A high-resolution record of sea-level change spanning the past 1000 years is derived from foraminiferal and chronological analyses of a 2m thick salt-marsh peat sequence at Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia, Canada. Former mean tide level positions are reconstructed with a precision of +/- 0.055 in using a transfer function derived from distributions of modern salt-marsh foraminifera. Our age model for the core section older than 300 years is based on 19 AMS C-14 ages and takes into account the individual probability distributions of calibrated radiocarbon ages. The past 300 years is dated by pollen and the isotopes Pb-206, Pb-207, Pb-210, Cs-137 and Am-241. Between AD 1000 and AD 1800, relative sea level rose at a mean rate of 17cm per century. Apparent pre-industrial rises of sea level dated at AD 1500-1550 and AD 1700-1800 cannot be clearly distinguished when radiocarbon age errors are taken into account. Furthermore, they may be an artefact of fluctuations in atmospheric C-14 production. In the 19th century sea level rose at a mean rate of 1.6mm/yr. Between AD 1900 and AD 1920, sea-level rise accelerated to the modern mean rate of 3.2mm/yr. This acceleration corresponds in time with global temperature rise and may therefore be associated with recent global warming. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pigeonpea is grown in wide range of cropping systems and environments, both in East Africa and internationally. An important feature of adaptation to these diverse systems and environments is the timing of flowering and maturity. Most traditional cultivars grown in Tanzania are medium to late flowering types (> 150 days), although extra-early flowering cultivars are now available. The aim of the present investigation was to measure biomass (BY) and seed (SY) yield of a set of phenologically diverse cultivars to determine their adaptation to contrasting environments in Tanzania. Ten cultivars, from extra-early (60 days) to late (> 180 days) flowering, were planted at six locations varying in mean temperature, photoperiod and rainfall. Days to flowering (DTF) and maturity, and above-ground BY and SY at maturity, were measured. A stress index (ETr:ETm ratio, 100 = no stress) was computed for each site. Rainfall and the stress index at the different sites varied from 322 to 1297 mm and 57 to 89, respectively. Among cultivars, DTF varied from 55 to 320 days, the stress index from 3 to 98, BY from 700 to 25,000 kg ha(-1), and SY from 0 to 4000 kg ha(-1). The highest yielding environment was at Selian, where mean temperatures were favourable (19 degrees C) and no stress occurred. At all sites there was an optimum DTF, which for SY varied from < 100 to 150 days. The best adapted cultivars were ICP 7035, ICPL 90094, Kat 50 and QP37, which were all medium flowering (c. 150 day) types. Extra-early cultivars such as ICPL 86005 also showed considerable potential, especially in short-season environments. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this work was to study the effects of drying methods and conditions (i.e., ambient drying, hot air drying at 40 degrees C, vacuum drying and low-pressure superheated steam drying within the temperature range of 70-90 degrees C at an absolute pressure of 10 kPa) as well as the concentration of galangal extract on the antimicrobial activity of edible chitosan films against Staphylococcus aureus. Galangal extract was added to the film forming solution as a natural antimicrobial agent in the concentration range of 0.3-0.9 g/100 g. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and swelling of the films were also evaluated to investigate interaction between chitosan and the galangal extract. The antimicrobial activity of the films was evaluated by the disc diffusion and viable cell count method, while the morphology of bacteria treated with the antimicrobial films was observed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The antimicrobial activity, swelling and functional group interaction of the antimicrobial films were found to be affected by the drying methods and conditions as well as the concentration of the galangal extract. The electron microscopic observations revealed that cell wall and cell membrane of S. aureus treated by the antimicrobial films were significantly damaged. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The present study evaluated the immunogenicity of new malaria vaccine formulations based on the 19 kDa C-terminal fragment of Plasmodium vivax Merozoite Surface Protein-1 (MSP1(19)) and the Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium flagellin (FIiC), a Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) agonist. FHC was used as an adjuvant either admixed or genetically linked to the P. vivax MSP1(19) and administered to C57BL/6 mice via parenteral (s.c.) or mucosal (i.n.) routes. The recombinant fusion protein preserved MSP1(19) epitopes recognized by Sera collected from P. vivax infected humans and TLR5 agonist activity. Mice parenterally immunized with recombinant P vivax MSPI 19 in the presence of FliC, either admixed or genetically linked, elicited strong and long-lasting MSP1 (19)-specific systemic antibody responses with a prevailing IgG1 subclass response. Incorporation of another TLR agonist, CpG ODN 1826, resulted in a more balanced response, as evaluated by the IgG1/IgG2c ratio, and higher cell-mediated immune response measured by interferon-gamma secretion. Finally, we show that MSPI 19-specific antibodies recognized the native protein expressed on the surface of P. vivax parasites harvested from infected humans. The present report proposes a new class of malaria vaccine formulation based on the use of malaria antigens and the innate immunity agonist FliC. it contains intrinsic adjuvant properties and enhanced ability to induce specific humoral and cellular immune responses when administered alone or in combination with other adjuvants. In this paper a new parametric method to deal with discrepant experimental results is developed. The method is based on the fit of a probability density function to the data. This paper also compares the characteristics of different methods used to deduce recommended values and uncertainties from a discrepant set of experimental data. The methods are applied to the (137)Cs and (90)Sr published half-lives and special emphasis is given to the deduced confidence intervals. The obtained results are analyzed considering two fundamental properties expected from an experimental result: the probability content of confidence intervals and the statistical consistency between different recommended values. The recommended values and uncertainties for the (137)Cs and (90)Sr half-lives are 10,984 (24) days and 10,523 (70) days, respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

O angico-de-bezerro (Piptadenia moniliformis Benth.)
