An experimental and numerical investigation into transonic shock/boundary-layer interactions in rectangular ducts has been performed. Experiments have shown that flow development in the corners of transonic shock/boundary-layer interactions in confined channels can have a significant impact on the entire flowfield. As shock strength is increased from M∞ = 1:3 to 1.5, the flowfield becomes very slightly asymmetrical. The interaction of corner flows with one another is thought to be a potential cause of this asymmetry. Thus, factors that govern the size of corner interactions (such as interaction strength) and their proximity to one another (such as tunnel aspect ratio) can affect flow symmetry. The results of the computational study show reasonable agreement with experiments, although simulations with particular turbulence models predict highly asymmetrical solutions for flows that were predominantly symmetrical in experiments. These discrepancies are attributed to the tendency of numerical schemes to overprediction corner-interaction size, and this also accounts for why computational fluid dynamics predicts the onset of asymmetry at lower shock strengths than in experiments. The findings of this study highlight the importance of making informed decisions about imposing artificial constraints on symmetry and boundary conditions for internal transonic flows. Future effort into modeling corner flows accurately is required. Copyright © 2011 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.

The notion of coupling within a design, particularly within the context of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), is much used but ill-defined. There are many different ways of measuring design coupling, but these measures vary in both their conceptions of what design coupling is and how such coupling may be calculated. Within the differential geometry framework which we have previously developed for MDO systems, we put forth our own design coupling metric for consideration. Our metric is not commensurate with similar types of coupling metrics, but we show that it both provides a helpful geo- metric interpretation of coupling (and uncoupledness in particular) and exhibits greater generality and potential for analysis than those similar metrics. Furthermore, we discuss how the metric might be profitably extended to time-varying problems and show how the metric's measure of coupling can be applied to multi-objective optimization problems (in unconstrained optimization and in MDO). © 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. The present study aims at accounting for swirling mean flow effects on rotor trailing-edge noise. Indeed, the mean flow in between the rotor and the stator of the fan or of a compressor stage is highly swirling. The extension of Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings' acoustic analogy in a medium at rest with moving surfaces and of Goldstein's acoustic analogy in a circular duct with uniform mean flow to a swirling mean flow in an annular duct is introduced. It is first applied to tonal noise. In most cases, the swirl modifies the pressure distribution downstream of the fan. In several configurations, when the swirl is rather close to a solid body swirl, it is often sufficient to apply a simple Doppler effect correction when predicting the duct modes in uniform mean flow in order to predict accurately the noise radiated with swirl. However, in other realistic configurations, the swirling mean-flow effect cannot be addressed using this simple Doppler effect correction. Second, a rotor trailing-edge noise model accounting for both the effects of the annular duct and the swirling mean flow is developed and applied to a realistic fan rotor with different swirling and sheared mean flows (and as a result different associated blade stagger angles). The benchmark cases are built from the Boeing 18-inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test. In all cases the swirling mean flow has an effect. In some cases the a simple Doppler effect may address it, but, in other realistic configurations our acoustic analogy with swirl is needed. © 2012 by the authors. UV radiation is one of many harmful factors found in space that are detrimental to organisms on earth in space exploration. In the present work, we examined the role of antioxidant system in Nostoc sphaeroides Kutz (Cyanobacterium) and the effects of exogenously applied antioxidant molecules on its photosynthetic rate under UV-B radiation. It was found that UV-B radiation promoted the activity of antioxidant system to protect photosystem 11 (PSII) and exogenously applied antioxidant: sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) had an obvious protection on PSII activity under UV-B radiation. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7) and content of NIDA (malondialdehyde) and ASC (ascorbate) were improved by 0.5 mM and 1 mM SNP, but 0.1 mM SNP decreased the activity of antioxidant system. Addition of exogenous NAC decreased the activity of SOD, POD, CAT and the content MDA and ASC. In contrast, exogenously applied NAC increased GSH content. The results suggest that exogenous SNP and NAC may protect algae by different mechanisms: SNP may play double roles as both sources of reactive free radicals as well as ROS scavengers in mediating the protective role of PSII on algae under UV-B radiation. On the other hand, NAC functions as an antioxidant or precursor of glutathione, which could protect PSII directly from UV-B radiation. (c) 2007 COSPAR, Published by Elsevier Ltd. The propagation of unsteady disturbances in a slowlyvarying cylindrical duct carrying mean swirling flow is investigated using a multiple-scales technique. This is applicable to turbomachinery flow behind a rotor stage when the swirl and axial velocities are of the same order. The presence of mean vorticity couples acoustic and vorticity equations which produces an eigenvalue problem that is not self-adjoint unlike that for irrotational mean flow. In order to determine the amplitude variation along the duct, an adjoint solution for the coupled system of equations is derived. The solution breaks down where a mode changes from cut on to cut off. In this region the amplitude is governed by a form of Airy's equation, and the effect of swirl is to introduce a small shift in the origin of the Airy function away from the turning-point location. The variation of axial wavenumber and amplitude along the duct is calculated. In hard-walled ducts mean swirl is shown to produce much larger amplitude variation along the duct compared with a nonswirling flow. Mean swirl also has a large effect in ducts with finite-impedance walls which differs depending on whether modes are co-rotating with the swirl or counter rotating. © 2001 by A.J. Successions of lake ecosystems from clear-water, macrophyte-rich conditions into turbid states with abundant phytoplankton have taken place in many shallow lakes in China. However, little is know about the change of carbon fluxes in lakes during such processes. We conducted a case study in Lake Biandantang to investigate the change of carbon fluxes during such a regime shift. Dissolved aquatic carbon and gaseous carbon (methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2)) across air-water interface in three sites with different vegetation covers and compositions were studied and compared. CH4 emissions from three sites were 0.62 +/- 0.36, 0.70 +/- 0.36, and 1.31 +/- 0.57 mg m(-2) h(-1), respectively. Correlation analysis showed that macrophytes, rather than phytoplankton, directly positively affected CH4 emission. CO2 fluxes of three sites in Lake Biandantang were significantly different, and the average values were 77.8 +/- 20.4, 52.2 +/- 14.1 and 3.6 +/- 26.8 mg m(-2) h(-1), respectively. There were an evident trend that the larger macrophyte biomass, the lower CO2 emissions. Correlation analysis showed that in different sites, dominant plant controlled CO2 flux across air-water interface. In a year cycle, the percents of gaseous carbon release from lake accounting for net primary production were significantly different (from 39.3% to 2.8%), indicating that with the decline of macrophytes and regime shift, the lake will be a larger carbon source to the atmosphere. Up to now, there have been few studies in the annual fluxes of greenhouse gases in lakes of subtropical regions. The fluxes of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) across air-water interface were measured in a shallow, hypereutrophic, subtropical Lake Donghu (China) over a year cycle, using a static chamber technique. During the year, Lake Donghu emitted CH4 and CO2; the average flux of CH4 and CO2 was 23.3 +/- 18.6 and 332.3 +/- 160.1 mg m(-2) d(-1), respectively. The fluxes of CH4 and CO2 showed strong seasonal dynamics: CH4 emission rate was highest in summer, remaining low in other seasons, whereas CO2 was adsorbed from the atmosphere in spring and summer, but exhibited a large emission in winter. Annual carbon (C) budget across air-water interface in Lake Donghu was estimated to be 7.52 +/- 4.07 x 10(8) g. CH4 emission was correlated positively with net primary production (NPP) and temperature, whereas CO2 flux correlated negatively with NPP and temperature; however, there were no significant relationships between the fluxes of CH4 and CO2 and dissolved organic carbon, a significant difference from boreal lakes, indicating that phytoplankton rather than allochthonous matter regulated C dynamics across air-water interface of subtropical lake enriched nutrient content. Total alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations were measured in municipal wastewater, and a shallow Chinese freshwater lake receiving it. Activities of Dissolved alkaline phosphatase ( ADAP) in overlying and interstitial water were also analyzed monthly at three sites for several years. The lake was enriched with SRP and alkaline phosphatase by discharge of the wastewater, indicating that the inclusion of APA for estimating water pollution was reasonable. Annual data showed that APA in coarser fraction was significantly higher at the site receiving more wastewaters, both in surface and overlying water, suggesting that resuspension of enzyme most likely occurred in the basin heavily discharged. ADAP was an order of magnitude higher in the wastewater than those in lake waters, and was generally higher in interstitial water, a feature more striking at the site receiving more discharges. Besides, it was irrespectively inhibited by Na2WO4, L-cysteine and EDTA-Na, but stimulated by Cu2+, Zn2+, CTAB and Triton X-100 in interstitial, overlying and surface waters. This similarity of responding patterns to the stressors indicated an analogy between dissolved alkaline phosphatase in water column and that in interstitial water, supporting the hypothesis that the polluted sediments act as source of dissolved alkaline phosphatase in eutrophic lakes.

Total air suspended particles (PM 100) collected from an urban location near a traffic line in Wuhan, China, were examined for estrogen using a recombinant yeast bioassay. Wuhan, located at the central part of China, is the fourth biggest city in China with 7 million populations. Today, Wuhan has developed into the biggest city and the largest traveling center of central China, becoming one of the important bases of industry, education and research. Wuhan is right at the confluent point of Yangzi River, the third longest river in the world, and its largest distributary Hanjiang, with mountains and more than 100 takes in downtown area. Therefore, by its unique landscape, Wuhan has formed clear four seasons with relatively long winter and summer and short spring and autumn. Foggy weather usually happen in early spring. The yeast line used in this assay stably expresses human estrogen receptor-alpha. Weak but clear estrogenic activities were detected in the organic phase of crude extracts of air particle materials (APM) in both sunny and foggy weather by 0.19-0.79 mug E2/gPM(100) which were statistically significantly elevated relative to the blank control responding from 20% to 50% of the maximum E2 response, and the estrogenic activity was much higher in foggy weather than in sunny weather. The estrogenic activities in the sub-fractions from chromatographic separation of APM sampled in foggy days were also determined. The results indicated that the responses of the fractions were obviously higher than the crude extracts. Since there is no other large pollution source nearby, the estrogenic material was most likely from vehicle emissions, house heating sources and oil fumes of house cooking. The GC/MS analysis of the PM100 collected under foggy weather showed that there were many phenol derivatives, oxy-PAHs and resin acids which have been reported as environmental estrogens. These results of the analysis of estrogenic potency in sunny and foggy weather in a subtropical city of China indicate that further studies are required to investigate the actual risks for the associated health and atmospheric system.
