Since 1998, debate has occurred over whether light synchronises the human biological clock through the visual system only, or if the light penetrating our skin is also influential. This thesis provides definitive, debate ending, evidence that skin exposure to even intensely bright light has no impact on circadian timing. The portfolio presents a review of the literature regarding the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy as a treatment for borderline personality disorder, a summary of the proposed mechanisms of action on the various treatment components, and a description of the clinical application of the four 'skills training modules' via the use of four case study examples.

This paper presents a new study on the application of the framework of Computational Media Aesthetics to the problem of automated understanding of film. Leveraging Film Grammar as the means to closing the "semantic gap" in media analysis, we examine film rhythm, a powerful narrative concept used to endow structure and form to the film compositionally and enhance its lyrical quality experientially. The novelty of this paper lies in the specification and investigation of the rhythmic elements that are present in two cinematic devices; namely motion and editing patterns, and their potential usefulness to automated content annotation and management systems. In our rhythm model, motion behavior is classified as being either nonexistent, fluid or staccato for a given shot. Shot neighborhoods in movies are then grouped by proportional makeup of these motion behavioral classes to yield seven high-level rhythmic arrangements that prove to be adept at indicating likely scene content (e.g. dialogue or chase sequence) in our experiments. The second part of our investigation presents a computational model to detect editing patterns as either metric, accelerated, decelerated or free. Details of the algorithm for the extraction of these classes are presented, along with experimental results on real movie data. We show with an investigation of combined rhythmic patterns that, while detailed content identification via rhythm types alone is not possible by virtue of the fact that film is not codified to this level in terms of rhythmic elements, analysis of the combined motion/editing rhythms can allow us to determine that the content has changed and hypothesize as to why this is so. We present three such categories of change and demonstrate their efficacy for capturing useful film elements (e.g. scene change precipitated by plot event), by providing data support from five motion pictures.

This paper forms a continuation of our work focused on exploiting film grammar for the task of automated film understanding. We examine film rhythm, a powerful narrative concept used to endow structure and form to the film compositionally and to enhance its lyrical quality experientially. Of the many, often complex, cinematic devices contributing to film rhythm, this paper investigates the rhythmic elements that are present in edited sequences of shots, and presents a novel computational model to detect shot structural rhythm as either metric, accelerated, decelerated, or free. Historians have typically focused on the ‘six o'clock swill’ as the pub drinker's principal response to the introduction of the early closing of pubs in most Australian states during World War I. While this focus has enhanced our understanding of gendered pub drinking practices during trading hours it has circumscribed our knowledge of the range of responses to six o'clock closing. Less frequently analysed is what the pub drinker did after the hour of six o'clock. In this article I explore how ‘habit memory’, especially people's everyday drinking habits persisted despite the best efforts to regulate them. I consider how factors such as class, leisure and gender were implicated in drinking habits, and why there was an increase in what were defined as illegal drinking practices such as sly-grogging and after-hours trading. This article suggests that the pub drinker resented the violation of familiar customs and was prepared to engage in illegal activities in order to obtain alcohol.

‘Six o’clock swill’ is one of the best known terms in Australian history, popularly associated with the drinking practices of a fifty-year period when pubs closed at six o’clock in most Australian states. Historians have tended to link the emergence of the’six o’clock swill’ to the introduction of early or six o’clock closing during the Great War. A closer analysis suggests it was not licensing law alone which impelled its emergence but historically specific conditions during World War II. Moreover, the term ‘six o’clock swill’ was no mere description of drinking practices; importantly it generated cultural politics particular to time and place.

With Hg-199 atoms confined in an optical lattice trap in the Lamb-Dicke regime, we obtain a spectral line at 265.6 nm for which the FWHM is similar to 15 Hz. Here we lock an ultrastable laser to this ultranarrow S-1(0) - P-3(0) clock transition and achieve a fractional frequency instability of 5.4 x 10(-15) / root tau for tau <= 400 s. The highly stable laser light used for the atom probing is derived from a 1062.6 nm fiber laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity that exhibits a mean drift rate of -6.0 x 10(-17) s-(1) (-16.9 mHzs(-1) at 282 THz) over a six month period. A comparison between two such lasers locked to independent optical cavities shows a flicker noise limited fractional frequency instability of 4 x 10(-16) per cavity. Circadian rhythms in pacemaker cells persist for weeks in constant darkness, while in other types of cells the molecular oscillations that underlie circadian rhythms damp rapidly under the same conditions. Although much progress has been made in understanding the biochemical and cellular basis of circadian rhythms, the mechanisms leading to damped or self-sustained oscillations remain largely unknown. There exist many mathematical models that reproduce the circadian rhythms in the case of a single cell of the Drosophila fly. However, not much is known about the mechanisms leading to coherent circadian oscillation in clock neuron networks. In this work we have implemented a model for a network of interacting clock neurons to describe the emergence (or damping) of circadian rhythms in Drosophila fly, in the absence of zeitgebers. Our model consists of an array of pacemakers that interact through the modulation of some parameters by a network feedback. The individual pacemakers are described by a well-known biochemical model for circadian oscillation, to which we have added degradation of PER protein by light and multiplicative noise. The network feedback is the PER protein level averaged over the whole network. In particular, we have investigated the effect of modulation of the parameters associated with (i) the control of net entrance of PER into the nucleus and (ii) the non-photic degradation of PER. Our results indicate that the modulation of PER entrance into the nucleus allows the synchronization of clock neurons, leading to coherent circadian oscillations under constant dark condition. On the other hand, the modulation of non-photic degradation cannot reset the phases of individual clocks subjected to intrinsic biochemical noise.
