The most common trends observed in ammonoid evolution during ecologically stable periods are characterized by an increase of shell curvature (e.g. evolute to involute), by the development of more complex ornamentation (flexuosity of ribbing, appearance of nodes and spines) and by a long term increase of the suture line's fractal dimension. Major evolutionary jumps in ammonoids occur during severe extinction events, and are characterized by the sudden appearance of simple, primitive-looking forms which are similar to remote ancestors of their more complex immediate progenitors. Such forms are interpreted as atavistic. According to this hypothesis, homeomorphic species generated during such sublethal stress events can be separated by several millions of years.

The development and tests of an iterative reconstruction algorithm for emission tomography based on Bayesian statistical concepts are described. The algorithm uses the entropy of the generated image as a prior distribution, can be accelerated by the choice of an exponent, and converges uniformly to feasible images by the choice of one adjustable parameter. A feasible image has been defined as one that is consistent with the initial data (i.e. it is an image that, if truly a source of radiation in a patient, could have generated the initial data by the Poisson process that governs radioactive disintegration). The fundamental ideas of Bayesian reconstruction are discussed, along with the use of an entropy prior with an adjustable contrast parameter, the use of likelihood with data increment parameters as conditional probability, and the development of the new fast maximum a posteriori with entropy (FMAPE) Algorithm by the successive substitution method. It is shown that in the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and FMAPE algorithms, the only correct choice of initial image for the iterative procedure in the absence of a priori knowledge about the image configuration is a uniform field.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to assess the feasibility of minimally invasive digestive anastomosis using a modular flexible magnetic anastomotic device made up of a set of two flexible chains of magnetic elements. The assembly possesses a non-deployed linear configuration which allows it to be introduced through a dedicated small-sized applicator into the bowel where it takes the deployed form. A centering suture allows the mating between the two parts to be controlled in order to include the viscerotomy between the two magnetic rings and the connected viscera. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Eight pigs were involved in a 2-week survival experimental study. In five colorectal anastomoses, the proximal device was inserted by a percutaneous endoscopic technique, and the colon was divided below the magnet. The distal magnet was delivered transanally to connect with the proximal magnet. In three jejunojejunostomies, the first magnetic chain was injected in its linear configuration through a small enterotomy. Once delivered, the device self-assembled into a ring shape. A second magnet was injected more distally through the same port. The centering sutures were tied together extracorporeally and, using a knot pusher, magnets were connected. Ex vivo strain testing to determine the compression force delivered by the magnetic device, burst pressure of the anastomosis, and histology were performed. RESULTS: Mean operative time including endoscopy was 69.2 ± 21.9 min, and average time to full patency was 5 days for colorectal anastomosis. Operative times for jejunojejunostomies were 125, 80, and 35 min, respectively. The postoperative period was uneventful. Burst pressure of all anastomoses was ≥ 110 mmHg. Mean strain force to detach the devices was 6.1 ± 0.98 and 12.88 ± 1.34 N in colorectal and jejunojejunal connections, respectively. Pathology showed a mild-to-moderate inflammation score. CONCLUSIONS: The modular magnetic system showed enormous potential to create minimally invasive digestive anastomoses, and may represent an alternative to stapled anastomoses, being easy to deliver, effective, and low cost.

Aim. To predict the fate of alpine interactions involving specialized species, using a monophagous beetle and its host-plant as a case study. Location. The Alps. Methods. We investigated genetic structuring of the herbivorous beetle Oreina gloriosa and its specific host-plant Peucedanum ostruthium. We used genome fingerprinting (in the insect and the plant) and sequence data (in the insect) to compare the distribution of the main gene pools in the two associated species and to estimate divergence time in the insect, a proxy for the temporal origin of the interaction. We quantified the similarity in spatial genetic structures by performing a Procrustes analysis, a tool from the shape theory. Finally, we simulated recolonization of an empty space analogous to the deglaciated Alps just after ice retreat by two lineages from two species showing unbalanced dependence, to examine how timing of the recolonization process, as well as dispersal capacities of associated species, could explain the observed pattern. Results. Contrasting with expectations based on their asymmetrical dependence, patterns in the beetle and plant were congruent at a large scale. Exceptions occurred at a regional scale in areas of admixture, matching known suture zones in Alpine plants. Simulations using a lattice-based model suggested these empirical patterns arose during or soon after recolonization, long after the estimated origin of the interaction c. 0.5 million years ago. Main conclusions. Species-specific interactions are scarce in alpine habitats because glacial cycles have limited opportunities for coevolution. Their fate, however, remains uncertain under climate change. Here we show that whereas most dispersal routes are paralleled at large scale, regional incongruence implies that the destinies of the species might differ under changing climate. This may be a consequence of the host-dependence of the beetle that locally limits the establishment of dispersing insects.

A surgeon facing the problem of a child with subglottic stenosis currently has a wide range of surgical options. Cricotracheal resection is the preferred option for grade IV and severe grade III stenoses that are clear of the vocal cords. Laryngotracheal reconstruction as a less extensive procedure is preferred for some grade II and less severe grade III stenoses. Stenosis close to the vocal cords remains a challenge and can be treated by extended partial cricotracheal resection. Pediatric surgeons and otolaryngologists should learn carefully the technique of partial cricotracheal resection for use in infants and children to achieve better results than with laryngotracheal reconstructions.

We present a model that allows for the derivation of the experimentally accesible observables: spatial steps, mean velocity, stall force, useful power, efficiency and randomness, etc. as a function of the [adenosine triphosphate] concentration and an external load F. The model presents a minimum of adjustable parameters and the theoretical predictions compare well with the available experimental results.

Stress-strain trajectories associated with pseudoelastic behavior of a Cu¿19.4 Zn¿13.1 Al (at.%) single crystal at room temperature have been determined experimentally. For a constant cross-head speed the trajectories and the associated hysteresis behavior are perfectly reproducible; the trajectories exhibit memory properties, dependent only on the values of return points, where transformation direction is reverted. An adapted version of the Preisach model for hysteresis has been implemented to predict the observed trajectories, using a set of experimental first¿order reversal curves as input data. Explicit formulas have been derived giving all trajectories in terms of this data set, with no adjustable parameters. Comparison between experimental and calculated trajectories shows a much better agreement for descending than for ascending paths, an indication of a dissymmetry between the dissipation mechanisms operative in forward and reverse directions of martensitic transformation.

We present calculations for the static structure and ordering properties of two lithium-based s-p bonded liquid alloys, Li-Na and Li-Mg. Our theoretical approach is based on the neutral pseudoatom method to derive the interatomic pair potentials, and on the modified-hypernetted-chain theory of liquids to obtain the liquid static structure, leading to a whole combination that is free of adjustable parameters. The study is complemented by performing molecular dynamics simulations which, besides checking the theoretical static structural results, also allow a calculation of some dynamical properties. The obtained results are compared with the available experimental data.

PURPOSE: We report our clinical experience with anterior pelvic osteotomy in 16 patients who underwent surgery for bladder exstrophy. The technique and its difficulties are discussed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anterior pelvic osteotomy of the superior ramus of the public bone is a simple and efficient method to facilitate symphyseal approximation and abdominal wall closure without or with low tension on the suture lines in neonates who undergo surgery for bladder exstrophy. Older children in whom surgery has been delayed can also benefit from this method. Compared to other methods of osteotomy in exstrophy surgery it does not require additional incisions, nor does the patient need to be repositioned on the operating table. A successful operation does not depend on any particular orthopedic skills and it can easily be done by the pediatric urologist. RESULTS: Immediate postoperative results regarding abdominal wall closure were excellent in all 16 patients. However, major postoperative complications developed in 2 patients. Despite antibiotic prophylaxis a severe soft tissue infection developed in 1 child, resulting in complete bladder dehiscence. In another patient an obturator nerve injury resulted in transient palsy, which resolved completely. While the first complication was not related to osteotomy, the second was osteotomy related. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral superior ramotomy of the pubic bones is a new alternative, easily performed technique to optimize bladder exstrophy surgery in children.

This review paper deals with the geology of the NW Indian Himalaya situated in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Garhwal. The models and mechanisms discussed, concerning the tectonic and metamorphic history of the Himalayan range, are based on a new compilation of a geological map and cross sections, as well as on paleomagnetic, stratigraphic, petrologic, structural, metamorphic, thermobarometric and radiometric data. The protolith of the Himalayan range, the North Indian flexural passive margin of the Neo-Tethys ocean, consists of a Lower Proterozoic basement, intruded by 1.8-1.9 Ga bimodal magmatites, overlain by a horizontally stratified sequence of Upper Proterozoic to Paleocene sediments, intruded by 470-500 Ma old Ordovician mainly peraluminous s-type granites, Carboniferous tholeiitic to alkaline basalts and intruded and overlain by Permian tholeiitic continental flood basalts. No elements of the Archaen crystalline basement of the South Indian shield have been identified in the Himalayan range. Deformation of the Himalayan accretionary wedge resulted from the continental collision of India and Asia beginning some 65-55 Ma ago, after the NE-directed underthrusting of the Neo-Tethys oceanic crust below Asia and the formation of the Andean-type 103-50 (-41) Ma old Ladakh batholith to the north of the Indus Suture. Cylindrical in geometry, the Himalayan range consists, from NE to SW, from older to younger tectonic elements, of the following zones: 1) The 25 km wide Ladakh batholith and the Asian mantle wedge form the backstop of the growing Himalayan accretionary wedge. 2) The Indus Suture zone is composed of obducted slices of the oceanic crust, island arcs, like the Dras arc, overlain by Late Cretaceous fore arc basin sediments and the mainly Paleocene to Early Eocene and Miocene epi-sutural intra-continental Indus molasse. 3) The Late Paleocene to Eocene North Himalayan nappe stack, up to 40 km thick prior to erosion, consists of Upper Proterozoic to Paleocene rocks, with the eclogitic and coesite bearing Tso Morari gneiss nappe at its base. It includes a branch of the Central Himalayan detachment, the 22-18 Ma old Zanskar Shear zone that is intruded and dated by the 22 Ma Gumburanjun leucogranite; it reactivates the frontal thrusts of the SW-verging North Himalayan nappes. 4) The late Eocene-Miocene SW-directed High Himalayan or ``Crystalline'' nappe comprises Upper Proterozoic to Mesozoic sediments and Ordovician granites, identical to those of the North Himalayan nappes. The Main Central thrust at its base was created in a zone of Eocene to Early Oligocene anatexis by ductile detachment of the subducted Indian crust, below the pre-existing 25-35 km thick NE-directed Shikar Beh and SW-directed North Himalayan nappe stacks. 5) The late Miocene Lesser Himalayan thrust with the Main Boundary Thrust at its base consists of early Proterozoic to Cambrian rocks intruded by 1.8-1.9 Ga bimodal magmatites. The Subhimalaya is a thrust wedge of Himalayan fore deep basin sediments, composed of the Early Eocene marine Subathu marls and sandstones as well as the up to 8'000 m-thick Miocene to recent Ganga molasse, a coarsening upwards sequence of shales, sandstones and conglomerates. The active frontal thrust is covered by the sediments of the Indus-Ganga plains.

The Petrova and Trgovska Gora Mts. (Gora=Mountain) are Variscan basement units incorporated into the northwestern Dinarides during the Alpine orogeny. They host numerous siderite-quartz-polysulphide, siderite-chalcopyrite, siderite-galena and barite veins, as well as stratabound hydrothermal-replacement ankerite bodies within carbonates in non-metamorphosed, flysch-like Permo-Carboniferous sequences. The deposits have been mined for Cu, Pb, Ag and Fe ores since Medieval times. Fluid inclusion studies of quartz from siderite-polysulphide-quartz and barite veins of both regions have shown the presence of primary aqueous NaCl-CaCl(2)+/- MgCl(2)-H(2)O +/- CO(2) inclusions. The quartz-sulphide stage of both regions show variable salinities; 2.7-26.2 wt% NaCl eq. for the Trgovska Gora region and 3.4-23.4 wt% NaCl eq. for the Petrova gora region, and similar homogenisation temperatures (100-230A degrees C). Finally, barite is precipitated from low salinity-low temperature solutions (3.7-15.8 wt % NaCl equ. and 115-145A degrees C). P-t conditions estimated via isochore construction yield formation temperatures between 180-250A degrees C for the quartz-sulphide stage and 160-180A degrees C for the barite stage, using a maximum lithostatic pressure of 1 kbar (cc. 3 km of overburden). The sulphur isotope composition of barite from both deposits indicates the involvement of Permian seawater in ore fluids. This is supported by the elevated bromium content of the fluid inclusion leachates (120-660 ppm in quartz, 420-960 ppm in barite) with respect to the seawater, indicating evaporated seawater as the major portion of the ore-forming fluids. Variable sulphur isotope compositions of galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite, between -3.2 and +2.7aEuro degrees, are interpreted as a product of incomplete thermal reduction of the Permian marine sulphate mixed with organically- and pyrite-bound sulphur from the host sedimentary rocks. Ore-forming fluids are interpreted as deep-circulating fluids derived primarily from evaporated Permian seawater and later modified by interaction with the Variscan basement rocks. (40)Ar/(39)Ar data of the detrital mica from the host rocks yielded the Variscan age overprinted by an Early Permian tectonothermal event dated at 266-274 Ma. These ages are interpreted as those reflecting hydrothermal activity correlated with an incipient intracontinental rifting in the Tethyan domain. Nevertheless, 75 Ma recorded at a fine-grained sericite sample from the alteration zone is interpreted as a result of later resetting of white mica during Campanian opening/closure of the Sava back arc in the neighbouring Sava suture zone (Ustaszewski et al. 2008).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of an anatomic open stabilization procedure. Twenty-three consecutive patients with traumatic, recurrent, anterior glenohumeral instability were managed with a modified open procedure. All had a Bankart lesion. A standardized, true anatomic capsulolabral reconstruction was performed with suture anchors. Two patients were lost to follow-up, and twenty-one were evaluated after 36 months [range, 24-49 months] by an independent observer. Shoulder stability and function were the principal outcome measures. None of the patients had subsequent dislocations. All returned to full working capacity, and 19 reached their previous level of sport activities. The mean loss in active abduction and flexion was 1 degrees, in internal rotation, one vertebral level, and in external rotation, 7 degrees (arm at 90 degrees of abduction). Two patients had a positive anterior apprehension test. No sign of shoulder osteoarthritis was observed. The open anatomic capsulolabral reconstruction provides excellent results and allows the restoration of stability with good function.

We explore the timing of deformation and exhumation of the Siviez-Mischabel Nappe (western Swiss Alps), which has been considered a classic example of a midcrustal crystalline nappe since the studies of Argand [1916]. This study presents Ar-40/Ar-39 ages obtained on both synkinematic white mica from Permo-Triassic cover sediments and more complex white mica populations from basement gneisses of the Siviez-Mischabel and middle Pennine Nappes. Primary foliation developed in cover units by nucleation, growth, and rigid rotation of mica grains during noncoaxial Alpine deformation. Although some samples show a crenulation of this primary foliation, mica growth appears to have occurred only during the development of primary foliation, the main phase of greenschist facies deformation related to imbrication of the Siviez-Mischabel Nappe and other middle Pennine Nappes. Good agreement exists between independent estimates of the timing of deformation and reported Ar-40/Ar-39, white mica ages from cover units of the central and southern Siviez-Mischabel Nappe. In cover units from the central and southern Siviez-Mischabel regions of the study area, Ar-40/Ar-39 ages appear to date synkinematic white mica growth. Results suggest that the Siviez-Mischabel :Nappe was emplaced and developed foliation during a 5 m.y. period from 41 to 36 Ma. In cover units from the eastern Siviez-Mischabel, however, Ar-40/Ar-39 white mica ages appear to date postkinematic thermal events. These thermal events may be related to Oligocene magmatic activity in the lower Pennine Nappes or to Miocene development of the Simplon fault zone. Variations in the relation between Alpine age and grain size for cover samples from the central, eastern, and southern Siviez-Mischabel correlate well with the regional variations in temperature inferred from quartz microfabrics and the pattern of regional metamorphism. When considered in concert with other recent isotopic studies on the timing of major tectonic and thermal events in the western Swiss Alps, these data support arguments that the relative timing of events such as thrusting and back thrusting of crystalline nappes in hinterland units and exhumation of high-pressure units in the suture zone of the western Alps are intimately related and synchronous on the scale of a few million years. Abstract: The Altaids consist in a huge accretionary-type belt extending from Siberia through Mon-golia, northern China, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. They were formed from the Vendian through the Jurassic by the accretion of numerous displaced and exotic terranes (e.g. island arc, ribbon microcontinent, seamount, basaltic plateau, back-arc basin). The number, nature and origin of the terranes differ according to the palaeotectonic models of the different authors. Thanks to a geo- dynamic study (i.e. definition of tectonic settings and elaboration of geodynamic scenarios) and plate tectonics modelling, this work aims to present an alternative model explaining the Palaeozoic palaeotectonic evolution of the Altaids. Based on a large set of compiled geological data related to palaeogeography and geodyna¬mic (e.g. sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeobiogeography, palaeomagnetism, magmatism, me- tamorphism, tectonic...), a partly new classification of the terranes and sutures implicated in the formation of the Altaids is proposed. In the aim to elaborate plate tectonics reconstructions, it is necessary to fragment the present arrangement of continents into consistent geological units. To avoid confusion with existing terminology (e.g. tectonic units, tectono-stratigraphic units, micro- continents, terranes, blocks...), the new concept of "Geodynamic Units (GDU)" was introduced. A terrane may be formed by a set of GDUs. It consists of a continental and/or oceanic fragment which has its own kinematic and geodynamic evolution for a given period. With the same ap-proach, the life span and type of the disappeared oceans is inferred thanks to the study of the mate-rial contained in suture zones. The interpretation of the tectonic settings within the GDUs comple-ted by the restoration of oceans leads to the elaboration of geodynamic scenarios. Since the Wilson cycle was presented in 1967, numerous works demonstrated that the continental growth is more complex and results from diverse geodynamic scenarios. The identification of these scenarios and their exploitation enable to elaborate plate tectonics models. The models are self-constraining (i.e. space and time constraints) and contest or confirm in turn the geodynamic scenarios which were initially proposed. The Altaids can be divided into three domains: (1) the Peri-Siberian, (2) the Kazakhstan, and (3) the Tarim-North China domains. The Peri-Siberian Domain consists of displaced (i.e. Sayan Terrane Tuva-Mongolian, Lake-Khamsara Terrane) and exotic terranes (i.e. Altai-Mongolian and Khangai-Argunsky Terrane) accreted to Siberia from the Vendian through the Ordovician. Fol-lowing the accretion of these terranes, the newly formed Siberia active margin remained active un-til its part collision with the Kazakhstan Superterrane in the Carboniferous. The eastern part of the active margin (i.e. East Mongolia) continued to act until the Permian when the North-China Tarim Superterrane collided with it. The geodynamic evolution of the eastern part of the Peri-Siberian Domain (i.e. Eastern Mongolia and Siberia) is complicated by the opening of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean in the Silurian. The Kazakhstan Domain is composed of several continental terranes of East Gondwana origin amalgamated together during the Ordovician-Silurian time. After these different orogenic events, the Kazakhstan Superterrane evolved as a single superterrane until its collision with a Tarim-North China related-terrane (i.e. Tianshan-Hanshan Terrane) and Siberian Continent during the Devonian. This new organisation of the continents imply a continued active margin from Siberia, to North China through the Kazakhstan Superterrane and the closure of the Junggar- Balkash Ocean which implied the oroclinal bending of the Kazakhstan Superterrane during the entire Carboniferous. The formation history of the Tarim-North China Domain is less complex. The Cambrian northern passive margin became active in the Ordovician. In the Silurian, the South Tianshan back-arc Ocean was open and led to the formation of the Tianshan-Hanshan Terrane which collided with the Kazakhstan Superterrane during the Devonian. The collision between Siberia and the eastern part of the Tarim-North China continents (i.e. Inner Mongolia), implied by the closure of the Solonker Ocean, took place in the Permian. Since this time, the major part of the Altaids was formed, the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean only was still open and closed during the Jurassic.
