A short-term whole-skin organ culture model has been established to enable the investigation of cell cycle perturbations in epidermal layer cells following exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). This model affords the opportunity to manipulate the growth and nutrient conditions, and to perform detailed biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of skin cells in their normal epidermal layer microenvironment. The use of this model is described in this chapter.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless systems use multiple element antennas at the transmitter and receiver to offer improved capacity over conventional single antenna systems in a rich scattering environment. In this paper, the microwave perspective of operation of MIMO system is given. Following the new interpretation of operation, an electromagnetic model is introduced to assess the MIMO system transmission capacity. The proposed model is shown to provide good agreement with reported results in the literature.

In recent years, the European Union has come to view cyber security, and in particular, cyber crime as one of the most relevant challenges to the completion of its Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. Given European societies’ increased reliance on borderless and decentralized information technologies, this sector of activity has been identified as an easy target for actors such as organised criminals, hacktivists or terrorist networks. Such analysis has been accompanied by EU calls to step up the fight against unlawful online activities, namely through increased cooperation among law enforcement authorities (both national and extra- communitarian), the approximation of legislations, and public- private partnerships. Although EU initiatives in this field have, so far, been characterized by a lack of interconnection and an integrated strategy, there has been, since the mid- 2000s, an attempt to develop a more cohesive and coordinated policy. An important part of this policy is connected to the activities of Europol, which have come to assume a central role in the coordination of intelligence gathering and analysis of cyber crime. The European Cybercrime Center (EC3), which will become operational within Europol in January 2013, is regarded, in particular, as a focal point of the EU’s fight against this phenomenon. Bearing this background in mind, the present article wishes to understand the role of Europol in the development of a European policy to counter the illegal use of the internet. The article proposes to reach this objective by analyzing, through the theoretical lenses of experimental governance, the evolution of this agency’s activities in the area of cyber crime and cyber security, its positioning as an expert in the field, and the consequences for the way this policy is currently developing and is expected to develop in the near future.

This paper introduces a mechanism for generating a series of rules that characterize the money price relationship for the USA, defined as the relationship between the rate of growth of the money supply and inflation. Monetary component data is used to train a selection of candidate feedforward neural networks. The selected network is mined for rules, expressed in human-readable and machine-executable form. The rule and network accuracy are compared, and expert commentary is made on the readability and reliability of the extracted rule set. The ultimate goal of this research is to produce rules that meaningfully and accurately describe inflation in terms of the monetary component dataset.

To capture the genomic profiles for histone modification, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is combined with next generation sequencing, which is called ChIP-seq. However, enriched regions generated from the ChIP-seq data are only evaluated on the limited knowledge acquired from manually examining the relevant biological literature. This paper proposes a novel framework, which integrates multiple knowledge sources such as biological literature, Gene Ontology, and microarray data. In order to precisely analyze ChIP-seq data for histone modification, knowledge integration is based on a unified probabilistic model. The model is employed to re-rank the enriched regions generated from peak finding algorithms. Through filtering the reranked enriched regions using some predefined threshold, more reliable and precise results could be generated. The combination of the multiple knowledge sources with the peaking finding algorithm produces a new paradigm for ChIP-seq data analysis. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Geography, retailing, and power are institutionally bound up together. Within these, the authors situate their research in Clegg's work on power. Online shopping offers a growing challenge to the apparent hegemony of traditional physical retail stores' format. While novel e-formats appear regularly, blogshops in Singapore are enjoying astonishing success that has taken the large retailers by surprise. Even though there are well-developed theoretical frameworks for understanding the role of institutional entrepreneurs and other major stakeholders in bringing about change and innovation, much less attention has been paid to the role of unorganized, nonstrategic actors-such as blogshops-in catalyzing retail change. The authors explore how blogshops are perceived by consumers and how they challenge the power of other shopping formats. They use Principal Components Analysis to analyze results from a survey of 349 blogshops users. While the results show that blogshops stay true to traditional online shopping attributes, deviations occur on the concept of value. Furthermore, consumer power is counter intuitively found to be strongly present in the areas related to cultural ties, excitement, and search for individualist novelty (as opposed to mass-production), thereby encouraging researchers to think critically about emerging power behavior in media practices.
