Cord entanglement affects the majority of monoamniotic (MA) twins, accounting for the high proportion of intrauterine deaths of MA twins, and it is often present from early gestation. 3D ultrasound can be used to acquire volume data comprising information on umbilical colour Doppler flow, providing a very graphic depiction of cord entanglement. We have used 2D, "conventional" and a novel 3D display of colour Doppler ultrasound showing cord entanglement.

This paper presents two studies pertaining to the use of virtual characters applied in clinical forensic rehabilitation of sex offenders. The first study is about the validation of the perceived age of virtual characters designed to simulate primary and secondary sexual character of typical adult and child individuals. The second study puts to use these virtual characters in comparing a group of sex offenders and a group of non deviant individuals on their sexual arousal responses as recorded in virtual immersion. Finally, two clinical vignettes illustrating the use of made-to-measure virtual characters to more closely fit sexual preferences are presented in Discussion.

In this paper we present XSAMPL3D, a novel language for the high-level representation of actions performed on objects by (virtual) humans. XSAMPL3D was designed to serve as action representation language in an imitation-based approach to character animation: First, a human demonstrates a sequence of object manipulations in an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment. From this demonstration, an XSAMPL3D description is automatically derived that represents the actions in terms of high-level action types and involved objects. The XSAMPL3D action description can then be used for the synthesis of animations where virtual humans of different body sizes and proportions reproduce the demonstrated action. Actions are encoded in a compact and human-readable XML-format. Thus, XSAMPL3D describtions are also amenable to manual authoring, e.g. for rapid prototyping of animations when no immersive VR environment is at the animator's disposal. However, when XSAMPL3D descriptions are derived from VR interactions, they can accomodate many details of the demonstrated action, such as motion trajectiories, hand shapes and other hand-object relations during grasping. Such detail would be hard to specify with manual motion authoring techniques only. Through the inclusion of language features that allow the representation of all relevant aspects of demonstrated object manipulations, XSAMPL3D is a suitable action representation language for the imitation-based approach to character animation.

We report the intraoperative courses of 2 consecutive Berlin Heart Excor® Pediatric Ventricular Assist Device implantations, in which transcranial Doppler ultrasonography helped to detect macroscopically undetected residual air bubbles captured in the pump after air removal had been correctly performed according to manufacturer's specifications. Our experience with these cases suggests that a beat-to beat deairing maneuver guided by transcranial Doppler is a useful strategy for reducing cerebral exposure to perioperative gaseous microembolism.

INTRODUCTION The knowledge about adaptive mechanisms of monochorionic placentas to fulfill the demands of two instead of one fetus is largely speculative. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of chorionicity on birth weight and placental weight in twin pregnancies. METHODS Forty Monochorionic (MC) and 43 dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancies were included in this retrospective study. Individual and total (sum of both twins) birth weights, placental weights ratios between placental and birth weights and observed-to-expected (O/E)-ratios were calculated and analyzed. Additionally, we investigated whether in twin pregnancies placental and birth weights follow the law of allometric metabolic scaling. RESULTS MC pregnancies showed higher placental O/E-ratios than DC ones (2.25 ± 0.85 versus 1.66 ± 0.61; p < 0.05), whereas the total neonatal birth weight O/E-ratios were not different. In DC twins total placental weights correlated significantly with gestational age (r = 0.74, p < 0.001), but not in MC twins. Analysis of deliveries ≤32 weeks revealed that the placenta to birth weight ratio in MC twins was higher than in matched DC twins (0.49 ± 0.3 versus 0.24 ± 0.03; p = 0.03). Allometric metabolic scaling revealed that dichorionic twin placentas scale with birth weight, while the monochorionic ones do not. DISCUSSION The weight of MC placentas compared to that of DC is not gestational age dependent in the third trimester. Therefore an early accelerated placental growth pattern has to be postulated which leads to an excess placental mass particularly below 32 weeks of gestation. The monochorionic twins do not follow allometric metabolic scaling principle making them more vulnerable to placental compromise.
