TRAUTMAN has postulated1 that the usual space−time singularity occurring in classical cosmological models and in the gravitational collapse of massive objects could be averted if intrinsic spin effects are incorporated into general relativity by adding torsion terms to the usual Einstein field equations, that is through the Einstein−Cartan theory. Invoking a primordial magnetic field for aligning all the individual nuclear spins he shows that his universe consisting of 1080 aligned neutrons collapses to a minimum radius of the order of 1 cm with a corresponding matter density of 1055 g cm-3.

Black hole X-ray binaries, binary systems where matter from a companion star is accreted by a stellar mass black hole, thereby releasing enormous amounts of gravitational energy converted into radiation, are seen as strong X-ray sources in the sky. As a black hole can only be detected via its interaction with its surroundings, these binary systems provide important evidence for the existence of black holes. There are now at least twenty cases where the measured mass of the X-ray emitting compact object in a binary exceeds the upper limit for a neutron star, thus inferring the presence of a black hole. These binary systems serve as excellent laboratories not only to study the physics of accretion but also to test predictions of general relativity in strongly curved space time. An understanding of the accretion flow onto these, the most compact objects in our Universe, is therefore of great importance to physics. We are only now slowly beginning to understand the spectra and variability observed in these X-ray sources. During the last decade, a framework has developed that provides an interpretation of the spectral evolution as a function of changes in the physics and geometry of the accretion flow driven by a variable accretion rate. This doctoral thesis presents studies of two black hole binary systems, Cygnus~X-1 and GRS~1915+105, plus the possible black hole candidate Cygnus~X-3, and the results from an attempt to interpret their observed properties within this emerging framework. The main result presented in this thesis is an interpretation of the spectral variability in the enigmatic source Cygnus~X-3, including the nature and accretion geometry of its so-called hard spectral state. The results suggest that the compact object in this source, which has not been uniquely identified as a black hole on the basis of standard mass measurements, is most probably a massive, ~30 Msun, black hole, and thus the most massive black hole observed in a binary in our Galaxy so far. In addition, results concerning a possible observation of limit-cycle variability in the microquasar GRS~1915+105 are presented as well as evidence of `mini-hysteresis' in the extreme hard state of Cygnus X-1.

Acceleration of the universe has been established but not explained. During the past few years precise cosmological experiments have confirmed the standard big bang scenario of a flat universe undergoing an inflationary expansion in its earliest stages, where the perturbations are generated that eventually form into galaxies and other structure in matter, most of which is non-baryonic dark matter. Curiously, the universe has presently entered into another period of acceleration. Such a result is inferred from observations of extra-galactic supernovae and is independently supported by the cosmic microwave background radiation and large scale structure data. It seems there is a positive cosmological constant speeding up the universal expansion of space. Then the vacuum energy density the constant describes should be about a dozen times the present energy density in visible matter, but particle physics scales are enormously larger than that. This is the cosmological constant problem, perhaps the greatest mystery of contemporary cosmology. In this thesis we will explore alternative agents of the acceleration. Generically, such are called dark energy. If some symmetry turns off vacuum energy, its value is not a problem but one needs some dark energy. Such could be a scalar field dynamically evolving in its potential, or some other exotic constituent exhibiting negative pressure. Another option is to assume that gravity at cosmological scales is not well described by general relativity. In a modified theory of gravity one might find the expansion rate increasing in a universe filled by just dark matter and baryons. Such possibilities are taken here under investigation. The main goal is to uncover observational consequences of different models of dark energy, the emphasis being on their implications for the formation of large-scale structure of the universe. Possible properties of dark energy are investigated using phenomenological paramaterizations, but several specific models are also considered in detail. Difficulties in unifying dark matter and dark energy into a single concept are pointed out. Considerable attention is on modifications of gravity resulting in second order field equations. It is shown that in a general class of such models the viable ones represent effectively the cosmological constant, while from another class one might find interesting modifications of the standard cosmological scenario yet allowed by observations. The thesis consists of seven research papers preceded by an introductory discussion.

In the framework of the ECSK [Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble] theory of cosmology, a scalar field nonminimally coupled to the gravitational field is considered. For a Robertson-Walker open universe (k=0) in the radiation era, the field equations admit a singularity-free solution for the scale factor. In theory, the torsion is generated through nonminimal coupling of a scalar field to the gravitation field. The nonsingular nature of the cosmological model automatically solves the flatness problem. Further absence of event horizon and particle horizon explains the high degree of isotropy, especially of 2.7-K background radiation.

Hong Kong was once a British colony and has been under the sovereignty of People’s Republic of China (PRC) since 1997. However, some of the unjust practices and colonial legacies are infiltrated into the development ideology as well as the social structures. The construction of intercity express railway project announced in 2008 causing the demolishment of Tsoi Yuen Tsuen, a “non-indigenous” agricultural village in Hong Kong, was one of the current examples. Tsoi Yuen village was established under the former colonial sovereignty sixty years ago. Approximately 450 populations were affected that they had to relocate their homeland involuntarily. However, these villagers were very attached to their homelands and were unwilling to move, and meanwhile they found that they were absent in the government’s consultation and decision-making process. Soon they began their resistance and demanded for “No Move! No Demolish!”. Their movement was strongly supported by a group of “Post-80s generation” and turned into the most important social movement of the city in recent years. In fact, demolition of Tsoi Yuen Village for city development is not an isolated case in the city. Meanwhile the situation is getting worse in Mainland China. I chose the case study of Tsoi Yuen Resistance from 2008 to 2011 for revelation of the complicated colonial history and postcolonial era of Hong Kong. I focused on discussing the Tsoi Yuen Resistance and the Post-80s movement, and how they have exposed the tension between top-down urban planning and development and public movements fighting for a more democratic process in choosing their way of living. Through the study of a village movement which as well as the rationale behind the Post-80s’ support, I hoped to illustrate how this movement has awaken a different sense of living for the new generations in the midst of the high-sounding urban development. It is an opportunity to examine Hong Kong’s colonial epoch in a different perspective: through studying the Tsoi Yuen Village, let them (subalterns) speak for themselves. Furthermore, the significance of this resistance, taking place eleven years after the handover to the PRC, is an important fact that I shall not miss in later discussion. Last but not least, during the resistance, advanced technology and social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, iPhone were used by Post 80s generation to spread the latest information in order to attract public’s concern and participation. Therefore, apart from studying Tsoi Yuen Resistance as a local social movement, I also regard it as a part of the global movement in perusing ecological lifestyle and civil society. How Post 80s’ generation manipulates the global idea in a local context will also be examined.

Pressure and temperature dependence of 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) has been investigated in NaClO3 and Ba(ClO3)2·H2O. NQR frequencies are measured in the temperature range 77–300 K and up to 5 kbar pressure. The torsional frequency of the ClO3 pyramid and its variation with both pressure and temperature are evaluated from the NQR frequencies under the harmonic approximation. In general, the pressure effect on the internal motions is found to be less in Ba (ClO3)2·H2O compared to NaClO3. When the samples are cooled to 77 K the pressure coeffecient of NQR frequency becomes nearly zero in sodium chlorate, whereas it retains a value of 6 kHz kbar−1 in barium chlorate. This behaviour follows from the fact that at 77K, the torsional frequency in NaClO3 is unaffected by the application of pressure while it increases at the rate 12 cm−1 kbar−1 in Ba(ClO3)2·H2O.

A new conformal creation field cosmology is considered and it is found that a negative energy scalar field nonminimally coupled to the gravitational field gives rise to creation and, in contrast to Hoyle-Narlikar theory, no a priori assumption about the rate of creation is required to solve the field equations.

The general structure of a metric-torsion theory of gravitation allows a parity-violating contribution to the complete action which is linear in the curvature tensor and vanishes identically in the absence of torsion. The resulting action involves, apart from the constant ¯K E =8pgr/c4, a coupling (B) which governs the strength of the parity interaction mediated by torsion. In this model the Brans-Dicke scalar field generates the torsion field, even though it has zero spin. The interesting consequence of the theory is that its results for the solar-system differ very little from those obtained from Brans-Dicke (BD) theory. Therefore the theory is indistinguishable from BD theory in solar-system experiments.

Anisotropic emission of gravitational waves (GWs) from inspiralling compact binaries leads to the loss of linear momentum and hence gravitational recoil of the system. The loss rate of linear momentum in the far-zone of the source (a nonspinning binary system of black holes in quasicircular orbit) is investigated at the 2.5 post-Newtonian (PN) order and used to provide an analytical expression in harmonic coordinates for the 2.5PN accurate recoil velocity of the binary accumulated in the inspiral phase. The maximum recoil velocity of the binary system at the end of its inspiral phase (i.e at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO)) estimated by the 2.5PN formula is of the order of 4 km s(-1) which is smaller than the 2PN estimate of 22 km s(-1). Going beyond inspiral, we also provide an estimate of the more important contribution to the recoil velocity from the plunge phase. The maximum recoil velocity at the end of the plunge, involving contributions both from inspiral and plunge phase, for a binary with symmetric mass ratio nu = 0.2 is of the order of 182 km s(-1).

The ability of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to provide good time and frequency localization has made it a popular tool in time-frequency analysis of signals. Wavelets exhibit constant-Q property, which is also possessed by the basilar membrane filters in the peripheral auditory system. The basilar membrane filters or auditory filters are often modeled by a Gammatone function, which provides a good approximation to experimentally determined responses. The filterbank derived from these filters is referred to as a Gammatone filterbank. In general, wavelet analysis can be likened to a filterbank analysis and hence the interesting link between standard wavelet analysis and Gammatone filterbank. However, the Gammatone function does not exactly qualify as a wavelet because its time average is not zero. We show how bona fide wavelets can be constructed out of Gammatone functions. We analyze properties such as admissibility, time-bandwidth product, vanishing moments, which are particularly relevant in the context of wavelets. We also show how the proposed auditory wavelets are produced as the impulse response of a linear, shift-invariant system governed by a linear differential equation with constant coefficients. We propose analog circuit implementations of the proposed CWT. We also show how the Gammatone-derived wavelets can be used for singularity detection and time-frequency analysis of transient signals. A Monte Carlo filter, based on the idea of averaging over characteristics and fashioned after a particle-based time-discretized approximation to the Kushner-Stratonovich (KS) nonlinear filtering equation, is proposed. A key aspect of the new filter is the gain-like additive update, designed to approximate the innovation integral in the KS equation and implemented through an annealing-type iterative procedure, which is aimed at rendering the innovation (observation prediction mismatch) for a given time-step to a zero-mean Brownian increment corresponding to the measurement noise. This may be contrasted with the weight-based multiplicative updates in most particle filters that are known to precipitate the numerical problem of weight collapse within a finite-ensemble setting. A study to estimate the a-priori error bounds in the proposed scheme is undertaken. The numerical evidence, presently gathered from the assessed performance of the proposed and a few other competing filters on a class of nonlinear dynamic system identification and target tracking problems, is suggestive of the remarkably improved convergence and accuracy of the new filter. A new representation of spatio-temporal random processes is proposed in this work. In practical applications, such processes are used to model velocity fields, temperature distributions, response of vibrating systems, to name a few. Finding an efficient representation for any random process leads to encapsulation of information which makes it more convenient for a practical implementations, for instance, in a computational mechanics problem. For a single-parameter process such as spatial or temporal process, the eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix leads to the well-known Karhunen-Loeve (KL) decomposition. However, for multiparameter processes such as a spatio-temporal process, the covariance function itself can be defined in multiple ways. Here the process is assumed to be measured at a finite set of spatial locations and a finite number of time instants. Then the spatial covariance matrix at different time instants are considered to define the covariance of the process. This set of square, symmetric, positive semi-definite matrices is then represented as a third-order tensor. A suitable decomposition of this tensor can identify the dominant components of the process, and these components are then used to define a closed-form representation of the process. The procedure is analogous to the KL decomposition for a single-parameter process, however, the decompositions and interpretations vary significantly. The tensor decompositions are successfully applied on (i) a heat conduction problem, (ii) a vibration problem, and (iii) a covariance function taken from the literature that was fitted to model a measured wind velocity data. It is observed that the proposed representation provides an efficient approximation to some processes. Furthermore, a comparison with KL decomposition showed that the proposed method is computationally cheaper than the KL, both in terms of computer memory and execution time.

Active trailing edge flaps (TEFs) are one of the most promising devices for helicopter vibration reduction. Smart actuators such as the piezoelectric stack actuators (PEAs) are used for TEF actuation. PEAs possess high energy density and have large force in dynamic condition but are limited to small displacements. In this investigation, we study a linear to rotary motion amplification mechanism (AM-2) based on a pinned-pinned post-buckled beam to actuate trailing edge flaps. A linear motion amplification mechanism is developed and coupled with AM-2 to amplify angular flap deflections. Experiments are conducted on bench top-test setup, and maximum flap angle deflections of the order of 12A degrees are achieved in the static case. An aeroelastic analysis is performed and 91 % reduction in helicopter vibration is obtained with multiharmonic control inputs.

Here we extend the exploration of significantly super-Chandrasekhar magnetized white dwarfs by numerically computing axisymmetric stationary equilibria of differentially rotating magnetized polytropic compact stars in general relativity (GR), within the ideal magnetohydrodynamic regime. We use a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) framework that describes rotating and magnetized axisymmetric white dwarfs, choosing appropriate rotation laws and magnetic field profiles (toroidal and poloidal). The numerical procedure for finding solutions in this framework uses the 3 + 1 formalism of numerical relativity, implemented in the open source XNS code. We construct equilibrium sequences by varying different physical quantities in turn, and highlight the plausible existence of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, with masses in the range of 2-3 solar mass, with central (deep interior) magnetic fields of the order of 10(14) G and differential rotation with surface time periods of about 1-10 s. We note that such white dwarfs are candidates for the progenitors of peculiar, overluminous Type Ia supernovae, to which observational evidence ascribes mass in the range 2.1-2.8 solar mass. We also present some interesting results related to the structure of such white dwarfs, especially the existence of polar hollows in special cases.
