Informação e conhecimento na nova ordem mundial

Este artigo discute o papel da informação e do conhecimento na nova ordem mundial. O foco central é o advento e a difusão da denominada economia da informação e do conhecimento, a qual vem induzindo novas atividades, conceitos de competitividade, estratégias organizacionais e formatos institucionais (que influenciam empresas, centros de ensino e pesquisa, governos etc. e até os próprios indivíduos) e exigindo novas capacitações.

Economia de átomos, engenharia molecular e catálise organometálica bifásica: conceitos moleculares para tecnologias limpas

For economical and ecological reasons, synthetic chemists are confronted with the increasing obligation of optimizing their synthetic methods. Maximizing efficiency and minimizing costs in the production of molecules and macromolecules constitutes, therefore, one of the most exciting challenges of synthetic chemistry. The ideal synthesis should produce the desired product in 100% yield and selectivity, in a safe and environmentally acceptable process. In this highlight the concepts of atom economy, molecular engineering and biphasic organometallic catalysis, which address these issues at the molecular level for the generation of "green" technologies, are introduced and discussed.

In this paper, the atom economy concepts are applied in a series of experiments during an experimental organic chemistry class, to implement "green chemistry" in an undergraduate course.

Algas: da economia nos ambientes aquáticos à bioremediação e à química analítica

Algae constitute a large group of many different organisms, essentially aquatic and able to live in all systems giving them sufficient light and humidity. Some algae species have been used in the evaluation or in the bioremediation of aquatic systems. More recently algae have been suggested as interesting tools in the field of analytical chemistry. In this work the most important aspects related to the different uses of algae are presented with a brief discussion.

Energia, meio ambiente e economia: o Brasil no contexto mundial

The cycle of fossil fuels as an energy source for mankind is approaching its end. Finite resources, coupled with greenhouse gas, have led to an increased effort in the search for alternative renewable energy sources. Brazil has a leading position, due to a 46% participation of renewable sources in its primary energy supply, compared to the global average of 12%. The expansion of the renewable sources in Brazil depends on medium and long term planning, and a large volume of investments. The present financial crisis will have major effects in the energy market. Despite a negative initial impact, it is expected that the rearrangement of the financial system will ultimately lead to an expansion in the use of renewable energy sources. Brazil is a tropical country, with the largest biodiversity in our planet and excellent conditions to expand the use of all forms of renewable sources.

Nova estratégia de desenvolvimento para o Brasil: um enfoque de longo prazo

The foremost aim of the article is to propose a new development strategy for Brazil, replacing the neoliberal model presently used. In short, the point is to recover a long term vision of the economic policies. And for that it is indispensable to take into consideration the recent evolution of the Development Economics which considers the existence of market, instead of the availability of savings, as the main condition in economic development policies. The acceptance of the market as the basic condition for successful development policies has as one of its consequences the unacceptability of the process of globalization with its present characteristics.

A nova disciplina de sistemas econômicos comparados: uma proposta

The new discipline of comparative economic systems: a proposition. This article offers elements for a reorientation of the subject matter of the discipline " Comparative Economic Systems" with the impact of the fall of the Berlin’s wall. Thus, we argue that in the context of the modern democratic society the political choice between society models occurs in a narrower set of options. Thus the study of pure forms of socialism is of historical interest, but he is not relevant to this discipline since it must prioritize the debate around the choice of compatible alternative models within the rule of law. So the article offers a new program for this discipline, able to describe and to understand the diversity of systems between countries that had opted for mixing market economy.

It is discussed the recent Irish experience of sustained economic growth, in which a social pact, the entry in the European Union and the opening of the economy have all played a paramount role. Some remarks on the sustainability of such an experience are also made.

A nova lei de falências brasileira: primeiros impactos

The goal of this paper is to analyze the premiere effects of the New Brazilian Bankruptcy Law, measuring its impact over the amount of bankruptcies and judicial reorganizations, and the firms' access to credit. Making use of econometric models we find that the amount of bankruptcies (requested and decreed) suffered a strong and immediate impact, reducing it in a significant way as well as the requirement of judicial reorganizations. Finally, using sectorial aggregated credit data, we find an expansion of the credit market, mainly to commercial, rural and services sectors. Additionally we did not evidence changes at the average interest rate charged to firms.

Instituições e políticas regionais: uma proposta para a nova Sudene

Sudene is the Brazilian Federal Agency for Northeast development. The Agency was recreated last year and this article discusses the possibility of its success. The main point argued here is that financial incentives per se are not the best way for a sustained economical and social progress. It is necessary a change in the institutions which maintain the status quo of the underdevelopment. The article shows the Sudene history and the motives of its failure.

Perspectivas das negociações entre o Mercosul e a União Europeia em um contexto de paralisia do sistema multilateral e da nova geografia econômica global

The aim of this paper is to scale the impact of changes in the patterns of international trade and Foreign Investment and how the shift in the world economic geography affects the relations between Mercosur and the European Union. The perception is that the outcome of negotiations between the two blocks is linked to the paralysis of the multilateral system and the European perspective of the economic dimension of the Agreement. The study suggests that the European Union faces conceptual and operational problems to establish clear goals and business strategies towards Mercosur and to insert them under a new global economic geography.

La Universidad del Rosario es reconocida como una institución de educación superior que históricamente ha acompañado al país en la búsqueda de una sociedad cada vez más justa y más incluyente, con mayor calidad de vida y con capacidad para aportar a la academia, a las ciencias y a las disciplinas. Desde antes de la conformación de Colombia como Estado soberano, la Universidad del Rosario ha hecho grandes aportes a la sociedad mediante la formación de personas caracterizadas por sus sólidos principios éticos y las mejores calidades profesionales para servir con responsabilidad a la construcción de un mejor futuro. En las últimas dos décadas, la Universidad ha vivido un profundo proceso de transformación que le ha permitido modernizar sus estructuras académicas y definir planes de desarrollo de largo plazo que le aseguren ir adelante en el tiempo para mantener y acrecentar su pertinencia social, académica y científica, sin perder la riqueza acumulada por la tradición y las notas que han caracterizado al Rosario a lo largo de su existencia.
