[cat] Mentre que una creixent literatura que ha examinat la relació entre la renda i la despesa sanitària suggereix que els serveis sanitaris són un be de luxe (elasticitat renda superior a la unitat), aquesta conclusió es contínuament debatuda atesa l'heterogeneïtat dels resultats. Aquest article testa la hipòtesis dels serveis sanitaris com bens de luxe fent server anàlisi de meta- regressió, particularment analitzant l'existència de biaixos de selecció de publicació, precisió així com biaixos d'agregació. Els resultats apunten l'existència d'un biaix de publicació, robust independentment dels controls analitzats. Els biaixos de precisió i agregació semblen tenir un paper en la generació de les estimacions de l'elasticitat renda. Els nostres resultat suggereixen que l'elasticitat renda dels serveis sanitaris un cop corregir pels biaixos esmentat varien entre 0.26 i 0.84, però no podem rebutjar que la elasticitat renda es igual a la unitat en algunes estimacions de l'elasticitat corregides.

Current technology trends in medical device industry calls for fabrication of massive arrays of microfeatures such as microchannels on to nonsilicon material substrates with high accuracy, superior precision, and high throughput. Microchannels are typical features used in medical devices for medication dosing into the human body, analyzing DNA arrays or cell cultures. In this study, the capabilities of machining systems for micro-end milling have been evaluated by conducting experiments, regression modeling, and response surface methodology. In machining experiments by using micromilling, arrays of microchannels are fabricated on aluminium and titanium plates, and the feature size and accuracy (width and depth) and surface roughness are measured. Multicriteria decision making for material and process parameters selection for desired accuracy is investigated by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, which is an evolutionary computation method inspired by genetic algorithms (GA). Appropriate regression models are utilized within the PSO and optimum selection of micromilling parameters; microchannel feature accuracy and surface roughness are performed. An analysis for optimal micromachining parameters in decision variable space is also conducted. This study demonstrates the advantages of evolutionary computing algorithms in micromilling decision making and process optimization investigations and can be expanded to other applications

A simple and reliable ashing procedure is proposed for the preparation of used lubricating oil samples for the determination of Zn, Fe, Pb, Ni and Cu by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry technique. Sulphanilic acid was added to oil samples, the mixture coked and the coke ashed at 550 ºC. The solutions of the ash were analysed by flame AAS for these metals. The quantification limits were 38.250 µg g-1 for Zn, 4.550 µg g-1 for Fe, 1.562 µg g-1 for Pb, 1.450 µg g-1 for Ni, and 0.439 µg g-1 for Cu. The determinations, in lubricating oil, showed good precision and accuracy with recoveries between 90 and 110 %, indicating a negligible matrix effect in the experiments using addition of analyte, with relative standard deviation lower than 5%. The results for analysis of wastewater contamined by theses lubricants showed a very high relative standard deviation.

The structural relaxation of pure amorphous silicon (a-Si) and hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) materials, that occurs during thermal annealing experiments, has been analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Unlike a-Si, the heat evolved from a-Si:H cannot be explained by relaxation of the Si-Si network strain but it reveals a derelaxation of the bond angle strain. Since the state of relaxation after annealing is very similar for pure and hydrogenated materials, our results give strong experimental support to the predicted configurational gap between a-Si and crystalline silicon

The aim of this project is to get used to another kind of programming. Since now, I used very complex programming languages to develop applications or even to program microcontrollers, but PicoCricket system is the evidence that we don’t need so complex development tools to get functional devices. PicoCricket system is the clear example of simple programming to make devices work the way we programmed it. There’s an easy but effective way to programs mall devices just saying what we want them to do. We cannot do complex algorithms and mathematical operations but we can program them in a short time. Nowadays, the easier and faster we produce, the more we earn. So the tendency is to develop fast, cheap and easy, and PicoCricket system can do it.

Chemical reactions in the solid state are often not included in undergraduate chemistry curricula, due to requirements for special laboratory facilities such as ovens and precision weighing balances. This work aims to describe novel and relatively simple magnetite chemical syntheses in dry medium, which could also be used as an alternative for freshmen chemistry experiments. The proposed reaction was carried out in a muffle furnace by heating (i) a sol-gel preparation and (ii) natural hematite, under nitrogen atmosphere at 400 ºC. The synthesized magnetite was characterized with powder X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Results show that magnetite samples have chemical properties as well as crystalline structure quite similar to those of standard natural magnetite.

Ultrafast 2D NMR is a powerful methodology that allows recording of a 2D NMR spectrum in a fraction of second. However, due to the numerous non-conventional parameters involved in this methodology its implementation is no trivial task. Here, an optimized experimental protocol is carefully described to ensure efficient implementation of ultrafast NMR. The ultrafast spectra resulting from this implementation are presented based on the example of two widely used 2D NMR experiments, COSY and HSQC, obtained in 0.2 s and 41 s, respectively.

Two sensitive spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of lansoprazole (LPZ) in bulk drug and in capsule formulation. The methods are based on the oxidation of lansoprazole by insitu generated bromine followed by determination of unreacted bromine by two different reaction schemes. In one procedure (method A), the residual bromine is treated with excess of iron (II), and the resulting iron (III) is complexed with thiocyanate and measured at 470 nm. The second approach (method B) involves treating the unreacted bromine with a measured excess of iron (II) and remaining iron (II) is complexed with orthophenanthroline at a raised pH, and measured at 510 nm. In both methods, the amount of bromine reacted corresponds to the amount of LPZ. The experimental conditions were optimized. In method A, the absorbance is found to decrease linearly with the concentration of LPZ (r = -0.9986) where as in the method B a linear increase in absorbance occurs (r = 0.9986) The systems obey Beer's law for 0.5-4.0 and 0.5-6.0 µg mL-1 for method A and method B, respectively. The calculated molar absorptivity values are 3.97µ10(4) and 3.07µ10(4) L mol-1cm-1 for method A and method B, respectively, and the corresponding Sandell sensitivity values are 0.0039 and 0.0013 µg cm-2. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) are also reported for both methods. Intra-day and inter-day precision, and accuracy of the methods were established as per the current ICH guidelines. The methods were successfully applied to the determination of LPZ in capsules and the results tallied well with the label claim and the results were statistically compared with those of a reference method by applying the Student's t-test and F-test. No interference was observed from the concomitant substances normally added to capsules. The accuracy and validity of the methods were further ascertained by performing recovery experiments via standard-addition method.

Two sensitive spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of simvastatin (SMT) in bulk drug and in tablets. The methods are based on the oxidation of SMT by a measured excess of cerium (IV) in acid medium followed by determination of unreacted oxidant by two different reaction schemes. In one procedure (method A), the residual cerium (IV) is reacted with a fixed concentration of ferroin and the increase in absorbance is measured at 510 nm. The second approach (method B) involves the reduction of the unreacted cerium (IV) with a fixed quantity of iron (II), and the resulting iron (III) is complexed with thiocyanate and the absorbance measured at 470 nm. In both methods, the amount of cerium (IV) reacted corresponds to SMT concentration. The experimental conditions for both methods were optimized. In method A, the absorbance is found to increase linearly with SMT concentration (r = 0.9995) whereas in method B, the same decreased (r = -0.9943). The systems obey Beer's law for 0.6-7.5 and 0.5-5.0 µg mL-1 for method A and method B, respectively. The calculated molar absorptivity values are 2.7 X 10(4) and 1.06 X 10(5) Lmol-1 cm-1, respectively; and the corresponding sandel sensitivity values are 0.0153 and 0.0039µg cm-2, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) are reported for both methods. Intra-day and inter-day precision, and accuracy of the methods were established as per the current ICH guidelines. In this thesis three experiments with atomic hydrogen (H) at low temperatures T<1 K are presented. Experiments were carried out with two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) H gas, and with H atoms trapped in solid H2 matrix. The main focus of this work is on interatomic interactions, which have certain specific features in these three systems considered. A common feature is the very high density of atomic hydrogen, the systems are close to quantum degeneracy. Short range interactions in collisions between atoms are important in gaseous H. The system of H in H2 differ dramatically because atoms remain fixed in the H2 lattice and properties are governed by long-range interactions with the solid matrix and with H atoms. The main tools in our studies were the methods of magnetic resonance, with electron spin resonance (ESR) at 128 GHz being used as the principal detection method. For the first time in experiments with H in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures we combined ESR and NMR to perform electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) as well as coherent two-photon spectroscopy. This allowed to distinguish between different types of interactions in the magnetic resonance spectra. Experiments with 2D H gas utilized the thermal compression method in homogeneous magnetic field, developed in our laboratory. In this work methods were developed for direct studies of 3D H at high density, and for creating high density samples of H in H2. We measured magnetic resonance line shifts due to collisions in the 2D and 3D H gases. First we observed that the cold collision shift in 2D H gas composed of atoms in a single hyperfine state is much smaller than predicted by the mean-field theory. This motivated us to carry out similar experiments with 3D H. In 3D H the cold collision shift was found to be an order of magnitude smaller for atoms in a single hyperfine state than that for a mixture of atoms in two different hyperfine states. The collisional shifts were found to be in fair agreement with the theory, which takes into account symmetrization of the wave functions of the colliding atoms. The origin of the small shift in the 2D H composed of single hyperfine state atoms is not yet understood. The measurement of the shift in 3D H provides experimental determination for the difference of the scattering lengths of ground state atoms. The experiment with H atoms captured in H2 matrix at temperatures below 1 K originated from our work with H gas. We found out that samples of H in H2 were formed during recombination of gas phase H, enabling sample preparation at temperatures below 0.5 K. Alternatively, we created the samples by electron impact dissociation of H2 molecules in situ in the solid. By the latter method we reached highest densities of H atoms reported so far, 3.5(5)x1019 cm-3. The H atoms were found to be stable for weeks at temperatures below 0.5 K. The observation of dipolar interaction effects provides a verification for the density measurement. Our results point to two different sites for H atoms in H2 lattice. The steady-state nuclear polarizations of the atoms were found to be non-thermal. The possibility for further increase of the impurity H density is considered. At higher densities and lower temperatures it might be possible to observe phenomena related to quantum degeneracy in solid.

In general, the traditional Physics courses needs examples of the aplications of the Physics concepts in other areas such as Chemistry and Biology. This lacks tend to demotivate Chemistry and Biology students regarding to deal with Physical concepts developed in classroom. In this work, the analogy among mechanic and electric oscillators is investigated to be applied in Chemistry and Biology areas, showing to be valuable due to its aplication in techniques that aims to measure mass variation with high precision. This measure could be made in a direct or indirect way. These techniques are known as electrogravimetric techniques and they are important in biosensor aplications. Thus, this paper explores the electromechanic analogy in an interdisciplinary way involving areas like Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Based on this analogy, it is proposed an experiment that can be applied in different ways, i.e. by an basic approach or more deeper, depending on the students specific formation, in other words, Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

Two simple, rapid and accurate methods for the determination of bupropion hydrochloride (BUP) in pure and in pharmaceutical preparations are described. Both methods are based on the measurement of the chloride of its hydrochloride. In the titrimetric method, the chloride content of bupropion hydrochloride is determined by titrating with mercury(II)nitrate using diphenylcarbazone-bromophenol blue as indicator. Titrimetric method is applicable over a range 2-20 mg of BUP and the reaction stoichiometry is found to be 2:1 (BUP: Hg(NO3)2). The spectrophotometric method involves the addition of a measured excess of mercury(II) nitrate reagent in formate buffer to the drug, and after ensuring the reaction had gone to completion, the unreacted mercury(II) is treated with a fixed amount of diphenylcarbazone, and absorbance measured at 515 nm. The absorbance is found to decrease linearly with increasing concentration of BUP and the calibration curve is linear over 1.0-15.0 µg mL-1 BUP. The proposed methods were successfully applied to the determination of BUP in commercially available dosage forms with good accuracy and precision, and without detectable interference by excipients. The accuracy was further ascertained by placebo blank and synthetic mixture analyses and also by recovery experiments via standard-addition procedure.

This MSc work was done in the project of BIOMECON financed by Tekes. The prime target of the research was, to develop methods for separation and determination of carbohydrates (sugars), sugar acids and alcohols, and some other organic acids in hydrolyzed pulp samples by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using UV detection. Aspen, spruce, and birch pulps are commonly used for production of papers in Finland. Feedstock components in pulp predominantly consist of carbohydrates, organic acids, lignin, extractives, and proteins. Here in this study, pulps have been hydrolyzed in analytical chemistry laboratories of UPM Company and Lappeenranta University in order to convert them into sugars, acids, alcohols, and organic acids. Foremost objective of this study was to quantify and identify the main and by-products in the pulp samples. For the method development and optimization, increased precision in capillary electrophoresis was accomplished by calculating calibration data of 16 analytes such as D-(-)-fructose, D(+)-xylose, D(+)-mannose, D(+)-cellobiose, D-(+)-glucose, D-(+)-raffinose, D(-)-mannitol, sorbitol, rhamnose, sucrose, xylitol, galactose, maltose, arabinose, ribose, and, α-lactose monohydratesugars and 16 organic acids such as D-glucuronic, oxalic, acetic, propionic, formic, glycolic, malonic, maleic, citric, L-glutamic, tartaric, succinic, adipic, ascorbic, galacturonic, and glyoxylic acid. In carbohydrate and polyalcohol analyses, the experiments with CE coupled to direct UV detection and positive separation polarity was performed in 36 mM disodium hydrogen phosphate electrolyte solution. For acid analyses, CE coupled indirect UV detection, using negative polarity, and electrolyte solution made of 2,3 pyridinedicarboxylic acid, Ca2+ salt, Mg2+ salts, and myristyltrimethylammonium hydroxide in water was used. Under optimized conditions, limits of detection, relative standard deviations and correlation coefficients of each compound were measured. The optimized conditions were used for the identification and quantification of carbohydrates and acids produced by hydrolyses of pulp. The concentrations of the analytes varied between 1 mg – 0.138 g in liter hydrolysate.
