The small signal ac response is measured across the source-drain terminals of poly(2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) field-effect transistor under dc bias to obtain the equivalent circuit parameters in the dark, and under a monochromatic light (540 nm) of various intensities. The numerically simulated response based on these parameters shows deviation at low frequency which is related to the charge accumulation at the interface and the contact resistance at the electrodes. This method can be used to differentiate the photophysical phenomena occurring in the bulk from that at the metal-semiconductor interface for polymer field-effect transistors. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

Plasma polymerization was used to coat a melt electrospun polycaprolactone scaffold to improve cell attachment and organization. Plasma polymerization was performed using an amine containing monomer, allylamine, which then allowed for the subsequent immobilization of biomolecules i.e. heparin and fibroblast growth factor-2. The stability of the plasma polymerized amine-coating was demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed that a uniform plasma amine-coating was deposited throughout the scaffold. Based upon comparison with controls it was evident that the combination scaffold aided cell ingress and the formation of distinct fibroblast and keratinocyte layers.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-matrix reinforced with nanodiamond (ND) particles, with ND content up to 0.6 wt%, were synthesized. Characterization of the composites by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) reveal uniform distribution of the ND particles with no agglomeration in the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry reveals that the crystallinity of the polymer increases with increasing ND content, indicating a strong interaction between ND and PVA. Nano-indentation technique was employed to assess the mechanical properties of composites. Results show that even small additions of ND lead to significant enhancement in the hardness and elastic modulus of PVA. Possible micromechanisms responsible for the enhancement of the mechanical properties are discussed.

The blue emission of polyfluorene (PF)-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is known to degrade due to a low-energy green emission, which hitherto has been attributed to oxidative defects. By studying the electroluminescence (EL) from ethyl-hexyl substituted PF LEDs in the presence of oxygen and in an inert atmosphere, and by using trace quantities of paramagnetic impurities (PM) in the polymer, we show that the triplet states play a major role in the low-energy emission mechanism. Our time-dependent many-body studies show a large cross-section for the triplet formation in the EL process in the presence of PM, primarily due to electron-hole recombination processes.

In view of the recent interest in compounds containing M-SH units, an organotin hydrosulfide compound, Me2Sn(SH)(O2CMe) (1) was prepared by controlled hydrolysis of the diorganotin thioacetate. Under similar mild hydrolytic conditions the corresponding benzoate could not be isolated. Instead, the thiobenzoate complex, Me2Sn(SOCPh)(2) (3) was obtained in excellent yields indicating that there was no hydrolysis. Both 1 and 3 were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Some properties of the polymeric compound 1, such as spectral, electrical conductivity and NLO response were also studied. The reactivity and properties were explained using density functional calculations.

ZnO nanoneedles were successfully deposited on flexible polymer substrates at room temperature by activated reactive evaporation. Neither a catalyst nor a template was employed in this synthesis. These synthesized needles measured 500 - 600 nm in length and its diameter varied from 30 - 15 nm from the base to the tip. The single-crystalline nature of the nanoneedle was observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies. The Raman studies on these nanoneedles had shown that they are oxygen deficient in nature. A possible growth mechanism has been proposed here, in which the nanoneedles nucleate and grow in the gas phase by vapor-solid mechanism.

Organic-inorganic composite membranes comprising Nation with inorganic materials such as silica, mesoporous zirconium phosphate (MZP) and mesoporous titanium phosphate (MTP) are fabricated and evaluated as proton-exchange-membrane electrolytes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). For Nation-silica composite membrane, silica is impregnated into Nation matrix as a sol by a novel water hydrolysis process precluding the external use of an acid. Instead, the acidic nature of Nation facilitates in situ polymerization reaction with Nation leading to a uniform composite membrane. The rapid hydrolysis and polymerization reaction while preparing zirconia and titania sols leads to uncontrolled thickness and volume reduction in the composite membranes, and hence is not conducive for casting membranes. Nafion-MZP and Nafion-MTP composite membranes are prepared by mixing pre-formed porous MZP and MTP with Nation matrix. MZP and MTP are synthesised by co-assembly of a tri-block co-polymer, namely pluronic-F127, as a structure-directing agent, and a mixture of zirconium butoxide/titanium isopropoxide and phosphorous trichloride as inorganic precursors. Methanol release kinetics is studied by volume-localized NMR spectroscopy (employing ``point resolved spectroscopy'', PRESS), the results clearly demonstrating that the incorporation of inorganic fillers in Nation retards the methanol release kinetics under osmotic drag. Appreciable proton conductivity with reduced methanol permeability across the composite membranes leads to improved performance of DMFCs in relation to commercially available Nafion-117 membrane.

The possibility of using spin-probe electron spin resonance (ESR) as a tool to study glass transition temperature, T g, of polymer electrolytes is explored in 4 hydroxy 2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidine N oxyl (TEMPOL) doped composite polymer electrolyte (PEG)46LiClO4 dispersed with nanoparticles of hydrotalcite. The T g is estimated from the measured values of T 50G, the temperature at which the extrema separation 2A zz of the broad powder spectrum decreases to 50 G. In another method, the correlation time τc for the spin probe dynamics was determined by computer simulation of the ESR spectra and T g has been identified as the temperature at which τc begins to show temperature dependence. While both methods give values of T g close to those obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, it is concluded that more work is required to establish spin-probe ESR as a reliable technique for the determination of T g.

Iron encapsulated carbon nanoparticle polyvinyl chloride composite films have been prepared by solvent mixing and drying method. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). A 5 nm thin graphitic carbon coating is observed on cubic Fe nanoparticles. The microwave absorption studies by wave guide technique in the Ka band range showed highest electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 18dB on a 300 micron thick film. The shielding efficiency depends on weight % of the filler in the composite. The data obtained for different films indicate that these lightweight materials are good candidates for potential electromagnetic interference shielding applications.

The dynamics of loop formation by linear polymer chains has been a topic of several theoretical and experimental studies. Formation of loops and their opening are key processes in many important biological processes. Loop formation in flexible chains has been extensively studied by many groups. However, in the more realistic case of semiflexible polymers, not much results are available. In a recent study [K. P. Santo and K. L. Sebastian, Phys. Rev. E 73, 031923 (2006)], we investigated opening dynamics of semiflexible loops in the short chain limit and presented results for opening rates as a function of the length of the chain. We presented an approximate model for a semiflexible polymer in the rod limit based on a semiclassical expansion of the bending energy of the chain. The model provided an easy way to describe the dynamics. In this paper, using this model, we investigate the reverse process, i.e., the loop formation dynamics of a semiflexible polymer chain by describing the process as a diffusion-controlled reaction. We make use of the ``closure approximation'' of Wilemski and Fixman [G. Wilemski and M. Fixman, J. Chem. Phys. 60, 878 (1974)], in which a sink function is used to represent the reaction. We perform a detailed multidimensional analysis of the problem and calculate closing times for a semiflexible chain. We show that for short chains, the loop formation time tau decreases with the contour length of the polymer. But for longer chains, it increases with length obeying a power law and so it has a minimum at an intermediate length. In terms of dimensionless variables, the closing time is found to be given by tau similar to L-n exp(const/L), where n=4.5-6. The minimum loop formation time occurs at a length L-m of about 2.2-2.4. These are, indeed, the results that are physically expected, but a multidimensional analysis leading to these results does not seem to exist in the literature so far.

Three-dimensional (3D) Fe2(MoO4)3 microspheres with ultrathin nanosheet constituents are first synthesized as anode materials for the lithium-ion battery. It is interesting that the single-crystalline nanosheets allow rapid electron/ion transport on the inside, and the high porosity ensures fast diffusion of liquid electrolyte in energy storage applications. The electrochemical properties of Fe2(MoO4)3 as anode demonstrates that 3D Fe2(MoO4)3 microspheres deliver an initial capacity of 1855 mAh/g at a current density of 100 mA/g. Particularly, when the current density is increased to 800 mA/g, the reversible capacity of Fe2(MoO4)3 anode still arrived at 456 mAh/g over 50 cycles. The large and reversible capacities and stable charge–discharge cycling performance indicate that Fe2(MoO4)3 is a promising anode material for lithium battery applications. The main obstacle for the application of high quality diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings has been the lack of adhesion to the substrate as the coating thickness is increased. The aim of this study was to improve the filtered pulsed arc discharge (FPAD) method. With this method it is possible to achieve high DLC coating thicknesses necessary for practical applications. The energy of the carbon ions was measured with an optoelectronic time-of-flight method. An in situ cathode polishing system used for stabilizing the process yield and the carbon ion energies is presented. Simultaneously the quality of the coatings can be controlled. To optimise the quality of the deposition process a simple, fast and inexpensive method using silicon wafers as test substrates was developed. This method was used for evaluating the suitability of a simplified arc-discharge set-up for the deposition of the adhesion layer of DLC coatings. A whole new group of materials discovered by our research group, the diamond-like carbon polymer hybrid (DLC-p-h) coatings, is also presented. The parent polymers used in these novel coatings were polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The energy of the plasma ions was found to increase when the anode-cathode distance and the arc voltage were increased. A constant deposition rate for continuous coating runs was obtained with an in situ cathode polishing system. The novel DLC-p-h coatings were found to be water and oil repellent and harder than any polymers. The lowest sliding angle ever measured from a solid surface, 0.15 ± 0.03°, was measured on a DLC-PDMS-h coating. In the FPAD system carbon ions can be accelerated to high energies (≈ 1 keV) necessary for the optimal adhesion (the substrate is broken in the adhesion and quality test) of ultra thick (up to 200 µm) DLC coatings by increasing the anode-cathode distance and using high voltages (up to 4 kV). An excellent adhesion can also be obtained with the simplified arc-discharge device. To maintain high process yield (5µm/h over a surface area of 150 cm2) and to stabilize the carbon ion energies and the high quality (sp3 fraction up to 85%) of the resulting coating, an in situ cathode polishing system must be used. DLC-PDMS-h coating is the superior candidate coating material for anti-soiling applications where also hardness is required.

Superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces have been extensively investigated due to their importance for industrial applications. It has been reported, however, that superhydrophobic surfaces are very sensitive to heat, ultraviolet (UV) light, and electric potential, which interfere with their long-term durability. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to achieve robust superhydrophobic thin films by designing architecture-defined complex nanostructures. A family of ZnO hollow microspheres with controlled constituent architectures in the morphologies of 1D nanowire networks, 2D nanosheet stacks, and 3D mesoporous nanoball blocks, respectively, was synthesized via a two-step self-assembly approach, where the oligomers or the constituent nanostructures with specially designed structures are first formed from surfactant templates, and then further assembled into complex morphologies by the addition of a second co-surfactant. The thin films composed of two-step synthesized ZnO hollow microspheres with different architectures presented superhydrophobicities with contact angles of 150°-155°, superior to the contact angle of 103° for one-step synthesized ZnO hollow microspheres with smooth and solid surfaces. Moreover, the robust superhydrophobicity was further improved by perfluorinated silane surface modification. The perfluorinated silane treated ZnO hollow microsphere thin films maintained excellent hydrophobicity even after 75 h of UV irradiation. The realization of environmentally durable superhydrophobic surfaces provides a promising solution for their long-term service under UV or strong solar light irradiations.

It is a challenge to increase the visible-light photoresponses of wide-gap metal oxides. In this study, we proposed a new strategy to enhance the visible-light photoresponses of wide-gap semiconductors by deliberately designing a multi-scale nanostructure with controlled architecture. Hollow ZnO microspheres with constituent units in the shape of one-dimensional (1D) nanowire networks, 2D nanosheet stacks, and 3D mesoporous nanoball blocks are synthesized via an approach of two-step assembly, where the oligomers or the constituent nanostructures with specially designed structures are first formed, and then further assembled into complex morphologies. Through deliberate designing of constituent architectures allowing multiple visible-light scattering, reflections, and dispersion inside the multiscale nanostructures, enhanced wide range visible-light photoresponses of the ZnO hollow microspheres were successfully achieved. Compared to the one-step synthesized ZnO hollow microspheres, where no nanostructured constituents were produced, the ZnO hollow microspheres with 2D nanosheet stacks presented a 50 times higher photocurrent in the visible-light range (λ > 420 nm). The nanostructure induced visible-light photoresponse enhancement gives a direction to the development of novel photosensitive materials.
