PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite material with improved properties as positive electrode was prepared by a new synthesis method. In a first step, LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 mixed oxide in the form of a fine powder was dispersed in aniline and this suspension was sprayed on the surface of an aqueous solution of HCl and ammonium peroxodisulfate. The resulting PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite is spontaneously formed by polymerization of the aniline molecules present in the drops together with small particles of the oxide. This method induces the formation of nanocomposites showing a better distribution of the oxide particles in the polymer matrix than that observed in related PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 microcomposites prepared under ultrasound irradiation to disperse the oxide particles during PANI polymerization. Measurements of electrical conductivity and zeta potential, as well as structural characterization of PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposites, reveal the existence of relatively strong interactions between the conducting polymer and the oxide particles. This feature determines higher values of the electrical conductivity (0.5 S cm(-1)) and of the average operative voltage (3.6 V), as well as of other technological parameters of the nanocomposite when it is used as the positive electrode of rechargeable lithium batteries, in comparison to those of the related microcomposite materials already reported.

The 5-aminosalicylic acid is usually prepared: 1. by the reduction of the azodye from diazotized aniline and salicylic acid and the posterior reduction of the formed compound; 2. for carboxylation with carbon dioxide under high pressure of p-aminophenol. Both do not present high yield, but the carboxylation process of p-aminophenol can easily be used and can reduce the obtainment process of 3 steps to only 2. Another advantage of this process is the fact that the product is produced without contaminants, because only one solid reagent (p-aminophenol) and the agent of carboxylation (CO2) is used.

The thermal behavior of blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, and poly(o-methoxyaniline) doped with toluene sulfonic acid was studied by thermogravimetic analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blends with thermal and electrical conductivity stabler than the conductive polymer alone were obtained. Nevertheless, degradation occurs after a long period of time (500 h) at high temperatures. The possible association of the conductivity decay with dopant loss, degradation and structural and morphological changes of the blend is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Composites produced during the in situ chemical polymerization of aniline on top of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film, in different conditions, were studied by open-circuit potential (Voc), ultraviolet-visible, and infrared spectroscopy, electrical conductivity measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The polymerization monitoring by Voc showed a maximum associated with the intermediate pernigraniline oxidation state and a final formation of polyaniline (PANI) in the doped emeraldine salt (ES) form. Furthermore, high electrical conductivity values were obtained for the PANI-ES coating prepared under selected conditions. A globular formation was observed for the doped PANI-ES coating with globules of sizes of the same order and same shape of the PET, demonstrating the influence of the substrate on the coating morphology.

(Chemical Equation Presented) The reaction between the benzohydroxamate anion (BHO-) and bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) has been examined kinetically, and the products were characterized by mass and NMR spectroscopy. The nucleophilic attack of BHO- follows two reaction paths: (i) at phosphorus, giving an unstable intermediate that undergoes a Lossen rearrangement to phenyl isocyanate, aniline, diphenylurea, and O-phenylcarbamyl benzohydroxamate; and (ii) on the aromatic carbon, giving an intermediate that was detected but slowly decomposes to aniline and 2,4-dinitrophenol. Thus, the benzohydroxamate anion can be considered a self-destructive molecular scissor since it reacts and loses its nucleophilic ability. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were extracted by acid hydrolysis from cotton microfibrils and nanocomposites with polyaniline doped with dodecyl benzenesulphonic acid (PANI-DBSA) were obtained by in situ polymerization of aniline onto CNF. The ratios between DBSA to aniline and aniline to oxidant were varied in situ and the nanocomposites characterized by four probe DC electrical conductivity, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis - NIR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FTIR and UV-Vis/NIR characterization confirmed the polymerization of PANI onto CNF surfaces. Electrical conductivity of about 10 -1 S/cm was achieved for the composites; conductivity was mostly independent of DBSA/aniline (between 2 and 4) and aniline/oxidant (between 1 and 5) molar ratios. X-ray patterns of the samples showed crystalline peaks characteristic of cellulose I for CNF samples, and a mixture of both characteristic peaks of PANI and CNF for the nanocomposites. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) characterization corroborated the abovementioned results showing that PANI coated the surface of the nanofibrils. Amino acids are well known to be an important class of compounds for the maintenance of body homeostasis and their deficit, even for the polar neuroactive aminoacids, can be controlled by supplementation. However, for the amino acid taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) this is not true. Due its special physicochemical properties, taurine is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. In addition of injured taurine transport systems under pathological conditions, CNS supplementation of taurine is almost null. Taurine is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory semi-essential amino acid extensively involved in neurological activities, acting as neurotrophic factor, binding to GABA A/glycine receptors and blocking the excitotoxicity glutamate-induced pathway leading to be a neuroprotective effect and neuromodulation. Taurine deficits have been implicated in several CNS diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy and in the damage of retinal neurons. This review describes the CNS physiological functions of taurine and the development of new derivatives based on its structure useful in CNS disease treatment.&; 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Molecules containing the guanidinic nuclei possess several pharmacological applications, and knowing the preferred isomers of a potential drug is important to understand the way it operates pharmacologically. Benzoylguanidines were synthesized in satisfactory to good yields and characterized by NMR, Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and Fourrier Transform InfraRed Spectroscopy techniques (FTIR). E/Z isomerism of the guanidines was studied and confirmed by NMR analysis in solution (1H-13C Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (HSQC) and Heteronuclear Multiple-Bond Correlation (HMBC), 1H-15N HMBC, 1H- 1H Correlation Spectroscopy (COSY) and Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments) at low temperatures. Compounds with p-Cl and p-Br aniline moiety exist mainly as Z isomer with a small proportion of E isomer, whereas compounds with p-NO2 moiety showed a decrease in proportion of isomer Z. The results are important for the application of these molecules as enzymatic inhibitors. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This work describes the mutagenic response of Sudan III, an adulterant food dye, using Salmonella typhimurium assay and the generation of hazardous aromatic amines after different oxidation methods of this azo dye. For that, we used metabolic activation by S9, catalytic oxidation by ironporphyrin and electrochemistry oxidation in order to simulate endogenous oxidation conditions. The oxidation reactions promoted discoloration from 65% to 95% of Sudan III at 1×10-4molL-1 and generation of 7.6×10-7molL-1 to 0.31×10-4molL-1 of aniline, o-anisidine, 2-methoxi-5-methylaniline, 4-aminobiphenyl, 4,4'-oxydianiline; 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and 2,6-dimethylaniline. The results were confirmed by LC-MS-MS experiments. We also correlate the mutagenic effects of Sudan III using S. typhimurium with the strain TA1535 in the presence of exogenous metabolic activation (S9) with the metabolization products of this compound. Our findings clearly indicate that aromatic amines are formed due to oxidative reactions that can be promoted by hepatic cells, after the ingestion of Sudan III. Considering that, the use of azo compounds as food dyestuffs should be carefully controlled. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
