This article reports on analysis of fracture processes in reinforced concrete (RC) beams with acoustic emission (AE) technique. An emphasis was given to study the effect of loading rate on variation in AE based b-values with the development of cracks in RC structures. RC beams of length 3.2 m were tested under load control at a rate of 4 kN/s, 5 kN/s and 6 kN/s and the b-value analysis available in seismology was used to study the fracture process in RC structures. Moreover, the b-value is related to the strain in steel to assess the damage state. It is observed that when the loading rate is higher, quick cracking development lead to rapid fluctuations and drops in the b-values. Also it is observed that concrete behaves relatively more brittle at higher loading rates (or at higher strain rates). The average b-values are lower as a few but larger amplitudes of AE events occur in contrast to more number of low amplitude AE events occur at low loading rates (or at low strain rates). Reinforced concrete (RC) beams of span 3 m were tested under incremental cyclic load at different loading rates and simultaneously during the fracture process in the RC beams acoustic emissions (AE) were recorded. An attempt has been made to study the Kaiser effect as a measure of damage in RC beams. It was observed that RC beams made with high strength concrete under incremental cyclic loading showed an obvious Kaiser effect before the failure load. The results may be useful to study the damage in concrete structures and provide a reference for the application of Kaiser effect in engineering practice. (C) 2014 Politechnika Wroclawska. A closed-form expression for the dual of dissipation potential is derived within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics using the principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. Through this potential, a damage evolution law is proposed for concrete under fatigue loading using the concepts of damage mechanics in conjunction with fracture mechanics. The proposed law is used to compute damage in a volume element when a member is subjected to fatigue loading. The evolution of damage from microcracking to macrocracking of the entire member is captured through a series of volume elements failing one after the other. The number of loading cycles to failure of the member is obtained as the summation of number of cycles to failure for each individual volume element. A parametric study is conducted to determine the effect of the size of the volume element on the model's prediction of fatigue life. A global damage index is also defined, and the residual moment carrying capacity of damaged beams is evaluated. Through a deterministic sensitivity analysis, it is found that the load range and maximum aggregate size are the most influencing parameters on the fatigue life of a plain concrete beam.

In this work, a methodology to achieve ordinary-, medium-, and high-strength self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with and without mineral additions is proposed. The inclusion of Class F fly ash increases the density of SCC but retards the hydration rate, resulting in substantial strength gain only after 28 days. This delayed strength gain due to the use of fly ash has been considered in the mixture design model. The accuracy of the proposed mixture design model is validated with the present test data and mixture and strength data obtained from diverse sources reported in the literature.

An energy approach within the framework of thermodynamics is used to model the fatigue process in plain concrete. Fatigue crack growth is an irreversible process associated with an irreversible entropy gain. A closed-form expression for entropy generated during fatigue in terms of energy dissipated is derived using principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. An increase in compliance is considered as a measure of damage accumulated during fatigue. The entropy at final fatigue failure is shown to be independent of loading and geometry and is proposed as a material property. A relationship between energy dissipated and number of cycles of fatigue loading is obtained. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Fatigue damage in concrete is characterized by the simultaneous presence of micro and macrocracks. The theory of fracture mechanics conveniently handles the propagation of macrocracks, whereas damage mechanics precisely describes the state of microcracking. This paper provides a platform to correlate fracture mechanics and damage mechanics theories through an energy equivalence within a thermodynamic framework by equating the energy dissipated according to each theory. Through this correlation, damage corresponding to a given crack length could be obtained, and alternatively a discrete crack could be transformed into an equivalent damage zone. The results are validated using available experimental data on concrete fatigue including stiffness degradation and acoustic emission. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The micro-level properties of different self compacting concrete (SCC) mixes with and without mineral admixures are studied. The study considers SCC as a two phase material consisting of matrix and aggregate. Micro indentation technique is employed to obtain the hardness of individual phases and to compute the micro-property (modulus of elasticity). Using a self consistent homogenization procedure, the micro-property is scaled-up to obtain the macro-property which is shown to agree with the experimentally obtained macro values. It is seen that there exists a smaller interfacial transition zone at different ages of curing across all the mixes due to the presence of more fines in SCC. Also, there is no significant change in the property of the SCC having no fly ash or silica fume beyond 28 days whereas a substantial change in the micro and macro properties are seen in the SCC having fly ash and silica fume.

A steel frame is designed to measure the existing prestressing force in the concrete beams and slabs when embedded inside the concrete members. The steel frame is designed to work on the principles of a vibrating wire strain gauge and in the present study is referred to as a vibrating beam strain gauge (VBSG). The existing strain in the VBSG is evaluated using both frequency data on the stretched member and static strain corresponding to a fixed static load, measured using electrical strain gauges. The evaluated strain in the VBSG corresponds to the existing stain in the concrete surrounding the prestressing strands. The crack reopening load method is used to compute the existing prestressing force in the concrete members and is then compared with the existing prestressing force obtained from the VBSG at that section. Digital image correlation based surface deformation and change in neutral axis monitored by putting electrical strain gauges across the cross section, are used to compute the crack reopening load accurately. In this paper, the penetration process of ogive-nose projectiles into the semi-infinite concrete target is investigated by the dimensional analysis method and FEM simulation. With the dimensional analysis, main non-dimensional parameters which control the penetration depth are obtained with some reasonable hypothesis. Then, a new semi-empirical equation is present based on the original work of Forrestal et al., has only two non-dimensional combined variables with definite physical meanings. To verify this equation, prediction results are compared with experiments in a wide variation region of velocity. Then, a commercial FEM code, LS-DYNA, is used to simulate the complex penetration process, that also show the novel semi-empirical equation is reasonable for determining the penetration depth in a concrete target.

Concrete is heterogeneous and usually described as a three-phase material, where matrix, aggregate and interface are distinguished. To take this heterogeneity into consideration, the Generalized Beam (GB) lattice model is adopted. The GB lattice model is much more computationally efficient than the beam lattice model. Numerical procedures of both quasi-static method and dynamic method are developed to simulate fracture processes in uniaxial tensile tests conducted on a concrete panel. Cases of different loading rates are compared with the quasi-static case. It is found that the inertia effect due to load increasing becomes less important and can be ignored with the loading rate decreasing, but the inertia effect due to unstable crack propagation remains considerable no matter how low the loading rate is. Therefore, an unrealistic result will be obtained if a fracture process including unstable cracking is simulated by the quasi-static procedure.

Concrete is usually described as a three-phase material, where matrix, aggregate and interface zones are distinguished. The beam lattice model has been applied widely by many investigators to simulate fracture processes in concrete. Due to the extremely large computational effort, however, the beam lattice model faces practical difficulties. In our investigation, a new lattice called generalized beam (GB) lattice is developed to reduce computational effort. Numerical experiments conducted on a panel subjected to uniaxial tension show that the GB lattice model can reproduce the load-displacement curves and crack patterns in agreement to what are observed in tests. Moreover, the effects of the particle overlay on the fracture process are discussed in detail. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
