A series of manganese(II) [Mn(L)] and manganese(III) [Mn(L)(X)] (X = ClO4, OAc, NCS, N3, Cl, Br and I) complexes have been synthesized from Schiff base ligands N,N′-o- phenylenebis(salicylideneimine)(LH2) and N,N′-o-phenylenebis(5- bromosalicylideneimine)(L′H2) obtained by condensation of salicylaldehyde or 5-Br salicylaldehyde with o-phenylene-diamine. The complexes have been characterized by the combination of IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and electrochemical studies. Three manganese(III) complexes 3 [Mn(L)(ClO4)(H2O)], 5 [Mn(L)(OAc)] and 13 [Mn(L)(NCS)] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The X-ray structures show that the manganese(III) is hexa-coordinated in 3, it is penta-coordinated in 13, while in 5 there is an infinite chain where the MnL moieties are connected by acetate ions acting as bridging bidentate ligand. The cyclic voltammograms of all the manganese(III) complexes exhibit two reversible/quasi-reversible/ irreversible responses assignable to Mn(III)/Mn(II) and Mn(IV)/Mn(III) couples. It was observed that the ligand L′H2 containing the 5-bromosal moiety always stabilizes the lower oxidation states compared to the corresponding unsubstituted LH2. Cyclic voltammograms of the manganese(II) complexes (1 and 2) exhibit a quasi-reversible Mn(III)/Mn(II) couple at E1/2 -0.08 V for 1 and 0.054 V for 2. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Five manganese complexes in an N 4O 2 donor environment have been prepared. Four of the compounds involve aroyl hydrazone as ligands and manganese is in a +2 oxidation state. The fifth compound was prepared using N,Nprime-o-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine) and imidazole as ligands where manganese is present in +3 oxidation state. X-ray crystal structure of one Mn +2 compound and the Mn +3 compound was determined. The relative stabilities of the Mn +2 and Mn +3 oxidation states were analyzed using the structural data and MO calculations. Manganese(II) complexes of four aroyl hydrazone ligands were prepared and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. The complexes are of the type Mn(L) 2, where L stands for the deprotonated hydrazone ligand. One of the compounds, Mn(pybzhz) 2, was also characterized by single crystal structure determination. In all these complexes, the Mn(II) is in an N 4O 2 donor environment and the Mn(II) center cannot be oxidized either chemically or electrochemically. However, when another ligand Ophsal is used to give the compound [Mn(Ophsal)(imzH) 2]ClO 4, which was also characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination, manganese can easily avail the +3 oxidation state. The relative stabilities of the +2 and +3 oxidation states of manganese were analyzed and it was concluded that the extent of distortion from the perfect octahedral geometry is the main controlling factor in these cases. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. A survey of crystal structures containing hydantoin, dihydrouracil and uracil derivatives in the Cambridge Structural Database revealed four main types of hydrogen bond motifs when derivatives with extra substituents able to interfere with the main motif are excluded. All these molecules contain two hydrogen bond donors and two hydrogen bond acceptors in the sequence of NH, C = O, NH, and C=O groups within a 5-membered ring (hydantoin) and two 6-membered rings (dihydrouracil and uracil). In all cases, both ring NH groups act as donors in the main hydrogen bond motif but there is an excess of hydrogen bond acceptors (two C=O able to accept twice each) and so two possibilities are found: (i) each carbonyl O atom may accept one hydrogen bond or (ii) one carbonyl O atom may accept two hydrogen bonds while the other does not participate in the hydrogen bonding. We observed different preferences in the type and symmetry of the motifs adopted by the different derivatives, and a good agreement is found between motifs observed experimentally and those predicted using computational methods. We identified certain molecular factors such as chirality, substituent size and the possibility of C-H⋯O interactions as important factors influencing the motif observation. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

In 1934, Arthur Lindo Patterson showed that a map of interatomic vectors is obtainable from measured X-ray diffraction data without phase information. Such maps were interpretable for simple crystal structures, but proliferation and overlapping of peaks caused confusion as the number of atoms increased. Since the peak height of a vector between two particular atoms is related to the product of their atomic numbers, a complicated structure could effectively be reduced to a simple one by including just a few heavy atoms (of high atomic number) since their interatomic vectors would stand out from the general clutter. Once located, these atoms provide approximate phases for Fourier syntheses that reveal the locations of additional atoms. Surveys of small-molecule structures in the Cambridge Structural Database during the periods 1936-1969, when Patterson methods were commonly used, and 1980-2013, dominated by direct methods, demonstrate large differences in the abundance of certain elements. The moderately heavy elements K, Rb, As and Br are the heaviest elements in the structure more than 3 times as often in the early period than in the recent period. Examples are given of three triumphs of the heavy atom method and two initial failures that had to be overcome. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

Light confinement and controlling an optical field has numerous applications in the field of telecommunications for optical signals processing. When the wavelength of the electromagnetic field is on the order of the period of a photonic microstructure, the field undergoes reflection, refraction, and coherent scattering. This produces photonic bandgaps, forbidden frequency regions or spectral stop bands where light cannot exist. Dielectric perturbations that break the perfect periodicity of these structures produce what is analogous to an impurity state in the bandgap of a semiconductor. The defect modes that exist at discrete frequencies within the photonic bandgap are spatially localized about the cavity-defects in the photonic crystal. In this thesis the properties of two tight-binding approximations (TBAs) are investigated in one-dimensional and two-dimensional coupled-cavity photonic crystal structures We require an efficient and simple approach that ensures the continuity of the electromagnetic field across dielectric interfaces in complex structures. In this thesis we develop \textrm{E} -- and \textrm{D} --TBAs to calculate the modes in finite 1D and 2D two-defect coupled-cavity photonic crystal structures. In the \textrm{E} -- and \textrm{D} --TBAs we expand the coupled-cavity \overrightarrow{E} --modes in terms of the individual \overrightarrow{E} -- and \overrightarrow{D} --modes, respectively. We investigate the dependence of the defect modes, their frequencies and quality factors on the relative placement of the defects in the photonic crystal structures. We then elucidate the differences between the two TBA formulations, and describe the conditions under which these formulations may be more robust when encountering a dielectric perturbation. Our 1D analysis showed that the 1D modes were sensitive to the structure geometry. The antisymmetric \textrm{D} mode amplitudes show that the \textrm{D} --TBA did not capture the correct (tangential \overrightarrow{E} --field) boundary conditions. However, the \textrm{D} --TBA did not yield significantly poorer results compared to the \textrm{E} --TBA. Our 2D analysis reveals that the \textrm{E} -- and \textrm{D} --TBAs produced nearly identical mode profiles for every structure. Plots of the relative difference between the \textrm{E} and \textrm{D} mode amplitudes show that the \textrm{D} --TBA did capture the correct (normal \overrightarrow{E} --field) boundary conditions. We found that the 2D TBA CC mode calculations were 125-150 times faster than an FDTD calculation for the same two-defect PCS. Notwithstanding this efficiency, the appropriateness of either TBA was found to depend on the geometry of the structure and the mode(s), i.e. whether or not the mode has a large normal or tangential component.

The work embodied in this thesis was carried out by the author in the Department of Applied Chemistry, CUSAT, Kochi, during the period 2009-2012. The thesis is an introduction to our attempts to evaluate the coordination behavior of some compounds of our interest. The biological activities of semicarbazones and their metal complexes have been an active area of research during the past years because of their significant role in naturally occurring biological systems. Tridentate NNO and ONO semicarbazone systems formed from heterocyclic and aromatic carbonyl compounds and their transition metal complexes are wellauthenticated compounds in this field and their synthesis, crystal structures and spectral studies are well desirable. Hence, we decided to develop a research program aimed at the syntheses, crystal structures and spectral studies of new N4- phenylsemicarbazones derived from 2-formylpyridine and 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and their transition metal complexes and new transition metal complexes of 2- benzoylpyridine-N4-phenylsemicarbazone. In addition to various physicochemical methods of analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were also used for the characterization of the complexes.

Processing of the YMn2O5 powder is very challenging, since it decomposes to YMnO3 and Mn3O4 at temperatures close to 1180 °C, while samples consolidation commonly demands high temperatures. The main goal of this work is to investigate a possibility to prepare thick films of YMn2O5, since their deposition generally requires significantly lower temperatures. Multiferroic YMn 2O5 was synthesized by the hydrothermal method from Y(CH3COO)3·xH2O, Mn(CH 3COO)2·4H2O and KMnO4 precursors. XRD, FE-SEM and TEM analysis showed that the obtained powder was monophasic, with orthorhombic crystal structure and columnar particle shape with mean diameter and length of around 20 and 50 nm, respectively. The obtained powder was suspended in isopropyl alcohol with addition of appropriate binder and deflocculant. This suspension was used for electrophoretic deposition of YMn2O5 thick films under the high-voltage conditions and electric fields ranging from 250 to 2125 V/cm. The films obtained at 1000 V/cm and higher electric fields showed good adhesion, particle packing, homogeneity and very low porosity. It was shown that the deposition in extremely high electric fields (KC=2125 V/cm) can influence the crystal orientation of the films, resulting in formation of preferentially oriented films. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The crystal structures of two ternary metal nucleotide complexes of cobalt, [Co(en)2(H2O)2]-[Co(5?-IMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (1) and [Co(en)2(H2O)2][Co(5?-GMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (2), have been analysed by X-ray diffraction (en = ethylenediamine, 5?-IMP = inosine 5?-monophosphate, and 5?-GMP = guanosine 5?-monophosphate). Both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group C2221 with a= 8.725(1), b= 25.891(5), c= 21.212(5)Å, Z= 4 for (1) and a= 8.733(2), b= 26.169(4), c= 21.288(4)Å, Z= 4 for (2). The structure of (1) was solved by the heavy-atom method, while that of (2) was deduced from (1). The structures were refined to R values of 0.09 and 0.10 for 1 546 and 1 572 reflections for (1) and (2) respectively. The two structures are isomorphous. A novel feature is that the chelate ligand en and the nucleotide are not co-ordinated to the same metal ion. One of the metal ions lying on the two-fold a axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two chelating en molecules and two water oxygens, while the other on the two-fold b axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two N(7) atoms of symmetry-related nucleotides in a cis position and four water oxygens. The conformations of the nucleotides are C(2?)-endo, anti, and gauchegauche. In both (1) and (2) the charge-neutralising chloride ions are disordered in the vacant space between the molecules. These structures bear similarities to the mode of nucleotide co-ordination to PtII complexes of 6-oxopurine nucleotides, which are the proposed models for intrastrand cross-linking in DNA by a metal complex.
