter of the nanorod decreases. This unexpected result is attributed to nuclei formed at the surface of the nanopores and their subsequent growth, in addition to the preferential growth compatible with the pore direction by the nuclei formed in the bulk film and in the nanorods.

The cylindrical 'D'-size batteries were fabricated by polyaniline paste cathode and lithium foil anode sandwiched with microporous polypropylene separator. The electrolyte used was LiClO4 dissolved in a mixed solvent of propylene carbonate and dimethoxyethane. The results of charge/discharge curves, charge/discharge cycles, the short-circuit current, the open-circuit voltage storage and the change of discharge capacity with temperature, discharge current are reported.

Transmittance spectroelectrochemistry can be performed using a group of cylindrical microelectrodes. A dependence of absorbance on electrolytic charge during the potential step was derived. The rate constant of catalytic reaction of the ferrocyanide-ascorbic acid system was determined using single potential step-open circuit relaxation chronoabsorptometry. This is the first report that the reaction can still be considered as a pseudo-first-order reaction when the concentration of ascorbic acid is close to and even slightly lower than the concentration of ferrocyanide. The determined rate constant is in agreement with the reported value. The reason is that the diffusion of ascorbic acid toward electrode surface is contractive and the diffusion of the electrogenerated ferricyanide from the electrode surface to the bulk of solution is expansive.

The dielectric response of graded composites having general power-law-graded cylindrical inclusions under a uniform applied electric field is investigated. The dielectric profile of the cylindrical inclusions is modeled by the equation epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k) (where r is the radius of the cylindrical inclusions and c, b and k are parameters). Analytical solutions for the local electrical potentials are derived in terms of hypergeometric functions and the effective dielectric response of the graded composites is predicted in the dilute limit. Moreover, for a simple power-law dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = cr(k) and a linear dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = c(b + r), analytical expressions of the electrical potentials and the effective dielectric response are derived exactly from our results by taking the limits b -> 0 and k -> 1, respectively. For a higher concentration of inclusions, the effective dielectric response is estimated by an effective-medium approximation. In addition, we have discussed the effective response of graded cylindrical composites with a more complex dielectric profile of inclusion, epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k)e(beta r). The effective dielectric responses of linear composites with graded cylindrical particles are investigated under an external uniform electric field. As an example, with the Kummer function, we have obtained the analytical solutions of electric potentials of graded composites with a cylindrical inclusion particle of dielectric function profile epsilon(i) = cr(k)e(betar), where r is the inside distance of a point in cylindrical particle from the original point of cylindrical coordinates. In the dilute limit, the effective dielectric response is derived by means of the mean field method. For larger volume fraction, we have estimated the dielectric response of the graded composites with an effective medium approximation. Furthermore, from our results, we have discussed the effective responses of graded composites for power-law and exponential dielectric function profiles, respectively. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
