While bonding between d(10) atoms and ions in molecular systems has been well studied, less attention has been paid to interactions between such seemingly closed shell species in extended inorganic solids. In this contribution, we present visualizations of the electronic structures of the delafossites ABO(2) (A = Cu, Ag, Au) with particular emphasis on the nature of d(10)-d(10) interactions in the close packed plane of the coinage metal ion. We find that on going from Cu to Ag to Au, the extent of bonding between A and A increases. However, the structures (in terms of distances) of these compounds are largely determined by the strongly ionic 13,11 0 interaction and for the larger B ions Sc, In and Y, the A atoms are sufficiently well-separated that A-A bonding is almost negligible. We also analyze some interesting differences between Ag and Au, including the larger A-O covalency of the Au. The trends in electronic structure suggest that the Ag and Au compounds are not good candidate transparent conducting oxides. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. The Turkevich method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles, using sodium citrate as the reducing agent, is renowned for its ability to produce biocompatible colloids with mean size >10 nm. Here we show that monodisperse gold nanoparticles in the 5-10 nm size range can be synthesized by simply reversing the order of addition of reactants, i.e. adding chloroauric acid to citrate solution. Kinetic studies and electron microscopic characterization revealed that the reactivity of chloroauric acid, initial molar ratio of citrate to chloroauric acid (MR), and reaction mixture pH play an important role in producing monodisperse gold nanoparticles. Reversing the order of addition also enhanced the stabilization of nanoparticles at high MR values. Remarkably, the system exhibits a `memory' of the order of addition, even when the timescale of mixing is much shorter than the timescale of synthesis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Ternary Schiff base copper(II) complex [CuL(phen)](ClO4), where HL is 2-(methylthio)ethylsalicylaldimine and phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, has been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex shows a CuN3OS coordination in a square-pyramidal (4 + 1) geometry with the sulfur as an equatorial ligand. The complex is an avid binder to double-stranded DNA in the minor groove and exhibits both photonuclease and chemical nuclease activity. When exposed to UV light of 312 nm (96 W) or visible light of 532 nm (125 W) under aerobic conditions, the complex causes significant cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in the absence of any externally added reducing agent or H2O2.

The title compound, C(14)H(18)F(2)O(2)center dot 0.5H(2)O, a hemihydrate of a C(s)-symmetric unsaturated difluorodiol, crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2/m (Z = 4). The asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically independent difluorodiol half-molecules, occupying the mirror planes at (x, 0, z) and (x, 1/2, z), and half a molecule of water, lying on the twofold axis at (0, y, 0). Four difluorodiol molecules self-assemble around each solvent water molecule via O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds in a near tetrahedral symmetry to generate a cylindrical column-like architecture.

A simple and convenient tandem methodology for the enantiospecific generation of functionalised bicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes 9,14-18, via intermolecular alkylation of Michael donors with 10-bromocarvones 7, 10 and 11, followed by intramolcular Michael addition, is achieved. An unsuccessful attempt for the extension of the methodology for a possible short enantiospecific approach to AB-ring system 22 of taxanes via the allyl bromide 21, is also described.

The title compound, C(14)H(17)FO(2), was obtained from anti-4a, 9a:8a,10a-diepoxy-1,4,4a,5,8,8a, 9,9a, 10,10a-decahydroanthracene via tandem hydrogen-fluoride-mediated epoxide ring-opening and transannular oxacyclization. With the two cyclohexene rings folded towards the oxygen bridge, the title tetracyclic fluoroalcohol molecule displays a conformation reminiscent of a pagoda. The crystal packing is effected via intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, which link the molecules into a zigzag chain along the b axis.

Click chemistry has played a significant role as a rapid and versatile strategy for conjugating two molecular fragments under very mild reaction conditions. Introduction of ferrocene-derived triazole systems using click chemistry has attracted enormous interest in various fields due to its potential applications in electrochemical techniques for detection and sensing. The present discussion focuses on the synthesis of ferrocene-triazole and the importance of using a CuAAC reaction for such conjugation. Applications of ferrocene-based click reactions in conjugate chemistry, asymmetric catalysis, medicinal chemistry, host-guest interactions, and materials chemistry have been highlighted.

In this article, we report the structure of a 1:1 charge transfer complex between pyridine (PYR) and chloranil (CHL) in solution (CHCl(3)) from the measurement of hyperpolarizability (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios, D and D', respectively, by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Using linearly (electric field vector along X) and circularly polarized incident light, respectively, we have measured two macroscopic depolarization ratios D = I(X,X)(2 omega)/I(X,Z)(2 omega) and D' = I(X,C)(2 omega)/I(Z,C)(2 omega) in the laboratory fixed XYZ frame by detecting the second harmonic (SH) scattered light in a polarization resolved fashion. The stabilization energy and the optical gap calculated through the MP2/cc-pVDZ method using Gaussian09 were not significantly different to distinguish between the cofacial and T-shape structures. Only when the experimentally obtained beta(HRS) and the depolarization ratios, D and D', were matched with the theoretically computed values from single and double configuration interaction (SDCI) calculations performed using the ZINDO-SCRF technique, we concluded that the room temperature equilibrium structure of the complex is cofacial. This is in sharp contrast to an earlier theoretical prediction of the T-shape structure of the complex.

Based on a method proposed by Reddy and Shanmugasundaram, similar solutions have been obtained for the steady inviscid quasi‐one‐dimensional nonreacting flow in the supersonic nozzle of CO2–N2–H2O and CO2–N2–He gasdynamic laser systems. Instead of using the correlations of a nonsimilar function NS for pure N2 gas, as is done in previous publications, the NS correlations are computed here for the actual gas mixtures used in the gasdynamic lasers. Optimum small‐signal optical gain and the corresponding optimum values of the operating parameters like reservoir pressure and temperature and nozzle area ratio are computed using these correlations. The present results are compared with the previous results and the main differences are discussed.

Fusion of multi-sensor imaging data enables a synergetic interpretation of complementary information obtained by sensors of different spectral ranges. Multi-sensor data of diverse spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions require advanced numerical techniques for analysis and interpretation. This paper reviews ten advanced pixel based image fusion techniques – Component substitution (COS), Local mean and variance matching, Modified IHS (Intensity Hue Saturation), Fast Fourier Transformed-enhanced IHS, Laplacian Pyramid, Local regression, Smoothing filter (SF), Sparkle, SVHC and Synthetic Variable Ratio. The above techniques were tested on IKONOS data (Panchromatic band at 1 m spatial resolution and Multispectral 4 bands at 4 m spatial resolution). Evaluation of the fused results through various accuracy measures, revealed that SF and COS methods produce images closest to corresponding multi-sensor would observe at the highest resolution level (1 m).

The mononuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu(phen)(H2O)(NO3)(2)] (1), obtained by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O in methanol solution, reacts with anionic ligands SCN-, AcO-, N-3(-) and PhCO2- in MeOH solution to form the stable binuclear complexes [Cu-2(H2O)(2)(phen)(2)(mu-X)(2)](2) (NO3)(2), where X = SCN- (2), AcO- (3), N-3(-) (4) or PhCO2- (5). The molecular structure of complex 3 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These complexes were characterized by electronic, IR, ESR, magnetic moments and conductivity measurements. The electrochemical behaviour of the complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The interactions of these complexes with calf thymus DNA have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. Their DNA cleavage activity was studied on double-stranded pBR322 plasmid DNA using gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and presence of H2O2 as oxidant.
