This issue of the FAL Bulletin proposes a paradigm shift away from the traditional approach to transport policy in the region, so as to better address issues associated with development. It suggests working towards an integrated and sustainable infrastructure, logistics and mobility policy structure based on the principle of co- modality.

Shipping costs: a rising challenge to the region's competitive development

This issue of the FAL Bulletin examines the impact of shipping costs on the exports of five Latin American and Caribbean countries by analysing the difference between the unit value of goods at the port of origin and at the port of destination, in three of the region's main external markets.

Towards a new paradigm for urban public transport: the transmilenio case

The process of urbanization in Latin America presents new challenges for urban transport systems insofar as one of the priorities is to provide proper mobility for the increasing and complex interaction of communities.This edition of the Bulletin, prepared by Irma Chaparro, presents a summary of the recent study entitled Evaluación del impacto socio-económico del transporte urbano en la ciudad de Bogotá. El caso del sistema masivo de transporte, Transmilenio, LC/L 1786-P, October 2002, which considers the socioeconomic impact of the Transmilenio system in Bogotá. This system is part of an integrated transport strategy promoted by the District Authority over the period 1998-2001 and is an avant-garde solution to the difficult problem of transport in the city.

Rising concentration in Asia-Latin American value chains: Can small firms turn the tide?

Dynamic Asia has overtaken the European Union as Latin America and the Caribbean’s second largest export market, after the United States. However, the region’s exports to Asia remain concentrated in few commodities involving a small number of large firms. This book explores the present and future scope for the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in biregional trade and value chains and the measures that can be taken to make those chains more inclusive and sustainable. SMEs have a low direct presence in the region’s export flows and their participation in the supplier networks of multinational companies is weak. This volume reviews several supplier development programmes (SDPs) adopted in various countries in Asia and Latin America to increase SME linkages with multinational firms. These programmes, many of which are public-private initiatives, aim to boost SME productivity and enhance their participation in value chains.

This analysis sought to study the social history of women, education and practice of cyber-activism, which consists of the struggle for causes that benefit society as a manner of social engagement. Through thorough theoretical study it was possible to analyze the campaign, 10X10, and relate the importance of the practice of personal commitment to support causes of global interest. Thus, it is possible to ascertain the relevance of actions via the Internet, its reach, its effectiveness and method of operation, providing voice and force to altruistic causes
