The design and VLSI implementation of two key components of the class-IV partial response maximum likelihood channel (PR-IV) the adaptive filter and the Viterbi decoder are described. These blocks are implemented using parameterised VHDL modules, from a library of common digital signal processing (DSP) and arithmetic functions. Design studies, based on 0.6 micron 3.3V standard cell processes, indicate that worst case sampling rates of 49 mega-samples per second are achievable for this system, with proportionally high sampling rates for full custom designs and smaller dimension processes. Significant increases in the sampling rate, from 49 MHz to approximately 180 MHz, can be achieved by operating four filter modules in parallel, and this implementation has 50% lower power consumption than a pipelined filter operating at the same speed.

This paper presents experimental and numerical studies into the hydrodynamic loading of a bottom-hinged large buoyant flap held rigidly upright in waves. Possible applications and limitations of physical experiments, a linear potential analytical method, a linear potential numerical method, a weakly non-linear tool and RANS CFD simulations are discussed. Different domains of applicability of these research techniques are highlighted considering the validity of underlying assumptions, complexity of application and feasibility in terms of resources like time and computing power needed to obtain results. Conclusions are drawn regarding the future extension of the numerical methods to the case of a moving flap.

We describe a protocol for the generation and validation of bacteria microarrays and their application to the study of specific features of the pathogen's surface and interactions with host receptors. Bacteria were directly printed on nitrocellulose-coated glass slides, using either manual or robotic arrayers, and printing quality, immobilization efficiency and stability of the arrays were rigorously controlled by incorporating a fluorescent dye into the bacteria. A panel of wild type and mutant strains of the human pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae, responsible for nosocomial and community-acquired infections, was selected as model bacteria, and SYTO-13 was used as dye. Fluorescence signals of the printed bacteria were found to exhibit a linear concentration-dependence in the range of 1 x 10(8) to 1 x 10(9) bacteria per ml. Similar results were obtained with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, two other human pathogens. Successful validation of the quality and applicability of the established microarrays was accomplished by testing the capacity of the bacteria array to detect recognition by anti-Klebsiella antibodies and by the complement subcomponent C1q, which binds K. pneumoniae in an antibody-independent manner. The biotin/AlexaFluor-647-streptavidin system was used for monitoring binding, yielding strain-and dose-dependent signals, distinctive for each protein. Furthermore, the potential of the bacteria microarray for investigating specific features, e.g. glycosylation patterns, of the cell surface was confirmed by examining the binding behaviour of a panel of plant lectins with diverse carbohydrate-binding specificities. This and other possible applications of the newly developed arrays, as e.g. screening/evaluation of compounds to identify inhibitors of host-pathogen interactions, make bacteria microarrays a useful and sensitive tool for both basic and applied research in microbiology, biomedicine and biotechnology.

The discussion of human dignity raises such complex issues, and the issues that current scholarship now considers central to its understanding are so daunting, that we are in danger of not being able to see the forest for the trees. This Introduction forms the first chapter of a book of essays (Christopher McCrudden (ed.), UNDERSTANDING HUMAN DIGNITY,
Proceedings of the British Academy/Oxford University Press, in press) by a multi-disciplinary group of historians, legal academics, judges, political scientists, theologians, and philosophers, arising from a Conference held in Rhodes House, Oxford In June 2012. The Introduction aims to provide a guide, a map, through the thicket of current dignity scholarship. It situates the subsequent chapters of the book within an overview of the terrain that currently constitutes debates about the use of dignity in these fields. I have not attempted to put forward my own
comprehensive account of dignity. Mostly based on the rich conversations that took place at the Conference, I have sought, rather, to probe the potential strengths and weaknesses of all of the principal positions identified, at least in some contexts taking on the role of a Devil’s Advocate.

Spermatogenesis is a complex process reliant upon interactions between germ cells (GC) and supporting somatic cells. Testicular Sertoli cells (SC) support GCs during maturation through physical attachment, the provision of nutrients, and protection from immunological attack. This role is facilitated by an active cytoskeleton of parallel microtubule arrays that permit transport of nutrients to GCs, as well as translocation of spermatids through the seminiferous epithelium during maturation. It is well established that chemical perturbation of SC microtubule remodelling leads to premature GC exfoliation demonstrating that microtubule remodelling is an essential component of male fertility, yet the genes responsible for this process remain unknown. Using a random ENU mutagenesis approach, we have identified a novel mouse line displaying male-specific infertility, due to a point mutation in the highly conserved ATPase domain of the novel KATANIN p60-related microtubule severing protein Katanin p60 subunit A-like1 (KATNAL1). We demonstrate that Katnal1 is expressed in testicular Sertoli cells (SC) from 15.5 days post-coitum (dpc) and that, consistent with chemical disruption models, loss of function of KATNAL1 leads to male-specific infertility through disruption of SC microtubule dynamics and premature exfoliation of spermatids from the seminiferous epithelium. The identification of KATNAL1 as an essential regulator of male fertility provides a significant novel entry point into advancing our understanding of how SC microtubule dynamics promotes male fertility. Such information will have resonance both for future treatment of male fertility and the development of non-hormonal male contraceptives.

In May 2014, the participative Project Som da Maré brings together the creative energy of a group of inhabitants from a cluster of favelas in Maré (Rio de Janeiro)* through the sonic arts. The work recalls everyday experiences, memories, stories and places. These memories elicit narratives that leave traces in space while contributing to the workings of local cultural.

The result of four months of workshops and fieldwork forms the basis of two cultural interventions: an exhibition in Museu da Maré** and guided soundwalks in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These interventions present realities, histories and ambitions of everyday life in the Maré favelas through immersive sound installation, documentary photography, text and objects.

Som da Maré brings together various groups of participants who together have developed themes, materials and strategies for the articulation of elements of everyday life in Maré. Participants include secondary level students under the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) “Young Talent” scholarships and their families, post-graduate students at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), PhD students from the Sonic Arts Research Centre (Queen’s University Belfast) and members of the Cia Marginal, a theatre company based in Maré. The project also counts with the participation of academics from music, ethnomusicology, visual art and architecture at the UFRJ and a partnership with the Museu da Maré. Over thirty people have come together to make this project possible.

This paper contributes to the literature on public-sector reforms by proposing textual analysis as a useful research strategy to explore how reform archetypes and related ideas are deployed in the parliamentary debate and regulations advancing reforms. Public Administration (PA) (Wilson 1887; Weber 1922), New Public Management (NPM) (Hood 1991, 1995; Dunleavy and Hood 1994; Ferlie et al. 1996) and Public Governance (GOV) (Osborne 2010; Rhodes 1997) can be depicted as three different archetypes providing characteristic administrative ideas and concepts (i.e. interpretive schemes) and related tools and practices (i.e. structures and systems) which lead reforms. We use textual analysis to look into more than twenty years of Italian central government accounting reforms and investigate how the three administrative archetypes have evolved, intertwined and replaced each other. Textual analysis proves a useful tool to investigate reform processes and allows highlighting that in neo-Weberian countries, such as Italy, NPM and GOV, far from being revolutionary paradigms, may represent fashionable trends that did not leave significant traces in the practice and rhetoric of reforms. These results also suggest interesting implications for practitioners and policy makers.

The nature and challenges of public sector leadership and management are examined in four case studies of project management in complex metropolitan environments. The cases selected by the authors as representative of contextual factors affecting decision-making processes and project outcomes. Drawing on recent theoretical work on complex leadership approaches (Uhl-Bein et al 2007, Hazy 2008, Lichtenstein & Plowman 2009), the authors assess leadership practices enacted and the circumstances that influence these practices. Leadership types theorized by Uhl-Bein et al (2007) are identified operating at different levels and across networks, with contextual factors outlined. The article concludes with a framework for leadership practice and management identifying network facilitation and complexity friendly tools as a practice within complex public sector systems.

A 16mm moving image work and expanded cinema performance co-commissioned by Tate Modern and Arnolfini. Shot at the post-production facilities of Pinewood studios, London, the close-up sequences feature abstract patterns of optical sound encoded as light, printed onto the soundtrack area of the filmstrip. The film features the quivering light of a 16mm mono and a 35mm stereo optical sound camera, providing a seismic glimpse at a sound-wave in formation, on occasions flashing like a stroboscopic Rorschach inkblot. A moving image work co-commissioned by the Science Museum (London), with extensive unprecedented access to the Oramics archive at Goldsmiths College and the Science Museum. Conceived of as an Artist's film in homage to Daphne Oram, the pioneer of British Electronic Music and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic workshop in 1958, the film features a close-up encounter with her unique invention, the Oramics Machine, housed at the Science Museum in London. Oram used drawn sound principles to compose ‘handwrought' electronic music, and yet the visual nature of her work remains largely unseen and unsung.
