The free energy contribution of capillary waves is calculated to show its significant dependence on the thickness of the liquid layer, when the thickness is very small. It is shown that these oscillations can play an important role in determining the thermodynamic stability of a wetting layer, close to the critical point of a binary liquid mixture in the case of both short range and long range forces. In particular, the thickness of the wetting layer goes to zero as the temperature T approaches Tc.

Free vibration of circular plates of arbitrary thickness is investigated using the method of initial functions. State-space approach is used to derive the governing equations of the above method. The formulation is such that theories of any desired order can be obtained by deleting higher terms in the infinite-order differential equations. Numerical results are obtained for flexural and extensional vibration of circular plates. Results are also computed using Mindlin's theory and they are in agreement with the present analysis.

The poly(vinylidene fluoride)/CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) nanocrystal composite films (thickness approximate to 85 mu m) with relatively high dielectric permittivity (90 at 100 Hz) were prepared by the solution casting followed by spin coating technique. The structural, the microstructural and the dielectric properties of the composites were studied using X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Impedance analyzer respectively. The effective dielectric permittivity (e(eff)) of the composite increased with increase in the volume fraction of CCTO at all the frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz) under investigation. The room temperature dielectric permittivity which is around 90 at 100 Hz, has increased to about 290 at 125 degrees C (100 Hz). These results may be exploited in the development of high energy density capacitors.

Thermal contact conductance (TCC) measurements are made on bare and gold plated (<= 0.5 mu m) oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) Cu and brass contacts in vacuum, nitrogen, and argon environments. It is observed that the TCC in gaseous environment is significantly higher than that in vacuum due to the enhanced thermal gap conductance. It is found that for a given contact load and gas pressure, the thermal gap conductance for bare OFHC Cu contacts is higher than that for gold plated contacts. It is due to the difference in the molecular weights of copper and gold, which influences the exchange of kinetic energy between the gas molecules and contact surfaces. Furthermore, the gap conductance is found to increase with increasing thickness of gold plating. Topography measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of contact surfaces revealed that surfaces become smoother with increasing gold plating thickness, thus resulting in smaller gaps and consequently higher gap conductance. Curves for the uniformity in film thickness on spherical substrates are drawn for various geometries. The optimum source-to-substrate height for maximum uniformity of the film thickness is determined. These data are approximated to achieve uniform thickness on a large number of small planar substrates loaded on a large spherical substrate holder, the appropriate geometry being selected on the basis of the radius of curvature of the substrate holder.

Simple expansion chambers, the simplest of the muffler configurations, have very limited practical application due to the presence of periodic troughs in the transmission loss spectrum which drastically lower the overall transmission loss of the muffler. Tuned extended inlet and outlet can be designed to nullify three-fourths of these troughs, making use of the plane wave theory. These cancellations would not occur unless one altered the geometric lengths for the extended tube in order to incorporate the effect of evanescent higher-order modes (multidimensional effect) through end corrections or lumped inertance approximation at the area discontinuities or junctions. End corrections of the extended inlet and outlet have been studied by several researchers. However the effect of wall thickness of the inlet/outlet duct on end correction has not been studied explicitly. This has significant effect on the tuning of an extended inlet/outlet expansion chamber. It is investigated here experimentally as well as numerically (through use of 3-D FEM software) for stationary medium. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hard, low stress diamond-like carbon films have been deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition technique, The various substrates include soft IR components like ZnS and ZnSe windows, Gaseous precursors such as propene, ethyl alcohol and acetone have been used to synthesize the films to study the nature of precursors in determining the film compatibility with the underlying component (substrate), The residual compressive stresses, the Young's modulus and the adhesion energy of the films have been estimated to be 10(10) dynes/cm(2), 10(10) N/m(2) and 1000 ergs/cm(2) respectively. To alleviate film failure, a study on the effects of additive gases such as hydrogen and the use of buffer layers such as ZrO2, has been undertaken, The diamond-like carbon films produced here are hard (5000 kg/mm(2)), specularly smooth in the wavelength region from 2.5 mu m to 20 mu m, with no microstructural features and have excellent adhesion on ZnS and ZnSe windows. The figure of merit of these films for aero-space applications has been evaluated by subjecting the film-buffer layer ZnS or ZnSe composite stack to wind, dust and rain erosion studies and by establishing the integrity of the specular IR transmittance of the stack upto 16 or 20 mu m as the case may be.

A new approach based on variable density in conjunction with shallow shell theory is proposed to analyse rotating shallow shell of variable thickness. Coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations governing shallows shells of variable thickness are first derived before applying the variable density approach. Results obtained from the new approach compare well with FEM calculation for a wide range of profiles considered in this paper.

Polycrystalline Ti thin films are shown to gradually transform from face-centered cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close-packed structure (hcp) with increasing film thickness. Diffraction stress analysis revealed that the fcc phase is formed in a highly compressive hcp matrix (>= 2 GPa), the magnitude of which decreases with increasing film thickness. A correlation between stress and crystallographic texture vis-a-vis the fcc-hcp phase transformation has been established. The total free energy change of the system upon phase transformation calculated using the experimental results shows that the fcc-hcp transformation is theoretically possible in the investigated film thickness regime (144-720 nm) and the hcp structure is stable for films thicker than 720 nm, whereas the fcc structure can be stabilized in Ti films much thinner than 144 nm. Anatase titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been synthesized from P25 TiO2 powder by alkali hydrothermal method followed by post annealing. The microstructure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the formation of anatase nanotubes with a diameter of 9-10 nm. These NTs are used to make photo anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Layer by layer deposition with curing of each layer at 350 C is employed to realize films of desired thickness. The performance of these cells is studied using photovoltaic measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to quantitatively analyze the effect of thickness on the performance of these cells. These studies revealed that the thickness of TiO2 has a pronounced impact on the cell performance and the optimum thickness lies in the range of 10-14 mu m. In comparison to dye solar cells made of P25, TNTs based cells exhibit an improved open circuit voltage and fill factor (FF) due to an increased electron lifetime, as revealed by EIS analysis. Graded alternate layers of Al2O3 and 8% Y2O3-ZrO2 and their admixtures were plasma sprayed onto bond-coated mild steel. They were evaluated for thermal-shock resistance, thermal-barrier characteristics, hot corrosion resistance (molten NaCl corrodant) and depth of attack, adhesion strength and the presence of phases. Although front-back temperature drops of 423-623 K were observed, some of the coatings showed good adherence even after 100 thermal shack cycles. In the sequence of the graded layers, the oxide which is directly in contact with the bond coat appears to influence the properties especially in coatings of 150 and 300 mu m thickness. Molten NaCl readily attacks the films at high hot-face temperatures (1273 K for 1 h) and the adhesive strength falls significantly by 50-60%. Diffusion of alkaline elements is also found to depend on the chemical composition of the outer coating directly facing the molten corrodant. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.

Naturally occurring zircon sand was plasma spray coated on steel substrates previously coated with NiCrAlY bond coat. The coatings were characterized for their microstructure, chemical composition, thermal shock resistance, and the nature of structural phases present, The as-sprayed coatings consisted of t-ZrO2 (major phase), m-ZrO2, ZrSiO4 (minor phases), and amorphous SiO2. These coatings, when annealed at 1200 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s yielded a ZrSiO4 phase as a result of the reaction between ZrO2 and SiO2, Dramatic changes occurred in the characteristics of the coatings when a mixture of zircon sand and Y2O3 was plasma spray coated and annealed at 1400 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s, The t-ZrO2 phase was completely stabilized, and these coatings were found to have considerable potential for thermal barrier applications.

Lead-lanthanum-titanate (Pb0.72La0.28)TiO3 (PLT) is one of the interesting materials for DRAM applications due to its room temperature paraelectric nature and its higher dielectric permittivity. PLT thin films of different thickness ranging from 0.54- 0.9 mum were deposited on Pt coated Si substrates by excimer laser ablation technique. We have measured the voltage (field) dependence, the thickness dependence, temperature dependence of dc leakage currents and analysis is done on these PLT thin films. Current- voltage characteristics were measured at different temperatures for different thick films and the thickness dependence of leakage current has been explained by considering space charge limited conduction mechanism. The charge transport phenomena were studied in detail for films of different thicknesses for dynamic random access memory applications.

he thickness dependence of the electrical properties in the thin films of uniaxial SrBi2Nb2O9 has been studied in this report. According to many published literatures, it could be an effective way to identify the basic conduction process. The laser ablation was chosen as the deposition technique to ensure an oriented growth and a proper stoichiometric deposition. The structural, dielectric and conduction properties were studied as a function of thickness. The films showed good ferroelectric properties, an ordered growth, and a space-charge controlled conduction process, which was double checked by reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, and also by examining the high field current response of the sample varying in thickness.

We report a new method for quantitative estimation of graphene layer thicknesses using high contrast imaging of graphene films on insulating substrates with a scanning electron microscope. By detecting the attenuation of secondary electrons emitted from the substrate with an in-column low-energy electron detector, we have achieved very high thickness-dependent contrast that allows quantitative estimation of thickness up to several graphene layers. The nanometer scale spatial resolution of the electron micrographs also allows a simple structural characterization scheme for graphene, which has been applied to identify faults, wrinkles, voids, and patches of multilayer growth in large-area chemical vapor deposited graphene. We have discussed the factors, such as differential surface charging and electron beam induced current, that affect the contrast of graphene images in detail.
