Background Glenoid component fixation remains an issue in the long-term survival of total shoulder arthroplasty. As a consequence revision of the glenoid component is becoming increasingly more common and reconstructive techniques to preserve and restore bone stock are becoming more important.

Methods In this article we describe the combined technique of impaction grafting and glenoid component exchange together with a classification of the glenoid defect with a report on four sequential cases in patients with rheumatoid arthritis with an average age of 56 years. The minimum follow-up was 34 months (range 34 months to 62 months).

Results Patients reported excellent pain relief and some improvement in motion and function. The complication rate remains low. Radiological assessment using tomograms showed good incorporation of the bone graft and minimal signs of glenoid loosening.

Conclusion The results of this study confirm that at least in the short term impaction grafting techniques used to reconstitute the glenoid in revision surgery can be successful.

On 30 May 1925 British officers opened fire on Chinese union protesters in Shanghai’s International Settlement, sparking a series of anti-imperialist protests now known as the ‘May 30th Movement’. This article traces the response of the Australian Labor movement to these events. It examines connections between Chinese and Australian unions and shows how Asian anti-colonial nationalism affected Australian perceptions of class-based inequality in the 1920s and 1930s. Orthodox histories of the Australian Labor movement emphasize its inward-looking and xenophobic nature but these national historiographies have been too quick to assume the isolation of Australia from pan-Asian anti-colonialism. Rather than arguing that Australian unionists supported decolonization in the inter-war period this article explores how class relationships mediated Australian encounters with colonized people in Asia. Treating Shanghai and Sydney as entangled outposts of Empire suggests we need to re-evaluate interpretations of Australian class dissent that regard it either as part of a solely European tradition or as a motivated only by local conditions.

The evolution of domestic air travel service in Japan is a product of many factors including airline responses to the changing aviation market, government interventions in terms of regulatory/deregulatory policies, infrastructure investments, and changes in market structure. This paper presents an empirical investigation of the changing quality of passenger airline service and its implications in the domestic aviation market in Japan using qualitative review and a time series analysis of the domestic airline markets from 1986 to 2003. The results show that to meet the ultimate aim of deregulation to increase air passengers’ welfare gain, there is a need to instill measures to correct service imbalance and to create innovative airport demand-capacity management measures.
