The electron affinities and ionization potentials of 4d and 5d transition metal atoms were studied by CCSD(T), MP2 and density functional methods. The calculated results indicate that density functional method B3LYP has the best overall performance in predicting both electron affinity and ionization potential. SVWN gives largest IP and EA for 4d and 5d atoms. For the two basis sets used in this study, LANL2DZ and SDD, the performance of B3LYP/SDD combination is better than B3LYP/LANL2DZ, in particular for electron affinity calculation.

Four new organotin complexes, namely [(Bu2Sn)(2)O(EtO)(L1)](2) (1), [(Bu2Sn)(2)O(EtO)(L2)](2) (2), [(Bu2Sn)(2)O(EtO)(L-3)](2) (3) and [Ph3Sn(L4)]center dot 0.5H(2)O (4), were obtained by reactions of Bu2SnO and Ph3SnOH with 4-phenylideneamino-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (HL1), 4-furfuralideneamino-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (HL2), 4-(2-thienylideneamino)-3-ethyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (HL3) and 4-(3,5-di-t-butylsalicylideneamino)-3-ethyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (HL4). Compounds 1-4 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Complexes 1-3 show similar structures containing a Sn4O4 ladder skeleton in which each of the exo tin atoms is bonded to the N atom of a corresponding thione-form deprotonated ligand. Complex 4 shows a mononuclear structure in which the tin atom of triphenyltin group is coordinated by the S atom of a thiol-form L4(-) anion.

Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were carried out to predict the structures and the absorption and emission spectra for porphyrin and a series of carbaporphyrins-carbaporphyrin, adj-dicarbaporphyrin, opp-dicarbaporphyrin, tricarbaporphyrin and tetracarbaporphyrin. The ground- and excited-state geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) and CIS/6-31g(d) level, respectively. The optimized ground-state geometry and absorption spectra of porphyrin, calculated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), are comparable with the available experimental values. Based on the optimized excited-state geometries obtained by CIS/6-31g(d) method, the emission properties are calculated using TDDFT method at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. The effects of the substitution of nitrogen atoms with carbon atoms at the center positions of porphyrin are discussed. The results indicate that the two-pyrrole nitrogens are important to the chemical and physical properties for porphyrin.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. The hetero atom substituted aluminophosphate molecular sieves Me-VPI-5(Me = Mgt Ti, Sn, Si) were synthesized hydrothermally. Rare earth ions are originally doped into these microporous materials by aqueous solution ion exchange procedures. The phase transitions of the microporous materials are investigated by high-temperature and high-pressure experimental techniques. The influence of the phase transitions on the rare earth ions' spectral structures is discussed, With the increase of temperature, Eu(II)Mg-VPI-5 is converted into Eu(II)Mg-AIPO(4)-8, then into tridymite phase. The pressure has a notable influence on Eu(II) ion's spectral structures. The spectral structures have changed regularly with the increase of pressure.

The analytical expressions of quasi-first and second order homogeneous catalytic reactions with different diffusion coefficients at ultramicrodisk electrodes under steady state conditions are obtained by using the reaction layer concept. The method of treatment is simple and its physical meaning is clear. The relationship between the diffusion layer, reaction layer, the electrode dimension and the kinetic rate constant at an ultramicroelectrode is discussed and the factor effect on the reaction order is described. The order of a catalytic reaction at an ultramicroelectrode under steady state conditions is related not only to C(Z)*/C(O)* but also to the kinetic rate constant and the dimension of the ultramicroelectrode; thus the order of reaction can be controlled by the dimension of the ultramicroelectrode. The steady state voltammetry of the ultramicroelectrode is one of the most simple methods available to study the kinetics of fast catalytic reactions.

The conditions for quasi-first and second order homogeneous catalytic reactions and their variation with each other at an ultramicrodisk electrode in the steady state are discussed in this paper. The order of reaction can be controlled by changing the dimension of the ultramicroelectrode: the second order reaction can be changed to quasi-first by decreasing the dimension of the ultramicroelectrode. An example of this is given. The main factor effect on the reaction order is the dimension of the ultramicroelectrode. The K4Fe(CN)6-aminopyrine system is selected to confirm the theory, the experiments showing that the system is a second order reaction at a 432 mum microelectrode, and a quasi-first order reaction at a 19 mum ultramicroelectrode. The kinetic constant of the system can be determined by applying the previous theory of homogeneous catalytic reaction.

The reaction of EuCl3, AlCl3 and C6Me6 in toluene gives the Eu(II) complex [Eu(eta-6-C6Me6)(AlCl4)2]4; X-ray crystal determination shows the molecule to be a cyclotetramer, in which the four Eu(C6Me6)AlCl4 units are connected via four groups of eta-2-AlCl4.

To evaluate the interactions between the atoms of An, Ag and Cu and clean Si(111) surface, two types of silicon clusters Si4H7 and Si16H20 together with their metal complexes were studied by using hybrid (U)B3LYP density functional theory method. Optimized geometries and energies on different adsorption sites indicate that: (1) the binding energies at different adsorption sites are large (ranging from similar to 1.2 to 2.6 eV depend on the metal atoms and adsorption sites), suggesting a strong interaction between metal atom and silicon surface; (2) the most favorable adsorption site is the on top (T) site. Mulliken population analysis indicated that in the system of on top (T) site, a covalent bond is formed between metal atom and dangling bond of surface Si atom. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Silicalite-I, ZSM-5, and Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared from two different silicon sources are characterized by UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron spin resonance (ESR), and UV/visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV/Vis DRS). A new technique for investigating zeolitic structure, UV resonance Raman spectroscopy selectively enhances the Raman bands associated with framework iron atoms incorporated into MFI-type zeolites, and it is very sensitive in identifying the iron atoms in the framework of zeolites, while other techniques such as XRD, ESR, and UV/Vis DRS have failed in uncovering trace amounts of iron atoms in the framework of zeolites.
