The down conversion of radio frequency components around the harmonics of the local oscillator (LO), and its impact on the accuracy of white space detection using integrated spectrum sensors, is studied. We propose an algorithm to mitigate the impact of harmonic downconversion by utilizing multiple parallel downconverters in the system architecture. The proposed algorithm is validated on a test-board using commercially available integrated circuits and a test-chip implemented in a 130-nm CMOS technology. The measured data show that the impact of the harmonic downconversion is closely related to the LO characteristics, and that much of it can be mitigated by the proposed technique.

The demand for variety of products and the shorter time to market is encouraging designers to adopt computer aided concept generation techniques. One such technique is being explored here. The present work makes an attempt towards synthesis of concepts for sensors using physical laws and effects as building blocks. A database of building blocks based upon the SAPPhIRE-lite model of causality is maintained. It uses composition to explore the solution space. The algorithm has been implemented in a web based tool. The tool generates two types of sensor designs: direct sensing designs and feedback sensing designs. According to the literature, synthesis using building blocks often lead to vague solutions principles. The current work tries to avoid uninteresting solutions by using some heuristics. A particularly novel outcome of the work described here is the generation of feedback based solutions, something not generated automatically before. A number of patent violations were observed with the set of generated concepts; thus emphasizing some amount of novelty in the designs.

Using coherent light interrogating a turbid object perturbed by a focused ultrasound (US) beam, we demonstrate localized measurement of dynamics in the focal region, termed the region-of-interest (ROI), from the decay of the modulation in intensity autocorrelation of light. When the ROI contains a pipe flow, the decay is shown to be sensitive to the average flow velocity from which the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of the scattering centers in the flow can be estimated. While the MSD estimated is seen to be an order of magnitude higher than that obtainable through the usual diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) without the US, it is seen to be more accurate as verified by the volume flow estimated from it. It is further observed that, whereas the MSD from the localized measurement grows with time as tau(alpha) with alpha approximate to 1.65, without using the US, a is seen to be much less. Moreover, with the local measurement, this super-diffusive nature of the pipe flow is seen to persist longer, i.e., over a wider range of initial tau, than with the unassisted DWS. The reason for the super-diffusivity of flow, i.e., alpha < 2, in the ROI is the presence of a fluctuating (thermodynamically nonequilibrium) component in the dynamics induced by the US forcing. Beyond this initial range, both methods measure MSDs that rise linearly with time, indicating that ballistic and near-ballistic photons hardly capture anything beyond the background Brownian motion. Purpose: A prior image based temporally constrained reconstruction ( PITCR) algorithm was developed for obtaining accurate temperature maps having better volume coverage, and spatial, and temporal resolution than other algorithms for highly undersampled data in magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry. Methods: The proposed PITCR approach is an algorithm that gives weight to the prior image and performs accurate reconstruction in a dynamic imaging environment. The PITCR method is compared with the temporally constrained reconstruction (TCR) algorithm using pork muscle data. Results: The PITCR method provides superior performance compared to the TCR approach with highly undersampled data. The proposed approach is computationally expensive compared to the TCR approach, but this could be overcome by the advantage of reconstructing with fewer measurements. In the case of reconstruction of temperature maps from 16% of fully sampled data, the PITCR approach was 1.57x slower compared to the TCR approach, while the root mean square error using PITCR is 0.784 compared to 2.815 with the TCR scheme. Conclusions: The PITCR approach is able to perform more accurate reconstructions of temperature maps compared to the TCR approach with highly undersampled data in MR guided high intensity focused ultrasound. Ready-to-use screen printed glucose sensors are fabricated using Prussian Blue (PB) and Cobalt Phthalocyanine (CoPC) mediated carbon inks as working electrodes. The reference and counter electrodes are screen printed using silver/silver chloride and graphitic carbon paste respectively. The screen printed reference electrodes (internal reference electrode (IRE)) are found to be stable for more than 60 minutes when examined with saturated calomel electrode. Optimal operating voltage for PB and CoPC screen printed sensors are determined by hydrodynamic voltammetric technique. Glucose oxidase is immobilized on the working electrodes by cross-linking method. PB mediated glucose sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 5.60 mA cm(-2)/mM for the range, 10 to 1000 mu M. Sensitivity of CoPC mediated glucose sensor is found to be 5.224 mu A cm(-2)/mM and amperometeric response is linear for the range, 100 to 1500 mu M. Interference studies on the fabricated glucose sensors are conducted with species like uric acid and ascorbic acid. PB mediated sensors showed a completely interference-free behavior. The sensing characteristics of PB mediated glucose sensors are also studied in diluted human serum samples and the results are compared with the values obtained through standard clinical method. The co-efficient of variation is found to be less than 5%. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

The thermal properties of a micro-electromechanical system sensor were analysed by a novel digital moire method. A double-layer micro-cantilever sensor (60 mu m long, 10 mu m width and 2 mu dm thick) was prepared by focused ion beam milling. A grating with frequency of 5000 lines mm- I was etched on the cantilever. The sensor was placed into a scanning electron microscope system with a high temperature device. The observation and recording of the thermal deformation of the grating were realised in real-time as the temperature rose from room temperature to 300 degrees C at intervals of 50 degrees C. Digital moire was generated by interference of the deformed grating and a digital virtual grating. The thermal properties including strain distribution of the sensor and the linear expansion coefficient of polysilicon were accurately measured by the phase-shifted moire patterns.

We report the investigation of biotin-streptavidin binding interactions using microcantilever sensors. A symmetric cantilever construction is employed to minimize the effects of thermal drift and the control of surface chemistry on the backside of the cantilever is demonstrated to reduce the effects of non-specific binding interactions on the cantilever. Three structurally different biotin modified cantilever surfaces are used as a model system to study the binding interaction with streptavidin. The cantilever response to the binding of streptavidin on these biotin sensing monolayers is compared. The lowest detection limit of streptavidin using biotin-HPDP is found to be between 1 and 10 nM limited by the optical measurement setup. Surface characterization using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and high-resolution atomic force microscope (AFM) is used to benchmark the cantilever sensor response. In addition, the QCM and AFM studies reveal that the surface density of bound streptavidin on biotin modified surfaces was low, thereby implying that effects other than steric hindrance are responsible for defining cantilever response. 3D thermo-electro-mechanical device simulations are presented of a novel fully CMOS-compatible MOSFET gas sensor operating in a SOI membrane. A comprehensive stress analysis of a Si-SiO2-based multilayer membrane has been performed to ensure a high degree of mechanical reliability at a high operating temperature (e.g. up to 400°C). Moreover, optimisation of the layout dimensions of the SOI membrane, in particular the aspect ratio between the membrane length and membrane thickness, has been carried out to find the best trade-off between minimal device power consumption and acceptable mechanical stress.

This paper describes coupled-effect simulations of smart micro gas-sensors based on standard BiCMOS technology. The smart sensor features very low power consumption, high sensitivity and potential low fabrication cost achieved through full CMOS integration. For the first time the micro heaters are made of active CMOS elements (i.e. MOSFET transistors) and embedded in a thin SOI membrane consisting of Si and SiO2 thin layers. Micro gas-sensors such as chemoresistive, microcalorimeteric and Pd/polymer gate FET sensors can be made using this technology. Full numerical analyses including 3D electro-thermo-mechanical simulations, in particular stress and deflection studies on the SOI membranes are presented. The transducer circuit design and the post-CMOS fabrication process, which includes single sided back-etching, are also reported.

This paper describes a new generation of integrated solid-state gas-sensors embedded in SOI micro-hotplates. The micro-hotplates lie on a SOI membrane and consist of MOSFET heaters that elevate the operating temperature, through self-heating, of a gas sensitive material. These sensors are fully compatible with SOI CMOS or BiCMOS technologies, offer ultra-low power consumption (under 100 mW), high sensitivity, low noise, low unit cost, reproducibility and reliability through the use of on-chip integration. In addition, the new integrated sensors offer a nearly uniform temperature distribution over the active area at its operating temperatures at up to about 300-350°C. This makes SOI-based gas-sensing devices particularly attractive for use in handheld battery-operated gas monitors. This paper reports on the design of a chemo-resistive gas sensor and proposes for the first time an intelligent SOI membrane microcalorimeter using active micro-FET heaters and temperature sensors. A comprehensive set of numerical and analogue simulations is also presented including complex 2D and 3D electro-thermal numerical analyses. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
