Annual report of the Iowa Highway Research Board Research and Development Activities FY 2006

The Highway Division of the Iowa Department of Transportation engages in research and development for two reasons: first, to find workable solutions to the many problems that require more than ordinary, routine investigation; and second, to identify and implement improved engineering and management practices. This report is submitted in compliance with Sections 310.36 and 312.3A, Code of Iowa, which direct the submission of a report of the Secondary Road Research Fund and the Street Research Fund, respectively. It is a report of the status of research and development projects, which were in progress on June 30, 2006; it is also a report on projects completed during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2005, and ending June 30, 2006.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors A link between endocrinology and nutrition?

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily like the steroid, thyroid, or retinoid hormone receptors, which are ligand-activated transcription factors regulating gene expression. PPARs mediate the induction of the enzymes of the peroxisomal and microsomal fatty-acid oxidation pathways by hypolipidemic drugs such as clofibrate and are probably also involved in the gene expression of other lipid-metabolism-associated proteins that are controlled by fibrate hypolipidemic drugs. That PPARs play an important role in the regulation of lipid metabolism is reinforced by the discovery of their activation by physiologic concentrations of fatty acids. This observation raises the question of whether fatty acids are ligands of PPARs, which would imply that nutritional fatty acids can act like hormones.

Watershed Improvement Review Board Calendar Year 2006 Annual Report, January 31, 2007

The Iowa Watershed Improvement Review Board (WIRB) was created by the Iowa Legislature and signed into law by the Governor in 2005 as Senate File 200. This statute is now codified in Iowa Code Chapter 466A. The fifteen-member Board conducted eight meetings throughout the year in-person or via teleconference. Meetings were held January 24, February 27, March 13, May 15, August 7, September 20, October 6, and December 18. Attachment 3 lists the board members and their organization affiliation. The Board appointed a five-member subcommittee to review and revise the Request For Applications (RFA) documents and submit recommendations to the full Board. The RFA documents were approved as modified at the May 15, 2006 Board meeting.

Offshore work and the work of nurses on board: an integrative review

OBJECTIVETo know the production of theoretical approaches on issues related to offshore work and the work of offshore nurses.METHODIntegrative literature review conducted in the databases of LILACS, BDENF, MEDLINE, SciELO and Index PSI.RESULTSWe selected 33 studies published in national and international journals between 1997 and 2014. The thematic analysis corpus resulted in four central themes: offshore work environment; amid work adversities, an escape; structuring of offshore health and safety services; in search of safe practices.CONCLUSIONThis study contributes to the offshore work of nurses in relation to the nature of work, acting amid adversities and the restless search for safe practices in the open sea.
