Coastal Photograph by Hubert Chanson This photograph of standing wave bed forms was taken at very low tide. The tidal range was 10 m. The bed forms were located on the island of Le Verdelet, in a channel between Le Grande Jaune and Le Verdelet. It is likely that these standing wave bed forms were formed during transcritical shallow water flows at the end of ebb tide. The author’s watch is in the foreground for scale. This paper presents a comprehensive and critical review of the mechanisms and kinetics of NO and N2O reduction reaction with coal chars under fluidised-bed combustion conditions (FBC). The heterogeneous reactions of NO and N2O with char/carbon surface have been well recognised as the most important processes in reducing both NOx and N2O in situ FBC. Compared to NO-carbon reactions in FBC, the reactions of N2O with chars have been relatively less understood and studied. Beginning with the overall reaction schemes for both NO and N2O reduction, the paper extensively discusses the reaction mechanisms including the effects of active surface sites. Generally, NO- and N2O-carbon reactions follow a series of step reactions. However, questions remain concerning the role of adsorbed phases of NO and N2O, and the behaviour of different surface sites. Important kinetics factors such as the rate expressions, kinetics parameters as well as the effects of surface area and pore structure are discussed in detail. The main factors influencing the reduction of NO and N2O in FBC conditions are the chemical and physical properties of chars, and the operating parameters of FBC such as temperature, presence of CO, O-2 and pressure. It is shown that under similar conditions, N2O is more readily reduced on the char surface than NO. Temperature was found to be a very important parameter in both NO and N2O reduction. It is generally agreed that both NO- and N2O-carbon reactions follow first-order reaction kinetics with respect to the NO and N2O concentrations. The kinetic parameters for NO and N2O reduction largely depend on the pore structure of chars. The correlation between the char surface area and the reactivities of NO/N2O-char reactions is considered to be of great importance to the determination of the reaction kinetics. The rate of NO reduction by chars is strongly enhanced by the presence of CO and O-2, but these species may not have significant effects on the rate of N2O reduction. However, the presence of these gases in FBC presents difficulties in the study of kinetics since CO cannot be easily eliminated from the carbon surface. In N2O reduction reactions, ash in chars is found to have significant catalytic effects, which must be accounted for in the kinetic models and data evaluation. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation into the fluidized-bed coating of cylindrical metal specimens using two types of thermoplastic powders, Rilsan(R) PA11, a nylon-11 powder produced by Elf Atochem, France and Cotene(TM) 4612, a linear low density polyethylene powder produced by J.R Courtenay (New Zealand). The effects of dipping time, preheat temperature and particle size distribution on coating thickness and surface finish were investigated. Consistent trends in coating thickness growth with dipping time were obtained for both nylon-11 and polyethylene powders with increases in coating thickness with preheat temperature. For the same preheat temperature, the lower melting point of polyethylene results in thicker coatings compared to those of nylon-11. There is a negligible change in the coating thickness for sieved powders compared to that for unsieved powders. A pre-heat temperatures of between 240 degrees C and 300 degrees C is necessary to achieve an acceptable surface finish with both nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. To minimize errors in achieving the desired coating thickness, dipping times shorter than 2 s are not recommended. The use of graphs of coating thickness versus dipping time in combination with the coating surface roughness plots presented in this paper enable the optimal choice of pre-heat temperature and dipping time to achieve acceptable surface finish. Changes in the physical properties (such as particle density, bulk density of the bed, shrinkage and bed porosity) of fresh green bean particulates were investigated during drying. Three length:diameter ratios (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1) were considered, using drying conditions of 50 +/- 2 degrees C and 13 +/- 2% relative humidity in a heat pump dehumidifier system. The fluidization behaviour was also evaluated at 10 levels of moisture content. The fluidization experiments demonstrated that the minimum fluidization velocity decreases as the drying proceeds due to the reduced moisture content and changes in the physical properties of the bean particulates. Empirical relationships of the following nature were developed for the change in shrinkage [VR = 1 - Be-kMR], particle density [rho(p) = A + BMR + C (exp)(-D MR)], bulk density [rho(b) = a(1) + b(1)MR + c(1)MR(2)] and bed porosity [epsilon = a(2) + b(2)MR + c(2)MR(2)] with the moisture content during fluidized bed drying.

A dual catalyst bed system (Au/Fe2O3 + Pt-Pd/Al2O3) for eliminating hydrogen from the CO2 feed gas in urea synthesis is found to be far superior to commercially available and patented catalysts in catalytic activity. At relatively low temperatures, hydrogen is eliminated and coexistent CO is also oxidized completely to useful CO2. This can avoid effectively the accidental explosion of hydrogen-oxygen-ammonia mixed gases, thus ensuring the safety of urea synthesis.

A numerical model of heat transfer in fluidized-bed coating of solid cylinders is presented. By defining suitable dimensionless parameters, the governing equations and its associated initial and boundary conditions are discretized using the method of orthogonal collocation and the resulting ordinary differential equations simultaneously solved for the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperatures. Parametric Studies showed that the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperature depend on the relative heat capacities of the polymer powder and object, the latent heat of fusion and the size of the cylinder. Model predictions for the coating thickness and wall temperature compare reasonably well with numerical predictions and experimental coating data in the literature and with our own coating experiments using copper cylinders immersed in nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. The combination of bupropion and naltrexone is one of the most promising new possibilities for the treatment of obesity in an era of increasing prevalence of this disease and decreasing options for its pharmacological management. Although approved by FDA panel members, it was temporally rejected by the FDA afterwards, who demanded more cardiovascular safety data for its commercialization. This monograph will focus on the physiology involved in its mechanisms of action and results of clinical trials.

Purpose: To evaluate the additive effect of dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination in patients under monotherapy with latanoprost. Patients and Methods: In this prospective, 4-week, randomized, open-label controlled clinical trial, patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, which presented at least 15% intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction after a minimum period of 15 days of monotherapy with latanoprost and whose IOP level was considered above the established target-IOP level were randomized to receive fixed combination of timolol/dorzolamide twice daily in one of eyes. The fellow eye was kept under monotherapy and was included in the control group. A modified diurnal tension curve (mDTC) followed by the water drinking test were performed in the baseline and week 4 visits to evaluate IOP profile between groups. Results: Forty-nine per-protocol patients were analyzed. After latanoprost monotherapy run-in period, IOP levels were significantly reduced (P<0.001) in both control and study groups to 15.34 +/- 2.96 mm Hg and 15.24 +/- 2.84 mm Hg (30.8% and 32.2% IOP reduction, respectively; P=0.552). At week 4, mean baseline diurnal IOP levels were 15.60 +/- 3.09 and 14.44 +/- 3.03 (7.4% difference; P=0.01). Mean baseline IOP modified diurnal tension curve peak after latanoprost run-in period were 17.47 +/- 3.68 mm Hg and 17.02 +/- 3.35 mm Hg (control and study eyes, respectively; P=0.530). At week 4 visit, mean water-drinking test peaks were significantly reduced in the study eye group in comparison with the control group: 19.02 +/- 3.81 mm Hg and 20.39 +/- 4.19 mm Hg, respectively (6.7% reduction; P=0.039). Conclusions: In our sample, dorzolamide 2%/timolol 0.5% fixed combination as add-on therapy in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension under monotherapy with latanoprost with IOP already in mid-teens levels may further enhance pressure reduction.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy and tolerability of the fixed combination of timolol maleate 0.5%/brimonidine tartrate 0.2% versus fixed combination of timolol maleate 0.5%/dorzolamide 2% in patients with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) over 8 weeks. Patients and Methods: This 8-week, multicentric. interventional, randomized, open-label, parallel group study was conducted Lit 4 centers in Brazil and 1 center in Argentina. Patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension were randomized to receive bilaterally fixed combination of brimonidine/timolol maleate 0.5% or fixed combination of dorzolamide 2%/timolol 0.5% twice daily at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. A modified diurnal tension curve (8:00 AM 10:30 AM, 02:00 PM, and 4:00 PM) followed by the water drinking test (WDT), which estimates IOP peak of diurnal tension curve, were performed in the baseline and week-8 visits. Adverse events data were recorded at each visit. Results: A total of 210 patients were randomized (brimonidine/timolol, n = 111; dorzolamide/timolol, n = 99). Mean baseline IOP was 23.43 +/- 3.22 mm Hg and 23.43 +/- 4.06 mm Hg in the patients treated with brimonidine/timolol and dorzolamide/timolol, respectively (P = 0.993). Mean diurnal IOP reduction after 8 weeks were 7.02 +/- 3.06 mm Hg and 6.91 +/- 3.67 mm Hg. respectively (P = 0.811). The adjusted difference between groups (analysis of covariance) Lit week 8 was not statistically significant (P = 0.847). Mean baseline WDT peak was 27.79 +/- 4.29 mm Hg in the brimonidine/timolol group and 27.68 +/- 5.46 mm Hg in the dorzolamide/timolol group. After 8 weeks of treatment, mean WDT peaks were 20.94 +/- 3.76 mm Hg (P < 0.001) and 20.98 +/- 4.19 (P < 0.001), respectively. The adjusted difference between groups (analysis of covariance) was not statistically significant (P = 0.469). No statistical difference in terms of adverse events was Found between groups. Conclusions: Both fixed combinations were capable of significantly reducing the mean diurnal IOP, mean diurnal peak, and mean WDT peak after 8 weeks of treatment. Also, both fixed combinations are well tolerated with few side effects.

Objective: Micro RNA (miRNA) is a class of small noncoding RNA that plays a major role in the regulation of gene expression, which has been related to cancer behavior. The possibility of analyzing miRNA from the archives of pathology laboratories is exciting, as it allows for large retrospective studies. Formalin is the most common fixative used in the surgical pathology routine, and its promotion of nucleic acid degradation is well known. Our aim is to compare miRNA profiles from formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues with fresh-frozen prostate cancer tissues. Methods: The expression of 14 miRNAs was determined by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in 5 paired fresh-frozen and FFPE tissues, which were representative of prostate carcinoma. Results: There was a very good correlation of the miRNA expression of miR-let7c and miR-32 between the fresh-frozen and FFPE tissues, with Pearson`s correlation coefficients of 0.927 (P = 0.023) and 0.960 (P = 0.010), respectively. For the remaining miRNAs, the correlation was good with Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.638 (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Analysis of miRNAs from routinely processed and stored FFPE prostate tissue is feasible for some miRNAs using qRT-PCR. Further studies should be conducted to confirm the reliability of using stock tissues for miRNA expression determination. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Here we investigated the possible association between the carboxypeptidase A (CPA)-like activity of the rat mesenteric arterial bed (MAB) perfusate and the ability of this fluid of forming angiotensin (Ang) 1-9 and Ang 1-7 upon incubation with Ang I and Ang II, respectively. Initially, we observed that anion exchange chromatography of the perfusate would consistently split the characteristic Z-Val-Phe-hydrolyzing activity of CPA-like enzymes into five distinct peaks, whose proteolytic activities were then determined using also Ang I and Ang II as substrates. The resulting proteolytic profile for each peak indicated that rat MAB perfusate contains a complex mixture of carboxypeptidases; tentatively, five carboxypeptidases were distinguished based on their substrate preferences toward Z-Val-Phe. Ang I and Ang II. The respective reactions, namely, Z-Val-Phe cleavage, Ang I to Ang 1-9 conversion and Ang II to Ang 1-7 conversion, were inhibited by 1,10-phenanthroline and nearly fully blocked by potato carboxypeptidase inhibitor. Also, all the CPA-like activity peaks prepared by anion exchange chromatography were tested negative for contaminating Ang I-converting enzyme-2, cathepsin A and prolylcarboxypeptidase. Overall, our results indicate that rat MAB perfusate contains a multiplicity of Ang I and Ang II-processing CPA-like enzymes whose proteolytic specificities suggest they might perform peculiar regulatory roles in the local resin-angiotensin system. The Golgi method has been used for over a century to describe the general morphology of neurons in the nervous system of different species. The ""single-section"" Golgi method of Gabbott and Somogyi (1984) and the modifications made by Izzo et al. (1987) are able to produce consistent results. Here, we describe procedures to show cortical and subcortical neurons of human brains immersed in formalin for months or even years. The tissue was sliced with a vibratome, post-fixed in a combination of paraformaldehyde and picric acid in phosphate buffer, followed by osmium tetroxide and potassium dicromate, ""sandwiched"" between cover slips, and immersed in silver nitrate. The whole procedure takes between 5 and 11 days to achieve good results. The Golgi method has its characteristic pitfalls but, with this procedure, neurons and glia appear well-impregnated, allowing qualitative and quantitative studies under light microscopy. This contribution adds to the basic techniques for the study of human nervous tissue with the same advantages described for the ""single-section"" Golgi method in other species; it is easy and fast, requires minimal equipment, and provides consistent results.
