We present the first simultaneous measurements of the Thomson scattering and electron cyclotron emission radiometer diagnostics performed at TCABR tokamak with Alfven wave heating. The Thomson scattering diagnostic is an upgraded version of the one previously installed at the ISTTOK tokamak, while the electron cyclotron emission radiometer employs a heterodyne sweeping radiometer. For purely Ohmic discharges, the electron temperature measurements from both diagnostics are in good agreement. Additional Alfven wave heating does not affect the capability of the Thomson scattering diagnostic to measure the instantaneous electron temperature, whereas measurements from the electron cyclotron emission radiometer become underestimates of the actual temperature values. Heavy quark production has been very well studied over the last years both theoretically and experimentally. Theory has been used to study heavy quark production in ep collisions at HERA, in pp collisions at Tevatron and RHIC, in pA and dA collisions at RHIC, and in AA collisions at CERN-SPS and RHIC. However, to the best of our knowledge, heavy quark production in eA has received almost no attention. With the possible construction of a high energy electron-ion collider, updated estimates of heavy quark production are needed. We address the subject from the perspective of saturation physics and compute the heavy quark production cross section with the dipole model. We isolate shadowing and nonlinear effects, showing their impact on the charm structure function and on the transverse momentum spectrum.

We report a comprehensive study of weak-localization and electron-electron interaction effects in a GaAs/InGaAs two-dimensional electron system with nearby InAs quantum dots, using measurements of the electrical conductivity with and without magnetic field. Although both the effects introduce temperature dependent corrections to the zero magnetic field conductivity at low temperatures, the magnetic field dependence of conductivity is dominated by the weak-localization correction. We observed that the electron dephasing scattering rate tau(-1)(phi), obtained from the magnetoconductivity data, is enhanced by introducing quantum dots in the structure, as expected, and obeys a linear dependence on the temperature and elastic mean free path, which is against the Fermi-liquid model. The semiclassical limit of quantum mechanical scattering in two dimensions is developed and the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin and eikonal results for two-dimensional scattering is derived. No backward or forward glory scattering is present in two dimensions. Other phenomena, such as rainbows and orbiting, do occur. (C) 2008 American Association of Physics Teachers.

Experimental studies of magnetoresistance in high-mobility wide quantum wells reveal oscillations which appear with an increase in temperature to 10 K and whose period is close to that of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The observed phenomenon is identified as magnetointersubband oscillations caused by the scattering of electrons between two occupied subbands and the third subband which becomes occupied as a result of thermal activation. These small-period oscillations are less sensitive to thermal suppression than the large-period magnetointersubband oscillations caused by the scattering between the first and the second subbands. Theoretical study, based on consideration of electron scattering near the edge of the third subband, gives a reasonable explanation of our experimental findings.

Here we use magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction to study the magnetic order in a 1.5 mu m EuTe film grown on (111) BaF(2) by molecular-beam epitaxy. At Eu L(II) and L(III) absorption edges, a resonant enhancement of more than two orders was observed for the sigma ->pi(') diffracted intensity at half-order reciprocal-lattice points, consistent with the magnetic character of the scattering. We studied the evolution of the (1/21/21/2) magnetic reflection with temperature. When heating toward the Neel temperature (T(N)), the integrated intensity decreased monotonously and showed no hysteresis upon cooling again, indicating a second-order phase transition. A power-law fit to the magnetization versus temperature curve yielded T(N)=9.99(1) K and a critical exponent beta=0.36(1), which agrees with the renormalization theory results for three-dimensional Heisenberg magnets. The fits to the sublattice magnetization dependence with temperature, disregarding and considering fourth-order exchange interactions, evidenced the importance of the latter for a correct description of magnetism in EuTe. A value of 0.009 was found for the (2j(1)+j(2))/J(2) ratio between the Heisenberg J(2) and fourth-order j(1,2) exchange constants. The magnetization curve exhibited a round-shaped region just near T(N) accompanied by an increase in the magnetic peak width, which was attributed to critical scattering above T(N). The comparison of the intensity ratio between the (1/21/21/2) and the (1/21/21/2) magnetic reflections proved that the Eu(2+) spins align within the (111) planes, and the azimuthal dependence of the (1/21/21/2) magnetic peak is consistent with the model of equally populated S domains.

The results on the measurement of electrical conductivity and magnetoconductivity of a GaAs double quantum well between 0.5 and 1.1 K are reported. The zero magnetic-field conductivity is well described from the point of view of contributions made by both the weak localization and electron-electron interaction. At low field and low temperature, the magnetoconductivity is dominated by the weak localization effect only. Using the weak localization method, we have determined the electron dephasing times tau(phi) and tunneling times tau(t). Concerning tunneling, we concluded that tau(t) presents a minimum around the balance point; concerning dephasing, we observed an anomalous dependence on temperature and conductivity (or elastic mean free path) of tau(phi). This anomalous behavior cannot be explained in terms of the prevailing concepts for the electron-electron interaction in high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems.

In this work we use resonant x-ray diffraction combined with polarization analysis of the diffracted beam to study the magnetic ordering in EuTe/PbTe multilayers. The presence of satellites at the (1/2 1/2 1/2) magnetic reflection of a 50 /repetition EuTe/PbTe superlattice demonstrated the existence of magnetic correlations among the alternated EuTe layers. The behavior of the satellites intensity as T increases toward the Neel temperature T(N) indicates that these correlations persist nearly up to T(N) and suggests the preferential decrease of the magnetic order parameter of external monolayers of each EuTe layer within the superlattice. Elastic scattering angular distributions for (7)Be, (9)Be, and (10)Be isotopes on (12)C target were measured at laboratory energies of 18.8, 26.0, and 23.2 MeV, respectively. The analysis was performed in terms of optical model potentials using Woods-Saxon and double-folding form factors. Also, continuum discretized coupled-channels calculations were performed for (7)Be and (9)Be + (12)C systems to infer the role of breakup in the elastic scattering. For the (10)Be + (12)C system, bound states coupled-channels calculations were considered. Moreover, total reaction cross sections were deduced from the elastic scattering analysis and compared with published data on other weakly and tightly bound projectiles elastically scattered on the (12)C target, as a function of energy.

We have analyzed a large set of alpha + alpha elastic scattering data for bombarding energies ranging from 0.6 to 29.5 MeV. Because of the complete lack of open reaction channels, the optical interaction at these energies must have a vanishing imaginary part. Thus, this system is particularly important because the corresponding elastic scattering cross sections are very sensitive to the real part of the interaction. The data were analyzed in the context of the velocity-dependent Sao Paulo potential, which is a successful theoretical model for the description of heavy-ion reactions from sub-barrier to intermediate energies. We have verified that, even in this low-energy region, the velocity dependence of the model is quite important for describing the data of the alpha + alpha system.

The quasi-elastic excitation function for the (17)O+(64)Zn system was measured at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier, at the backward angle theta(lab) = 161 degrees. The corresponding quasi-elastic barrier distribution was derived. The excitation function for the neutron stripping reactions was also measured, at the same angle and energies, and the experimental values of the spectroscopic factors were deduced by fitting the data. A reasonably good agreement was obtained between the experimental quasi-elastic barrier distribution with the coupled-channel calculations including a very large number of channels. Of the channels investigated, three dominated the coupling matrix: two inelastic channels, (64)Zn(2(1)(+)) and (17)O(1/(+)(2)), and one-neutron transfer channel, particularly the first one. On the other hand, a very good agreement is obtained when we use a nuclear diffuseness for the (17)O nucleus larger than the one for (16)O. We verify that quasi-elastic barrier distribution is a sensitive tool for determining nuclear matter diffuseness.

The elastic angular distributions have been analyzed with the optical model and three- and four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels calculations. The total reaction cross sections have been derived and compared with other systems of similar masses.

The elastic-scattering angular distribution for (8)Li on (12)C has been measured at E(LAB) = 23.9 MeV with (8)Li radioactive nuclear beam produced by the Radioactive Ion Beams in Brazil facility. This angular distribution was analyzed in terms of optical-model with Woods-Saxon and double-folding Sao Paulo potential. The roles of the breakup and inelastic channels were also investigated with cluster folding and deformed potentials, respectively, through coupled-channels calculations. The angular distribution for the proton-transfer (12)C((8)Li, (9)Be)(11)B reaction was also measured at the same energy. The spectroscopic factor for the <(9)Be|(8)Li + p > bound system was obtained and compared with shell-model calculations and with other experimental values. Total reaction cross sections for the present system were also extracted from the elastic-scattering analysis. A systematic of the reduced reaction cross sections obtained from the present and published data on (6,7,8)Li isotopes on (12)C was performed as a function of energy.

Fifteen strongly oscillating angular distributions of the elastic scattering of (12)C + (24)Mg at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E(c.m). = 10.67-16.00 MeV) are reproduced by adding five Breit-Wigner resonance terms to the l = 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 elastic S matrix. The nonresonant, background elastic scattering S matrix S(l)(0) is calculated using the Sao Paulo potential. The J = 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 (h) over bar molecular resonances fit well into a rotational molecular band, together with other higher lying resonances observed in the (16)O + (20)Ne elastic scattering. We propose that the presently observed, largely deformed molecular band corresponds to the hyperdeformed band, which has been found previously in alpha-cluster calculations, as well as in a new Nilsson model calculation. Systematic study of its possible clusterizations predicts the preference of the (12)C + (24)Mg and (16)O + (20)Ne molecular structure, in accordance with our present results.
