The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X = Cl-, Br, ClO4-,) by silica gel chemically modified with thiazolidine-2-thione were studied in acetone (ac) and ethanol (eth) solutions at 25 degrees C. The following equilibrium constants (in 1 mol(-1)) were determined: a) CuCl2, 1.9 x 10(3) (ac), 1.6 x 10(3) (eth); b) CuBr2, 1.7 x 10(3) (ac), 1.2 x 10(3) (eth); c) Cu(ClO4)(2), 1.1 x 10(3) (ac), 1.0 x 10(3) (eth). The electron spin resonance spectra of the surface complexes indicate a tetragonal distorted structure in the case of lower degrees of metal loading on the chemically modified surface. The d-d electronic transition spectra show that for the ClO4- complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading, and for Cl- and Br complexes, the peak maxima shift to higher energy with lower metal loading.

The isotherms of adsorption of MX2 (M = Cu2+, Co2+; X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4) by silica gel chemically modified with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (SiATR) were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. The 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole molecule, covalently bound to the silica gel surface, adsorbs MX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and electron spin resonance spectral parameters indicated that the Cu2+ complexes have distorted tetragonal symmetry. The CoX2 (X = Cl-, Br-) analogues exhibit a distorted-tetrahedral geometry, whilstthe (SiATR)mCo)ClO4)(2) complex has a tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry, with four equatorial nitrogen atoms around the cobalt.

Moisture equilibrium data of persimmon pulp powders with 50% maltodextrin (dry basis) obtained with different drying methods were determined at 20, 30, 40 and 50 degrees C. The spray-dryer gave a dry product with a higher adsorption capacity than the other methods. The vacuum- and freeze-dried products had the same adsorption capacity. The highest isosteric heat of sorption was observed for powders produced by spray-drying. The isokinetic temperature (T(B)) calculated for persimmon pulp powder obtained by vacuum-, spray- and freeze-drying were 541.4 K, 616.3 K, 513.2 K, respectively. The sorption process was spontaneous and enthalpy controlled.

The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, ClO- 4) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-aminothiazole were studied in acetone and EtOH solutions, at 25°C. The 2-aminothiazole molecule, covalently bond to the silica gel surface, adsorbs CuX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and E.S.R. spectral parameters indicate that the Cu2+ complexes have a distorted tetragonal symmetry. The d-d eletronic transition spectra show that for ClO- 4 complex, the peak of absorption do not change for any degree of metal loading whilst for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shift to higher energy with lower metal loading. © Elsevier Science Ltd.

Biocompatible inorganic nano- and microcarriers can be suitable candidates for protein delivery. This study demonstrates facile methods of functionalization by using nanoscale linker molecules to change the protein adsorption capacity of hydroxyapatite (HA) powder. The adsorption capacity of bovine serum albumin as a model protein has been studied with respect to the surface modifications. The selected linker molecules (lysine, arginine, and phosphoserine) can influence the adsorption capacity by changing the electrostatic nature of the HA surface. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of linker-molecule interactions with the HA surface have been performed by using NMR spectroscopy, zeta-potential measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. Additionally, correlations to theoretical isotherm models have been calculated with respect to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Lysine and arginine increased the protein adsorption, whereas phosphoserine reduced the protein adsorption. The results show that the adsorption capacity can be controlled with different functionalization, depending on the protein-carrier selections under consideration. The scientific knowledge acquired from this study can be applied in various biotechnological applications that involve biomolecule-inorganic material interfaces.

Several types of alumina were synthesized from sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) by precipitation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and subsequently calcination at 500 degrees C to obtain gamma-Al2O3. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap. The various gamma-Al2O3 synthesized were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), adsorption-desorption of N-2 (S-BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al2O3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis (pH, aging time and temperature) strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. A high-surface-area alumina (371 m(2) g(-1)) was synthesized under mild conditions, from inexpensive raw materials. These aluminas were tested for the adsorption of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution at toxic metal concentrations, and isotherms were determined. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This study is focused on the synthesis and application of glycerol-based carbon materials (GBCM200, GBCM300 and GBCM350) as adsorbents for the removal of the antibiotic compounds flumequine and tetracycline from aqueous solution. The synthesis enrolled the partial carbonization of a glycerol-sulfuric acid mixture, followed by thermal treatments under inert conditions and further thermal activation under oxidative atmosphere. The textural properties were investigated through N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and the presence of oxygenated groups was discussed based on zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data. The kinetic data revealed that the equilibrium time for flumequine adsorption was achieved within 96 h, while for tetracycline, it was reached after 120 h. Several kinetic models, i.e., pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, fractional power, Elovich and Weber–Morris models, were applied, finding that the pseudo-second order model was the most suitable for the fitting of the experimental kinetic data. The estimated surface diffusion coefficient values, Ds, of 3.88 and 5.06 10 14 m2 s 1, suggests that the pore diffusion is the rate limiting step of the adsorption process. Finally, as it is based on SSE values, Sips model well-fitted the experimental FLQ and TCN adsorption isotherm data, followed by Freundlich equation. The maximum adsorption capacities for flumequine and tetracycline was of 41.5 and 58.2 mg g 1 by GBCM350 activated carbon.

Adsorption of nitrogen, argon, methane, and carbon dioxide on activated carbon Norit R1 over a wide range of pressure (up to 50 MPa) at temperatures from 298 to 343 K (supercritical conditions) is analyzed by means of the density functional theory modified by incorporating the Bender equation of state, which describes the bulk phase properties with very high accuracy. It has allowed us to precisely describe the experimental data of carbon dioxide adsorption slightly above and below its critical temperatures. The pore size distribution (PSD) obtained with supercritical gases at ambient temperatures compares reasonably well with the PSD obtained with subcritical nitrogen at 77 K. Our approach does not require the skeletal density of activated carbon from helium adsorption measurements to calculate excess adsorption. Instead, this density is treated as a fitting parameter, and in all cases its values are found to fall into a very narrow range close to 2000 kg/m(3). It was shown that in the case of high-pressure adsorption of supercritical gases the PSD could be reliably obtained for the range of pore width between 0.6 and 3 run. All wider pores can be reliably characterized only in terms of surface area as their corresponding excess local isotherms are the same over a practical range of pressure.

The microstructure of a carbon molecular sieve membrane (CMSM) is characterized using adsorption equilibrium information. The pore size distributions of the CMSM derived from N-2 and CH4 adsorption isotherm are found to be consistent with each other and in agreement with the results of gas permeation experiments as well as the general characteristics of such molecular sieve materials. This paper presents a detailed analysis of adsorption of supercritical fluids on nonporous graphitized thermal carbon black. Two methods are employed in the analysis. One is the molecular layer structure theory (MLST), proposed recently by our group, and the other is the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation. They were applied to describe the adsorption of argon, krypton, methane, ethylene, and sulfur hexafluoride on graphitized thermal carbon black. It was found that the MLST describes all the experimental data at various temperatures well. Results from GCMC simulations describe well the data at low pressure but show some deviations at higher pressures for all the adsorbates tested. The question of negative surface excess is also discussed in this paper.

Adsorption of binary mixtures onto activated carbon Norit R1 for the system nitrogen-methane-carbon dioxide was investigated over the pressure range up to 15 MPa. A new model is proposed to describe the experimental data. It is based on the assumption that an activated carbon can be characterized by the distribution function of elements of adsorption volume (EAV) over the solid-fluid potential. This function may be evaluated from pure component isotherms using the equality of the chemical potentials in the adsorbed phase and in the bulk phase for each EAV. In the case of mixture adsorption a simple combining rule is proposed, which allows determining the adsorbed phase density and its composition in the EAV at given pressure and compositions of the bulk phase. The adsorbed concentration of each adsorbate is the integral of its density over the set of EAV. The comparison with experimental data on binary mixtures has shown that the approach works reasonably well. In the case of high-pressure binary mixture adsorption, when only total amount adsorbed was measured, the proposed model allows reliably determining partial amounts of the adsorbed components. The adsorption of p-nitrophenol in one untreated activated carbon (F100) and three treated activated carbons (H-2, H2SO4 and Urea treated F100) was carried out at undissociated and dissociated conditions. To characterize the carbon, N-2 and CO2 adsorption were used. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was used to analyze the surface of the activated carbon. The experimental isotherms are fitted via the Langmuir homogenous model and Langmuir binary model. Variation of the model parameters with the solution pH is studied. Both Q(max) and the adsorption affinity coefficient (K-1) were dependent on the PZC of the carbons and solution pH. The Effect of pH must be considered due to its combined effects on the carbon surface and on the solute molecules. Adsorption of p-nitrophenol at higher pH was found to be dependent on the concentration of the anionic form of the solute.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of various potential models in the description of vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) and adsorption of simple gases on highly graphitized thermal carbon black. It is found that some potential models proposed in the literature are not suitable for the description of VLE (saturated gas and liquid densities and the vapor pressure with temperature). Simple gases, such as neon, argon, krypton, xenon, nitrogen, and methane are studied in this paper. To describe the isotherms on graphitized thermal carbon black correctly, the surface mediation damping factor introduced in our recent publication should be used to calculate correctly the fluid–fluid interaction energy between particles close to the surface. It is found that the damping constant for the noble gases family is linearly dependent on the polarizability, suggesting that the electric field of the graphite surface has a direct induction effect on the induced dipole of these molecules. As a result of this polarization by the graphite surface, the fluid–fluid interaction energy is reduced whenever two particles are near the surface. In the case of methane, we found that the damping constant is less than that of a noble gas having the similar polarizability, while in the case of nitrogen the damping factor is much greater and this could most likely be due to the quadrupolar nature of nitrogen.
