The objective of the investigation was the development of a test that would readily identify the potential of an aggregate to cause D-cracking because of its susceptivity to critical saturation. A Press-Ur-Meter was modified by replacing the air chamber with a one-inch diameter plastic tube calibrated in milli-. It was concluded that the pore index was sufficiently reliable to determine the D-cracking potential of limestone aggregates in all but a few cases where marginal results were obtained. Consistently poor or good results were always in agreement with established service records or concrete durability testing. In those instances where marginal results are obtained, the results of concrete durability testing should be considered when making the final determination of the D-cracking susceptibility of the aggregate in question. The following applications for the pore index test have been recommended for consideration: concrete durability testing be discontinued in the evaluation process of new aggregate sources with pore index results between 0-20 (Class 2 durability) and over 35 (Class 1) durability; composite aggregates with intermediate pore index results of 20-35 be tested on each stone type to facilitate the possible removal of low durability stone from the production process; and additional investigation should be made to evaluate the possibility of using the test to monitor and upgrade the acceptance of aggregate from sources associated with D-cracking.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) through the Highway Division is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of roadways that will provide a high level of serviceability to the motorist. First, the motorist expects to be able to get where he wants to go, but now he also demands a minimum level of comfort. In the construction of new roadways, the public is quick to express dissatisfaction with rough pavements. The Highway Division of the Iowa DOT (formerly Iowa State Highway Commission) has a specification which requires a "smooth-riding surface". For over 40 years, new portland cement concrete (pcc) pavement has been checked with a 10-foot rolling straightedge. The contractor is required to grind, saw or mill off all high spots that deviate more than 1/8" from the 10-foot straight line. Unfortunately, there are instances where a roadway that will meet the above criteria does not provide a "smooth-riding surface". The roadway may have monger undulations (swales) that result in an undesirable ride. The objective of this project was to develop a repeatable, reliable time stable, lightweight test unit to measure the riding quality of pcc pavement at normal highway speed the day after construction.

The primary objectives of this research project were: 1. Determine and recommend solutions for problems relating to shipping, storing and batching of fly ash. 2. Establish a procedure for batching, mixing and placing uniform concrete with specified air content and consistency. 3. Demonstrate that concrete of comparable quality can be produced.

The main consideration for base construction under the pavement, in the design of Iowa's interstate, was structural capacity. The material was dense graded with the aim of supporting the pavement and distributing the load as it is transferred to the underlying grade. The drainage characteristics of the base was apparently not given adequate consideration. On jointed portland cement concrete pavement, the water that is trapped immediately beneath the pavement causes severe problems. The traffic causes rapid movement of the water resulting in the hydraulic pressures or "pumping" (movement and redeposit of base fine material), further resulting in faulting between individual slabs. The objective of this evaluation is to determine if longitudinal subdrains are effective in preventing or reducing pumping, faulting and related deterioration. Results suggest that, based upon the flow from the outlets observed during periodic checks and evidence of water flow at the outlets, it appears that to date the subdrains are effective in draining the subbase and subgrade. Because of the limited data available at this time, however, the pavement condition and faulting results are inconclusive.

A Research Project involving two, three, four and five inches of bonded Portland Cement Concrete Overlay on a 1.3 mile Portland Cement Concrete pavement was conducted in Clayton County, Iowa, during September, 1977, centering on the following objectives: 1. Determine the mixing and proportioning procedures required in using a conventional, central mix proportioning plant to produce a dense Portland Cement Concrete mixture using standard mixes with super-water reducing admixtures; 2. Determine the economics, longevity and maintenance performance of a bonded, thin-lift, non-reinforced Portland Cement Concrete resurfacing course using conventional procedures, equipment and concrete paving mixtures both with and without super-water reducing admixtures; 3. Determine if an adequate bond between the existing pavement and an overlay of thin-lift, dense, non-reinforced Portland Cement Concrete can be obtained with only special surface cleaning and no surface removal or grinding.

As part of the overall research program of evaluating asphalt emulsion slurry seal as a pavement maintenance material, 31 duplicate 500-ft test sections were constructed on U.S. 6 between Adel and Waukee in Dallas County during September and October of 1978. These test sections included combinations of eight aggregates, two gradings, three asphalt emulsions, two mineral fillers, and a range of emulsion contents determined by laboratory mix designs. The emulsion contents of the test sections varied from 10.3% for Section 7A (Ferguson coarse) to 32.9% for Section 31A (lightweight aggregate). The post-construction performance evaluation of the test sections, consisting primarily of the friction tests and surface appearance observations, was conducted at different time intervals up to 24 months after construction. At the 24-month final evaluation, most of the test sections had carried a total of 1.4 million vehicles.

The earliest overall comprehensive work on the use of fly ash in concrete was reported by Davis and Associates of the University of California in 1937. Since that time, there have been numerous applications of the use and varying propertions of fly ash in portland cement concrete mixes. Fly ash is a pozzolanic powdery by-product of the coal combustion process which is recovered from flue gases and is, generally associated with electric power generating plants. Environmental regulations enacted in recent years have required that fly ash be removed from the flue gases to maintain clean air standards. This has resulted in an increased volume of high quality fly ash that is considered a waste product or a by-product that can be utilized in products such as portland cement concrete. There are several sources of the high quality fly ash located in Iowa currently producing a combined total of 281,000 tons of material annually.

Since the beginning of channel straightening at the turn of the century, the streams of western Iowa have degraded 1.5 to 5 times their original depth. This vertical degradation is often accompanied by increases in channel widths of 2 to 4 times the original widths. The deepening and widening of these streams has jeopardized the structural safety of many bridges by undercutting footings or pile caps, exposing considerable length of piling, and removing soil beneath and adjacent to abutments. Various types of flume and drop structures have been introduced in an effort to partially or totally stabilize these channels, protecting or replacing bridge structures. Although there has always been a need for economical grade stabilization structures to stop stream channel degradation and protect highway bridges and culverts, the problem is especially critical at the present time due to rapidly increasing construction costs and decreasing revenues. Benefits derived from stabilization extend beyond the transportation sector to the agricultural sector, and increased public interest and attention is needed.
