A novel method for the preparation of oligothiophene molecular wires is described via a bi-directional solid-phase synthesis. Using an alternating sequence of bromination and Stille coupling reactions, oligomers were obtained up to the heptamer in excellent yield and purity.

A series of solid electrolytes (Ce0.8RE0.2)(1-x)MxO2-delta(RE: Rare earth, M: Alkali earth) were prepared by sol-gel methods. XRD indicated that a pure fluorite phase was formed at 800 degrees C. The synthesis temperature by the sol-gel methods was about 700 degrees C lower than by the traditional ceramic method. The electrical conductivity and impedance spectra were measured. XPS showed that the oxygen vacancy increased obviously by doping MO, thus, resulting in the increase of the oxygen ionic transport number and conductivity. The performance of ceria-based solid electrolyte was improved. The effects of RE2O3 and MO on the electrical properties were discussed. The conductivity and the oxygen ionic transport number of (Ce0.8Sm0.2)(1-0.05)Ca0.05O2-delta is 0.126 S.cm(-1) and 0.99 at 800 degrees C, respectively.

Two new chiral liquid crystals of schiff-base type have been synthesized. This series of compounds contain a-chloro acidic ester chain prepared from commercially available L-valine. Both of the compounds exhibit tilted smectic phases; their phase transitions were studied using DSC and polarized optical microscopy; the influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds on the phase behavior was studied as well.

The synthesis of three new series of chiral Schiffs bases containing benzilideneaniline and 2-hydroxybenzilideneaniline moieties as mesogenic cores is presented. Differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements were used to study the phase transition temperatures and behaviour. The results reveal that most of these materials show chiral smectic mesomorphism.

Gas phase ion-molecular reactions of C-60 with the ion system of CS2 have been studied in the ion source of mass spectrometer. It was found for the first time that the sulfuric derivative of C-60-C60S+ was the main ions in the ion source, they did not react with C-60 to form adduct ions due to their highly saturated structures. According to the dynamic analysis, the product ion came from the reaction of C-60 with the fragment ion S+. The adduct ion may have the structure of epsulfide that is advantageous in energy.

A novel method of synthesizing protein chiral stationary phase (protein-CSP) is proposed with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine as the activator. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) based chiral columns (150x4.6 mm I.D.) were prepared successfully within 8 h. With tryptophan as the probe solute, it was observed that the BSA immobilized by this method had a better ability to distinguish enantiomers than that activated by glutaric dialdehyde. This may be due to the well-maintained BSA conformation and the larger amount of BSA immobilized on the silica gel. The BSA-CSP prepared by this method was relatively stable under experimental conditions, and the resolution of 13 chiral compounds was achieved. The coupling reaction in this method is mild, reliable and reproducible; it is also suitable for the immobilization of various biopolymers in the preparation of bioreactor, biosensor and affinity chromatography columns. C-reactive protein (CRP) is the prototypic human acute-phase protein and is found at increased levels in the blood during episodes of inflammation. CRP was generally thought to be produced only by hepatocytes; however, several studies have shown extrahepatic synthesis of CRP. A previous study showed that PM10 and ultrafine carbon black (ufCB) were able to induce CRP expression in A549 cells. This study aims to examine the factors that lead to the production of CRP in A549 cells. A549 human lung epithelial cells were treated with cytokines (interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor , interferon , or interleukin 1) or carbon particles (CB and ufCB) for 18 h. It was found that CRP could be expressed within the cells and that CRP was secreted from the cells particularly with tumor necrosis factor , CB and ufCB treatments. It was also found that this expression of CRP with CB and ufCB treatments was dependent on nuclear factor kappa B (NFB). The expression of CRP in A549 cells may indicate an important role for CRP expression and secretion from lung epithelial cells in response to inflammatory stimuli.

Irradiated rabbits were grafted with a mixture of bone marrow, lymph node and spleen cells from donors hyperimmunized against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Recipient and donors were characterized by different allotypic specificities. Antibodies synthesized in the recipients display allotypic markers from the recipients but idiotypic specificities cross-reactive with those of donor antibodies. The results show that the differentiation of new host B cells is influenced by the presence of donor memory cells and are interpreted in the light of network concepts.

Irradiated rabbits grafted with allogeneic lymph node, spleen and bone marrow cells from a donor rabbit hyperimmunized against tobacco mosaic virus synthesize high affinity antibodies, displaying mainly recipient allotypic specificities, after antigen boosting. By contrast, recipient rabbits from non-immune donors synthesize antibodies of lower affinity. It is suggested that the differentiation of new emerging host B cells is specifically influenced by the presence of donor-memory cells.
