It is shown that, although the mathematical analysis of the Alfven-wave equation does not show any variation at non-zero or zero singular points, the role of surface waves in the physical mechanism of resonant absorption of Alfven waves is very different at these points. This difference becomes even greater when resistivity is taken into account. At the neutral point the zero-frequency surface waves that are symmetric surface modes of the structured neutral layer couple to the tearing mode instability of the layer. The importance of this study for the energy balance in tearing modes and the association of surface waves with driven magnetic reconnection is also pointed out.

ExperimentS were conducted to find the effects of seepage on flow over a sand bed in a straight rectangular flume under two conditions: (1) When the channel bed is plane, horizontal, and nontransporting; and (2) when the bed is transporting at a constant sediment concentration. Effects of both injection and suction, caused by seepage flow into and out of the channel bed, are studied for condition 1; and only suction effects are studied for condition 2, Three sands, sizes 0.34 mm, 0.53 mm, and 0.80 mm, are used in the study. It is found that seepage can cause an increase or decrease in the bed shear stress relative to no seepage for the two conditions. The change in bed shear stress depends on the relative magnitudes of the bed shear stress and the critical shear stress of particles under the no-seepage condition, sediment concentration, and the seepage rate. Quantitative relationships giving the ratio of bed shear stresses with and without seepage are presented for both conditions of the bed. A procedure to estimate the changes in bed shear stress, friction factor, Manning's n, and stream power due to seepage for known initial conditions of the channel and the amount of applied seepage is presented

Shock waves are one of the most efficient mechanisms of energy dissipation observed in nature. In this study, utilizing the instantaneous mechanical impulse generated behind a micro-shock wave during a controlled explosion, a novel nonintrusive needleless vaccine delivery system has been developed. It is well-known that antigens in the epidermis are efficiently presented by resident Langerhans cells, eliciting the requisite immune response, making them a good target for vaccine delivery. Unfortunately, needle-free devices for epidermal delivery have inherent problems from the perspective of the safety and comfort of the patient. The penetration depth of less than 100 mu m in the skin can elicit higher immune response without any pain. Here we show the efficient utilization of our needleless device (that uses micro-shock waves) for vaccination. The production of liquid jet was confirmed by high-speed microscopy, and the penetration in acrylamide gel and mouse skin was observed by confocal microscopy. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium vaccine strain pmrG-HM-D (DV-STM-07) was delivered using our device in the murine salmonellosis model, and the effectiveness of the delivery system for vaccination was compared with other routes of vaccination. Vaccination using our device elicits better protection and an IgG response even at a lower vaccine dose (10-fold less) compared to other routes of vaccination. We anticipate that our novel method can be utilized for effective, cheap, and safe vaccination in the near future.

Utilizing the commutativity property of the Cartesian coordinate differential operators arising in the boundary conditions associated with the propagation of surface water waves against a vertical cliff, under the assumptions of linearized theory, the problem of obliquely incident surface waves is considered for solution. The case of normal incidence, handled by previous workers follow as a particular limiting case of the present problem, which exhibits a source/sink type behavior of the velocity potential at the shore-line. An independent method of attack is also presented to handle the case of normal incidence.

Literature suggests that apart from a significant percentage of water loss from seepage, downward seepage from the channel causes an increase in the mobility of channel bed materials and thus changes the channel stability. Consequently, regime conditions (which provide the relationship among hydraulic parameters) should also be revised by incorporating downward seepage as an additional parameter. In the present work, regime conditions for the prediction of channel geometry in alluvial channels affected by downward seepage have been formulated on the basis of experimental observations. The aerodynamics of the blast wave produced by laser ablation is studied using the piston analogy. The unsteady one-dimensional gasdynamic equations governing the flow an solved under assumption of self-similarity. The solutions are utilized to obtain analytical expressions for the velocity, density, pressure and temperature distributions. The results predict. all the experimentally observed features of the laser produced blast waves.

In contrast to earlier observations on various solitary wave propagations, especially those bifurcated by the compressive and rarefactive solitary waves, the existence of spiky and explosive solitary waves is here believed to arise because of the presence of free and trapped electrons. So far, very few studies have been carried out to satisfactorily explain the presence of the solitary waves in space as observed by satellites. It is also attempted to highlight the probable impact on the various solitary wave propagations in a generalized multi-component, inhomogeneous plasma upon consideration of a relativistic treatment. It is expected that such a treatment will prove the existence of the solitary waves most expeditiously and exhibit the presence of chaos therein, thus giving a suitable explanation to the observations of various forms of spiky and explosive solitary waves in space-plasma. As a seepage barrier slurry trench material should have a relatively low coefficient of permeability, in the range of 10(-7) cm/s, and at the same time should be compatible with surrounding material with regard to compressibility. Although bentonite-sand/soil mixes are used widely, there is no specific engineering approach to proportion these mixes that satisfies the above practical requirements. In this paper, a generalized approach is presented for predicting the permeability and compressibility characteristics of mixes with minimum input parameters. This approach will be helpful in proportioning mixes and predicting corresponding changes in engineering behavior. It is possible to proportion a mix to arrive at the required compressibility without affecting the permeability. This is explained using an illustrative example.

The problems of obliquely incident surface water waves against a vertical cliff have been handled in both the cases of water of infinite as well as finite depth by straightforward uses of appropriate Havelock-type expansion theorems. The logarithmic singularity along the shore-line has been incorporated in a direct manner, by suitably representing the Dirac's delta function.

We use the extended Hubbard model to investigate the properties of the charge- and spin-density-wave phases in the presence of a nearest-neighbors repulsion term in the framework of the slave-boson technique. We show that, contrary to Hartree-Fock results, an instablity may occur for sufficiently high values of the Hubbard repulsion, both in the spin- and charge-density-wave phase, which makes the system discontinuously jump to a phase with a smaller or zero wave amplitude. The limits of applicability of our approach are discussed and our results are compared with previous numerical analysis. The phase diagram of the model at half-filling is determined.

Large amplitude stationary Rossby wave trains with wavelength in the range 50 degrees to 60 degrees longitude have been identified in the upper troposphere during May, through the analysis of 200 hPa wind anomalies. The spatial phase of these waves has been shown to differ by about 20 degrees of longitude between the dry and wet Indian monsoon years. It has been shown empirically that the Rossby waves are induced by the heat sources in the ITCZ. These heat sources appear in the Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions in May just prior to the onset of the Indian summer monsoon. The inter-annual spatial phase shift of the Rossby waves has been shown to be related to the shift in the deep convection in the zonal direction.

Seepage effects on the stability, mobility, and incipient motion of sand-bed particles are experimentally investigated. Seepage through a sand bed in a downward direction (suction) reduces the stability of particles, and it can even initiate their movement. The bed erosion is increased with the increased rates of suction. Whereas the seepage in an upward direction (injection) increases the stability of bed particles, it does not aid initiating their movement. The rate of bed erosion is reduced or even stopped by the increased infection rates. Hydrodynamic conditions leading to the so-called "pseudoincipient motion'' with suction (for the initiation of particles movement that are otherwise at rest under no-seepage conditions), and with injection (for only arresting the particles movement that are otherwise moving initially) are evaluated. The conventional Shields curve cannot be used to predict such pseudoincipient motion conditions with seepage. The concepts thus developed are useful for a better understanding of the sediment transport mechanics and in the design of stable alluvial channels affected by seepage.
