Rms voltage regulation may be an attractive possibility for controlling power inverters. Combined with a Hall Effect sensor for current control, it keeps its parallel operation capability while increasing its noise immunity, which may lead to a reduction of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Besides, as voltage regulation is designed in DC, a simple PI regulator can provide accurate voltage tracking. Nevertheless, this approach does not lack drawbacks. Its narrow voltage bandwidth makes transients last longer and it increases the voltage THD when feeding non-linear loads, such as rectifying stages. On the other hand, the implementation can fall into offset voltage error. Furthermore, the information of the output voltage phase is hidden for the control as well, making the synchronization of a 3-phase setup not trivial. This paper explains the concept, design and implementation of the whole control scheme, in an on board inverter able to run in parallel and within a 3-phase setup. Special attention is paid to solve the problems foreseen at implementation level: a third analog loop accounts for the offset level is added and a digital algorithm guarantees 3-phase voltage synchronization.

ABSTRACT The search of new forms of modernity became the main theme of the works developed by Leslie Martin, Colin St. John Wilson and James Stirling between 1955 and 1970. Belonging to the sensitivity emerged in postwar Britain, their deep critical sense encourages a renewed interpretation of some principles of Modern Movement and a reflection about the modification or the use of forms that are rooted in cultural tradition. This research is divided into four themes widely discussed and which has articulated part of modern review along the second half of the twentieth century: » Abstraction and realism » Review of Functionalism » The reconsideration of the formal archetypes » The relationship between form and urban context are shown as critical base for the selected works. The trend toward realism arose in response to the will of universality (and objectivity) that represented the abstract language, just as the review of Functionalism aimed to overcome the consideration of architecture's work as rational product of its function and technology. The reconsideration of traditional archetypes, in turn, shows a concern for the meaning of the cultural forms, a matter equally decisive in the renewed attention to the structure of the historical city. These themes evidence an interest to extend modern architecture, without thereby the recognition of the past forms imply a distancing regarding the future. The idea of review also becomes strategy in finding new answers. If some principles of the Modern Movement arose in reaction to Beaux-Arts classicism which preceded it, the analyzed proposals show the operational validity of this approach to create works of a strong modernity. Their interest, therefore, lies not only in its consideration as study cases that broaden our knowledge of a certain period, but as a recent tradition which serves as a critic basis for the current practice.

Margaret Bush Wilson was a woman of highly exceptional stature. Bush accomplished much in her life; the most prominent being the first female on the N.A.A.C.P. national board of Directors. Much of her career consisted of civil rights and urban development. Before Mrs. Bush focused on her civil rights path, she was valedictorian of her graduating high school class. After completing her high school career, she began to study abroad, traveling to over six countries. These included: England, France, Ceylon, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands and her most extraordinary visit to India. Here Margaret met and spoke with Mahatma Gandhi which fueled her passion of the civil rights movement in the United States. Mrs. Bush pursued a law degree at Lincoln University Law School after completing her Bachelor’s at Talladega University. On top of her extraordinary accomplishments, Margaret Bush possessed the unique quality of appearing 10 years younger than her real age, reflecting her strong spirit and compassion towards humanity.

Yvonne Wilson is a woman of achievement, accomplishment, and ambition. It all started when she enrolled in Lincoln University; the only public institution for higher education in Missouri that admitted African Americans. She later went on to become a teacher, principal and systems director in the Kansas City School District. Mrs. Wilson was involved in many civic/social activities including the Metropolitan Community Colleges and the Bruce Watkins Cultural Heritage Center. She had many accomplishments including her positions as the President of Lincoln University Board of Curators and the first African American President of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals. Finally, one of her top accomplishments was being appointed to the Missouri House of Representatives.

Drawing on the work of Wendell Berry, among others, allows us to see through claims that science has on limits (scientism). Berry shows what follies scientism generates and provides his own guidelines to what the limits of science are or ought to be.

The delivery of copper to specific sites within the cell is mediated by distinct intracellular carrier proteins termed copper chaperones. Previous studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggested that the human copper chaperone HAH1 may play a role in copper trafficking to the secretory pathway of the cell. In this current study, HAH1 was detected in lysates from multiple human cell lines and tissues as a single-chain protein distributed throughout the cytoplasm and nucleus. Studies with a glutathione S-transferase-HAH1 fusion protein demonstrated direct protein–protein interaction between HAH1 and the Wilson disease protein, which required the cysteine copper ligands in the amino terminus of HAH1. Consistent with these in vitro observations, coimmunoprecipitation experiments revealed that HAH1 interacts with both the Wilson and Menkes proteins in vivo and that this interaction depends on available copper. When these studies were repeated utilizing three disease-associated mutations in the amino terminus of the Wilson protein, a marked diminution in HAH1 interaction was observed, suggesting that impaired copper delivery by HAH1 constitutes the molecular basis of Wilson disease in patients harboring these mutations. Taken together, these data provide a mechanism for the function of HAH1 as a copper chaperone in mammalian cells and demonstrate that this protein is essential for copper homeostasis.

Several proteins secreted by enteric bacteria are thought to contribute to virulence by disturbing the signal transduction of infected cells. Here, we report that SopB, a protein secreted by Salmonella dublin, has sequence homology to mammalian inositol polyphosphate 4-phosphatases and that recombinant SopB has inositol phosphate phosphatase activity in vitro. SopB hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate, an inhibitor of Ca2+-dependent chloride secretion. In addition, SopB hydrolyzes inositol 1,3,4,5,6 pentakisphosphate to yield inositol 1,4,5,6-tetrakisphosphate, a signaling molecule that increases chloride secretion indirectly by antagonizing the inhibition of chloride secretion by phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate [Eckmann, L., Rudolf, M. T., Ptasznik, A., Schultz, C., Jiang, T., Wolfson, N., Tsien, R., Fierer, J., Shears, S. B., Kagnoff, M. F., et al. (1997) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 94, 14456–14460]. Mutation of a conserved cysteine that abolishes phosphatase activity of SopB results in a mutant strain, S. dublin SB c/s, with decreased ability to induce fluid secretion in infected calf intestine loops. Moreover, HeLa cells infected with S. dublin SB c/s do not accumulate high levels of inositol 1,4,5,6-tetrakisphosphate that are characteristic of wild-type S. dublin-infected cells. Therefore, SopB mediates virulence by interdicting inositol phosphate signaling pathways.

The end of a telomeric DNA sequence isolated from a polytene chromosome of a hypotrichous ciliate folds back and hybridizes with downstream telomeric sequence to form a t loop that is stable in the absence of protein and DNA cross-linking. The single-stranded, telomeric DNA sequence at the end of a macronuclear molecule does not form a t loop but, instead, is complexed with a heterodimeric, telomere-binding protein. Thus, two mechanisms for capping the ends of DNA molecules are used in the same cell.

Cysteine mutagenesis and site-directed spin labeling in the C-terminal region of rhodopsin have been used to probe the local structure and proximity of that region to the cytoplasmic loops. Each of the native amino acids in the sequence T335–T340 was replaced with Cys, one at a time. The sulfhydryl groups of all mutants reacted rapidly with the sulfhydryl reagent 4,4′-dithiodipyridine, which indicated a high degree of solvent accessibility. Furthermore, to probe the proximity relationships, a series of double Cys mutants was constructed. One Cys in all sets was at position 338 and the other was at a position in the sequence S240–V250 in the EF interhelical loop, at position 65 in the AB interhelical loop, or at position 140 in the CD interhelical loop. In the dark state, no significant disulfide formation was observed between C338 and C65 or C140 under the conditions used, whereas a relatively rapid disulfide formation was observed between C338 and C242 or C245. Spin labels in the double Cys mutants showed the strongest magnetic interactions between the nitroxides attached to C338 and C245 or C246. Light activation of the double mutant T242C/S338C resulted in slower disulfide formation, whereas interactions between nitroxides at C338 and C245 or C246 decreased. These results suggest the proximity of the C-terminal residue C338 to residues located on the outer face of a cytoplasmic helical extension of the F helix with an apparent increase of distance upon photoactivation.
