Three chemical species related to biomass burning, levoglucosan, potassium and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), were measured in aerosol samples collected in a rural area on the outskirts of the municipality of Ourinhos (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). This region is representative of the rural interior of the State, where the economy is based on agro-industrial production, and the most important crop is sugar cane. The manual harvesting process requires that the cane be first burned to remove excess foliage, leading to large emissions of particulate materials to the atmosphere. Most of the levoglucosan (68-89%) was present in small particles (<1.5 mu m), and its concentration in total aerosol ranged from 25 to 1186 ng m(-3). The highest values were found at night, when most of the biomass burning occurs. In contrast, WSOC showed no diurnal pattern, with an average concentration of 5.38 +/- 2.97 mu g m(-3) (n = 27). A significant linear correlation between levoglucosan and WSOC (r = 0.54; n = 26; p < 0.0001) confirmed that biomass burning was in fact an important source of WSOC in the study region. A moderate (but significant) linear correlation between levoglucosan and potassium concentrations (r = 0.62; n = 40; p < 0.0001) was indicative of the influence of other sources of potassium in the study region, such as soil resuspension and fertilizers. When only the fine particles (<1.5 pm; typical of biomass burning) were considered, the linear coefficient increased to 0.91 (n = 9). In this case, the average levoglucosan/K+ ratio was 0.24, which may be typical of biomass burning in the study region. This ratio is about 5 times lower than that previously found for Amazon aerosol collected during the day, when flaming combustion prevails. This suggests that the levoglucosan/K+ ratio may be especially helpful for characterization of the type of vegetation burned (such as crops or forest), when biomass-burning is the dominant source of potassium. The relatively high concentrations of WSOC (and inorganic ions) suggest an important influence on the formation of cloud condensation nuclei, which is likely to affect cloud formation and precipitation patterns. mitochondrial genomes are generally thought to be under selection for compactness, due to their small size, consistent gene content, and a lack of introns or intergenic spacers. As more animal mitochondrial genomes are fully sequenced, rearrangements and partial duplications are being identified with increasing frequency, particularly in birds (Class Ayes). In this study, we investigate the evolutionary history of mitochondrial control region states within the avian order Psittaciformes (parrots and cockatoos). To this aim, we reconstructed a comprehensive multi-locus phylogeny of parrots, used PCR of three diagnostic fragments to classify the mitochondrial control region state as single or duplicated, and mapped these states onto the phylogeny. We further sequenced 44 selected species to validate these inferences of control region state. Ancestral state reconstruction using a range of weighting schemes identified six independent origins of mitochondrial control region duplications within Psittaciformes. Analysis of sequence data showed that varying levels of mitochondrial gene and tRNA homology and degradation were present within a given clade exhibiting duplications. Levels of divergence between control regions within an individual varied from 0-10.9% with the differences occurring mainly between 51 and 225 nucleotides 3' of the goose hairpin in domain I. Further investigations into the fates of duplicated mitochondrial genes, the potential costs and benefits of having a second control region, and the complex relationship between evolutionary rates, selection, and time since duplication are needed to fully explain these patterns in the mitochondrial genome. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009. Although COS was initially designed to perform high-sensitivity medium- and low-resolution spectroscopy of astronomical objects in the 1150-3200 Å wavelength range, new wavelength settings have recently become available that allow medium-resolution spectroscopy down to 900 Å, at effective areas comparable to those of FUSE. Here we provide an update on the implementation of the new short wavelength settings G130M/1222, 1096, and 1055. We discuss changes to the Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) and Near-Ultraviolet (NUV) dark rates, FUV pulse height filtering, new and improved flux calibrations for FUV Lifetime Positions 1 and 2, changes in sensitivity for both the NUV and FUV channels, and give a general overview of the calibration projects undertaken in Cycles 19 and 20.

In dieser Arbeit werden die mikroskopischen, chemischen und spektroskopischen Charakteristika von 260 natürlichen Smaragden und 66 synthetischen „Smaragden“ untersucht. Die Konzentrationen der chemischen Elemente von Smaragden wurden mit Hilfe der LA-ICP-MS und EMS bestimmt. Ergänzende Raman- und IR spektroskopische Methoden ermöglichen es, die Herkunft der verschiedenen Smaragde und ihrer synthetischen Analoga zu bestimmen. Auf Grund der verschiedenen Gehalte von Si, Al und Be können synthetische „Smaragde“ von natürlichen getrennt werden. Die Smaragde von Malipo, Chivor und auch synthetische „Smaragde“ können von allen anderen natürlichen Smaragden wegen der unterschiedlichen Cr-, V-, und Fe-Gehalte von einander getrennt werden. Wegen der unterschiedlichen Mg-, Na-, K-Gehalte lassen sich eher „schiefer-gebundene“ Smaragde identifizieren. Dabei wird festgestellt, dass die Unterscheidung in „schiefer-„ und „nichtschiefer-gebundene“ Smaragd-Vorkommen im Wesentlichen nur die Endglieder einer offensichtlich kristallchemisch sehr variablen Mineralchemie der Berylle, bzw. Smaragde beschreibt, dass damit aber keinesfalls eine petrologisch vertretbare Trennung belegbar ist, sondern dass Smaragde nur das jeweils regierende chemische Regime unter geeigneten Druck-Temperatur-Bedingungen widerspiegeln. Einschlussmerkmale spielen eine große Rolle bei der Unterscheidung verschiedener Lagerstätten und Herstellungsmethoden. Zum Beispiel können die Smaragde der drei Lagerstätten Santa Terezinha, Chivor, und Kafubu mit Hilfe ihrer charakteristischen Pyriteinschlüsse identifiziert werden. Die Band-Positionen und FWHM -Werte der Raman-Bande bei 1068 cm-1 und der IR-Bande bei 1200 cm-1 ermöglichen eine Differenzierung zwischen synthetischen und natürlichen Smaragden, und können darüber hinaus auch Auskunft geben über die Lagerstätte. Zusammen mit chemischen Messwerten kann bewiesen werden, dass diese Banden von Si-O Schwingungen verursacht werden. Die Raman- und IR-Banden im Bereich der Wasserschwingungen und insbesondere das IR-Band um 1140 cm-1 führen zur Trennung von Flux-Synthesen, Hydrothermal-Synthesen und natürlichen Smaragden.

This thesis tends to study the origins and developments of the restoration in Iran from its very first moments till the Islamic revolution of 1978. The thesis is its first study of its kind. While almost all recent occidental ideologies regarding the thematic of restoration and conservation of historic monuments are translated and published in Iran, very little efforts have been done regarding the study of the origins of the formation of restoration in the country. The diversity of Iranian contexts, multiplicity of the intervening factors and other factors characterized a different background for the raise and developments of restoration in the country; in the thesis the influencing and characterizing factors in the formation and development of restoration in Iran will be defined and studied in detail with relative examples; due to the complexity of the Iranian context and in order to consider all influencing and characterizing factors the thesis, parallel to have formation and development of restoration, as the main scope of the research, the developments influencing factors will be confronted with necessary flashbacks to the main theme, when and where necessary. A great care will be given to the period of the activity of the restoration experts of IsMEO which is thesis will be called as the period of the introduction of the modern principles of restoration into Iranian context; the fundamental ideologies, practical and theoretical principles of IsMEO will be identified and studied in details; important case of studies of the restoration of IsMEO will be analyzed in details and the innovative aspect of the presence of Italian experts of IsMEO will be revealed.

This research aims to identify the guidelines that are opposed to Judaism in the body of the work Dialogue with Trypho of Justin Martyr, using the methodology engendered by Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson in their work, The Established and the Outsiders. As a result, our research intends to contribute to unveil another aspect of Justin’s work, considered by many scholars as a proselytistic tool; by taking it as a document builder of the Christian identity trough its dissociation from Judaism. For this reason, this thesis investigates and reviews the socio-cultural and political environment that gave rise to Roman Christianity, taking into consideration Christian internal conflicts and the resulting dichotomies within the Roman Christian community, as a result of its departure from its Jewish matrix.

After the 2008 financial crisis, the financial innovation product Credit-Default-Swap (CDS) was widely blamed as the main cause of this crisis. CDS is one type of over-the-counter (OTC) traded derivatives. Before the crisis, the trading of CDS was very popular among the financial institutions. But meanwhile, excessive speculative CDSs transactions in a legal environment of scant regulation accumulated huge risks in the financial system. This dissertation is divided into three parts. In Part I, we discussed the primers of the CDSs and its market development, then we analyzed in detail the roles CDSs had played in this crisis based on economic studies. It is advanced that CDSs not just promoted the eruption of the crisis in 2007 but also exacerbated it in 2008. In part II, we asked ourselves what are the legal origins of this crisis in relation with CDSs, as we believe that financial instruments could only function, positive or negative, under certain legal institutional environment. After an in-depth inquiry, we observed that at least three traditional legal doctrines were eroded or circumvented by OTC derivatives. It is argued that the malfunction of these doctrines, on the one hand, facilitated the proliferation of speculative CDSs transactions; on the other hand, eroded the original risk-control legal mechanism. Therefore, the 2008 crisis could escalate rapidly into a global financial tsunami, which was out of control of the regulators. In Part III, we focused on the European Union’s regulatory reform towards the OTC derivatives market. In specific, EU introduced mandatory central counterparty clearing obligation for qualified OTC derivatives, and requires that all OTC derivatives shall be reported to a trade repository. It is observable that EU’s approach in re-regulating the derivatives market is different with the traditional administrative regulation, but aiming at constructing a new market infrastructure for OTC derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Diversity patterns of livestock species are informative to the history of agriculture and indicate uniqueness of breeds as relevant for conservation. So far, most studies on cattle have focused on mitochondrial and autosomal DNA variation. Previous studies of Y-chromosomal variation, with limited breed panels, identified two Bos taurus (taurine) haplogroups (Y1 and Y2; both composed of several haplotypes) and one Bos indicus (indicine/zebu) haplogroup (Y3), as well as a strong phylogeographic structuring of paternal lineages. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Haplogroup data were collected for 2087 animals from 138 breeds. For 111 breeds, these were resolved further by genotyping microsatellites INRA189 (10 alleles) and BM861 (2 alleles). European cattle carry exclusively taurine haplotypes, with the zebu Y-chromosomes having appreciable frequencies in Southwest Asian populations. Y1 is predominant in northern and north-western Europe, but is also observed in several Iberian breeds, as well as in Southwest Asia. A single Y1 haplotype is predominant in north-central Europe and a single Y2 haplotype in central Europe. In contrast, we found both Y1 and Y2 haplotypes in Britain, the Nordic region and Russia, with the highest Y-chromosomal diversity seen in the Iberian Peninsula. CONCLUSIONS: We propose that the homogeneous Y1 and Y2 regions reflect founder effects associated with the development and expansion of two groups of dairy cattle, the pied or red breeds from the North Sea and Baltic coasts and the spotted, yellow or brown breeds from Switzerland, respectively. The present Y1-Y2 contrast in central Europe coincides with historic, linguistic, religious and cultural boundaries.

Infection with Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) may result in the development of the haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), the main cause of acute renal failure in children. While O157:H7 STEC are associated with large outbreaks of HUS, it is difficult to predict whether a non-O157:H7 isolate can be pathogenic for humans. The mucosal innate immune response plays a central role in the pathogenesis of HUS; therefore, we compared the induction of IL-8 and CCL20 in human colon epithelial cells infected with strains belonging to different serotypes, isolated from cattle or from HUS patients. No correlation was observed between strain virulence and chemokine gene expression. Rather, the genetic background of the strains seems to determine the chemokine gene expression profile. Investigating the contribution of different bacterial factors in this process, we show that the type III secretion system of O157:H7 bacteria, but not the intimate adhesion, is required to stimulate the cells. In addition, H7, H10, and H21 flagellins are potent inducers of chemokine gene expression when synthesized in large amount.

Observing and documenting life cycle stages of plants and animals have been tradition and necessity for humans throughout history. Phenological observations—as called by their modern scientific name—were key to successful hunting and farming because the precise knowledge of animal behavior and plant growth, as well as their timing with changing seasons, was critical for survival. In today's context of environmental awareness and climate change research, phenological observations have become prime indicators of documenting altered life cycles due to environmental change in disciplines from biology to climatology, geography, and environmental history. Observations on the ground, from space, and from models of different complexity describe intra-annual and interannual changes of life cycles at individual, pixel, or grid box scale.
