Accumulation rates of Mg, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, opal, and calcium carbonate have been calculated from their concentrations in samples from equatorial Deep Sea Drilling Project sites. Maps of element accumulation rates and of Q-mode factors derived from raw data indicate that the flux of trace metals to equatorial Pacific sediments has varied markedly through time and space in response to changes in the relative and absolute influence of several depositional influences: biogenic, detrital, authigenic, and hydrothermal sedimentation. Biologically derived material dominates the sediment of the equatorial Pacific. The distributions of Cu and Zn are most influenced by surface-water biological activity, but Ni, Al, Fe, and Mn are also incorporated into biological material. All of these elements have equatorial accumulation maxima similar to those of opal and calcium carbonate at times during the past 50 m.y. Detritus distributed by trade winds and equatorial surface circulation contributes Al, non-biogenic Si, Fe, and Mg to the region. Detrital sediment is most important in areas with a small supply of biogenic debris and low bulk-accumulation rates. Al accumulation generally increases toward the north and east, indicating its continental source and distribution by the northeast trade winds. Maxima in biological productivity during middle Eocene and latest Miocene to early Pliocene time and concomitant well-developed surface circulation contributed toward temporal maxima in the accumulation rates of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Al in sediments of those ages. Authigenic material is also important only where bulk-sediment accumulation rates are low. Ni, Cu, Zn, and sometimes Mn are associated with this sediment. Fe is almost entirely of hydrothermal origin. Mn is primarily hydrothermal, but some is probably scavenged from sea water by amorphous iron hydroxide floes along with other elements concentrated in hydrothermal sediments, Ni, Cu, and Zn. During the past 50 m.y. all of these elements accumulated over the East Pacific Rise at rates nearly an order of magnitude higher than those at non-rise-crest sites. In addition, factor analysis indicates that some of this material is carried substantial distances to the west of the rise crest. Accumulation rates of Fe in basal metalliferous sediments indicate that the hydrothermal activity that supplied amorphous Fe oxides to the East Pacific Rise areas was most intense during middle Eocene and late Miocene to early Pliocene time.

High-resolution analyses of sediments at equatorial Atlantic Sites 662, 663, and 664 define the accumulation rates of biogenically produced CaC03 and opal and of eolian dust from North Africa over the last 3.7 m.y. The mean flux of opal increased abruptly by 60%-70% near 2.5 Ma (2.65 to 2.3 Ma), reflecting pulses of increased opal productivity along the equator due mainly to increased upwelling. The mean winter-plume dust influx from Sahelian and Saharan Africa also increased at this time by between 35% and 75%, following smaller increases earlier in the late Pliocene. The increased opal flux implies a stronger zonal component of the southern trade winds in Southern Hemisphere winter. Consistent with this wind configuration, the stronger dust flux suggests a weaker southwesterly monsoonal flow into Africa in Northern Hemisphere summer, thus increasing Sahelian aridity and winter-plume dust fluxes. Dust fluxes to the equator may possibly have also been enhanced by stronger Northern Hemisphere winter trade winds and a more southerly position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over Africa. These late Pliocene biogenic and terrigenous flux changes coincided with the appearance of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, implying an ultimate causal link. The immediate control on changes in tropical circulation may, however, have been changes in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. A steady background trend of increasing winter-plume dust flux occurred from the late Pliocene until the middle Pleistocene. This may reflect a progressive, tectonically induced aridification of northern and eastern Africa because of the gradual uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.

The carbon (C) sink strength of arctic tundra is under pressure from increasing populations of arctic breeding geese. In this study we examined how CO2 and CH4 fluxes, plant biomass and soil C responded to the removal of vertebrate herbivores in a high arctic wet moss meadow that has been intensively used by barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) for ca. 20 years. We used 4 and 9 years old grazing exclosures to investigate the potential for recovery of ecosystem function during the growing season (July 2007). The results show greater above- and below-ground vascular plant biomass within the grazing exclosures with graminoid biomass being most responsive to the removal of herbivory whilst moss biomass remained unchanged. The changes in biomass switched the system from net emission to net uptake of CO2 (0.47 and -0.77 µmol/m**2/s in grazed and exclosure plots, respectively) during the growing season and doubled the C storage in live biomass. In contrast, the treatment had no impact on the CH4 fluxes, the total litter C pool or the soil C concentration. The rapid recovery of the above ground biomass and CO2 fluxes demonstrates the plasticity of this high arctic ecosystem in terms of response to changing herbivore pressure.

The amount of lead annually transferred from oceanic crust to metalliferous sediments was estimated in order to test the hypothesis that a non-magmatic flux of lead causes the Pb surplus in the continental crust. A Pb surplus has been inferred from global crust-mantle lead mass balances derived from lead concentration correlations with other trace elements and from lead isotope systematics in oceanic basalts. DSDP/ODP data on the amount of metalliferous sediments in the Pacific Ocean and along a South Atlantic traverse are used to calculate the mean worldwide thickness of 3 (+/-1) m for purely metalliferous sediment componens. Lead isotope ratios of 39 metalliferous sediments from the Pacific define mixing lines between continent-derived (seawater) and mantle-derived (basaltic) lead, with the most metal-rich sediments usually having the most mantle-like Pb isotope composition. We used this isotope correlation and the Pb content of the 39 metalliferous sediments to derive an estimate of 130 (+/-70) µg/g for the concentration of mantle-derived lead in the purely metalliferous end-member. Mass balance calculations show that at least 12 (+/-8)% of the lead, annually transferred from upper mantle to oceanic crust at the ocean ridges, is leached out by hydrothermal processes and re-deposited in marine sediments. If all of the metalliferous lead is ultimately transferred to the continental crust during subduction, the annual flux of this lead from mantle to continental crust is 2.6 (+/-2.0) * 10**6 kg. Assuming this transfer rate to be proportional to the rate of oceanic plate production, one can fit the lead transfer to models of plate production rate variations through time. Integrating over 4 Ga, hydrothermal lead transfer to the continental crust accounts for a significant portion of the Pb surplus in the continental crust. It therefore appears to be one of the main reasons for the anomalous behavior of lead in the global crust-mantle system.

A planktonic foraminiferal fauna of probable late Aptian age is recorded in Cores 113-693A-47R and -48R, located on the Antarctic continental margin. Moderate to highly productive surface waters and upper bathyal paleodepths are inferred from benthic and planktonic foraminifers, and other biotic and mineral components in the >63 µm size fraction.

The number of cysts of marine planktic infusoria was determined in oligotrophic waters of the central Indian Ocean and productive waters of the Southeast Pacific. Cyst biomass at stations studied varied from 1.2 to 23.4 ?g/l, which was 9.9-115.8% of free infusoria biomass in the 0-15 m layer in the Indian Ocean and 0.3-19.3% in the Southeast Pacific.
