At the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (19,000 to 11,000 years ago), atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations rose while the Delta14C of atmospheric carbon dioxide declined**1, 2. These changes have been attributed to an injection of carbon dioxide with low radiocarbon activity from an oceanic abyssal reservoir that was isolated from the atmosphere for several thousand years before deglaciation**3. The current understanding points to the Southern Ocean as the main area of exchange between these reservoirs4. Intermediate water formed in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica would have then carried the old carbon dioxide signature to the lower-latitude oceans**5, 6. Here we reconstruct the Delta14C signature of Antarctic Intermediate Water off the coast of Chile for the past 20,000 years, using paired 14C ages of benthic and planktonic foraminifera. In contrast to the above scenario, we find that the delta14C signature of the Antarctic Intermediate Water closely matches the modelled surface ocean Delta14C, precluding the influence of an old carbon source. We suggest that if the abyssal ocean is indeed the source of the radiocarbon-depleted carbon dioxide, an alternative path for the mixing and propagation of its carbon dioxide may be required to explain the observed changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and radiocarbon activity.

We report comprehensive trace element and Sr-isotope data for microbial carbonates from the Archaean Mushandike limestone, Masvingo Greenstone Belt, Zimbabwe. The stromatolites have very coherent REE + Y patterns and share the essential shale-normalised characteristics of other Archaean marine precipitates (positive La and Gd anomalies, absence of a negative Cc anomaly and a strongly superchondritic Y/Ho ratio). Mixing models constrain the maximum amount of shale contamination to 0.25-1% and calculated detritus-free carbonate REE + Y systematics require precipitation from seawater. In terms of light-REE over heavy-REE depletion, however, the studied samples are very different from all other known Archaean marine precipitates. In shale-normalised plots, the Mushandike samples yield a negative slope. A very restricted, regional input source of the dissolved load is indicated because normalisation with locally occurring tonalite gneiss REE + Y data yields a pattern closely resembling typical shale-normalised Archaean marine chemical sediments. The disappearance of a negative Eu anomaly when patterns are normalised with local tonalite gneiss strengthens this interpretation. Sr-isotope ratios are strongly correlated with trace element contents and ratios, which explains the modest scatter in Sr-isotope ratios as representing (minor) clastic contamination. Importantly, even the least contaminated samples have very radiogenic initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios (0.7184) implying Sr input from an ancient high Rb/Sr source, such as the early Archaean gneisses of south-central Zimbabwe. A local ancient (3.5-3.8 Ga) source is also indicated by previously published Pb-isotope datasets for the Mushandike stromatolites. This is entirely compatible with the occurrence of 3.7-3.8 Ga zircons in quartzites and metapelites from comparably old greenstone belts within less than 150 km of the studied locality. Comparison of the Pb-isotope ratios of the Mushandike stromatolites with 2.7 and 2.6 Ga old stromatolites from the neighbouring, Belingwe Greenstone Belt demonstrates differences in initial isotope composition that relate to the extent of exchange with the open ocean. The development of numerous basins on old continental crust, with water masses variably restricted from the open ocean. suggests a lack of strong vertical topography on this late Archaean craton. The free-ion model (FIM) describes iron ( Fe) uptake by barley [ Hordeum vulgare ( L.) 'Grammett'] as being controlled by the activity of the buffered, free, uncomplexed Fe3+ in solution. Chelators' effect on Fe uptake by barley was evaluated and the rate of exchange of Fe between chelators was examined. Barley was grown for two weeks in a low-Fe nutrient solution and transferred to solutions varying in Fe and chelators for 6 h assays. Shoot Fe-59 was higher in barley grown in citrate (7743 and 1928 Fe-59 Bq g(-1)) than in NTA(3220 and 1113 Fe-59 Bq g(-1); P = 0.045) despite similar free-Fe3+ activities. A comparison of Fe uptake by barley from solutions with pFe(3+) activities of 17.1 and 24.6 showed < 5% was from indiscriminate apoplastic-flow uptake (3250 Fe-59 Bq g(-1) vs. 160 Fe-59 Bq g(-1)). Using nutrient solutions from the barley studies but without plants, Fe exchange between chelators and a simulant for the barley phytosiderophore occurred within hours ( for NTA and citrate), or days ( EDTA and HEDTA). Results were similar between the barley and Fe-exchange experiments for the two nutrient-solution treatments where the same Fe3+ activities but different total-Fe concentrations were used: the higher total-Fe treatment resulted in six-fold higher shoot Fe-59, while in the Fe-exchange study that treatment had six-fold more Fe bound to the phytosiderophore simulant after 2 d. Results indicated deviations from the FIM were not explained by indiscriminate-flow uptake, and that sluggish Fe-exchange reactions between chelate and phytosiderophoresimulant, not FIM guidelines, may be more important in explaining Fe uptake from synthetic chelates by Fe-deficient barley.

This article investigates the behaviour of exchange rates across different regimes for a post-Bretton Woods period. The exchange rate regime classification is based on the classification of Frankel et al. (2004) who condensed the 10 categories of exchange rate regimes reported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) into three categories. Panel unitroot tests and panel cointegration are used to examine the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) hypothesis. The latter test is used to check for both the weak and strong forms of PPP. The panel unit-root tests show no evidence of PPP and suggest there is no difference in the behaviour of exchange rates across different regimes. However, failure to detect PPP across any of the regimes could be due to structural breaks. This assumption is reinforced by the results of cointegration tests, which suggest that there exists at least a weak form of PPP for the different regimes. The evidence for strong PPP decreases as the exchange rate regime moves away from a flexible exchange rate regime.

A lack of commitment between Japanese buyers and their foreign trading partners is often attributed as the cause of failure for foreign sellers in Japan. Due to Japanese idiosyncrasies, commitment plays a dominant, but poorly understood, role in the business relationship between foreign sellers and Japanese buyers. This research examines the role that the attachment bond between U.S. sellers and Japanese buyers plays in mediating the impact of exchange characteristics on performance in the domestic Japanese market. An analysis of 198 U.S. sellers in Japan demonstrates the complex web of calculative, social, and normative factors that account for the commitment existing in this foreign–Japanese trading relationship. The results highlight the importance of specific investments and cultural sensitivity for the seller’s commitment and the role of trust and switching costs in the buyer’s commitment.

This paper examines the source country determinants of FDI into Japan. The paper highlights certain methodological and theoretical weaknesses in the previous literature and offers some explanations for hitherto ambiguous results. Specifically, the paper highlights the importance of panel data analysis, and the identification of fixed effects in the analysis rather than simply pooling the data. Indeed, we argue that many of the results reported elsewhere are a feature of this mis-specification. To this end, pooled, fixed effects and random effects estimates are compared. The results suggest that FDI into Japan is inversely related to trade flows, such that trade and FDI are substitutes. Moreover, the results also suggest that FDI increases with home country political and economic stability. The paper also shows that previously reported results, regarding the importance of exchange rates, relative borrowing costs and labour costs in explaining FDI flows, are sensitive to the econometric specification and estimation approach. The paper also discusses the importance of these results within a policy context. In recent years Japan has sought to attract FDI, though many firms still complain of barriers to inward investment penetration in Japan. The results show that cultural and geographic distance are only of marginal importance in explaining FDI, and that the results are consistent with the market-seeking explanation of FDI. As such, the attitude to risk in the source country is strongly related to the size of FDI flows to Japan. © 2007 The Authors Journal compilation © 2007 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

This paper examines the impact on stock price predictability that the removal of exchange controls had on major European countries during the late 1970s and 1980s. It is found that for Germany, Switzerland and France, the removal of exchange controls led to an increase in the interdependence between these and other markets. In contrast, there is little evidence of an increase in interdependence for the UK and Italy.
