An investigation of the parameters as aniline: MnO(2) and temperature on synthesis of polyaniline/MnO(2) composites was performed. The composites were chemically prepared in H(2)SO(4) media using different aniline: MnO(2) ratios at 0 degrees C. After the ratio optimization, the syntheses were performed at 20 degrees C. The polyaniline/MnO(2) composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible, near infrared and infrared spectroscopic techniques. Composites obtained with a uniform, homogeneous and thicker coating of polyaniline films under oxide was considered as the best condition for synthesis.

This paper describes the use of a dental amalgam electrode (DAE) to evaluate the electrochemical behaviour and to develop an electroanalytical procedure for determination of diquat herbicide in natural water and potato samples. The work was based on the square wave voltammetry responses of diquat, which presented two well-defined and reversible reduction peaks, at -0.56 V (peak 1) and -1.00V (peak 2). The experimental and voltammetric parameters were optimised, and the analytical curves were constructed and compared to similar curves performed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric detector (HPLC/UV-vis). The responses were directly proportional to diquat concentration in a large interval of concentration, and the calculated detection limits were very similar, around 10 mu g L(-1) (10 ppb) for voltammetric and chromatographic experiments. These values were lower than the maximum residue limit established for natural water by the Brazilian Environmental Agency. The recovery percentages in pure electrolyte, natural water and potato samples showed values from 70% to 130%, demonstrating that the voltammetric methodology proposed is suitable for determining any contamination by diquat in different samples, minimising the toxic residues due to the use of liquid mercury or the adsorptive process relative to use of other solid surfaces. Polymer films, deposited from acetylene and argon plasma mixtures, were bombarded with 150 keV He+ ions, varying the fluence, Phi, from 10(18) to 10(21) ions/m(2). Molecular structure and optical gap of the samples were investigated by infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies, respectively. Two-point probe was employed to determine the electrical resistivity while hardness was measured by nanoindentation technique. It was verified modification of the molecular structure and composition of the films. There was loss of H and increment in the concentration of unsaturated carbon bonds with Phi. Optical gap and electrical resistivity decreased while hardness increased with Phi. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of chain crosslinking and unsaturation. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Benzene plasma polymer films were bombarded with Ar ions by plasma immersion ion implantation. The treatments were performed using argon pressure of 3 Pa and 70 W of applied power. The substrate holder was polarized with high voltage negative pulses (25 kV, 3 Hz). Exposure time to the immersion plasma, t, was varied from 0 to 9000 s. Optical gap and chemical composition of the samples were determined by ultraviolet-visible and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopies, respectively. Film wettability was investigated by the contact angle between a water drop and the film surface. Nanoindentation technique was employed in the hardness measurements. It was observed growth in carbon and oxygen concentrations while there was decrease in the concentration of H atoms with increasing t. Furthermore, film hardness and wettability increased and the optical gap decreased with t. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of the chain crosslinking and unsaturation. Sustainable development is a major challenge in the oil industry and has aroused growing interest in research to obtain materials from renewable sources. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a polysaccharide derived from cellulose and becomes attractive because it is water-soluble, renewable, biodegradable and inexpensive, as well as may be chemically modified to gain new properties. Among the derivatives of carboxymethylcellulose, systems have been developed to induce stimuli-responsive properties and extend the applicability of multiple-responsive materials. Although these new materials have been the subject of study, understanding of their physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, solubility and particle size as a function of pH and temperature, is still very limited. This study describes systems of physical blends and copolymers based on carboxymethylcellulose and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), with different feed percentage compositions of the reaction (25CMC, 50CMC e 75CMC), in aqueous solution. The chemical structure of the polymers was investigated by infrared and CHN elementary analysis. The physical blends were analyzed by rheology and the copolymers by UV-visible spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential. CMC and copolymer were assessed as scale inhibitors of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) using dynamic tube blocking tests and chemical compatibility tests, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermothickening behavior was observed for the 50 % CMC_50 % PNIPAM and 25 % CMC_75 % PNIPAM physical blends in aqueous solution at concentrations of 6 and 2 g/L, respectively, depending on polymer concentration and composition. For the copolymers, the increase in temperature and amount of PNIPAM favored polymer-polymer interactions through hydrophobic groups, resulting in increased turbidity of polymer solutions. Particle size decreased with the rise in copolymer PNIPAM content as a function of pH (3-12), at 25 °C. Larger amounts of CMC result in a stronger effect of pH on particle size, indicating pH-responsive behavior. Thus, 25CMC was not affected by the change in pH, exhibiting similar behavior to PNIPAM. In addition, the presence of acidic or basic additives influenced particle size, which was smaller in the presence of the additives than in distilled water. The results of zeta potential also showed greater variation for polymers in distilled water than in the presence of acids and bases. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM determined by DLS corroborated the value obtained by UV-visible spectroscopy. SAXS data for PNIPAM and 50CMC indicated phase transition when the temperature increased from 32 to 34 °C. A reduction in or absence of electrostatic properties was observed as a function of increased PNIPAM in copolymer composition. Assessment of samples as scale inhibitors showed that CMC performed better than the copolymers. This was attributed to the higher charge density present in CMC. The SEM micrographs confirmed morphological changes in the CaCO3 crystals, demonstrating the scale inhibiting potential of these polymers

Er3+ ions were added to the PbTiO3 network using the polymeric precursor method to characterize the order-disorder transformation found in this material by means of experimental and theoretical approach. The disordered and ordered material structures were studied by photoluminescence measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and U-V-visible spectroscopy. The Er3+ ions served as a marker to identify the structural short-range order beginning in the PbTiO3 matrix. From photoluminescence results it was concluded that disordered PbTiO3 powders have a certain short range order in the network that are undetected by XRD measurements. The electronic structures were calculated by the ab initio periodic method in DFT level with the non-local B3LYP hybrid approximation for the Ti atom site interpretation using density of states (DOS) results. This analysis enabled understanding that Ti atom sphere coordination can create possible states for radioactive return and trap of electron-holes pair. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Changes occurring in absorption coefficients when glasses in the SbPO4-WO3 binary system were irradiated by light, at the edge of the absorption band, were measured in real time. These glasses present good thermal and optical properties and photoinduced changes in the absorption coefficients are reversible by heat treatment around 150 degrees C. Subsequent recording/erasing cycles could be made without sample degradation. The sensitivity of the induced optical changes was studied for different wavelengths, light powers and energy of light dose exposures, and for different compositions of the glasses. The changes in the absorption coefficients of the glass samples were accompanied by a color change from yellow to blue, and were also characterized by visible spectroscopy. The color changes occurred through the entire volume of the glass (similar to 2 mm thickness) for the Ar-ion laser lines at the edge of the absorption band. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. This work reports the preparation and characterization of (SnO2) thin films doped with 7 mol% Sb2O3. The films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method, and deposited by spin-coating, all of them were deposited on amorphous silica substrate. Then, we have studied the thickness effect on the microstrutural, optical and electric properties of these samples. The microstructural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The electrical resistivity measurements were obtained by the van der Pauw four-probe method. UV-visible spectroscopy and ellipsometry were carried out for the optical characterization. The films present nanometric grains in the order of 13 nm, and low roughness. The electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of the film thickness and the smallest measured value was 6.5 x 10(-3) Omega cm for the 988 nm thick film. The samples displayed a high transmittance value of 80% in the visible region. The obtained results show that the polymeric precursor method is effective for the TCOs manufacturing.

The low-weight Pd(II) coordination polymers [(N(3))(HL)Pd {Pd(3)(mu-N(3))(mu-L)(5)}10(mu-L)(2)Pd(L)(HL)]{L = Pz(-) (1); mPz(-) (2), IPz(-)(3)} and [(N(3))(HPz)Pd{Pd(6)(mu-N(3))(2)(mu-PZ)(5)(mu-L)(5)}(10)(mu-L)(2)Pd(Pz)(HPz)] {L = mPz(-) (4), dmPz(-) (5); IPz(-) (6)} {L = pyrazolate (Pz(-)), 4-methylpyrazolate(mPz(-)), 4-iodopyrazo late (IPz(-)), 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate (dmPz(-))} have been prepared in this work. IR spectra clearly indicated the exobidentate nature of pyrazolato ligands as well the end-on coordination mode of the azido group. The molecular weight determinations by osmometry indicated that the species have a low degree of polymerization (n = 10). NMR experiments showed two pyrazolate environments in a 2:1 ratio, being assigned to the six-membered ring Pd(mu-L)(2)Pd and the Pd(mu-N(3))(mu-L)Pd metallocycle, respectively. UV-visible spectroscopy gave further evidences for the oligomeric structures of 1-6. Some alternative structures for the isostructural polymers have been suggested. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
