Linear and nonlinear dynamics of a dust bicrystal consisting of positive and negative dust particles
Resumo:
A dusty plasma crystalline configuration consisting of charged dust grains of alternating charge sign (.../+/-/+/-/+/...) and mass is considered. Both charge and mass of each dust species are taken to be constant. Considering the equations of longitudinal motion, a dispersion relation for linear longitudinal vibrations is derived from first principles and then analyzed. Two harmonic modes are obtained, namely, an acoustic mode and an inverse-dispersive optic-like one. The nonlinear aspects of acoustic longitudinal dust grain motion are addressed via a generalized Boussinesq (and, alternatively, a generalized Korteweg-de Vries) description. The nonlinear interaction between magnetic-field-aligned coherent whistlers and dust-acoustic perturbations (DAPs) in a magnetized dusty plasma is considered. The interaction is governed by a pair of equations consisting of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the modulated whistler wave packet and an equation for the nonresonant DAPs in the presence of the ponderomotive force generated by the whistlers. The coupled equations are employed to investigate the occurrence of modulational instability, in addition to the formation of whistler envelope solitons. This investigation is relevant to amplitude modulated electron whistlers in magnetized space dusty plasmas. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A pair plasma consisting of two types of ions, possessing equal masses and opposite charges, is considered. The nonlinear propagation of modulated electrostatic wave packets is studied by employing a two-fluid plasma model. Considering propagation parallel to the external magnetic field, two distinct electrostatic modes are obtained, namely a quasiacoustic lower moddfe and a Langmuir-like, as optic-type upper one, in agreement with experimental observations and theoretical predictions. Considering small yet weakly nonlinear deviations from equilibrium, and adopting a multiple-scale technique, the basic set of model equations is reduced to a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the slowly varying electric field perturbation amplitude. The analysis reveals that the lower (acoustic) mode is stable and may propagate in the form of a dark-type envelope soliton (a void) modulating a carrier wave packet, while the upper linear mode is intrinsically unstable, and may favor the formation of bright-type envelope soliton (pulse) modulated wave packets. These results are relevant to recent observations of electrostatic waves in pair-ion (fullerene) plasmas, and also with respect to electron-positron plasma emission in pulsar magnetospheres. The nonlinear coupling between the Alfven-Rao (AR) and dust-Alfven (DA) modes in a uniform magnetized dusty plasma is considered. For this purpose, multi- fluid equations (composed of the continuity and momentum equations), the laws of Faraday and Ampere and the quasi-neutrality condition are adopted to derive a set of equations, which show how the fields of the modes are nonlinearly coupled. The equations are then used to investigate decay and modulational instabilities in magnetized dusty plasmas. Stationary nonlinear solutions of the coupled AR and DA equations are presented. The relevance of the investigation to nonlinear phenomena (instabilities and localized structures) in interstellar molecular clouds is also discussed.

The oblique modulational instability of dust acoustic (DA) waves in an unmagnetized warm dusty plasma with nonthermal ions, taking into account dust grain charge variation (charging), is investigated. A nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation governing the slow modulation of the wave amplitude is derived. The effects of dust temperature, dust charge variation, ion deviation from Maxwellian equilibrium (nonthermality) and constituent species' concentration on the modulational instability of DA waves are examined. It is found that these parameters modify significantly the oblique modulational instability domain in the k-theta plane. Explicit expressions for the instability rate and threshold have been obtained in terms of the dispersion laws of the system. The possibility and conditions for the existence of different types of localized excitations are also discussed. The findings of this investigation may be useful in understanding the stable electrostatic wave packet acceleration mechanisms close to the Moon, and also enhances our knowledge on the occurrence of instability associated to pickup ions around unmagnetized bodies, such as comets, Mars, and Venus.

The nonlinear amplitude modulation of electrostatic waves propagating in a collisionless two-component plasma consisting of negative and positive species of equal mass and absolute charge is investigated. Pair-ion (e.g., fullerene) and electron-positron (e-p) plasmas (neglecting recombination) are covered by this description. Amplitude perturbation oblique to the direction of propagation of the wave has been considered. Two distinct linear electrostatic modes exist, namely an acoustic lower mode and Langmuir-type optic-type upper one. The behavior of each of these modes is examined from the modulational stability point of view. The stability criteria are investigated, depending on the electrostatic carrier wave number, the angle theta between the modulation and propagation directions, and the positron-to-electron temperature ratio sigma. The analysis shows that modulated electrostatic wavepackets associated to the lower (acoustic) mode are unstable, for small values of carrier wave number k (i.e., for large wavelength lambda) and for finite (small) values of the angle theta (yet stable for higher theta), while those related to the upper (optic-like) mode are stable for large values of the angle theta only, in the same limit, yet nearly for all values of sigma. These results are of relevance in astrophysical contexts (e.g., in pulsar environments), where e-p plasmas are encountered, or in pair fullerene-ion plasmas, in laboratory. The nonlinear amplitude modulation of electromagnetic waves propagating in pair plasmas, e.g., electron-positron or fullerene pair-ion plasmas, as well as three-component pair plasmas, e.g., electron-positron-ion plasmas or doped (dusty) fullerene pair-ion plasmas, assuming wave propagation in a direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, obeying the ordinary (O-) mode dispersion characteristics. Adopting a multiple scales (reductive perturbation) technique, a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation is shown to govern the modulated amplitude of the magnetic field (perturbation). The conditions for modulation instability are investigated, in terms of relevant parameters. It is shown that localized envelope modes (envelope solitons) occur, of the bright- (dark-) type envelope solitons, i.e., envelope pulses (holes, respectively), for frequencies below (above) an explicit threshold. Long wavelength waves with frequency near the effective pair plasma frequency are therefore unstable, and may evolve into bright solitons, while higher frequency (shorter wavelength) waves are stable, and may propagate as envelope holes.(c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

The nonlinear dynamics of a rotating magnetoplasma consisting of electrons, positrons and stationary positive ions is considered. The basic set of hydrodynamic and Poisson equations are reduced to a Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation for the electric potential. The ZK equation is solved by applying an improved modified extended tanh-function method (2008 Phys. Lett. A 372 5691) and its characteristics are investigated. A set of new solutions are derived, including localized solitary waves, periodic nonlinear waveforms and divergent (explosive) pulses. The characteristics of these nonlinear excitations are investigated in detail.

We study the existence and stability of multisite discrete breathers in two prototypical non-square Klein-Gordon lattices, namely a honeycomb and a hexagonal one. In the honeycomb case we consider six-site configurations and find that for soft potential and positive coupling the out-of-phase breather configuration and the charge-two vortex breather are linearly stable, while the in-phase and charge-one vortex states are unstable. In the hexagonal lattice, we first consider three-site configurations. In the case of soft potential and positive coupling, the in-phase configuration is unstable and the charge-one vortex is linearly stable. The out-of-phase configuration here is found to always be linearly unstable. We then turn to six-site configurations in the hexagonal lattice. The stability results in this case are the same as in the six-site configurations in the honeycomb lattice. For all configurations in both lattices, the stability results are reversed in the setting of either hard potential or negative coupling. The study is complemented by numerical simulations which are in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Since neither the form of the on-site potential nor the sign of the coupling parameter involved have been prescribed, this description can accommodate inverse-dispersive systems (e. g. supporting backward waves) such as transverse dust-lattice oscillations in dusty plasma (Debye) crystals or analogous modes in molecular chains.

The evolution of the intensity of a relativistic laser beam propagating through a dense quantum plasma is investigated, by considering different plasma regimes. A cold quantum fluid plasma and then a thermal quantum description(s) is (are) adopted, in comparison with the classical case of reference. Considering a Gaussian beam cross-section, we investigate both the longitudinal compression and lateral/longitudinal localization of the intensity of a finite-radius electromagnetic pulse. By employing a quantum plasma fluid model in combination with Maxwell's equations, we rely on earlier results on the quantum dielectric response, to model beam-plasma interaction. We present an extensive parametric investigation of the dependence of the longitudinal pulse compression mechanism on the electron density in cold quantum plasmas, and also study the role of the Fermi temperature in thermal quantum plasmas. Our numerical results show pulse localization through a series of successive compression cycles, as the pulse propagates through the plasma. A pulse of 100 fs propagating through cold quantum plasma is compressed to a temporal size of approximate to 1.35 attosecond and a spatial size of approximate to 1.08 10(-3) cm. Incorporating Fermi pressure via a thermal quantum plasma model is shown to enhance localization effects. A 100 fs pulse propagating through quantum plasma with a Fermi temperature of 350 K is compressed to a temporal size of approximate to 0.6 attosecond and a spatial size of approximate to 2.4 10(-3) cm. We analyze the optical properties of plasmonic nanorod metamaterials in the epsilon-near-zero regime and show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the performance of these composites is strongly affected by nonlocal response of the effective permittivity tensor. We provide the evidence of interference between main and additional waves propagating in the room-temperature nanorod metamaterials and develop an analytical description of this phenomenon. Additional waves are present in the majority of low-loss epsilon-near-zero structures and should be explicitly considered when designing applications of epsilon-near-zero composites, as they represent a separate communication channel.

Silver nanorods have been grown by electrodeposition into thin film porous alumina templates (AAO). Optical transmission measurements using p-polarized incident white light shows clear plasmon resonance extinction peaks. We successfully model the dependence on angle in incidence of extinction peak height and position using a multiple-multipoles (MMP) approach with the different spectral features being clearly associated with the effective electric field distribution and coupling between individual nanorods.

We present a simple quantum mechanical model to describe Coulomb explosion of H-2(+) and D-2(+) by short, intense infrared laser pulses. The model is based on the length gauge version of the molecular strong-field approximation and is valid when the process of dissociation prior to ionization is negligible. The results are compared with recent experimental data for the proton kinetic energy spectrum [Th. Ergler , Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 093001 (2005); D. S. Murphy , J. Phys. B 40, S359 (2007)]. Using a Franck-Condon distribution over initial vibrational states, the theory reproduces the overall shape of the spectrum with only a small overestimation of slow protons. The agreement between theory and experiment can be made perfect by using a non-Frank-Condon initial distribution characteristic for H-2(+) (D-2(+)) targets produced by strong-field ionization of H-2 (D-2). For comparison, we also present results obtained by two different tunneling models for this process.

In the presence of inhomogeneities, defects and currents, the equations describing a Bose-condensed ensemble of alkali atoms have to be solved numerically. By combining both linear and nonlinear equations within a Discrete Variable Representation framework, we describe a computational scheme for the solution of the coupled Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) and nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations for fields in a 3D spheroidal potential. We use the method to calculate the collective excitation spectrum and quasiparticle mode densities for excitations of a Bose condensed gas in a spheroidal trap. The method is compared against finite-difference and spectral methods, and we find the DVR computational scheme to be superior in accuracy and efficiency for the cases we consider. A time-dependent method for calculating the collective excitation frequencies and densities of a trapped, inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with circulation is presented. The results are compared with time-independent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The method is based on time-dependent linear-response theory combined with spectral analysis of moments of the excitation modes of interest. The technique is straightforward to apply, extremely efficient in our implementation with parallel fast Fourier transform methods, and produces highly accurate results. For high dimensionality or low symmetry the time-dependent approach is a more practical computational scheme and produces accurate and reliable data. The method is suitable for general trap geometries, condensate flows and condensates permeated with defects and vortex structures.
