Political elites in federalized countries: the case of Spain (1980-2005)

This paper explores the social profile of the regional elite that has emerged in Spain since the federalization of the State. For the first time, researchers present data about crucial variables like gender, place of birth, age, education, and profession. They make interregional comparisons, and try to explain some unexpected findings like the behavior of political elites in some regions like Catalonia. The authors compare also the social profile of MPs of the two largest parties.

Emergency department use by oldest-old patients from 2005 to 2010 in a Swiss university hospital.

BACKGROUND: Aging of the population in all western countries will challenge Emergency Departments (ED) as old patients visit these health services more frequently and present with special needs. The aim of this study is to describe the trend in ED visits by patients aged 85 years and over between 2005 and 2010, and to compare their service use to that of patients aged 65-84 years during this period and to investigate the evolution of these comparisons over time. METHODS: Data considered were all ED visits to the University of Lausanne Medical Center (CHUV), a tertiary Swiss teaching hospital, between 2005 and 2010 by patients aged 65 years and over (65+ years). ED visit characteristics were described according to age group and year. Incidence rates of ED visits and length of ED stay were calculated. RESULTS: Between 2005 and 2010, ED visits by patients aged 65 years and over increased by 26% overall, and by 46% among those aged 85 years and over (85+ years). Estimated ED visit incidence rate for persons aged 85+ years old was twice as high as for persons aged 65-84 years. Compared to patients aged 65-84 years, those aged 85+ years were more likely to be hospitalized and have a longer ED stay. This latter difference increased over time between 2005 and 2010. CONCLUSIONS: Oldest-old patients are increasingly using ED services. These services need to adapt their care delivery processes to meet the needs of a rising number of these complex, multimorbid and vulnerable patients.

Reclutamiento y carrera ministerial de los ministros en España (1976-2005)

Este trabajo presenta la anatomía del reclutamiento y del paso por el gobierno de la elite ministerial española de la democracia (1977-2004), en un contexto de cambio, marcado por la democratización, el establecimiento de un sistema parlamentario de partidos y la descentralización política y territorial del gobierno. El análisis de la elite ministerial se ha centrado en la selección de los ministros (carrera política y afiliación de partido) y en su periplo por el gobierno (carrera ministerial, definida por tres dimensiones: tiempo, itinerario y posición).

En esta nota se construyen algunos indicadores de gasto educativo por estudiante para las distintas comunidades autónomas a partir de la información suministrada en diversas publicaciones del Ministerio de Educación y del INE para el año 2005.

Indicadores de desempeño educativo regional: metodología y resultados para los cursos 2005-06 a 2007-08

En esta nota se recopilan y/o construyen algunos indicadores de desempeño para los sistemas educativos de las regiones españolas durante los cursos 2005-06 a 2007-08 a partir de la información suministrada por diversas publicaciones del Ministerio de Educación. Aunque el trabajo se concentra en los niveles educativos no universitarios, se ofrecen también algunos resultados preliminares a nivel universitario.

La traducció de llibres japonesos a Espanya : revisió bibliogràfica de textos i paratextos (1930-2005)

Aquesta investigació és un primer pas per a una anàlisi del paper de la traducció en la construcció de la imatge de l'Altre japonès. Aquesta tesina consta d'un corpus de literatura japonesa traduïda a Espanya entre el 1930 i el 2005, incloent els gèneres d'assaig i tècnico-científics, i una anàlisi de les dades principalment quantitativa. S'analitza el tipus de traducció (directa o indirecta) de forma diacrònica i per gèneres, i també la selecció temàtica per observar si es tendeix a l'"exotisme", així com la utilitat dels paratextos per a aconseguir informació sobre el procés traductor
