Flame retardant polyphosphate esters: 2. Condensation polymers of bisphenol A with alkyl phosphorodichloridates: synthesis, characterization and thermal studies

Polyphosphate esters based on bisphenol A and alkyl phosphorodichloridates have been synthesized and characterized by i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy. The molecular weights were calculated from 31P n.m.r. The thermal stability of the polymers were analysed by thermogravimetry.

2,4-Lutidine-1-oxide complexes of lanthanide perchlorates

2,4-Lutidine-1-oxide (2,4-LutO) complexes of lanthanide perchlorates of the formulae Ln2(2,4-LutO)13(ClO4)6 (Ln = Pr and Nd) and Ln2(2,4-LutO)15 (ClO4)6 (Ln = La, Tb, Dy, Ho and Yb) have been prepared and characterised by chemical analysis, IR, NMR, conductance and electronic spectral data. Proton NMR data along with the IR data show that the ligand coordinates to the metal ion through the oxygen. Conductance data of the complexes in acetone and nitrobenzene indicate that the perchlorate is not coordinated to the metal ion.

Structure-Reactivity Correlations of Benzoin Alkyl Ethers. Structures of 2-Methoxy-1,2-diphenylethanone (I) and 2-Isopropoxy-1,2-diphenylethanone (II)

(II): C~THlsO2, Mr= 254.83, orthorhombic, Pca21, a=8.476 (1); b= 16.098 (3), c=10.802(3)A, V=1473.9 (5) A s, Z=4, Dm=1.161 (flotation in KI), Dx= 1.148gem -3, /~(Mo, 2=0.7107 A) =0.41 cm -~, F(000) = 544, T= 293 K, R = 0.071 for 867 significant reflections. Both (I) and (II) crystallize in a cisoid conformation for the carbonyl group and alkoxy groups. Compounds (I) and (II) are photostable on irradiation in the solid state in spite of the favourable conformation of the functional groups for intramolecular H abstraction. Absence of photoreaction of (I)and (II) in the solid state is rationalized in the light of unfavourable intramolecular geometry.

Synthetic studies in aromatic hemiterpenes of natural origin, Part 5: Synthesis of 6-acetyl-2,2-dimethyl-8-methoxychromene via benzylic oxidation route

The synthesis of 6-acetyl-2,2-dimethyl-8-methoxychromene (lc), a naturally occurring isomer of encecalin (la)h~s been described startilag from 2,2,6- trimethyl-8-methoxyclaromene (2e) which was obtained from creosol (4) in two steps involving condensation of the phenol with malic acid to the coumarin (3), followed by Grignard reaction with CHaMgI. The transformation of (2e) to the natural product (lc) was effeeted by oxidative dehydrogenation by DDQ of the 6-meth~r function to the formyl group (2f), Grignard reaction to the carbinol (2g) and finally its oxidation to the acetyl moiety (lc), the sequence of the essential steps schematically summarised as : Ar-CHs --* Ar-CHO --* Ar-CH (OH) CHs --* Ar---COCHs.

l-pGlu-(2-propyl)-l-His-l-ProNH2 attenuates 4-aminopyridine-induced epileptiform activity and sodium current: a possible action of new thyrotropin-releasing hormone analog for its anticonvulsant potential

L-PGlu-(2-proPyl)-L-His-L-ProNH(2) (NP-647) is a CNS active thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analog with potential application in various CNS disorders including seizures. In the present study, mechanism of action for protective effect of NP-647 was explored by studying role of NP-647 on epileptiform activity and sodium channels by using patch-clamp methods. Epileptiform activity was induced in subicular pyramidal neurons of hippocampal slice of rat by perfusing 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) containing Mg(+2)-free normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid (nACSF). Increase in mean firing frequency was observed after perfusion of 4-AP and zero Mg(+2) (2.10+/-0.47 Hz) as compared with nACSF (0.12+/-0.08 Hz). A significant decrease in mean firing frequency (0.61+/-0.22 Hz), mean frequency of epileptiform events (0.03+/-0.02 Hz vs. 0.22+/-0.05 Hz of 4-AP+0 Mg), and average number of action potentials in paroxysmal depolarization shift-burst (2.54+/-1.21 Hz vs. 8.16+/-0.88 Hz of 4-AP +0 Mg) was observed. A significant reduction in peak dV/dt (246+/-19 mV ms(-1) vs. 297 18 mV ms-1 of 4-AP+0 Mg) and increase (1.332+/-0.018 ms vs. 1.292+/-0.019 ms of 4-AP+0 Mg) in time required to reach maximum depolarization were observed indicating role of sodium channels. Concentration-dependent depression of sodium current was observed after exposure to dorsal root ganglion neurons to NP-647. NP-647 at different concentrations (1, 3, and 10 mu M) depressed sodium current (15+/-0.5%, 50+/-2.6%, and 75+/-0.7%, respectively). However, NP-647 did not show change in the peak sodium current in CNa18 cells. Thermal Management of Electronics Using PCM-Based Heat Sink Subjected to Cyclic Heat Load

Designing a heat sink based on a phase change material (PCM) under cyclic loading is a critical issue. For cyclic operation, it is required that the fraction of the PCM melting during the heating cycle should completely resolidify during the cooling period, so that that thermal storage unit can be operated for an unlimited number of cycles. Accordingly, studies are carried out to find the parameters influencing the behavior of a PCM under cyclic loading. A number of parameters are identified in the process, the most important ones being the duty cycle and heat transfer coefficient (h) for cooling. The required h or the required cooling period for complete resolidification for infinite cyclic operation of a conventional PCM-based heat sink is found to be very high and unrealistic with air cooling from the surface. To overcome this problem, the conventional design is modified where h and the area exposed to heat transfer can be independently controlled. With this arrangement, the enhanced area provided for cooling keeps h within realistic limits. Analytical investigation is carried out to evaluate the thermal performance of this modified PCM-based heat sink in comparison to those with conventional designs. Experiments are also performed on both the conventional and the modified PCM-based heat sinks to validate the new findings.

Bromenium-Catalysed Tandem Ring Opening/Cyclisation of Vinylcyclopropanes and Vinylcyclobutanes: A Metal-Free 3+2+1]/4+2+1] Cascade for the Synthesis of Chiral Amidines and Computational Investigation

We present a detailed study of a 3+2+1] cascade cyclisation of vinylcyclopropanes (VCP) catalysed by a bromenium species (Brd+?Xd-) generated in situ, which results in the synthesis of chiral bicyclic amidines in a tandem one-pot operation. The formation of amidines involves the ring-opening of VCPs with Br?X, followed by a Ritter-type reaction with chloramine-T and a tandem cyclisation. The reaction has been further extended to vinylcyclobutane systems and involves a 4+2+1] cascade cyclisation with the same reagents. The versatility of the methodology has been demonstrated by careful choice of VCPs and VCBs to yield bicyclo4.3.0]-, -4.3.1]- and -4.4.0]amidines in enantiomerically pure form. On the basis of the experimental observations and DFT calculations, a reasonable mechanism has been put forth to account for the formation of the products and the observed stereoselectivity. We propose the existence of a p-stabilised homoallylic carbocation at the cyclopropane carbon as the reason for high stereoselectivity. DFT studies at B3LYP/6-311+G** and M06-2X/6-31+G* levels of theory in gas-phase calculations suggest the ring-opening of VCP is initiated at the p-complex stage (between the double bond and Br?X). This can be clearly perceived from the solution-phase (acetonitrile) calculations using the polarisable continuum model (PCM) solvation model, from which the extent of the ring opening of VCP was found to be noticeably high. Studies also show that the formation of zero-bridge bicyclic amidines is favoured over other bridged bicyclic amidines. The energetics of competing reaction pathways is compared to explain the product selectivity.

New low band gap 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1H-benzod]imidazole and benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c `]bis1,2,5]thiadiazole based conjugated polymers for organic photovoltaics

Two new low band gap D-A structured conjugated polymers, PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT, based on 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1H-benzod]imidazole and benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole acceptor units with benzo1,2-b; 3,4-b']dithiophene as a donor unit have been designed and synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The incorporation of the benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole unit into PBDTBBT has significantly altered the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymer. The optical band gap estimated from the onset absorption edge is similar to 1.88 eV and similar to 1.1 eV, respectively for PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT. It is observed that PBDTBBT exhibited a deeper HOMO energy level (similar to 4.06 eV) with strong intramolecular charge transfer interactions. Bulk heterojunction solar cells fabricated with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDTBBT: PC71BM/Al exhibited a best power conversion efficiency of 0.67%, with a short circuit current density of 4.9 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 0.54 V and a fill factor of 25%.

The hydrography of Elkhorn Slough: a shallow California coastal Eebayment: Annual Report, Part 2, 1973

From October 1970 through February 1972, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, secchi depth and five major nutrients were observed at approximately monthly intervals in Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing Harbor. In addition, similar hourly observations were made during two tidal studies during the wet and dry seasons. From the salinity measurements during the summer, a salt balance for Elkhorn Slough is formulated and rnean eddy diffusion coefficients are determined. The diffusion nlodel applied to longitudinal phosphate distributions yielded a mean diffusive flux of 12 kg P04/day (140 pg-at/m^2/day) for the area above the mean tidal prism. Consistent differences, apparently due to differing regenerati on ra tes, were observed in the phosphate and nitrogen distributions. Bottom sediments are proposed as a possible source for phosphate and as a sink for fixed nitrogen. Dairy farms located along central Elkhorn Slough are apparently a source for reduced nitrogen. During summer, nitrogen was found to be the limiting nutrient for primary production in the upper slough. Tidal observations indicated fresh water of high nutrient concentration consistently entered the harbor from fresh water sources to the south. This source water had a probable phosphate concentration of 40 to 60 ug-at/l and seasonally varying P:N ratio of 1:16 and 1:5 during the winter and summer respectively. Net production and respiration rates are calculated from diurnal variations in dissolved oxygen levels observed in upper Elkhorn Slough. Changes in phosphate associated with the variations in oxygen was close to the accepted ratio of 1:276 by atoms. Document is 88 pages.

Incidental Catch of Marine Mammals by Foreign and Joint Venture Trawl Vessels in the U.S. EEZ of the North Pacific, 1973-88

During 1973-88, 3,661 marine mammals of 17 species were reported as incidental catch by U.S. fishery observers aboard foreign and joint venture trawl vessels in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. Northern sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) accounted for 90% of the reported incidental mortality in the Gulf of Alaska and eastern Bering Sea. Nearly half of these sea lions were taken in trawl nets in the Shelikof Strait, Alaska, joint venture fishery during 1982-84. However, high incidental mortality rates (>25 sea lions per 10,000 metric tons of groundfish catch) also occurred in the foreign fisheries near Kodiak Island and in the Aleutian Islands area in earlier years. Estimated annual mortality of incidentally caught northern sea lions in Alaska declined from 1,000 to 2,000 animals per year during the early 1970s and 1982 to fewer than 100 animals in 1988. In the Bering Sea most sea lions incidentally caught were males, while in the Gulf of Alaska females were more frequently caught. Females may also have been dominant in the incidental catch of sea lions in the Aleutian Islands area, but age and sex composition data are limited. Incidental mortality of adult female sea lions by foreign trawl fisheries in these areas could have partially contributed to the reported declines in northern sea lion populations in Alaska during the 1970s, but it cannot alone account for the present decline in population size.
