The aim of this paper is to analyse how learning assessment, particularly the Continuous Assessment system, has been defined in the Public Administration and Management Diploma Course of the University of Barcelona (Spain). This course was a pioneering experiment at this university in implementing the guidelines of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and thus represents a good case study for verifying whether one of the cornerstones of the EHEA has been accomplished with success. Using data obtained from the Teaching Plans elaborated by the lecturers of each subject, we are able to establish that the CA system has been progressively accepted to such an extent that it is now the assessment formula used by practically all of the lecturers, conforming in this way to the protocols laid down by the Faculty of Law in which this diploma course is taught. Nevertheless, we find that high dispersion exists in how Continuous Assessment is actually defined. Indeed, it seems that there is no unified view of how Continuous Assessment should be performed. This dispersion, however, seems to diminish over time and raises some questions about the advisability of agreement on criteria, considering the potential which CA has as a pedagogical tool. Moreover, we find that the Unique Assessment system, which students may also apply for, is an option chosen only by a minority, with lecturers usually defining it as merely a theoretical and/or practical test, of little innovation in relation to traditional tests.

The new-generation nebulizers are commonly used for the administration of salbutamol in mechanically ventilated patients. The different modes of administration and new devices have not been compared. We developed a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of concentrations as low as 0.05 ng/mL of salbutamol, corresponding to the desired plasma concentration after inhalation. Salbutamol quantification was performed by reverse-phase HPLC. Analyte quantification was performed by electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry using selected reaction monitoring detection ESI in the positive mode. The method was validated over concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 100 ng/mL in plasma and from 0.18 to 135 ng/mL in urine. The method is precise, with mean inter-day coefficient of variation (CV%) within 3.1-8.3% in plasma and 1.3-3.9% in urine, as well as accurate. The proposed method was found to reach the required sensitivity for the evaluation of different nebulizers as well as nebulization modes. The present assay was applied to examine whether salbutamol urine levels, normalized with the creatinine levels, correlated with the plasma concentrations. A suitable, convenient and noninvasive method of monitoring patients receiving salbutamol by mechanical ventilation could be implemented. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although the physiological effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) are generally thought to require several weeks of exposure to allow their incorporation into plasma membranes, intravenous (IV) n-3PUFA attenuate the cardiovascular and neuroendocrine response to stress within 3 h. Whether oral n-3 PUFA exert similar early effects remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether acute IV or short term oral n-3PUFA administration reproduces the metabolic effects of long term oral supplements during exercise, and how it relates to their incorporation into platelets and red blood cells (RBC) membranes. DESIGN: Prospective single center open label study in 8 healthy subjects receiving a 3-h infusion of 0.6 g/kg body weight n-3PUFA emulsion, followed one week later by an oral administration of 0.6 g/kg over 3 consecutive days. Maximal power output (cycling exercise), maximal heart rate (HR), blood lactate at exhaustion, and platelet function were measured at baseline and after IV or 3-day oral supplementation; platelet and RBC membrane composition were assessed until 15 days after n-3PUFA administration. RESULTS: Both IV and oral n-3PUFA significantly decreased maximal HR (-6% and -5%), maximal power output (-10%) and peak blood lactate (-47% and -52%) Platelet function tests were unchanged. The EPA and DHA membrane contents of RBC and platelets increased significantly, but only to 1.7-1.9% of fatty acid content. CONCLUSION: The cardiovascular and metabolic effects of n-3 PUFA during exercise occur already within 1-3 days of exposure, and may be unrelated to changes in membranes composition. Effects occur within hours of administration and are unrelated to lipid membrane composition. Trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00516178.

This handbook describes the peer review methodology that was applied at the GODIAC project fi eld studies1. The peer review evaluation method as initiated by Otto Adang in the Netherlands and further developed in a European football context (Adang & Brown, 2008) involves experienced police offi cers cooperating with researchers to perform observational fi eld studies to identify good practices and learning points for public order management. The handbook builds on the GODIAC seminars and workshops, for the fi eld study members, which took place in September 2010, January 2012 and January 2013. The handbook has been discussed in the project group and in the steering committee. It is primarily written for the GODIAC fi eld study members as background material for understanding the fi eld study process and for clarifying the different responsibilities that enable active participation in the fi eld study. The handbook has been developed during the project period and incorporates learning points and developments of the peer review method. The handbook aims at promoting the use of fi eld studies for evaluation of policing major events.

The volume is divided into two parts; the fi rst deals with issues related to the police, and the second addresses issues related to demonstrators and protesters. We hope that this volume will provide further insight into issues associated with policing at major events and shed light on the complexity of the organisations, motives, and strategies in play whenever protester groups are involved.

This report summarises the fi eld study results of the project ’Good practice for dialogue and communication as strategic principles for policing political manifestations in Europe’ (GODIAC).1 The overall idea was to integrate operative police work, research and training within the fi eld and to build international and institutional networks, ensuring and recognising the responsibilities of the organisers. The purpose of the GODIAC project was to contribute to the development of a European approach to policing political manifestations.

The STIP is generated to provide the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration a listing of all projects that are candidates for federal aid from the FHWA and FTA for four federal fiscal years (FFY). The 2015-2018 STIP was approved by FHWA and FTA on September 16, 2014. Preceding the listings of federal-aid candidates are general comments concerning Iowa’s public participation process for selection of federal-aid projects and the basis for funding the proposed projects. Documents evidencing the Iowa Department of Transportation’s authority to act concerning matters related to transportation, federal-aid expenditures and approvals of metropolitan planning organizations’ (MPOs), transportation improvements programs (TIPs) have been provided in past STIPs and can be provided again upon request.

Patients with cancer, irrespective of the stage of their disease, can require admission to the intensive care unit as a result of the complications of their underlying process or the surgical or pharmacological treatment provided. The cancer itself, as well as the critical status that can result from the complications of the disease, frequently lead to a high degree of hypermetabolism and inadequate energy intake, causing a high incidence of malnutrition in these patients. Moreover, cancer causes anomalous use of nutritional substrates and therefore the route of administration and proportion and intake of nutrients may differ in these patients from those in noncancer patients.

Injection of cells expressing the retroviral superantigen Mls-1 (Mtv-7 sag) into adult Mls-1- mice induces a strong immune response including both T- and B-cell activation. This model was used for studying qualitative aspects of the immune response in normal mice with a defined antigen-presenting cell (the B cell) and without the use of adjuvant. BALB/c mice were injected locally or systemically with Mls-1-expressing spleen cells from Mls-1-congenic BALB.D2 mice. Intravenous injection led to an initially strong expansion of Mls-1-reactive V beta 6+ CD4+ cells mainly in the spleen, to a large degree explained by the trapping of reactive cells, and a rapid down-regulation of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production, consistent with the proposed tolerogenic property of B cells as antigen-presenting cells. However, these mice developed a slowly appearing but persistent B-cell response dominated by IgG1-producing cells, suggesting a shift in lymphokines produced rather than complete unresponsiveness. Subcutaneous injection into the hind footpad with the same number of cells led to a strong local response in the draining lymph node, characterized by a dramatic increase of V beta 6+ CD4+ T cells, local production of IL-2 and IFN-gamma and a strong but short-lived antibody response dominated by IgG2a-producing cells, characteristic of a T-helper type 1 (Th1) type of response. Both routes of injection led ultimately to deletion of reactive T cells and anergy, as defined by the inability to produce IL-2 upon in vitro stimulation with Mls-1. It is concluded that Mls-1 presented by B cells induces qualitatively different responses in vivo dependent on the route of injection. We propose that the different responses result from the migration of the injected cells to different micro-anatomical sites in the lymphoid tissue. Furthermore, these results suggest that B cells may function as professional antigen-presenting cells in vivo present in an appropriate environment.

Doping with natural steroids can be detected by evaluating the urinary concentrations and ratios of several endogenous steroids. Since these biomarkers of steroid doping are known to present large inter-individual variations, monitoring of individual steroid profiles over time allows switching from population-based towards subject-based reference ranges for improved detection. In an Athlete Biological Passport (ABP), biomarkers data are collated throughout the athlete's sporting career and individual thresholds defined adaptively. For now, this approach has been validated on a limited number of markers of steroid doping, such as the testosterone (T) over epitestosterone (E) ratio to detect T misuse in athletes. Additional markers are required for other endogenous steroids like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). By combining comprehensive steroid profiles composed of 24 steroid concentrations with Bayesian inference techniques for longitudinal profiling, a selection was made for the detection of DHT and DHEA misuse. The biomarkers found were rated according to relative response, parameter stability, discriminative power, and maximal detection time. This analysis revealed DHT/E, DHT/5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol and 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol/5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol as best biomarkers for DHT administration and DHEA/E, 16α-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterone/E, 7β-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterone/E and 5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol/5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol for DHEA. The selected biomarkers were found suitable for individual referencing. A drastic overall increase in sensitivity was obtained.The use of multiple markers as formalized in an Athlete Steroidal Passport (ASP) can provide firm evidence of doping with endogenous steroids.
