Objective. To evaluate the effect of two additives, aldehyde or diketone, on the wear, roughness and hardness of bis-GMA-based composites/copolymers containing TEGDMA, propoxylated bis-GMA (CH(3)bis-GMA) or propoxylated fluorinated bis-GMA (CF(3)bis-GMA). Methods. Fifteen experimental composites and 15 corresponding copolymers were prepared combining bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH3bis-GMA or CF3bis-GMA, with aldehyde (24mol% and 32 mol%) or diketone (24 mol% and 32 mol%) totaling 30 groups. For composites, hybrid treated filler (barium aluminosilicate glass/pyrogenic silica; 60 wt%) was added to monomer mixtures. Photopolymerization was affected by 0.2 wt% each of camphorquinone and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Wear (W) test was conducted in a toothbrushing abrasion machine (n = 6) and quantified using a profilometer. Surface roughness (R) changes, before and after abrasion test, were determined using a rugosimeter. Microhardness (H) measurements were performed for dry and wet samples using a Knoop microindenter (n = 6). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results. Incorporation of additives led to improved W and H values for bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA systems. Additives had no significant effect on the W and H changes of bis-GMA/CF(3)bis-GMA. With regard to R changes, additives produced decreased values for bis-GMA/CH3bis-GMA and bis-GMA/CF3bis-GMA composites. Bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA copolymers with additives became smoother after abrasion test. Significance. The findings correlate with additives ability to improve degree of conversion of some composites/copolymers thereby enhancing mechanical properties. Large chemical libraries can be synthesized on solid-support beads by the combinatorial split-and-mix method. A major challenge associated with this type of library synthesis is distinguishing between the beads and their attached compounds. A new method of encoding these solid-support beads, 'colloidal bar-coding', involves attaching fluorescent silica colloids ('reporters') to the beads as they pass through the compound synthesis, thereby creating a fluorescent bar code on each bead. In order to obtain sufficient reporter varieties to bar code extremely large libraries, many of the reporters must contain multiple fluorescent dyes. We describe here the synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of various mono- and multi-fluorescent silica particles for this purpose. It was found that by increasing the amount of a single dye introduced into the particle reaction mixture, mono- fluorescent silica particles of increasing intensities could be prepared. This increase was highly reproducible and was observed for six different fluorescent dyes. Multi-fluorescent silica particles containing up to six fluorescent dyes were also prepared. The resultant emission intensity of each dye in the multi-fluorescent particles was found to be dependent upon a number of factors; the hydrolysis rate of each silane-dye conjugate, the magnitude of the inherent emission intensity of each dye within the silica matrix, and energy transfer effects between dyes. We show that by varying the relative concentration of each silane-dye conjugate in the synthesis of multi-fluorescent particles, it is possible to change and optimize the resultant emission intensity of each dye to enable viewing in a fluorescence detection instrument.

Silica xerogels were prepared by a sol-gel process catalyzed by acid with tetraethylorthosilicate, and using an organic covalent ligand template (methyltriethoxysilane) or a noncovalent template C6 surfactant (triethylhexylammonium bromide). The influence of hydrotreatment on the structure of templated xerogels is examined in terms of surface area, micropore volume, average pore size, and pore size distribution, and compared against a blank xerogel (nontemplated). The role of surface functional groups was evaluated using Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance. The structural integrity of the xerogel was maintained to a large extent in samples that had a high contribution of Q(4) species (siloxane groups). Xerogel matrix densification occurred when there was a large concentration of Q(3) and Q(2) species (silanol groups), which also were responsible for increased hydrophilicity. The templated xerogels resulted in up to a 25% concentration of methyl functional groups (T-3 and T-2 species), leading to hydrophobic xerogels. The best results in terms of structural integrity and hydrophobicity were obtained with templated xerogels prepared with the C6 surfactant. The results in this study suggest that surfactant-enhanced condensation reactions lead to structures with a high contribution of Q(4) groups, which are not susceptible to water attack, but are strong enough to oppose matrix densification during rehydration.

This work examines the effects of level of silica filler (at 0, 10, 30, 50wt%) on the gelation and vitrification of a model silica-filled diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF)/methylenedianiline (MDA) system. An increased filler level is shown to decrease the gelation and vitrification times at low temperatures (below 80degreesC). FTIR cure kinetics show that the reaction rates are increased and the activation energies of gelation are reduced at these temperatures, indicating that network formation is made easier. Entropic and catalytic reasons for this phenomenon are discussed. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

The development and applications of thermoset polymeric composites, namely fibre reinforced plastics (FRP), have shifted in the last decades more and more into the mass market [1]. Despite of all advantages associated to FRP based products, the increasing production and consume also lead to an increasing amount of FRP wastes, either end-of-lifecycle products, or scrap and by-products generated by the manufacturing process itself. Whereas thermoplastic FRPs can be easily recycled, by remelting and remoulding, recyclability of thermosetting FRPs constitutes a more difficult task due to cross-linked nature of resin matrix. To date, most of the thermoset based FRP waste is being incinerated or landfilled, leading to negative environmental impacts and supplementary added costs to FRP producers and suppliers. This actual framework is putting increasing pressure on the industry to address the options available for FRP waste management, being an important driver for applied research undertaken cost efficient recycling methods. [1-2]. In spite of this, research on recycling solutions for thermoset composites is still at an elementary stage. Thermal and/or chemical recycling processes, with partial fibre recovering, have been investigated mostly for carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) due to inherent value of carbon fibre reinforcement; whereas for glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP), mechanical recycling, by means of milling and grinding processes, has been considered a more viable recycling method [1-2]. Though, at the moment, few solutions in the reuse of mechanically-recycled GFRP composites into valueadded products are being explored. Aiming filling this gap, in this study, a new waste management solution for thermoset GFRP based products was assessed. The mechanical recycling approach, with reduction of GFRP waste to powdered and fibrous materials was applied, and the potential added value of obtained recyclates was experimentally investigated as raw material for polyester based mortars. The use of a cementless concrete as host material for GFRP recyclates, instead of a conventional Portland cement based concrete, presents an important asset in avoiding the eventual incompatibility problems arisen from alkalis silica reaction between glass fibres and cementious binder matrix. Additionally, due to hermetic nature of resin binder, polymer based concretes present greater ability for incorporating recycled waste products [3]. Under this scope, different GFRP waste admixed polymer mortar (PM) formulations were analyzed varying the size grading and content of GFRP powder and fibre mix waste. Added value of potential recycling solution was assessed by means of flexural and compressive loading capacities of modified mortars with regard to waste-free polymer mortars.

Bioactive glasses, especially silica-based materials, are reported to pres- ent osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, fundamental char- acteristics in bone regeneration [1,2]. Additionally, dexamethasone (Dex) is one of the bioactive agents able to induce the osteogenic differ- entiation of mesenchymal stem cells by increasing the alkaline phos- phatase activity, and the expression levels of Osteocalcin and Bone Sialoprotein [3]. Herein, we synthesised silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (that present inherent bioactivity and ability to act as a sustained drug delivery system), and coated their surface using poly-L-lysine (PLL) and hyaluronic acid (HA) using the layer-by-layer processing technique. Further on, we studied the influence of these new SiO2-polyelectrolyte coated nanoparticles as Dex sustained delivery systems. The SiO2 nanoparticles were loaded with Dex (SiO2-Dex) and coated with PLL and HA (SiO2-Dex-PLL-HA). Their Dex release profile was evaluated and a more sustained release was obtained with the SiO2-Dex-PLL-HA. All the particles were cultured with human bone marrow-derived mes- enchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) under osteogenic differentiation culture conditions. hBMSCs adhered, proliferated and differentiated towards the osteogenic lineage in the presence of SiO2 (DLS 174nm), SiO2-Dex (DLS 175nm) and SiO2-Dex-PLL-HA (DLS 679nm). The presence of these materials induced the overexpression of osteogenic transcripts, namely of Osteocalcin, Bone Sialoprotein and Runx2. Scanning Elec- tron Microscopy/Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy analysis demon- strated that hBMSCs synthesised calcium phosphates when cultured with SiO2-Dex and SiO2-Dex-PLL-HA nanoparticles. These results indi- cate the potential use of these SiO2-polyelectrolytes coated nanoparti- cles as dexamethasone delivery systems capable of promoting osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs.

In this work the dielectric properties and ferromagnetic resonance of Polyvinylidene- uoride embedded with 10 wt. % of NiFe2O4 or Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles are presented. The mechanisms of the dielectric relaxation in these two composites do not differ from each other. For more precise characterization of the dielectric relaxation, a two dimensional distribution of relaxation times was calculated from the temperature dependencies of the complex dielectric permittivity. The results obtained from the 2D distribution and the mean relaxation time are found to be consistent. The dynamics of the dielectric permittivity is described by the Arrhenius law. The energy and attempt time of the dielectric relaxators lie in a narrow energy and time region thus proving that the single type chains of polymer are responsible for a dispersion. The magnetic properties of the composites were investigated using the fer- romagnetic resonance. A single resonance line was observed for both samples. From the temperature dependence (100 K - 310 K) of the resonance eld and linewidth, the origin of the observed line was attributed to the NiFe2O4 and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 superparamagnetic nanoparticles. By measuring lms at dif- ferent orientations with respect to the external magnetic eld, the angular dependence of the resonance was observed, indicating the magnetic dipolar in-plane interactions.

The biological and therapeutic responses to hyperthermia, when it is envisaged as an anti-tumor treatment modality, are complex and variable. Heat delivery plays a critical role and is counteracted by more or less efficient body cooling, which is largely mediated by blood flow. In the case of magnetically mediated modality, the delivery of the magnetic particles, most often superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), is also critically involved. We focus here on the magnetic characterization of two injectable formulations able to gel in situ and entrap silica microparticles embedding SPIONs. These formulations have previously shown suitable syringeability and intratumoral distribution in vivo. The first formulation is based on alginate, and the second on a poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVAL). Here we investigated the magnetic properties and heating capacities in an alternating magnetic field (141 kHz, 12 mT) for implants with increasing concentrations of magnetic microparticles. We found that the magnetic properties of the magnetic microparticles were preserved using the formulation and in the wet implant at 37 degrees C, as in vivo. Using two orthogonal methods, a common SLP (20 Wg(-1)) was found after weighting by magnetic microparticle fraction, suggesting that both formulations are able to properly carry the magnetic microparticles in situ while preserving their magnetic properties and heating capacities. We present a silicon chip-based approach for the enhanced sensitivity detection of surface-immobilized fluorescent molecules. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is bound to the silicon substrate by a disuccinimidyl terephtalate-aminosilane immobilization procedure. The immobilized organic layers are characterized by surface analysis techniques, like ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy. We obtain a 20-fold enhancement of the fluorescent signal, using constructive interference effects in a fused silica dielectric layer, deposited before immobilization onto the silicon. Our method opens perspectives to increase by an order of magnitude the fluorescent response of surface immobilized DNA- or protein-based layers for a variety of biosensor applications.

Two concentration methods for fast and routine determination of caffeine (using HPLC-UV detection) in surface, and wastewater are evaluated. Both methods are based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) concentration with octadecyl silica sorbents. A common “offline” SPE procedure shows that quantitative recovery of caffeine is obtained with 2 mL of an elution mixture solvent methanol-water containing at least 60% methanol. The method detection limit is 0.1 μg L−1 when percolating 1 L samples through the cartridge. The development of an “online” SPE method based on a mini-SPE column, containing 100 mg of the same sorbent, directly connected to the HPLC system allows the method detection limit to be decreased to 10 ng L−1 with a sample volume of 100 mL. The “offline” SPE method is applied to the analysis of caffeine in wastewater samples, whereas the “on-line” method is used for analysis in natural waters from streams receiving significant water intakes from local wastewater treatment plants

To evaluate the role of garnet and amphibole fractionation at conditions relevant for the crystallization of magmas in the roots of island arcs, a series of experiments were performed on a synthetic andesite at conditions ranging from 0.8 to 1.2 GPa, 800-1,000 degrees C and variable H2O contents. At water undersaturated conditions and fO(2) established around QFM, garnet has a wide stability field. At 1.2 GPa garnet ? amphibole are the high-temperature liquidus phases followed by plagioclase at lower temperature. Clinopyroxene reaches its maximal stability at H2O-contents <= 9 wt% at 950 degrees C and is replaced by amphibole at lower temperature. The slopes of the plagioclase-in boundaries are moderately negative in T-XH2O space. At 0.8 GPa, garnet is stable at magmatic H2O contents exceeding 8 wt% and is replaced by spinel at decreasing dissolved H2O. The liquids formed by crystallization evolve through continuous silica increase from andesite to dacite and rhyolite for the 1.2 GPa series, but show substantial enrichment in FeO/MgO for the 0.8 GPa series related to the contrasting roles of garnet and amphibole in fractionating Fe-Mg in derivative liquids. Our experiments indicate that the stability of igneous garnet increases with increasing dissolved H2O in silicate liquids and is thus likely to affect trace element compositions of H2O-rich derivative arc volcanic rocks by fractionation. Garnet-controlled trace element ratios cannot be used as a proxy

High-precision isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb zircon and baddeleyite ages from the PX1 vertically layered mafic intrusion Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, indicate initiation of magma crystallization at 22.10 +/- 0.07 Ma. The magmatic activity lasted a minimum of 0.52 Ma. Ar-40/Ar-39 amphibole dating yielded ages from 21.9 +/- 0.6 to 21.8 +/- 0.3, identical within errors to the U-Pb ages, despite the expected 1% theoretical bias between Ar-40/Ar-39 and U-Pb dates. This overlap could result from (i) rapid cooling of the intrusion (i. e., less than the 0.3 to 0.6 Ma 40Ar/39Ar age uncertainties) from closure temperatures (T-c) of zircon (699-988 degrees C) to amphibole (500-600 degrees C); (ii) lead loss affecting the youngest zircons; or (iii) excess argon shifting the plateau ages towards older values. The combination of the Ar-40/Ar-39 and U/Pb datasets implies that the maximum amount of time PX1 intrusion took to cool below amphibole T-c is 0.8 Ma, suggesting PX1 lifetime of 520 000 to 800 000 Ma. Age disparities among coexisting baddeleyite and zircon (22.10 +/- 0.07/0.08/0.15 Ma and 21.58 +/- 0.15/0.16/0.31 Ma) in a gabbro sample from the pluton margin suggest complex genetic relationships between phases. Baddeleyite is found preserved in plagioclase cores and crystallized early from low silica activity magma. Zircon crystallized later in a higher silica activity environment and is found in secondary scapolite and is found close to calcite veins, in secondary scapolite that recrystallised from plagioclase. close to calcite veins. Oxygen isotope delta O-18 values of altered plagioclase are high (+7.7), indicating interaction with fluids derived from host-rock carbonatites. The coexistence of baddeleyite and zircon is ascribed to interaction of the PX1 gabbro with CO2-rich carbonatite-derived fluids released during contact metamorphism.
