When bulk RE-BCO superconductors are used as permanent magnets in engineering applications, they are likely to experience transient variations of the applied magnetic field. The resulting vortex motion may cause a significant temperature increase. As a consequence the initial trapped flux is reduced. In the present work, we first focus on the cause of a temperature increase. The temperature distribution within a superconducting finite cylinder subjected to an alternating magnetic field is theoretically predicted. Results are compared to experimental data obtained by two temperature sensors attached to a bulk YBCO pellet. Second, we consider curative methods for reducing the effect of heat flux on the temperature increase. Hall-probe mappings on YBCO samples maintained out of the thermal equilibrium are performed for two different morphologies : a plain single domain and a single domain with a regularly spaced hole array. The drilled single-domain displays a trapped induction which is weakly affected by the local heating while displaying a high trapped field. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The ability to generate a permanent, stable magnetic field unsupported by an electromotive force is fundamental to a variety of engineering applications. Bulk high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials can trap magnetic fields of magnitude over ten times higher than the maximum field produced by conventional magnets, which is limited practically to rather less than 2 T. In this paper, two large c-axis oriented, single-grain YBCO and GdBCO bulk superconductors are magnetized by the pulsed field magnetization (PFM) technique at temperatures of 40 and 65 K and the characteristics of the resulting trapped field profile are investigated with a view of magnetizing such samples as trapped field magnets (TFMs) in situ inside a trapped flux-type superconducting electric machine. A comparison is made between the temperatures at which the pulsed magnetic field is applied and the results have strong implications for the optimum operating temperature for TFMs in trapped flux-type superconducting electric machines. The effects of inhomogeneities, which occur during the growth process of single-grain bulk superconductors, on the trapped field and maximum temperature rise in the sample are modelled numerically using a 3D finite-element model based on the H-formulation and implemented in Comsol Multiphysics 4.3a. The results agree qualitatively with the observed experimental results, in that inhomogeneities act to distort the trapped field profile and reduce the magnitude of the trapped field due to localized heating within the sample and preferential movement and pinning of flux lines around the growth section regions (GSRs) and growth sector boundaries (GSBs), respectively. The modelling framework will allow further investigation of various inhomogeneities that arise during the processing of (RE)BCO bulk superconductors, including inhomogeneous Jc distributions and the presence of current-limiting grain boundaries and cracks, and it can be used to assist optimization of processing and PFM techniques for practical bulk superconductor applications. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper, a novel approach for mandarin speech emotion recognition, that is mandarin speech emotion recognition based on high dimensional geometry theory, is proposed. The human emotions are classified into 6 archetypal classes: fear, anger, happiness, sadness, surprise and disgust. According to the characteristics of these emotional speech signals, the amplitude, pitch frequency and formant are used as the feature parameters for speech emotion recognition. The new method called high dimensional geometry theory is applied for recognition. Compared with traditional GSVM model, the new method has some advantages. It is noted that this method has significant values for researches and applications henceforth.

A new two-dimensional structure modulation along c- and b-axes has been discovered in superconducting single crystals of Bi2.13Sr1.87CuO6+delta (Bi2201) by x-ray scattering. Such modulation structure does not exist in non-superconducting Bi2201 single crystals, but instead lattice distortions are observed in the a-b-plane. This phenomenon may indicate that both strain relaxation and charge modulation in the a-b-plane are important to the occurrence of superconductivity in the copper oxides.

In this work, a method was established for the determination of impurities in high purity tellurium by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after Fe(OH)(3) coprecipitation. After comparison of coprecipitation ability and separation efficiency between Fe(OH), and Al(OH)(3), Fe(OH)(3) was chosen as the precipitate. A separation factor of 160 for 200 mg tellurium was obtained under conditions of pH 9 and 2 mg of Fe3(+). The 13 elements, such as Bi, Sn, Pb, In, Tl, Cd, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Ti, Be and Zr, could be almost completely coprecipitated under these conditions. In addition, Te memory effect imposed on the ICP-MS instrument was assessed, as well as Te matrix effect that caused the low recovery of Ga, As, Sb and V in real sample was discussed. Finally, the method was evaluated through recovery test and was applied to practical sample analysis, with detection limits of most of the elements being below 0.15 mug g(-1) and R.S.D. below or at approximately 10%, which indicated that this method could fully satisfy the requirements for analysis of 99.999% similar to 99.9999% high purity Te.

The hyphenated technique of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) was applied to the simultaneous determination of five organotin compounds (trimethyltin, dibutyltin, tributyltin, diphenyltin and triphenyltin) in seawater samples. Agilent TC-C18 column was used for the separation, the mobile phase of HPLC was CH3CN : H2O: CH3COOH=65 : 23 : 12 (phi), 0.05% TEA, and pH value was adjusted to 3.0 by diluent ammonia. The flow rate was 0.6 mL . min(-1). Five mixed organotin compounds in a mix standard solution from 100 to 0.5 mu g . L-1 were applied for the method assessment. The experimental results indicate that the correlation coefficient of calibration curves (R-2) for each organotin compound was over 0.998 and the detection limits of the five organotin compounds were lower than 3 ng . L-1. Different mixed organic solvents including dichloromethane or toluene were used for extraction of organotin and the extraction condition of organotin from seawater was optimized. The 100 mL seawater acidized by hydrochloric acid was extracted by 10 mL carbon dichloride (CH2Cl2) with 2% tropolone for 10 min twice. Extracted organic solvents were mixed And blown to one drop by nitrogen with the rate of 1.7 mL . min(-1), then 1 mL acetonitrile was added to the drop for redissolving the organotin compounds. Finally, the mixed redissolution was filtered by 0.22 mu m organic filter membrane before analysis. it was found that the only organotin compound in seawater was triphenyltin (TPHT) and the content was 53.2 ng . L-1. The recoveries test from the standard addition for diphenyltin (DPHT), dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPHT) were over 80%. However, the recovery for trimethyltin (TMT) was relatively low and the value was 50%. The reason might be attributed to the decomposition or adsorption of those compounds during the extraction procedure. Further study on this subject is in progress.

The hyphenated technique of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(HPLC-ICP-MS) was applied to the simultaneous determination of five organotin compounds in the shellfish samples. Agilent TC-C-18 column was selected, mobile phase of the HPLC was CH3CN:H2O: CH3COOH = 65:23:12 (V/V), 0. 05% TEA, pH = 3.0 at flow rate 0.4 mL/min. Five mixed organotin standards from 100 mu g/L to 0. 5 mu g/L was used for the method evaluation. The experimental results indicate that the linearity (R-2) for each compound was over 0.998. The shellfish samples were treated by supersonic extraction with mobile phase for 30min. Four organotin compounds including dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT), diphenyltin (DphT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) in shellfish samples were detected with method mentioned above. It was found that the domain compounds in the samples were tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT). The recoveries test from the standard addition for trimethyltin (TMT tributyltin (TBT), and triphenyltin (TPhT) were, over 80%. However, the recoveries for diphenyltin (DPhT) and dibutyltin (DBT) were relatively low, 37.3% and 75.2% respectively. The reason might be attributed to the decomposition of those compounds during the extraction procedure. The further study on this subject is under the progress.

We have developed an instrument to study the behavior of the critical current density (J(c)) in superconducting wires and tapes as a function of field (mu(0)H), temperature (T), and axial applied strain (epsilon(a)). The apparatus is an improvement of similar devices that have been successfully used in our institute for over a decade. It encompasses specific advantages such as a simple sample layout, a well defined and homogeneous strain application, the possibility of investigating large compressive strains and the option of simple temperature variation, while improving the main drawback in our previous systems by increasing the investigated sample length by approximately a factor of 10. The increase in length is achieved via a design change from a straight beam section to an initially curved beam, placed perpendicular to the applied field axis in the limited diameter of a high field magnet bore. This article describes in detail the mechanical design of the device and its calibrations. Additionally initial J(c)(epsilon(a)) data, measured at liquid helium temperature, are presented for a bronze processed and for a powder-in-tube Nb3Sn superconducting wire. Comparisons are made with earlier characterizations, indicating consistent behavior of the instrument. The improved voltage resolution, resulting from the increased sample length, enables J(c) determinations at an electric field criterion E-c=10 muV/m, which is substantially lower than a criterion of E-c=100 muV/m which was possible in our previous systems. This paper investigates the inherent radio frequency analog challenges associated with near field communication systems. Furthermore, the paper presents a digital based sigma-delta modulator for near field communication transmitter implementations. The proposed digital transmitter architecture is designed to best support data intensive applications requiring higher data rates and complex modulation schemes. An NFC transmitter based on a single-bit sigma-delta DAC is introduced, and then the multi-bit extension with necessary simulation results are presented to confirm the suitability of the architecture for near field communication high speed applications.

Physics professors Frans Koffyberg (right), Fereidoon Razavi (middle), and Bozidar Mitrovic (left) discover a new superconductor. A superconductor is a material that conducts electricity at very low temperatures with zero electrical resistance. The Brock researchers found that a compound of the metals Barium, Lanthanum, Copper, and Oxygen become a superconductor at 30 degrees absolute, which is a record high temperature.

The macroscopic properties of the superconducting phase in the multiphase compound YPd5B3 C.3 have been investigated. The onset of superconductivity was observed at 22.6 K, zero resistance at 21.2 K, the lower critical field Hel at 5 K was determined to be Hel (5) rv 310 Gauss and the compound was found to be an extreme type-II superconductor with the upper critical field in excess of 55000 Gauss at 15 K. From the upper and lower critical field values obtained, several important parameters of the superconducting state were determined at T = 15 K. The Ginzburg-Landau paramater was determined to be ~ > 9 corresponding to a coherence length ~ rv 80A and magnetic penetration depth of 800A. In addition measurements of the superconducting transition temperature Te(P) under purely hydrostatically applied pressure have been carried out. Te(P) of YPd5B3 C.3 decreases linearly with dTe/dP rv -8.814 X 10-5 J

Electron-phonon interaction is considered within the framework of the fluctuating valence of Cu atoms. Anderson's lattice Hamiltonian is suitably modified to take this into account. Using Green's function technique tbe possible quasiparticle excitations' are determined. The quantity 2delta k(O)/ kB Tc is calculated for Tc= 40 K. The calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental results.

The first record of dust deposition events on Mt. Elbrus, Caucasus Mountains derived from a snow pit and a shallow firn core is presented for the 2009–2012 period. A combination of isotopic analysis, SEVIRI red-greenblue composite imagery, MODIS atmospheric optical depth fields derived using the Deep Blue algorithm, air mass trajectories derived using the HYSPLIT model and analyses of meteorological data enabled identification of dust source regions with high temporal (hours) and spatial (ca. 20–100 km) resolution. Seventeen dust deposition events were detected; fourteen occurred in March–June, one in February and two in October. Four events originated in the Sahara, predominantly in northeastern Libya and eastern Algeria. Thirteen events originated in the Middle East, in the Syrian Desert and northern Mesopotamia, from a mixture of natural and anthropogenic sources. Dust transportation from Sahara was associated with vigorous Saharan depressions, strong surface winds in the source region and mid-tropospheric southwesterly flow with daily winds speeds of 20–30 m s−1 at 700 hPa level. Although these events were less frequent than those originating in the Middle East, they resulted in higher dust concentrations in snow. Dust transportation from the Middle East was associated with weaker depressions forming over the source region, high pressure centred over or extending towards the Caspian Sea and a weaker southerly or southeasterly flow towards the Caucasus Mountains with daily wind speeds of 12–18 m s−1 at 700 hPa level. Higher concentrations of nitrates and ammonium characterised dust from the Middle East deposited on Mt. Elbrus in 2009 indicating contribution of anthropogenic sources. The modal values of particle size distributions ranged between 1.98 µm and 4.16 µm. Most samples were characterised by modal values of 2.0– 2.8 µm with an average of 2.6 µm and there was no signifi- cant difference between dust from the Sahara and the Middle East.
