Digging into Data 3 Progress Meeting

On Wednesday 17th June, the UK projects funded under round 3 of the Digging into Data challenge gathered together at Paddington for the mid-term progress meeting. This workshop provided projects with the opportunity to present, not just on progress to their plan, but on highlights, issues, challenges and share this information with the funders and other projects.

Report of the CFDO-SCALE-STREAM Stakeholders Meeting. Phnom Penh, 16-17 May 2002

The CFDO-SCALE-STREAM Stakeholders Meeting was held on the 16th and morning of the 17th of May 2002 in the Department of Fisheries (DOF). This was the first opportunity for a range of stakeholders to gather for presentations and discussions on the STREAM Initiative and its partnership with the Community Fisheries Development Office (CFDO) and the Cambodian NGO SCALE. Knowledge Exchange meeting on Research tools

Knowledge Exchange investigated the diversity and complexity of research tools, techniques and researchers' behaviours to identify how and where the initiative can eliminate barriers to cooperation between different parts of the whole system. Experts from the partner organisations and beyond exchanged knowledge and experiences, during our meeting on Research Tools which took place on 27 June 2012, in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Experts considered ‘the use of digital technologies in research' or ‘digital research tools' with a view to informing future Knowledge Exchange activities.

Framing digital capabilities for UK HE and FE staff: Resources and references

This list does not include the actual frameworks, specifications, standards etc reviewed for the Jisc digital capabilities programme. These are secondary resources - articles, reports, research outcomes and professional reviews - which are sometimes linked to specific frameworks. They were used to help plan the frameworks review, construct the new Jisc digital capabilities framework and to write the accompanying reports. Further down you will find a list of web sites, blog posts and professional resources which provide useful additional information and materials, not necessarily evidence-based and not always drawn on directly for this project.

Digital ‘lens’ on the UK PSF: supporting the digital capabilities of teaching staff in UK HE

This resource can also be used by professional staff who are seeking accreditation via the UK PSF for relevant aspects of their role, e.g. staff who support the use of technologies for learning and/or support the development of digital literacies.

Vietnam has a large number of poor people whose livelihoods depend in various ways on aquatic resources. More than 20 million people living along the coastline are among the most vulnerable and poorest in Vietnam and similarly poor situations occur with more than 10 million population living in mid and highland areas throughout the country. The Government of Vietnam is giving high priority to the poverty alleviation and following several successful government and donor funded projects, it is recognized that aquaculture can and should play an increasingly important role in improving the livelihoods of poor people. Female reproduction in penaeid shrimp is carefully regulated by several different endocrine factors. Their precise modes of action have not yet been fully elucidated. Three endocrine factors, each representing a different chemical class of hormones, have been investigated in the penaeid shrimp Sicyonia ingentis in our laboratory: ecdysteroids, vitellogenesis-inhibiting hormone (VIH) , and methyl farnesoate (MF). Ecdysteroids (the steroid molting hormones of arthropods; predominantly 20-hydroxyecdysone), are initially present in low levels (<10 ng/mg) in shrimp embryos. As development of the embryos nears time of hatch, the ecdysteroid levels increase to approximately 150 ng/ mg, indicating that they may be of embryonic origin and involved in embryonic development. An assay was developed for shrimp VIH, which presumably is a protein. Delay of onset of the next reproductive cycle was observed following injection of sinus gland extracts into shrimp that had previously had their eyestalks removed. A photoaffinity analog was synthesized for the putative shrimp reproductive hormone MF-a terpenoid. This analog, farnesyl diazomethyl ketone (FDK) , was used to demonstrate the presence of specific binding proteins for MF in shrimp hemolymph. (PDF file contains 136 pages.)
