Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that toddlers have access to an analog-magnitude number representation that supports numerical reasoning about relatively large numbers. Three-year-olds were presented with subtraction problems in which initial set size and proportions subtracted were systematically varied. Two sets of cookies were presented and then covered The experimenter visibly subtracted cookies from the hidden sets, and the children were asked to choose which of the resulting sets had more. In Experiment 1, performance was above chance when high proportions of objects (3 versus 6) were subtracted from large sets (of 9) and for the subset of older participants (older than 3 years, 5 months; n = 15), performance was also above chance when high proportions (10 versus 20) were subtracted from the very large sets (of 30). In Experiment 2, which was conducted exclusively with older 3-year-olds and incorporated an important methodological control, the pattern of results for the subtraction tasks was replicated In both experiments, success on the tasks was not related to counting ability. The results of these experiments support the hypothesis that young children have access to an analog-magnitude system for representing large approximate quantities, as performance on these subtraction tasks showed a Webers Law signature, and was independent of conventional number knowledge.

Adjuvants are often composed of different constituents that can be divided into two groups based on their primary activity: the delivery system which carries and presents the vaccine antigen to antigen-presenting cells, and the immunostimulator that activates and modulates the ensuing immune response. Herein, we have investigated the importance of the delivery system and in particular its physical characteristics by comparing the delivery properties of two lipids which differ only in the degree of saturation of the acyl chains, rendering the liposomes either rigid (DDA, dimethyldioctadecylammonium) or highly fluid (DODA, dimethyldioleoylammonium) at physiological temperature. We show that these delivery systems are remarkably different in their ability to prime a Th1-directed immune response with the rigid DDA-based liposomes inducing a response more than 100 times higher compared to that obtained with the fluid DODA-based liposomes. Upon injection with a vaccine antigen, DDA-based liposomes form a vaccine depot that results in a continuous attraction of antigen-presenting cells that engulf a high amount of adjuvant and are subsequently efficiently activated as measured by an elevated expression of the co-stimulatory molecules CD40 and CD86. In contrast, the fluid DODA-based liposomes are more rapidly removed from the site of injection resulting in a lower up-regulation of co-stimulatory CD40 and CD86 molecules on adjuvant-positive antigen-presenting cells. Additionally, the vaccine antigen is readily dissociated from the DODA-based liposomes leading to a population of antigen-presenting cells that are antigen-positive but adjuvant-negative and consequently are not activated. These studies demonstrate the importance of studying in vivo characteristics of the vaccine components and furthermore show that physicochemical properties of the delivery system have a major impact on the vaccine-induced immune response. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. This study evaluates the antidiabetic potential of an enzyme-resistant analog, (Val8)GLP-1. The effects of daily administration of a novel dipeptidyl peptidase IV-resistant glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog, (Val8)GLP-1, on glucose tolerance and pancreatic β-cell function were examined in obese-diabetic (ob/ob) mice. Acute intraperitoneal administration of (Val8)GLP-1 (6.25-25 nmol/kg) with glucose increased the insulin response and reduced the glycemic excursion in a dose-dependent manner. The effects of (Val8)GLP-1 were greater and longer lasting than native GLP-1. Once-daily subcutaneous administration of (Val8)GLP-1 (25 nmol/kg) for 21 days reduced plasma glucose concentrations, increased plasma insulin, and reduced body weight more than native GLP-1 without a significant change in daily food intake. Furthermore, (Val8)GLP-1 improved glucose tolerance, reduced the glycemic excursion after feeding, increased the plasma insulin response to glucose and feeding, and improved insulin sensitivity. These effects were consistently greater with (Val8)GLP-1 than with native GLP-1, and both peptides retained or increased their acute efficacy compared with initial administration. (Val8)GLP-1 treatment increased average islet area 1.2-fold without changing the number of islets, resulting in an increased number of larger islets. These data demonstrate that (Val8)GLP-1 is more effective and longer acting than native GLP-1 in obese-diabetic ob/ob mice.

Orthonormal polynomials on the real line {pn (λ)} n=0 ... ∞ satisfy the recurrent relation of the form: λn−1 pn−1 (λ) + αn pn (λ) + λn pn+1 (λ) = λpn (λ), n = 0, 1, 2, . . . , where λn > 0, αn ∈ R, n = 0, 1, . . . ; λ−1 = p−1 = 0, λ ∈ C. In this paper we study systems of polynomials {pn (λ)} n=0 ... ∞ which satisfy the equation: αn−2 pn−2 (λ) + βn−1 pn−1 (λ) + γn pn (λ) + βn pn+1 (λ) + αn pn+2 (λ) = λ2 pn (λ), n = 0, 1, 2, . . . , where αn > 0, βn ∈ C, γn ∈ R, n = 0, 1, 2, . . ., α−1 = α−2 = β−1 = 0, p−1 = p−2 = 0, p0 (λ) = 1, p1 (λ) = cλ + b, c > 0, b ∈ C, λ ∈ C. It is shown that they are orthonormal on the real and the imaginary axes in the complex plane ...

The sensitivity of the tropics to climate change, particularly the amplitude of glacial-to-interglacial changes in sea surface temperature (SST), is one of the great controversies in paleoclimatology. Here we reassess faunal estimates of ice age SSTs, focusing on the problem of no-analog planktonic foraminiferal assemblages in the equatorial oceans that confounds both classical transfer function and modern analog methods. A new calibration strategy developed here, which uses past variability of species to define robust faunal assemblages, solves the no-analog problem and reveals ice age cooling of 5° to 6°C in the equatorial current systems of the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. Classical transfer functions underestimated temperature changes in some areas of the tropical oceans because core-top assemblages misrepresented the ice age faunal assemblages. Our finding is consistent with some geochemical estimates and model predictions of greater ice age cooling in the tropics than was inferred by Climate: Long-Range Investigation, Mapping, and Prediction (CLIMAP) [1981] and thus may help to resolve a long-standing controversy. Our new foraminiferal transfer function suggests that such cooling was limited to the equatorial current systems, however, and supports CLIMAP's inference of stability of the subtropical gyre centers.

A 2-dimensional dynamic analog of squid tentacles was presented. The tentacle analog consists of a multi-cell structure, which can be easily replicated to a large scale. Each cell of the model is a quadrilateral with unit masses at the corners. Each side of the quadrilateral is a spring-damper system in parallel. The spring constants are the controls for the system. The dynamics are subject to the constraint that the area of each quadrilateral must remain constant. The system dynamics was analyzed, and various equilibrium points were found with different controls. Then these equilibrium points were further determined experimentally, demonstrated to be asymptotically stable. A simulation built in MATLAB was used to find the convergence rates under different controls and damping coefficients. Finally, a control scheme was developed and used to drive the system to several configurations observed in real tentacle.
