The t (t) over bar production cross section and top quark mass are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment. The measurements are performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state. Results of the cross section measurement in events with and without b-quark identification are obtained and combined. The measured value is sigma(tt) - 168 +/- 18 (stat:) +/- 14 (syst:) +/- 7 (lumi:) pb, consistent with predictions from the standard model. The top quark mass m(top) is reconstructed with two different methods, a full kinematic analysis and a matrix weighting technique. The combination yields a measurement of m(top) = 175.5 +/- 4.6 (stat:) +/- 4: 6 (syst:) GeV/c(2).

The ground state masses and binding energies of the nucleon, lambda0, lambdac+ , lambdab0 are studied within a constituent quark QCD-inspired light-front model. The light-front Faddeev equations for the Qqq composite spin 1/2 baryons, are derived and solved numerically. The experimental data for the masses are qualitatively described by a flavor independent effective interaction.

We briefly discuss four different possible types of transitions from quark to hadronic matter and their characteristic signatures in terms of correlations. We also highlight the effects arising from mass modification of hadrons in hot and dense hadronic matter, as well as their quantum statistical consequences: the appearance of squeezed quantum states and the associated experimental signatures, i.e., the back-to-back correlations of particle-antiparticle pairs. We briefly review the theoretical results of these squeezed quanta, generated by in-medium modified masses, starting from the first indication of the existence of surprising particle-antiparticle correlations, and ending by considering the effects of chiral dynamics on these correlation patterns. Nevertheless, a prerequisite for such a signature is the experimental verification of its observability. Therefore, the experimental observation of back-to-back correlations in high energy heavy ion reactions would be a unique signature, proving the existence of in-medium mass modification of hadronic states. on the other hand, their disappearance at some threshold centrality or collision energy would indicate that the hadron formation mechanism would have qualitatively changed: asymptotic hadrons above such a threshold are not formed from medium modified hadrons anymore, but rather by new degrees of freedom characterizing the medium. Furthermore, the disappearance of the squeezed BBC could also serve as a signature of a sudden, non-equilibrium hadronization scenario from a supercooled quark-gluon plasma phase.

1/N(c) expansion in QCD (with N(c) the number of colors) suggests using a potential from meson sector (e.g., Richardson) for baryons. For light quarks a sigma-field has to be introduced to ensure chiral symmetry breaking (chi-SB). It is found that nuclear matter properties can be used to pin down the chi-SB modeling. All masses, M(N), m-sigma, m-omega, are found to scale with density. The equations are solved self-consistently.

Complex mass poles, or ghost poles, are present in the Hartree-Fock solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the nucleon propagator in renormalizable models with Yukawa-type meson-nucleon couplings, as shown many years ago by Brown, Puff and Wilets (BPW), These ghosts violate basic theorems of quantum field theory and their origin is related to the ultraviolet behavior of the model interactions, Recently, Krein et.al, proved that the ghosts disappear when vertex corrections are included in a self-consistent way, softening the interaction sufficiently in the ultraviolet region. In previous studies of pi N scattering using ''dressed'' nucleon propagator and bare vertices, did by Nutt and Wilets in the 70's (NW), it was found that if these poles are explicitly included, the value of the isospin-even amplitude A((+)) is satisfied within 20% at threshold. The absence of a theoretical explanation for the ghosts and the lack of chiral symmetry in these previous studies led us to re-investigate the subject using the approach of the linear sigma-model and study the interplay of low-energy theorems for pi N scattering and ghost poles. For bare interaction vertices we find that ghosts are present in this model as well and that the A((+)) value is badly described, As a first approach to remove these complex poles, we dress the vertices with phenomenological form factors and a reasonable agreement with experiment is achieved, In order to fix the two cutoff parameters, we use the A((+)) value for the chiral limit (m(pi) --> 0) and the experimental value of the isoscalar scattering length, Finally, we test our model by calculating the phase shifts for the S waves and we find a good agreement at threshold. A quark-diquark approximation is used to investigate the mass spectroscopy of the spin-1/2 baryons belonging to the SU(3)-flavor group in a nonrelativistic potential approach. The baryon spectra obtained are confronted with relativistic results and experimental data. Root-mean-square radii are also calculated. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.

We quantize a generalized version of the Schwinger model, where the two chiral sectors couples with different strengths to the U(1) gauge field. Starting from a theory which includes a generalized Wess-Zumino term, we obtain the equal time commutation relation for physical fields, both the singular and non-singular cases are considered. The photon propagators are also computed in their gauge dependent and invariant versions. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

A time-dependent projection technique is used to treat the initial-value problem for self-interacting fermionic fields. On the basis of the general dynamics of the fields, we derive formal equations of kinetic-type for the set of one-body dynamical variables. A nonperturbative mean-field expansion can be written for these equations. We treat this expansion in lowest order, which corresponds to the Gaussian mean-field approximation, for a uniform system described by the chiral Gross-Neveu Hamiltonian. Standard stationary features of the model, such as dynamical mass generation due to chiral symmetry breaking and a phenomenon analogous to dimensional transmutation, are reobtained in this context. The mean-field time evolution of nonequilibrium initial states is discussed.
